In this paper we give a short and elementary proof of a characterization of the projective space in terms of rational curves which was conjectured by Mori and Mukai. A proof was first given in a preprint by K. Cho, Y. Miyaoka and N. Shepherd-Barron. While our proof here is shorter and involves substantial technical simplifications, the essential ideas are taken from that preprint.

Picard numbers in a family of hyperkähler manifolds - A supplement to the article of R. Borcherds, L. Katzarkov, T. Pantev, N. I. Shepherd-Barron

Categorical aspects of the Kollár--Shepherd-Barron correspondence

It is well known that a $2$-dimensional cyclic quotient singularity $\overline{W}$ has the same singularity category as a finite dimensional associative algebra $\overline{R}$ introduced by Kalck and Karmazyn. We study the deformations of the algebra $\overline{R}$ induced by the deformations of the surface $\overline{W}$ to a smooth surface. Slope inequalities and a Miyaoka-Yau type inequality

For a minimal smooth projective surface $S$ of general type over a field of characteristic $p>0$, we prove that $K^2_S\le 32χ(\cal{O}_S).$ Moreover, if $18χ(\cal{O}_S)<K^2_S\le 32χ(\cal{O}_S)$, Albanese morphism of $S$ must induces a genus two fiberation. A classification of surfaces with $K^2_S=32χ(\cal{O}_S)$ is also given. The inequality also implies $χ(\cal{O}_S)>0$, which answers completely a question of Shepherd-Barron.

Mori contractions of maximal length

We prove a relative version of the theorem of Cho, Miyaoka and Shepherd-Barron: a Mori fibre space of maximal length is birational to a projective bundle.

Fibered stable varieties

We show that if a stable variety (in the sense of Kollár and Shepherd-Barron) admits a fibration with stable fibers and base, then this fibration structure deforms (uniquely) for all small deformations. During our proof we obtain also a Bogomolov-Sommese type vanishing for vector bundles and reflexive differential $n-1$-forms.

Characterizing Projective Spaces for Varieties with at Most Quotient Singularities

We generalize the well-known numerical criterion for projective spaces by Cho, Miyaoka and Shepherd-Barron to varieties with at worst quotient singularities. Let $X$ be a normal projective variety of dimension $n \geq 3$ with at most quotient singularities. Our result asserts that if $C \cdot (-K_X) \geq n+1$ for every curve $C \subset X$, then $X \cong \PP^n$.

Special birational transformations of projective spaces

Extending some results of Crauder and Katz, and Ein and Shepherd-Barron on special Cremona transformations, we study birational transformations of the complex projective spaces onto prime Fano manifolds such that the base locus X of the transformations is smooth, irreducible and reduced. We get a complete classification when X has dimension 1, or dimension 2, or codimension 2. We also get partial results when X has dimension 3.

Compact moduli spaces of surfaces of general type

We give an introduction to the compactification of the moduli space of surfaces of general type introduced by Kollár and Shepherd-Barron and generalized to the case of surfaces with a divisor by Alexeev. The construction is an application of Mori's minimal model program for 3-folds. We review the example of the projective plane with a curve of degree d > 3. We explain a connection between the geometry of the boundary of the compactification of the moduli space and the classification of vector bundles on the surface in the case H^{2,0}=H^1=0.

A boundary divisor in the moduli space of stable quintic surfaces

We give a bound on which singularities may appear on Kollár--Shepherd-Barron--Alexeev stable surfaces for a wide range of topological invariants and use this result to describe all stable numerical quintic surfaces (KSBA-stable surfaces with $K^2=χ=5$) whose unique non Du Val singularity is a Wahl singularity. Quadro-quadric special birational transformations of projective spaces

Special birational transformations $Φ:\p^r\da Z$ defined by quadric hypersurfaces are studied by means of the variety of lines $\mathcal L_z\subset\p^{r-1}$ passing through a general point $z\in Z$. Classification results are obtained when $Z$ is either a Grassmannian of lines, or the 10-dimensional spinor variety, or the $E_6$-variety.
