In this paper we analyze the structure of C*-algebras associated to ultragraphs, which are generalizations of directed graphs. We characterize the simple ultragraph algebras as well as deduce necessary and sufficient conditions for an ultragraph algebra to be purely infinite and to be AF. Using these techniques we also produce an example of an ultragraph algebra which is neither a graph algebra nor an Exel-Laca algebra. We conclude by proving that the C*-algebras of ultragraphs with no sinks are Cuntz-Pimsner algebras.
We realize Leavitt ultragraph path algebras as partial skew group rings. Using this realization we characterize artinian ultragraph path algebras and give simplicity criteria for these algebras.
We prove that the classes of graph algebras, Exel-Laca algebras, and ultragraph algebras coincide up to Morita equivalence. This result answers the long-standing open question of whether every Exel-Laca algebra is Morita equivalent to a graph algebra. Given an ultragraph G we construct a directed graph E such that C*(G) is isomorphic to a full corner of C*(E). As applications, we characterize real rank zero for ultragraph algebras and describe quotients of ultragraph algebras by gauge-invariant ideals.
We give a notion of branching systems on ultragraphs. From this we build concrete representations of ultragraph C*-algebras on the bounded linear operators of Hilbert spaces. To each branching system of an ultragraph we describe the associated Perron-Frobenius operator in terms of the induced representation. We show that every permutative representation of an ultragraph C*-algebra is unitary equivalent to a representation arising from a branching system. We give a sufficient condition on ultragraphs such that a large class of representations of the C*-algebras of these ultragraphs is permutati…
Given an ultragraph in the sense of Tomforde, we construct a topological quiver in the sense of Muhly and Tomforde in such a way that the universal C*-algebras associated to the two objects coincide. We apply results of Muhly and Tomforde for topological quiver algebras and of Katsura for topological graph C*-algebras to study the K-theory and gauge-invariant ideal structure of ultragraph C*-algebras.
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be an ultragraph and let $C^*(\mathcal{G})$ be the associated $C^*$-algebra introduced by Mark Tomforde. For any gauge invariant ideal $I_{(H,B)}$ of $C^*(\mathcal{G})$, we analyze the structure of the quotient $C^*$-algebra $C^*(\mathcal{G})/I_{(H,B)}$. For simplicity's sake, we first introduce the notion of quotient ultragraph $\mathcal{G}/(H,B)$ and an associated $C^*$-algebra $C^*(\mathcal{G}/(H,B))$ such that $C^*(\mathcal{G}/(H,B))\cong C^*(\mathcal{G})/I_{(H,B)}$. We then prove the gauge invariant and the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorems for $C^*(\mathcal{G}/(H,B))$ a…
We give various necessary and sufficient conditions for an AF-algebra to be isomorphic to a graph C*-algebra, an Exel-Laca algebra, and an ultragraph C*-algebra. We also explore consequences of these results. In particular, we show that all stable AF-algebras are both graph C*-algebras and Exel-Laca algebras, and that all simple AF-algebras are either graph C*-algebras or Exel-Laca algebras. In addition, we obtain a characterization of AF-algebras that are isomorphic to the C*-algebra of a row-finite graph with no sinks.
We define an ultragraph, which is a generalization of a directed graph, and describe how to associate a C*-algebra to it. We show that the class of ultragraph algebras contains the C*-algebras of graphs as well as the Exel-Laca algebras. We also show that many of the techniques used for graph algebras can be applied to ultragraph algebras and that the ultragraph provides a useful tool for analyzing Exel-Laca algebras. Our results include versions of the Cuntz-Krieger Uniqueness Theorem and the Gauge-Invariant Uniqueness Theorem for ultragraph algebras.
In this article, we realize ultragraph Leavitt path algebras as Steinberg algebras. This realization allows us to use the groupoid approach to obtain structural results about these algebras. Using skew product groupoid, we show that ultragraph Leavitt path algebras are graded von Neumann regular rings. We characterize strongly graded ultragraph Leavitt path algebras and show that every ultragraph Leavitt path algebra is semiprimitive. Moreover, we characterize irreducible representations of ultragraph Leavitt path algebras. We also show that ultragraph Leavitt path algebras can be realized as …
We introduce the Leavitt path algebras of ultragraphs and we characterize their ideal structures. We then use this notion to introduce and study the algebraic analogous of Exel-Laca algebras.
In this article, we provide an explicit description of a set of generators for any ideal of an ultragraph Leavitt path algebra. We provide several additional consequences of this description, including information about generating sets for graded ideals, the graded uniqueness and Cuntz-Krieger theorems, the semiprimeness, and the semiprimitivity of ultragraph Leavitt path algebras, a complete characterization of the prime and primitive ideals of an ultragraph Leavitt path algebra. We also show that every primitive ideal of an ultragraph Leavitt path algebra is exactly the annihilator of a Chen…
We describe KMS and ground states arising from a generalized gauge action on ultragraph C*-algebras. We focus on ultragraphs that satisfy Condition~(RFUM), so that we can use the partial crossed product description of ultragraph C*-algebras recently described by the second author and Danilo Royer. In particular, for ultragraphs with no sinks, we generalize a recent result by Toke Carlsen and Nadia Larsen: Given a time evolution on the C*-algebra of an ultragraph, induced by a function on the edge set, we characterize the KMS states in five different ways and ground states in four different way…
We completely characterize perfect, permutative, irreducible representations of an ultragraph Leavitt path algebra. For this we extend to ultragraph Leavitt path algebras Chen's construction of irreducible representations of Leavitt path algebras. We show that these representations can be built from branching system and characterize irreducible representations associated to perfect branching systems. Along the way we improve the characterization of faithfulness of Chen's irreducible representations.
An ultragraph gives rise to a labelled graph with some particular properties. In this paper we describe the algebras associated to such labelled graphs as groupoid algebras. More precisely, we show that the known groupoid algebra realization of ultragraph C*-algebras is only valid for ultragraphs for which the range of each edge is finite, and we extend this realization to any ultragraph (including ultragraphs with sinks). Using our machinery, we characterize the shift space associated to an ultragraph as the tight spectrum of the inverse semigroup associated to the ultragraph (viewed as a lab…
There are two established gradings on Leavitt path algebras associated with ultragraphs, namely the grading by the integers group and the grading by the free group on the edges. In this paper, we characterize properties of these gradings in terms of the underlying combinatorial properties of the ultragraphs. More precisely, we characterize when the gradings are strong or epsilon-strong. The results regarding the free group on the edges are new also in the context of Leavitt path algebras of graphs. Finally, we also describe the relation between the strongness of the integer grading on an ultra…
We define a notion of (one-sided) edge shift spaces associated to ultragraphs. In the finite case our notion coincides with the edge shift space of a graph. In general, we show that our space is metrizable and has a countable basis of clopen sets. We show that for a large class of ultragraphs the basis elements of the topology are compact. We examine shift morphisms between these shift spaces, and, for the locally compact case, show that if two (possibly infinite) ultragraphs have edge shifts that are conjugate, via a conjugacy that preserves length, then the associated ultragraph C*-algebras …
Higher rank semigraph algebras are introduced by mixing concepts of ultragraph algebras and higher rank graph algebras. This yields a kind of higher rank generalisation of ultragraph algebras. We prove Cuntz--Krieger uniqueness theorems for cancelling semigraph algebras and aperiodic full semigraph algebras.
Let $\mathcal G$ be an ultragraph and let $K$ be a field. We describe prime and primitive ideals in the ultragraph Leavitt path algebra $L_K(\mathcal G)$. We identify the graded prime ideals in terms of downward directed sets and then we characterize the non-graded prime ideals. We show that the non-graded prime ideals of $L_K(\mathcal G)$ are always primitive.
In this paper we study representations of ultragraph Leavitt path algebras via branching systems and, using partial skew ring theory, prove the reduction theorem for these algebras. We apply the reduction theorem to show that ultragraph Leavitt path algebras are semiprime and to completely describe faithfulness of the representations arising from branching systems, in terms of the dynamics of the branching systems. Furthermore, we study permutative representations and provide a sufficient criteria for a permutative representation of an ultragraph Leavitt path algebra to be equivalent to a repr…
Inspired by the work of Paterson on $C^{\ast}$-algebras of directed graphs, we show how to associate a groupoid $\mathfrak{G}_{\mathcal{G}}$ to an ultragraph $\mathcal{G}$ in such a way that the $C^*$-algebra of $\mathfrak{G}_{\mathcal{G}}$ is canonically isomorphic to Tomforde's $C^*$-algebra $C^*(\mathcal{G})$. The groupoid $\mathfrak{G}_{\mathcal{G}}$ is built from an inverse semigroup $S_{\mathcal{G}}$ naturally associated to $\mathcal{G}$.
Let $\mathcal{G}$ be an ultragraph and let $C^*(\mathcal{G})$ be the associated $C^*$-algebra introduced by Mark Tomforde. For any gauge invariant ideal $I_{(H,B)}$ of $C^*(\mathcal{G})$, we approach the quotient $C^*$-algebra $C^*(\mathcal{G})/I_{(H,B)}$ by the $C^*$-algebra of finite graphs and prove versions of gauge invariant and Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorems for it. We then describe primitive gauge invariant ideals and determine purely infinite ultragraph $C^*$-algebras (in the sense of Kirchberg-R$ø$rdam) via Fell bundles.
Given a partial action $α$ of a groupoid $G$ on a ring $R$, we study the associated partial skew groupoid ring $R \rtimes_α G$, which carries a natural $G$-grading. We show that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the $G$-invariant ideals of $R$ and the graded ideals of the $G$-graded ring $R \rtimes_αG.$ We provide sufficient conditions for primeness, and necessary and sufficient conditions for simplicity of $R \rtimes_αG.$ We show that every ideal of $R \rtimes_αG$ is graded if, and only if, $α$ has the residual intersection property. Furthermore, if $α$ is induced by a topological …
We describe a class of $C^*$-algebras which simultaneously generalise the ultragraph algebras of Tomforde and the shift space $C^*$-algebras of Matsumoto. In doing so we shed some new light on the different $C^*$-algebras that may be associated to a shift space. Finally, we show how to associate a simple $C^*$-algebra to an irreducible sofic shift.
A Leavitt labelled path algebra over a commutative unital ring is associated with a labelled space, generalizing Leavitt path algebras associated with graphs and ultragraphs as well as torsion-free commutative algebras generated by idempotents. We show that Leavitt labelled path algebras can be realized as partial skew group rings, Steinberg algebras, and Cuntz-Pimsner algebras. Via these realizations we obtain generalized uniqueness theorems, a description of diagonal preserving isomorphisms and we characterize simplicity of Leavitt labelled path algebras. In addition, we prove that a large c…
A partial action is associated with a normal weakly left resolving labelled space such that the crossed product and labelled space $C^*$-algebras are isomorphic. An improved characterization of simplicity for labelled space $C^*$-algebras is given and applied to $C^*$-algebras of subshifts.
We develop a framework suitable for obtaining simplicity criteria for reduced $C^*$-algebras of Hausdorff etale groupoids. This is based on the study of certain non-degenerate $C^*$-subalgebras (in the case of groupoids, the $C^*$-algebra of the interior isotropy bundle), for which one can control (non-unique) state extensions to the ambient C*-algebra. As an application, we give simplicity criteria for reduced crossed products of abelian $C^*$-algebras by discrete groups.
In this paper, we consider the simplicity of the C*-algebra associated to an arbitrary weakly left-resolving labeled space (E, L, E), where E is the smallest non-degenerate accommodating set. We classify all gauge-invariant ideals of C*(E, L, E) and characterize minimality of (E, L, E) in terms of ideal structure of C*(E, L, E). Using these results, we prove simplicity results for C*-algebras associated to arbitrary labeled spaces.
We prove a uniqueness theorem and give a characterization of simplicity for Steinberg algebras associated to non-Hausdorff ample groupoids. We also prove a uniqueness theorem and give a characterization of simplicity for the C*-algebra associated to non-Hausdorff étale groupoids. Then we show how our results apply in the setting of tight representations of inverse semigroups, groups acting on graphs, and self-similar actions. In particular, we show that C*-algebra and the complex Steinberg algebra of the self-similar action of the Grigorchuk group are simple but the Steinberg algebra with coef…
It is shown that no local periodicity is equivalent to the aperiodicity condition for arbitrary finitely-aligned k-graphs. This allows us to conclude that C*(Λ) is simple if and only if Λis cofinal and has no local periodicity.
We have introduced a notion of $C^*$-symbolic dynamical system in [K. Matsumoto: Actions of symbolic dynamical systems on $C^*$-algebras, to appear in J. Reine Angew. Math.], that is a finite family of endomorphisms of a $C^*$-algebra with some conditions. The endomorphisms are indexed by symbols and yield both a subshift and a $C^*$-algebra of a Hilbert $C^*$-bimodule. The associated $C^*$-algebra with the $C^*$-symbolic dynamical system is regarded as a crossed product by the subshift. We will study a simplicity condition of the $C^*$-algebras of the $C^*$-symbolic dynamical systems. Some ex…
Graph products of groups were introduced by Green in her thesis. They have an operator algebraic counterpart introduced and explored by Fima and the first-named author. In this paper we prove Khintchine type inequalities for general C$^{\ast}$-algebraic graph products which generalize results by Ricard and Xu on free products of C$^{\ast}$-algebras. We apply these inequalities in the context of (right-angled) Hecke C$^{\ast}$-algebras, which are deformations of the group algebra of Coxeter groups. For these we deduce a Haagerup inequality. We further use this to study the simplicity and trace …
We prove simplicity of all intermediate $C^*$-algebras $C^*_{r}(Γ)\subseteq \mathcal{B} \subseteq Γ\ltimes_r C(X)$ in the case of minimal actions of $C^*$-simple groups $Γ$ on compact spaces $X$. For this, we use the notion of stationary states, recently introduced by Hartman and Kalantar (arXiv:1712.10133v2). We show that the Powers' averaging property holds for the reduced crossed product $Γ\ltimes_r \mathcal{A}$ for any action $Γ\curvearrowright \mathcal{A}$ of a $C^*$-simple group $Γ$ on a unital $C^*$-algebra $\mathcal{A}$, and use it to prove a one-to-one correspondence between stationar…
Topological quivers generalize the notion of directed graphs in which the sets of vertices and edges are locally compact (second countable) Hausdorff spaces. Associated to a topological quiver $Q$ is a $C^*$-correspondence, and in turn, a Cuntz-Pimsner algebra $C^*(Q).$ Given $Γ$ a locally compact group and $α$ and $β$ endomorphisms on $Γ,$ one may construct a topological quiver $Q_{α,β}(Γ)$ with vertex set $Γ,$ and edge set $Ω_{α,β}(Γ)= \{(x,y)\inΓ\timesΓ\| α(y)=β(x)\}.$ In \cite{Mc1}, the author examined the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra $\cal{O}_{α,β}(Γ):=C^*(Q_{α,β}(Γ))$ and found generators (and …
We characterise simplicity of twisted C*-algebras of row-finite k-graphs with no sources. We show that each 2-cocycle on a cofinal k-graph determines a canonical second-cohomology class for the periodicity group of the graph. The groupoid of the k-graph then acts on the cartesian product of the infinite-path space of the graph with the dual group of the centre of any bicharacter representing this second-cohomology class. The twisted k-graph algebra is simple if and only if this action is minimal. We apply this result to characterise simplicity for many twisted crossed products of k-graph algeb…
We characterize when the reduced C*-algebra of a group has unique tracial state, respectively, is simple, in terms of Dixmier-type properties of the group C*-algebra. We also give a simple proof of the recent result by Breuillard, Kalantar, Kennedy and Ozawa that the reduced C*-algebra of a group has unique tracial state if and only if the amenable radical of the group is trivial.
Pimsner introduced the C*-algebra O_X generated by a Hilbert bimodule X over a C*-algebra A. We look for additional conditions that X should satisfy in order to study simplicity and, more generally, the ideal structure of O_X when X is finite projective. We introduce two conditions: `(I)-freeness' and `(II)-freeness', stronger than the former, in analogy with [J. Cuntz, W. Krieger, Invent. Math. 56, 251-268] and [J. Cuntz, Invent. Math. 63, 25-40] respectively. (I)-freeness comprehend the case of the bimodules associated with an inclusion of simple C*-algebras with finite index, real or pseudo…
We prove that if Λis a row-finite k-graph with no sources, then the associated C^*-algebra is simple if and only if Λis cofinal and satisfies Kumjian and Pask's Condition (A). We prove that Condition (A) is equivalent to a suitably modified version of Robertson and Steger's original nonperiodicity condition (H3) which in particular involves only finite paths. We also characterise both cofinality and aperiodicity of Λin terms of ideals in C^*(Λ).
We show that the commutator subgroup of the group of unitaries connected to the identity in a simple unital C*-algebra is simple modulo its center. We then go on to investigate the role of regularity properties in the structure of the special unitary group of a C*-algebra. Under mild assumptions, we show that this group has the invariant automatic continuity property and a unique polish group topology. Strengthening our assumptions in the case of simple C*-algebras, we show that the special unitary group modulo its center has bounded normal generation. These results apply to all simple purely …
This paper studies injective envelopes of groupoid dynamical systems and the corresponding boundaries. Analogue to the group case, we associate a bundle of compact Hausdorff spaces to any (discrete) groupoid (the Hamana boundary of the groupoid). We study bundles of compact topological spaces equipped with an action of a groupoid. We show that any groupoid has a minimal boundary (the Furstenberg boundary of the groupoid). We prove that the Hamana and Furstenberg boundaries are the same, for (discrete) groupoids. We find the relation between the reduced crossed product of the $\G$-injective env…
We study simplicity and pure infiniteness criteria for C*-algebras associated to inverse semigroup actions by Hilbert bimodules and to Fell bundles over etale not necessarily Hausdorff groupoids. Inspired by recent work of Exel and Pitts, we introduce essential crossed products for which there are such criteria. In our approach the major role is played by a generalised expectation with values in the local multiplier algebra. We give a long list of equivalent conditions characterising when the essential and reduced C*-algebras coincide. Our most general simplicity and pure infiniteness criteria…
In previous work, the authors showed that the C*-algebra C*(Λ) of a row-finite higher-rank graph Λwith no sources is simple if and only if Λis both cofinal and aperiodic. In this paper, we generalise this result to row-finite higher-rank graphs which are locally convex (but may contain sources). Our main tool is Farthing's "removing sources" construction which embeds a row-finite locally convex higher-rank graph in a row-finite higher-rank graph with no sources in such a way that the associated C*-algebras are Morita equivalent.
We characterize the simplicity of universal C$^*$-algebras arising from multispinal groups. Let $\mathcal{O}_{G_{\max}}$ be the universal C$^*$-algebra associated to a multispinal group $G$. We show that the invertibility of a matrix completely determines the simplicity of $\mathcal{O}_{G_{\max}}$.
A discrete group $Γ$ is C*-simple if the C*-algebra $C_λ^*(Γ)$ generated by the range of the left regular representation $λ$ on $\ell^2(Γ)$ is simple. In this case, $Γ$ acts faithfully on the Furstenberg boundary $\partial_FΓ$ and there is a unique trace on $C_λ^*(Γ)$. In this paper we study the unique trace property for the C*-algebra $C_π^*(Γ)$ generated by the range of an arbitrary unitary representation $π: Γ\to B(H_π) $ and relate it to the faithfulness of the action of $Γ$ on the Furstenberg-Hamana boundary $\mathcal B_π$. Similar relation is obtained between simplicity of $C_π^*(Γ)$ and…
We prove simplicity and pure infiniteness results for a certain class of labelled graph $C^*$-algebras. We show, by example, that this class of unital labelled graph $C^*$-algebras is strictly larger than the class of unital graph $C^*$-algebras.
A necessary and sufficient condition for the simplicity of the C*-algebra reduced free product of finite dimensional abelian algebras is found, and it is proved that the stable rank of every such free product is 1. Related results about other reduced free products of C*-algebras are proved.
In this paper we give a formula for the $K$-theory of the $C^*$-algebra of a weakly left-resolving labelled space. This is done by realising the $C^*$-algebra of a weakly left-resolving labelled space as the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra of a $C^*$-correspondence. As a corollary we get a gauge invariant uniqueness theorem for the $C^*$-algebra of any weakly left-resolving labelled space. In order to achieve this we must modify the definition of the $C^*$-algebra of a weakly left-resolving labelled space. We also establish strong connections between the various classes of $C^*$-algebras which are assoc…
We find a necessary and sufficient conditions for the simplicity and uniqueness of trace for reduced free products of finite families of finite dimensional $C^*$-algebras with specified traces on them.
A countable group is C*-simple if its reduced C*-algebra is a simple algebra. Since Powers recognised in 1975 that non-abelian free groups are C*-simple, large classes of groups which appear naturally in geometry have been identified, including non-elementary Gromov hyperbolic groups and lattices in semisimple groups. In this exposition, C*-simplicity for countable groups is shown to be an extreme case of non-amenability. The basic examples are described and several open problems are formulated.
We consider conditions on a $k$-graph $Λ$, a semigroup $S$ and a functor $η: Λ\to S$ which ensure that the $C^*$-algebra of the skew-product graph $Λ\times_ηS$ is simple. Our results allow give some necessary and sufficient conditions for the AF-core of a $k$-graph $C^{*}$-algebra to be simple.
