We discuss ways that the ring of coefficients for a TQFT can be reduced if one restricts somewhat the allowed cobordisms. When we apply these methods to a TQFT associated to SO(3) at an odd prime p, we obtain a functor from a somewhat restricted cobordism category to the category of free finitely generated modules over a ring of cyclotomic integers :Z [zeta_{2p}], if p \equiv -1 mod{4}, and Z [zeta_{4p}], if p \equiv 1 \pmod{4}, where zeta_k is a primitive kth root of unity. We study the quantum invariants of prime power order simple cyclic covers of 3-manifolds. We define new invariants arising from strong shift equivalence and integrality. Similar results are obtained for some other TQFTs but the modules are only guaranteed to be projective.
We study the maps induced on link Floer homology by elementary decorated link cobordisms. We compute these for births, deaths, stabilizations, and destabilizations, and show that saddle cobordisms can be computed in terms of maps in a decorated skein exact triangle that extends the oriented skein exact triangle in knot Floer homology. In particular, we completely determine the Alexander and Maslov grading shifts. As a corollary, we compute the maps induced by elementary cobordisms between unlinks. We show that these give rise to a $(1+1)$-dimensional TQFT that coincides with the reduced Khovan…
A TQFT is a functor from a cobordism category to the category of vector spaces, satisfying certain properties. An important property is that the vector spaces should be finite dimensional. For the WRT TQFT, the relevant 2+1-cobordism category is built from manifolds which are equipped with an extra structure such as a p_1-structure, or an extended manifold structure. We perform the universal construction of Blanchet, Habegger, Masbaum and Vogel on a cobordism category without this extra structure and show that the resulting quantization functor assigns an infinite dimensional vector space to t…
We consider a generalization of the axioms of a TQFT, so called half-projective TQFT's, with an anomaly, $x^μ$, in the composition law. $μ$ is a coboundary on the cobordism categories with non-negative, integer values. The element $x$ of the ring over which the TQFT is defined does not have to be invertible. In particular, it may be 0. This modification makes it possible to extend quantum-invariants, which vanish on $S^1\times S^2$, to non-trivial TQFT's. (A TQFT in the sense of Atiyah with this property has to be trivial all together). Under a few natural assumptions the notion of a half-proj…
We combinatorially describe the $2$-category of singular cobordisms, called (rank one) foams, which governs the functorial version of Khovanov homology. As an application we topologically realize the type $\mathrm{D}$ arc algebra using this singular cobordism construction.
We consider a cobordism category whose morphisms are punctured connect sums of $S^1 \times S^2$'s (wormhole spaces) with embedded admissibly colored banded trivalent graphs. We define a TQFT on this cobordism category over the field of rational functions in an indeterminant $A.$ For $r$ large, we recover, by specializing $A$ to a primitive 4rth root of unity, the Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev TQFT restricted to links in wormhole spaces. Thus, for $r$ large, the $r$th Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariant of a link in some wormhole space, properly normalized, is the value of a certain rational functi…
We construct a certain `cobordism category' ${\cal D}$ whose morphisms are suitably decorated cobordism classes between similarly decorated closed oriented 1-manifolds, and show that there is essentially a bijection between (1+1-dimensional) unitary topological quantum field theories (TQFTs) defined on ${\cal D}$, on the one hand, and Jones' subfactor planar algebras, on the other.
We construct and study a new family of TQFTs based on nilpotent highest weight representations of quantum sl(2) at a root of unity indexed by generic complex numbers. This extends to cobordisms the non-semi-simple invariants defined in (arXiv:1202.3553) including the Kashaev invariant of links. Here the modular category framework does not apply and we use the ``universal construction''. Our TQFT provides a monoidal functor from a category of surfaces and their cobordisms into the category of graded finite dimensional vector spaces and their degree 0-morphisms and depends on the choice of a roo…
We give a presentation of the $n$-dimensional oriented cobordism category $\text{Cob}_n$ with generators corresponding to diffeomorphisms and surgeries along framed spheres, and a complete set of relations. Hence, given a functor $F$ from the category of smooth oriented manifolds and diffeomorphisms to an arbitrary category $C$, and morphisms induced by surgeries along framed spheres, we obtain a necessary and sufficient set of relations these have to satisfy to extend to a functor from $\text{Cob}_n$ to $C$. If $C$ is symmetric and monoidal, then we also characterize when the extension is a T…
We study a special sort of 2-dimensional extended Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFTs) which we call open-closed TQFTs. These are defined on open-closed cobordisms by which we mean smooth compact oriented 2-manifolds with corners that have a particular global structure in order to model the smooth topology of open and closed string worldsheets. We show that the category of open-closed TQFTs is equivalent to the category of knowledgeable Frobenius algebras. A knowledgeable Frobenius algebra (A,C,i,i^*) consists of a symmetric Frobenius algebra A, a commutative Frobenius algebra C, and an …
We present a state sum construction of two-dimensional extended Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFTs), so-called open-closed TQFTs, which generalizes the state sum of Fukuma--Hosono--Kawai from triangulations of conventional two-dimensional cobordisms to those of open-closed cobordisms, i.e. smooth compact oriented 2-manifolds with corners that have a particular global structure. This construction reveals the topological interpretation of the associative algebra on which the state sum is based, as the vector space that the TQFT assigns to the unit interval. Extending the notion of a two-d…
This paper is devoted to the study of algebraic structures leading to link homology theories. The originally used structures of Frobenius algebra and/or TQFT are modified in two directions. First, we refine 2-dimensional cobordisms by taking into account their embedding into the three space. Secondly, we extend the underlying cobordism category to a 2-category, where the usual relations hold up to 2-isomorphisms. The corresponding abelian 2-functor is called an extended quantum field theory (EQFT). We show that the Khovanov homology, the nested Khovanov homology, extracted by Stroppel and Webs…
The notion of 2-framed three-manifolds is defined. The category of 2-framed cobordisms is described, and used to define a 2-framed three-dimensional TQFT. Using skeletonization and special features of this category, a small set of data and relations is given that suffice to construct a 2-framed three-dimensional TQFT. These data and relations are expressed in the language of surgery.
The goal of this work is to describe a categorical formalism for (Extended) Topological Quantum Field Theories (TQFTs) and present them as functors from a suitable category of cobordisms with corners to a linear category, generalizing 2d open-closed TQFTs to higher dimensions. The approach is based on the notion of an n-fold category by C. Ehresmann, weakened in the spirit of monoidal categories (associators, interchangers, Mac Lane's pentagons and hexagons), in contrast with the simplicial (weak Kan and complete Segal) approach of Jacob Lurie. We show how different Topological Quantum Field T…
We present a general framework for TQFT and related constructions using the language of monoidal categories. We construct a topological category C and an algebraic category D, both monoidal, and a TQFT functor is then defined as a certain type of monoidal functor from C to D. In contrast with the cobordism approach, this formulation of TQFT is closer in spirit to the classical functors of algebraic topology, like homology. The fundamental operation of gluing is incorporated at the level of the morphisms in the topological category through the notion of a gluing morphism, which we define. It al…

Let $(V,Z)$ be a Topological Quantum Field Theory over a field $f$ defined on a cobordism category whose morphisms are oriented $n+1$-manifolds perhaps with extra structure. Let $(M,χ)$ be a closed oriented $n+1$-manifold $M$ with this extra structure together with $χ\in H^1(M).$ Let $M_{\infty}$ denote the infinite cyclic cover of $M$ given by $χ.$ Consider a fundamental domain $E$ for the action of the integers on $M_{\infty}$ bounded by lifts of a surface $Σ$ dual to $χ,$ and in general position. $E$ can be viewed as a cobordism from $Σ$ to itself. We give Turaev and Viro's proof of their t…
(Talk presented at the XVth Workshop on Geometric Methods in Physics, Quantizations, Deformations and Coherent States, in Bialowieza, Poland, July 1-7, 1996.) The aim of this article is to introduce some basic notions of Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT) and to consider a modification of TQFT, applicable to embedded manifolds. After an introduction based around a simple example (Section 1) the notion of a d-dimensional TQFT is defined in category-theoretical terms, as a certain type of functor from a category of d-dimensional cobordisms to the category of vector spaces (Section 2). A con…
We define Homotopy quantum field theories (HQFT) as Topological quantum field theories (TQFT) for manifolds endowed with extra structure in the form of a map into some background space X. We also build the category of homotopy cobordisms HCobord(n,X) such that an HQFT is a functor from this category into a category of linear spaces. We then derive some very general properties of HCobord}(n,X), including the fact that it only depends on the (n+1)-homotopy type of X. We also prove that an HQFT with target space X and in dimension n+1 implies the existence of geometrical structures in X; in parti…
This thesis studies the Bar-Natan skein module of the solid torus with a particular boundary curve system, and in particular a diagrammatic presentation of it due to Russell. This module has deep connections to topology and categorification: it is isomorphic to both the total homology of the (n,n)-Springer variety and the 0th Hochschild homology of the Khovanov arc ring H^n. We can also view the Bar-Natan--Russell skein module from a representation-theoretic viewpoint as an extension of the Frenkel--Khovanov graphical description of the Lusztig dual canonical basis of the nth tensor power of t…
