In the literature, two approaches to the Weierstrass representation formula using spinors are known, one explicit, going back to Kusner & Schmitt, and generalized by Konopelchenko and Taimanov, and one abstract due to Friedrich, Bayard, Lawn and Roth. In this article, we show that both points of view are indeed equivalent, for surfaces in R^3, Nil_3 and R^4. The correspondence between the equations of both approaches is explicitly given and as a consequence we derive alternate (and simpler) proofs of these previous theorems.

We give a survey on the Weierstrass representations of surfaces in three- and four-dimensional spaces, their applications to the theory of the Willmore functional and on related problems of spectral theory of the two-dimensional Dirac operator with periodic coefficients.
We derive the Weierstrass (or spinor) representation for surfaces in three-dimensional Lie groups Nil, \tilde{SL}_2, and Sol with Thurston's geometries and establish the generating equations for minimal surfaces in these groups. Using Schauder's theory for linear elliptic partial differential equations in two independent variables and fundamental estimates for univalent mappings due to E. Heinz we establish an upper bound of the Gaussian curvature of two-dimensional minimal surface graphs in R^n. This leads us to a theorem of Bernstein-Liouville type.
We study analytic descriptions of conformal immersions of the Riemann sphere S^2 into the CP^(N-1) sigma model. In particular, an explicit expression for two-dimensional (2-D) surfaces, obtained from the generalized Weierstrass formula, is given. It is also demonstrated that these surfaces coincide with the ones obtained from the Sym-Tafel formula. These two approaches correspond to parametrizations of one and the same surface in R^(N^2-1).
