Self-scaled barrier functions on self-scaled cones were introduced through a set of axioms in 1994 by Y.E. Nesterov and M.J. Todd as a tool for the construction of long-step interior point algorithms. This paper provides firm foundation for these objects by exhibiting their symmetry properties, their intimate ties with the symmetry groups of their domains of definition, and subsequently their decomposition into irreducible parts and algebraic classification theory. In a first part we recall the characterisation of the family of self-scaled cones as the set of symmetric cones and develop a primal-dual symmetric viewpoint on self-scaled barriers, results that were first discovered by the second author. We then show in a short, simple proof that any pointed, convex cone decomposes into a direct sum of irreducible components in a unique way, a result which can also be of independent interest. We then show that any self-scaled barrier function decomposes in an essentially unique way into a direct sum of self-scaled barriers defined on the irreducible components of the underlying symmetric cone. Finally, we present a complete algebraic classification of self-scaled barrier functions using the correspondence between symmetric cones and Euclidean Jordan algebras.
Motivated by the expressive power of completely positive programming to encode hard optimization problems, many approximation schemes for the completely positive cone have been proposed and successfully used. Most schemes are based on outer approximations, with the only inner approximations available being linear programming based methods proposed by Bundfuss and Dür and also Yıldırım, and a semidefinite programming based method proposed by Lasserre. In this paper, we propose the use of the cone of nonnegative scaled diagonally dominant matrices as a natural inner approximation to the complete…
The recent interior point algorithm by Dahl and Andersen [10] for nonsymmetric cones as well as earlier works [16,19] require derivative information from the conjugate of the barrier function of the cones in the problem. Besides a few special cases, there is no indication of when this information is efficient to evaluate. We show how to compute the gradient of the conjugate barrier function for seven useful nonsymmetric cones. In some cases this is helpful for deriving closed-form expressions for the inverse Hessian operator for the primal barrier.
A closed convex subset of a normed linear space is said to have the strong separation property if it can be strongly separated from every other disjoint closed and convex set by a closed hyperplane. In this paper we give some results on the separation of convex sets with noticing the role of barrier cones, develop some characterizations of subsets having the strong separation property, and apply them to consider a class of convex optimization problems.
We present alfonso, an open-source Matlab package for solving conic optimization problems over nonsymmetric convex cones. The implementation is based on the authors' corrected analysis of a primal-dual interior-point method of Skajaa and Ye. This method enables optimization over any convex cone as long as a logarithmically homogeneous self-concordant barrier is available for the cone or its dual. This includes many nonsymmetric cones, for example, hyperbolicity cones and their duals (such as sum-of-squares cones), semidefinite and second-order cone representable cones, power cones, and the exp…
Spectral functions on Euclidean Jordan algebras arise frequently in convex models. Despite the success of primal-dual conic interior point solvers, there has been little work on enabling direct support for spectral cones, i.e. proper nonsymmetric cones defined from epigraphs and perspectives of spectral functions. We propose simple logarithmically homogeneous barriers for spectral cones and we derive efficient, numerically stable procedures for evaluating barrier oracles such as inverse Hessian operators. For two useful classes of spectral cones - the root-determinant cones and the matrix mono…
Many control applications require that a system be constrained to a particular set of states, often termed as safe set. A practical and flexible method for rendering safe sets forward-invariant involves computing control input using Control Barrier Functions and Quadratic Programming methods. Many prior results however require the resulting control input to be continuous, which requires strong assumptions or can be difficult to demonstrate theoretically. In this paper we use differential inclusion methods to show that simultaneously rendering multiple sets invariant can be accomplished using a…
The nonnegative rank of a matrix A is the smallest integer r such that A can be written as the sum of r rank-one nonnegative matrices. The nonnegative rank has received a lot of attention recently due to its application in optimization, probability and communication complexity. In this paper we study a class of atomic rank functions defined on a convex cone which generalize several notions of "positive" ranks such as nonnegative rank or cp-rank (for completely positive matrices). The main contribution of the paper is a new method to obtain lower bounds for such ranks which improve on previousl…
We develop techniques to construct a series of sparse polyhedral approximations of the semidefinite cone. Motivated by the semidefinite (SD) bases proposed by Tanaka and Yoshise (2018), we propose a simple expansion of SD bases so as to keep the sparsity of the matrices composing it. We prove that the polyhedral approximation using our expanded SD bases contains the set of all diagonally dominant matrices and is contained in the set of all scaled diagonally dominant matrices. We also prove that the set of all scaled diagonally dominant matrices can be expressed using an infinite number of expa…
We propose and analyse primal-dual interior-point algorithms for convex optimization problems in conic form. The families of algorithms we analyse are so-called short-step algorithms and they match the current best iteration complexity bounds for primal-dual symmetric interior-point algorithm of Nesterov and Todd, for symmetric cone programming problems with given self-scaled barriers. Our results apply to any self-concordant barrier for any convex cone. We also prove that certain specializations of our algorithms to hyperbolic cone programming problems (which lie strictly between symmetric co…
We study preconditioned proximal point methods for a class of saddle point problems, where the preconditioner decouples the overall proximal point method into an alternating primal--dual method. This is akin to the Chambolle--Pock method or the ADMM. In our work, we replace the squared distance in the dual step by a barrier function on a symmetric cone, while using a standard (Euclidean) proximal step for the primal variable. We show that under non-degeneracy and simple linear constraints, such a hybrid primal--dual algorithm can achieve linear convergence on originally strongly convex problem…
We use the concept of barrier-based smoothing approximations introduced in [ C. B. Chua and Z. Li, A barrier-based smoothing proximal point algorithm for NCPs over closed convex cones, SIOPT 23(2), 2010] to extend the non-interior continuation method proposed in [B. Chen and N. Xiu, A global linear and local quadratic noninterior continuation method for nonlinear complementarity problems based on Chen-Mangasarian smoothing functions, SIOPT 9(3), 1999] to an inexact non-interior continuation method for variational inequalities over general closed convex sets. Newton equations involved in the me…
Quantum relative entropies are jointly convex functions of two positive definite matrices that generalize the Kullback-Leibler divergence and arise naturally in quantum information theory. In this paper, we prove self-concordance of natural barrier functions for the epigraphs of various quantum relative entropies and divergences. Furthermore we show that these barriers have optimal barrier parameter. These barriers allow convex optimization problems involving quantum relative entropies to be directly solved using interior point methods for non-symmetric cones, avoiding the approximations and l…

We consider the minimization of a continuous function over the intersection of a regular cone with an affine set via a new class of adaptive first- and second-order optimization methods, building on the Hessian-barrier techniques introduced in [Bomze, Mertikopoulos, Schachinger, and Staudigl, Hessian barrier algorithms for linearly constrained optimization problems, SIAM Journal on Optimization, 2019]. Our approach is based on a potential-reduction mechanism and attains a suitably defined class of approximate first- or second-order KKT points with the optimal worst-case iteration complexity $O…
We construct a general framework for deriving error bounds for conic feasibility problems. In particular, our approach allows one to work with cones that fail to be amenable or even to have computable projections, two previously challenging barriers. For the purpose, we first show how error bounds may be constructed using objects called one-step facial residual functions. Then, we develop several tools to compute these facial residual functions even in the absence of closed form expressions for the projections onto the cones. We demonstrate the use and power of our results by computing tight e…

Self-concordance is the most important property required for barriers in convex programming. It is intrinsically linked to the affine structure of the underlying space. Here we introduce an alternative notion of self-concordance which is linked to the projective structure. A function on a set $X \subset A^n$ in an $n$-dimensional affine space is projectively self-concordant if and only if it can be extended to an affinely self-concordant logarithmically homogeneous function on the conic extension $K \subset V^{n+1}$ of $X$ in the $(n+1)$-dimensional vector space obtained by homogenization of $…
This paper focuses on safety critical control with sector-bounded uncertainties at the plant input. The uncertainties can represent nonlinear and/or time-varying components. We propose a new robust control barrier function (RCBF) approach to enforce safety requirements in the presence of these uncertainties. The primary objective is to minimally alter the given baseline control command to guarantee safety in the presence of modeled uncertainty. The resulting min-norm optimization problem can be recast as a Second-Order Cone Program (SOCP) to enable online implementation. Properties of this con…

We solve the truncated K-moment problem when $K\subseteq R^n$ is the closure of a, not necessarily bounded, open set (which includes the important cases $K=R^n$ and $K=R^n_+$). That is, we completely characterize the interior of the convex cone of finite sequences that have a representing measure on $K\subseteq R^n$. It is in fact the domain of the Legendre-Fenchel transform associated with a certain convex function. And so in this context, detecting whether a sequence is in the interior of this cone reduces to solving a finite-dimensional convex optimization problem. This latter problem is re…
A convex cone is homogeneous if its automorphism group acts transitively on the interior of the cone, i.e., for every pair of points in the interior of the cone, there exists a cone automorphism that maps one point to the other. Cones that are homogeneous and self-dual are called symmetric. The symmetric cones include the positive semidefinite matrix cone and the second order cone as important practical examples. In this paper, we consider the less well-studied conic optimization problems over cones that are homogeneous but not necessarily self-dual. We start with cones of positive semidefinit…

In this paper we consider the safety verification and safe controller synthesis problems for nonlinear control systems. The Control Barrier Certificates (CBC) approach is proposed as an extension to the Barrier certificates approach. Our approach can be used to characterize the control invariance of a given set in terms of safety of a general nonlinear control system subject to input constraints. From the point of view of controller design, the proposed method provides an approach to synthesize a safe control law that guarantees that the trajectories of the system starting from a given initial…
We consider the problem of estimating an unknown signal $x_0$ from noisy linear observations $y = Ax_0 + z\in R^m$. In many practical instances, $x_0$ has a certain structure that can be captured by a structure inducing convex function $f(\cdot)$. For example, $\ell_1$ norm can be used to encourage a sparse solution. To estimate $x_0$ with the aid of $f(\cdot)$, we consider the well-known LASSO method and provide sharp characterization of its performance. We assume the entries of the measurement matrix $A$ and the noise vector $z$ have zero-mean normal distributions with variances $1$ and $σ^2…
