The purpose of this article is to give a proof of the Orbifold Theorem announced by Thurston in late 1981: If $O$ is a compact, connected, orientable, irreducible and topologically atoroidal 3-orbifold with non-empty ramification locus, then $O$ is geometric. As a corollary, any smooth orientation preserving non-free finite group action on $S^3$ is conjugate to an orthogonal action.

Geometrization of 3-orbifolds of cyclic type

We give a complete proof of Thurston's Orbifold Theorem for very good 3-orbifolds of cyclic type. An orbifold is said to be very good when it has a finite cover which is a manifold. A 3-orbifold is of cyclic type if the singular set is a non-empty 1-manifold transverse to the boundary.

Geometrization of Three-Dimensional Orbifolds via Ricci Flow

A three-dimensional closed orientable orbifold (with no bad suborbifolds) is known to have a geometric decomposition from work of Perelman along with earlier work of Boileau-Leeb-Porti and Cooper-Hodgson-Kerckhoff. We give a new, logically independent, unified proof of the geometrization of orbifolds, using Ricci flow. Along the way we develop some tools for the geometry of orbifolds that may be of independent interest.

Geometrization of 3-dimensional Coxeter orbifolds and Singer's conjecture

Associated to any Coxeter system $(W,S)$, there is a labeled simplicial complex $L$ and a contractible CW-complex $Σ_L$ (the Davis complex) on which $W$ acts properly and cocompactly. $Σ_L$ admits a cellulation under which the nerve of each vertex is $L$. Small hyperbolic polyhedra

We classify the 3-dimensional hyperbolic polyhedral orbifolds that contain no embedded essential 2-suborbifolds, up to decomposition along embedded hyperbolic triangle orbifolds (turnovers). Peripheral separability and cusps of arithmetic hyperbolic orbifolds

For X = R, C, or H it is well known that cusp cross-sections of finite volume X-hyperbolic (n+1)-orbifolds are flat n-orbifolds or almost flat orbifolds modelled on the (2n+1)-dimensional Heisenberg group N_{2n+1} or the (4n+3)-dimensional quaternionic Heisenberg group N_{4n+3}(H). We give a necessary and sufficient condition for such manifolds to be diffeomorphic to a cusp cross-section of an arithmetic X-hyperbolic (n+1)-orbifold. A principal tool in the proof of this classification theorem is a subgroup separability result which may be of independent interest.

The maximum injectivity radius of hyperbolic orbifolds

For two-dimensional orientable hyperbolic orbifolds, we show that the radius of a maximal embedded disk is greater or equal to an explicit constant ρ_T, with equality if and only if the orbifold is a sphere with three cone points of order 2, 3 and 7.

Dimension of representation and character varieties for two and three-orbifolds

We consider varieties of representations and characters of 2 and 3-dimensional orbifolds in semisimple Lie groups, and we focus on computing their dimension. Generalised spin structures on 2-dimensional orbifolds

Generalised spin structures, or r-spin structures, on a 2-dimensional orbifold Σare r-fold fibrewise connected coverings (also called r-th roots) of its unit tangent bundle STΣ. We investigate such structures on hyperbolic orbifolds. The conditions on r for such structures to exist are given. The action of the diffeomorphism group of Σon the set of r-spin structures is described, and we determine the number of orbits under this action and their size. These results are then applied to describe the moduli space of taut contact circles on left-quotients of the 3-dimensional geometry \tilde{SL}_2.

Blowdowns and McKay correspondence on four dimensional quasitoric orbifolds

We prove the existence of torus invariant almost complex structure on any positively omnioriented four dimensional primitive quasitoric orbifold. We construct pseudo-holomorphic blowdown maps for such orbifolds. We prove a version of McKay correspondence when the blowdowns are crepant.
