A number of constructions in function field arithmetic involve extensions from linear objects using digit expansions. This technique is described here as a method of constructing orthonormal bases in spaces of continuous functions. We illustrate several examples of orthonormal bases from this viewpoint, and we also obtain a concrete model for the continuous functions on the integers of a local field as a quotient of a Tate algebra in countably many variables.

A comparison of the Carlitz and digit derivatives bases in function field arithmetic

In this paper we compare several properties and constructions of the Carlitz polynomials and digit derivatives for continuous functions on $\F_q[[T]].$ In particular, we show a close relation between them as orthonormal bases. Moreover, parallel to Carlitz's coefficient formula, we give the closed formula for the expansion coefficients in terms of the digit derivatives.

Cartier operators on fields of positive characteristic p

From an analytical perspective, we introduce a sequence of Cartier operators that act on the field of formal Laurent series in one variable with coefficients in a field of positive characteristic $p$. Large deviation principle for harmonic/geometric/arithmetic mean of digits in backward continued fraction expansion

We establish the (level-1) large deviation principles for three kinds of means associated with the backward continued fraction expansion. We show that: for the harmonic and geometric means, the rate functions vanish exactly at one point; for the arithmetic mean, it is completely degenerate, vanishing at every point in its effective domain. A hybrid inequality of Erdös-Turán-Koksma for digital sequences

For bases $\mathbf{b}=(b_1,..., b_s)$ of $s$ not necessarily distinct integers $b_i\ge 2$, we prove a version of the inequality of \etk \ for the hybrid function system composed of the Walsh functions in base $\bfb^{(1)}=(b_1,..., b_{s_1})$ and, as second component, the $\bfb^{(2)}$-adic functions, $\bfb^{(2)}=(b_{s_1+1},..., b_s)$, with $s=s_1+s_2$, $s_1$ and $s_2$ not both equal to 0. Further, we point out why this choice of a hybrid function system covers all possible cases of sequences that employ addition of digit vectors as their main construction principle.

Large Deviation Principle for arithmetic functions in continued fraction expansion

Khinchin proved that the arithmetic mean of continued fraction digits of Lebesgue almost every irrational number in $(0,1)$ diverges to infinity. Hence, none of the classical limit theorems such as the weak and strong laws of large numbers or central limit theorems hold. Nevertheless, we prove the existence of a large deviations rate function which estimates exponential probabilities with which the arithmetic mean of digits stays away from infinity.
