Spontaneous Transitions in Quantum Mechanics

The problem of spontaneous pair creation in static external fields is reconsidered. A weak version of the conjecture proposed by G Nenciu (1980) is seated and proved. The method reduces the proof of the general conjecture to the study of the evolution, associated with a time dependent Hamiltonian, of a vector which is eigenvector of this Hamiltonian at some given time. Possible ways of proving the general conjecture are discussed.

Simple models exhibiting spontaneous symmetry breakdown in classical and non-relativistic quantum mechanics

First, the properties of a classical model of spontaneous symmetry breakdown are analyzed. Then, the pros and cons of some pedagogical non-relativistic quantum-mechanical models, also used to illustrate spontaneous symmetry breakdown, are discussed. Finally, a simple quantum-mechanical toy model (a spinor on the line, with a spin-dependent interaction) is presented, that exhibits the spontaneous breaking of an internal symmetry.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breakdown in non-relativistic Quantum Mechanics

The advantages and disadvantages of some pedagogical non-relativistic quantum-mechanical models, used to illustrate spontaneous symmetry breakdown, are discussed. Quantum mechanics as a spontaneously broken gauge theory on a U(1) gerbe

Any quantum-mechanical system possesses a U(1) gerbe naturally defined on configuration space. Acting on Feynman's kernel exp(iS/h), this U(1) symmetry allows one to arbitrarily pick the origin for the classical action S, on a point-by-point basis on configuration space. This is equivalent to the statement that quantum mechanics is a U(1) gauge theory. Unlike Yang-Mills theories, however, the geometry of this gauge symmetry is not given by a fibre bundle, but rather by a gerbe. Entanglement of boundary conditions giving rise to spontaneous symmetry breaking in quantum mechanics

We study spontaneous symmetry breaking in one dimensional quantum mechanical problems in terms of two-point boundary problems which lead to singular potentials containing Dirac delta functions and its derivatives. We search for broken-symmetry bound states. For a particular entanglement of boundary conditions, we show the existence of a ground state, giving rise to a spontaneous symmetry breaking, stable under the phenomenon of decoherence generated from external fluctuations. We discuss the model in the context of the "chiral" broken-symmetry states of molecules like $NH_3$.

Spontaneous breaking of permutation symmetry in pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics

By adding an imaginary interacting term proportional to ip_1p_2 to the Hamiltonian of a free anisotropic planar oscillator, we construct a new model which is described by the PT-pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonian with the permutation symmetry of two dimensions. We prove that our model is equivalent to the Pais-Uhlenbeck oscillator and thus establish a relationship between our PT-pseudo-Hermitian system and the fourth-order derivative oscillator model. Self-adjoint extensions and SUSY breaking in Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

We consider the self-adjoint extensions (SAE) of the symmetric supercharges and Hamiltonian for a model of SUSY Quantum Mechanics in $\mathbb{R}^+$ with a singular superpotential. We show that only for two particular SAE, whose domains are scale invariant, the algebra of N=2 SUSY is realized, one with manifest SUSY and the other with spontaneously broken SUSY. Otherwise, only the N=1 SUSY algebra is obtained, with spontaneously broken SUSY and non degenerate energy spectrum.

Conservation of pseudo-norm in PT symmetric quantum mechanics

An extension of the Stone's theorem to PT symmetric, extended quantum mechanics must employ its pseudo-norm. We show that the evolution of the wave functions is then pseudo-unitary, and emphasize that their pseudo-norm remains time-independent even in the spontaneously broken symmetry regime where the energies themselves cease to be real.
