This article is a follow-up of ``Holonomy and Path Structures in General Relativity and Yang-Mills Theory" by Barrett, J. W. (Int.J.Theor.Phys., vol.30, No.9, 1991). Its main goal is to provide an alternative proof of this part of the reconstruction theorem which concerns the existence of a connection. A construction of connection 1-form is presented. The formula expressing the local coefficients of connection in terms of the holonomy map is obtained as an immediate consequence of that construction. Thus the derived formula coincides with that used in "On Loop Space Formulation of Gauge Theories" by Chan, H.-M., Scharbach, P. and Tsou S.T. (Ann.Phys., vol.167, 454-472, 1986). The reconstruction and representation theorems form a generalization of the fact that the pointed configuration space of the classical Yang-Mills theory is equivalent to the set of all holonomy maps. The point of this generalization is that there is a one-to-one correspondence not only between the holonomy maps and the orbits in the space of connections, but also between all maps from the loop space on $M$ to group $G$ fulfilling some axioms and all possible equivalence classes of $P(M,G)$ bundles with connection, where the equivalence relation is defined by bundle isomorphism in a natural way.
We prove that energy minimizing Yang-Mills connections on a compact $G_{2}$-manifold has holonomy equal to $G_{2}$ are $G_{2}$-instantons, subject to an extra condition on the curvature. Furthermore, we show that energy minimizing connections on a compact Calabi-Yau $3$-fold has holonomy equal to $SU(3)$ subject to a similar condition are holomorphic.
We give a construction of $G_2$ and $Spin(7)$ instantons on exceptional holonomy manifolds constructed by Bryant and Salamon, by using an ansatz of spherical symmetry coming from the manifolds being the total spaces of rank-4 vector bundles. In the $G_2$ case, we show that, in the asymptotically conical model, the connections are asymptotic to Hermitian Yang-Mills connections on the nearly Kähler $S^3\times S^3$.
The connection between Yang--Mills gauge fields on $4$-dimensional orientable compact Riemannian manifolds and modified Lévy Laplacians is studied. A modified Lévy Laplacian is obtained from the Lévy Laplacian by the action of an infinite dimensional rotation. Under the assumption that the 4-manifold has a nontrivial restricted holonomy group of the bundle of self-dual 2-forms, the following is proved. There is a modified Lévy Laplacian such that a parallel transport in some vector bundle over the 4-manifold is a solution of the Laplace equation for this modified Lévy Laplacian if and only if …
We quantize abelian Yang-Mills theory on Riemannian manifolds with boundaries in any dimension. The quantization proceeds in two steps. First, the classical theory is encoded into an axiomatic form describing solution spaces associated to manifolds. Second, the quantum theory is constructed from the classical axiomatic data in a functorial manner. The target is general boundary quantum field theory, a TQFT-type axiomatic formulation of quantum field theory.
We study planar random holonomy fields which are processes indexed by paths on the plane which behave well under the concatenation and orientation-reversing operations on paths. We define the Planar Markovian Holonomy Fields as planar random holonomy fields which satisfy some independence and invariance by area-preserving homeomorphisms properties. We use the theory of braids in the framework of classical probabilities: for finite and infinite random sequences the notion of invariance by braids is defined and we prove a new version of the de-Finetti's Theorem. This allows us to construct a fam…
A classic result in the foundations of Yang-Mills theory, due to J. W. Barrett ["Holonomy and Path Structures in General Relativity and Yang-Mills Theory." Int. J. Th. Phys. 30(9), (1991)], establishes that given a "generalized" holonomy map from the space of piece-wise smooth, closed curves based at some point of a manifold to a Lie group, there exists a principal bundle with that group as structure group and a principal connection on that bundle such that the holonomy map corresponds to the holonomies of that connection. Barrett also provided one sense in which this "recovery theorem" yields…
Instantons in pure Yang-Mills theories on partially periodic space $\mathbb{R}^3\times S^1$ are usually called calorons. The background periodicity brings on characteristic features of calorons such as non-trivial holonomy, which plays an essential role for confinement/deconfinement transition in pure Yang-Mills gauge theory. For the case of gauge group $SU(2)$, calorons can be interpreted as composite objects of two constituent "monopoles" with opposite magnetic charges. There are often the cases that the two monopole charges are unbalanced so that the calorons possess net magnetic charge in …
The solution of quantum Yang-Mills theory on arbitrary compact two-manifolds is well known. We bring this solution into a TQFT-like form and extend it to include corners. Our formulation is based on an axiomatic system that we hope is flexible enough to capture actual quantum field theories also in higher dimensions. We motivate this axiomatic system from a formal Schroedinger-Feynman quantization procedure. We also discuss the physical meaning of unitarity, the concept of vacuum, (partial) Wilson loops and non-orientable surfaces.
We consider the minimum Yang-Mills energy on the complete $G_{2}$-manifolds and Calabi-Yau 3-folds,the connection $A$ is a stability Yang-Mills connection on the $G$-bundle $E$.We prove that the connection must be a $G_{2}$-instanton on $G_{2}$-manifold and the bundle is holomorphic on Calabi-Yau 3-fold with holonomy $SU(3)$.
We present a unified eight-dimensional approach to instanton equations on several seven-dimensional manifolds associated to a six-dimensional homogeneous nearly Kähler manifold. The cone over the sine-cone on a nearly Kähler manifold has holonomy group Spin(7) and can be foliated by submanifolds with either holonomy group G_2, a nearly parallel G_2-structure or a cocalibrated G_2-structure. We show that there is a G_2-instanton on each of these seven-dimensional manifolds which gives rise to a Spin(7)-instanton in eight dimensions. The well-known octonionic instantons on R^7 and R^8 are contai…
The master field is the large $N$ limit of the Yang-Mills measure on the Euclidean plane. It can be viewed as a non-commutative process indexed by paths on the plane. We construct and study generalized master fields, called free planar Markovian holonomy fields, which are versions of the master field where the law of a simple loop can be as more general as it is possible. We prove that those free planar Markovian holonomy fields can be seen as well as the large $N$ limit of some Markovian holonomy fields on the plane with unitary structure group.
In this paper we continue the development of quantum holonomy theory, which is a candidate for a fundamental theory based on gauge fields and non-commutative geometry. The theory is build around the QHD(M) algebra, which is generated by parallel transports along flows of vector fields and translation operators on an underlying configuration space of connections, and involves a semi-final spectral triple with an infinite-dimensional Bott-Dirac operator. Previously we have proven that the square of the Bott-Dirac operator gives the free Hamilton operator of a Yang-Mills theory coupled to a fermi…
We investigate Yang--Mills instanton theory over four dimensional asymptotically locally flat (ALF) geometries, including gravitational instantons of this type, by exploiting the existence of a natural smooth compactification of these spaces introduced by Hausel--Hunsicker--Mazzeo. First referring to the codimension 2 singularity removal theorem of Sibner--Sibner and Rade we prove that given a smooth, finite energy, self-dual SU(2) connection over a complete ALF space, its energy is congruent to a Chern--Simons invariant of the boundary three-manifold if the connection satisfies a certain holo…
In this paper we establish the existence of the non-perturbative theory of quantum gravity known as quantum holonomy theory by showing that a Hilbert space representation of the QHD(M) algebra, which is an algebra generated by holonomy-diffeomorphisms and by translation operators on an underlying configuration space of Ashtekar connections, exist. We construct operators, which correspond to the Hamiltonian of general relativity and the Dirac Hamiltonian, and show that they give rise to their classical counterparts in a classical limit. We also find that the structure of an almost-commutative s…
Starting with minimal requirements from the physical experience with higher gauge theories, i.e. gauge theories for a tower of differential forms of different form degrees, we discover that all the structural identities governing such theories can be concisely recombined into a so-called Q-structure or, equivalently, a Lie infinity algebroid. This has many technical and conceptual advantages: Complicated higher bundles become just bundles in the category of Q-manifolds in this approach (the many structural identities being encoded in the one operator Q squaring to zero), gauge transformations …
We derive a new version of SU(3) non-Abelian Stokes theorem by making use of the coherent state representation on the coset space $SU(3)/(U(1)\times U(1))=F_2$, the flag space. Then we outline a derivation of the area law of the Wilson loop in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge (The detailed exposition will be given in a forthcoming article). This derivation is performed by combining the non-Abelian Stokes theorem with the reformulation of the Yang-Mills theory as a perturbative deformation of a topological field theory recently proposed by one of the authors. Within this fra…
Using (partial) curvature flows and the transitive action of subgroups of O(d,Z) on the indices {1,...,d} of the components of the Yang-Mills curvature in an orthonormal basis, we obtain a nested system of equations in successively higher dimensions d, each implying the Yang-Mills equations on d-dimensional Riemannian manifolds possessing special geometric structures. This `matryoshka' of self-duality equations contains the familiar self-duality equations on Riemannian 4-folds as well as their generalisations on complex Kähler 3-folds and on 7- and 8-dimensional manifolds with G_2 and Spin(7) …
We construct and study the Yang-Mills measure in two dimensions. According to the informal description given by the physicists, it is a probability measure on the space of connections modulo gauge transformations on a principal bundle with compact structure group. We are interested in the case where the base space of this bundle is a compact orientable surface. The construction of the measure in a discrete setting, where the base space of the fiber bundle is replaced by a graph traced on a surface, is quite well understood thanks to the work of E. Witten. In contrast, the continuum limit of th…
We derive a new version of the non-Abelian Stokes theorem for the Wilson loop in the SU(N) case by making use of the coherent state representation on the coset space $SU(N)/U(1)^{N-1}=F_{N-1}$, the flag space. We consider the SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge in which SU(N) is broken down to $U(1)^{N-1}$. First, we show that the Abelian dominance in the string tension follows from this theorem and the Abelian-projected effective gauge theory that was derived by one of the authors. Next (but independently), combining the non-Abelian Stokes theorem with a novel reformulation o…
Morse-Smale-Floer homology associates the critical points of the action functional of a classical field theory over a manifold to its homology. We associate to the intersection homology of certain Lagrangian submanifolds of R^4 the critical points of a quantum effective action of large-N SU(N) YM. For this purpose we construct in YM a trivial Topological Field Theory defined by twistor Wilson loops whose v.e.v. is 1 in the large-N limit for any shape of the loops supported on certain punctured Lagrangian submanifolds. We derive a new holomorphic loop equation for the twistor Wilson loops, that…
