In this paper we are presenting the theory of balance equations of the Continuum Thermodynamics (balance systems) in a geometrical form using Poincare-Cartan formalism of the Multisymplectic Field Theory. A constitutive relation $\mathcal{C}$ of a balance system $B_{C}$ is realized as a mapping between a (partial) 1-jet bundle of the configurational bundle $π:Y\to X$ and the dual bundle similar to the Legendre mapping of the Lagrangian Field Theory. Invariant (variational) form of the balance system $B_{C}$ is presented in three different forms and the space of admissible variations is defined and studied. Action of automorphisms of the bundle $π$ on the constitutive mappings $C$ is studied and it is shown that the symmetry group $Sym(C)$ of the constitutive relation $C$ acts on the space of solutions of the balance system $B_{C}$. Suitable version of Noether Theorem for an action of a symmetry group is presented with the usage of conventional multimomentum mapping. Finally, the geometrical (bundle) picture of the Rational Extended Thermodynamics in terms of Lagrange-Liu fields is developed and the entropy principle is shown to be equivalent to the holonomicy of the current component of the constitutive section.
In this work we study the mathematical aspects of the development in the continuum thermodynamics known as the "Entropy Principle". It started with the pioneering works of B.Coleman, W.Noll and I. Muller in 60th of XX cent. and got its further development mostly in the works of G. Boillat, I-Shis Liu and T.Ruggeri. "Entropy Principle" combines in itself the structural requirement on the form of balance laws of the thermodynamical system (denote such system $(\mathcal{C})$) and on the entropy balance law with the convexity condition of the entropy density. First of these requirements has pure m…
The heat-balance integral method of Goodman is studied with two simple 1-D heat conduction problems with prescribed temperature and flux boundary conditions. These classical problems with well known exact solutions enable to demonstrate the heat-balance integral method performance by a parabolic profile and the entropy generation minimization concept in definition of the appropriate profile exponent. The basic assumption generating the additional constraints needed to perform the solution is based on the requirement to minimize the difference in the local thermal entropy generation rates calcu…

Markov process is widely applied in almost all aspects of literature, especially important for understanding non-equilibrium processes. We introduce a decomposition to general Markov process in this paper. This decomposition decomposes the process into 3 independent parts: stationary distribution, symmetric detailed-balance part and anti-symmetric breaking detailed-balance part. This complete decomposition captures the steady state as well as the dynamics of the process, providing an elegant perspective for construction or analyzing problems. In light of the decomposition, a unique definition …
This chapter concerns "control volume analysis", the standard engineering tool for the analysis of flow systems, and its application to entropy balance calculations. Firstly, the principles of control volume analysis are enunciated and applied to flows of conserved quantities (e.g. mass, momentum, energy) through a control volume, giving integral (Reynolds transport theorem) and differential forms of the conservation equations. Several definitions of steady state are discussed. The concept of "entropy" is then established using Jaynes' maximum entropy method, both in general and in equilibrium…
Under the condition of detailed balance and some additional restrictions on the size of the coefficients, we identify the equilibrium distribution to which solutions of the discrete coagulation-fragmentation system of equations converge for large times, thus showing that there is a critical mass which marks a change in the behavior of the solutions. This was previously known only for particular cases as the generalized Becker-Döring equations. Our proof is based on an inequality between the entropy and the entropy production which also gives some information on the rate of convergence to equil…

In this paper, we consider a system of balance laws sufficiently general to contain the equations describing the thermomechanics of a one-dimensional continuum; this system involves some constitutive functions depending on the elements of the so called state space assumed to contain the spatial gradients of some of the unknown fields. The compatibility of the constitutive equations with an entropy-like principle is considered via an extended Liu procedure by using as constraints both the balance equations and some of their gradient extensions. This procedure is then applied to the equations of…
We consider Markovian dynamics modeling open mesoscopic systems which are driven away from detailed balance by a nonconservative force. A systematic expansion is obtained of the stationary distribution around an equilibrium reference, in orders of the nonequilibrium forcing. The first order around equilibrium has been known since the work of McLennan (1959), and involves the transient irreversible entropy flux. The expansion generalizes the McLennan formula to higher orders, complementing the entropy flux with the dynamical activity. The latter is more kinetic than thermodynamic and is a possi…
We study the entropy production of the sandwiched Rényi divergence under the primitive Lindblad equation with GNS-detailed balance. We prove that the Lindblad equation can be identified as the gradient flow of the sandwiched Rényi divergence of any order $α \in (0, \infty)$. This extends a previous result by Carlen and Maas [Journal of Functional Analysis, 273(5), 1810-1869] for the quantum relative entropy (i.e., $α = 1$). Moreover, we show that the sandwiched Rényi divergence of any order $α \in (0, \infty)$ decays exponentially fast under the time-evolution of such a Lindblad equation.
In this study we apply the maximum entropy principle to derive the properly scaled velocity distribution function of Boltzmann equations for mixtures, which leads to a non-isothermal Maxwell-Stefan diffusion model. We also analyze the entropy balance law and derive the kinetic entropy production from the scaled distribution function.
