We prove uniqueness in inverse acoustic scattering in the case the density of the medium has an unbounded gradient across $Σ\subseteqΓ=\partialΩ$, where $Ω$ is a bounded open subset of $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ with a Lipschitz boundary. We show that the knowledge of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map on the boundary of a bounded open set in $R^n$ for the perturbed polyharmonic operator $(-Δ)^m +q$ with $q\in L^{n/2m}$, $n>2m$, determines the potential $q$ in the set uniquely. In the course of the proof, we construct a special Green function for the polyharmonic operator and establish its mapping properties in suitable weighted $L^2$ and $L^p$ spaces. The $L^p$ estimates for the special Green function are derived from $L^p$ Carleman estimates with linear weights for the polyharmonic operator.

This is a survey, which is a continuation of the previous survey of the author about applications of Carleman estimates to Inverse Problems, J. Inverse and Ill-Posed Problems, 21, 477-560, 2013. It is shown here that Tikhonov functionals for some ill-posed Cauchy problems for linear PDEs can be generated by unbounded linear operators of those PDEs. In this paper we present a novel extended Krylov subspace reduced-order modeling technique to efficiently simulate time- and frequency-domain wavefields in open complex structures. To simulate the extension to infinity, we use an optimal complex-scaling method which is equivalent to an optimized perfectly matched layer in which the frequency is fixed. We discuss a quantum mechanical indirect measurement method to recover a position dependent Hamilton matrix from time evolution of coherent quantum mechanical states through an object. We study heat traces associated with positive unbounded operators with compact inverses. With the help of the inverse Mellin transform we derive necessary conditions for the existence of a short time asymptotic expansion. The conditions are formulated in terms of the meromorphic extension of the associated spectral zeta-functions and proven to be verified for a large class of operators. We also address the problem of convergence of the obtained asymptotic expansions. General results are illustrated with a number of explicit examples.
