We study the reduction of non-autonomous regular Lagrangian systems by symmetries, which are generated by vector fields associated with connections in the configuration bundle of the system $Q\times\real\to\real$. These kind of symmetries generalize the idea of ``time-invariance'' (which corresponds to taking the trivial connection in the above trivial bundle).
The link between the tratment of singular Lagrangians as field systems and the canonical Hamiltonian approach is studied. It is shown that the singular Lagrangians as field systems are always in exact agreement with the canonical approach for the parametrization invariant theories.
The theory of gauge fields in Theoretical Physics poses several mathematical problems of interest in Differential Geometry and in Field Theory. Below we tackle one of these problems: The existence of a finite system of generators of gauge-invariant Lagrangians and how to compute them. More precisely, if $p\colon C\to M$ is the bundle of connections on a principal $G$-bundle $π\colon P\to M$, then a finite number $L_1,\dotsc,L_{N^\prime }$ of gauge-invariant Lagrangians defined on $J^1C$ is proved to exist such that for any other gauge-invariant Lagrangian $L\in C^\infty (J^1C)$ there exists a …
A general approach is presented to describing nonlinear classical Maxwell electrodynamics with conformal symmetry. We introduce generalized nonlinear constitutive equations, expressed in terms of constitutive tensors dependent on conformal-invariant functionals of the field strengths. This allows a characterization of Lagrangian and non-Lagrangian theories. We obtain a general formula for possible Lagrangian densities in nonlinear conformal-invariant electrodynamics. This generalizes the standard Lagrangian of classical linear electrodynamics so as to preserve the conformal symmetry.
We show that, in gauge theory of principal connections, any gauge non-invariant Lagrangian can be completed to the BRST-invariant one. The BRST extension of the global Chern-Simons Lagrangian is present.
The one-dimensional shallow water equations in Eulerian and Lagrangian coordinates are considered. It is shown the relationship between symmetries and conservation laws in Lagrangian (potential) coordinates and symmetries and conservation laws in mass Lagrangian variables. For equations in Lagrangian coordinates with a flat bottom an invariant difference scheme is constructed which possesses all the difference analogues of the conservation laws: mass, momentum, energy, the law of center of mass motion. Some exact invariant solutions are constructed for the invariant scheme, while the scheme ad…
In this paper we describe Routhian reduction as a special case of standard symplectic reduction, also called Marsden-Weinstein reduction. We use this correspondence to present a generalization of Routhian reduction for quasi-invariant Lagrangians, i.e. Lagrangians that are invariant up to a total time derivative. We show how functional Routhian reduction can be seen as a particular instance of reduction of a quasi-invariant Lagrangian, and we exhibit a Routhian reduction procedure for the special case of Lagrangians with quasi-cyclic coordinates. As an application we consider the dynamics of a…
We propose a generalized way to formally obtain the gauge invariance of the kinetic part of a field Lagrangian over which a gauge transformation ruled by an $SU(n)_{U} \otimes SU(m)_{V}$ coupling symmetry is applied. As an illustrative example, we employ such a formal construction for reproducing the standard model Lagrangian. This generalized formulation is supposed to contribute for initiating the study of gauge transformation applied to generalized $SU(n)_{U} \otimes SU(m)_{V}$ symmetries as well as for complementing an introductory study of the standard model of elementary particles.
General structure of classical reparametrization-invariant matter systems, mainly the relativistic particle and its $d$-brane generalization, are studied. The exposition is in close analogy with the relativistic particle in an electromagnetic field as reparametrization-invariant system. The structure of a diffeomorphism invariant Lagrangian action for an extended object ($d$-brane) embedded in a bulk space M is discussed. Our construction uses first order homogeneous Lagrangians to achieve general covariance in contrast to the constructions that use scalar Lagrangians along with metric depende…
We analyse the complex-valued Klein-Gordon Equation from an integrability perspective by the implementation of the Lie Theory of Continuous Groups, where this equation is governed by power-law nonlinearity. We write the equations in terms of real dependent variables and examine both the two-dimensional and three-dimensional models. In the case of the two-dimensional model the analysis is extended by the determination of Noether point symmetries and conserved vectors via the construction of a Lagrangian.
We discuss the problem of the existence of a regular invariant Lagrangian for a given system of invariant second-order differential equations on a Lie group $G$, using approaches based on the Helmholtz conditions. Although we deal with the problem directly on $TG$, our main result relies on a reduction of the system on $TG$ to a system on the Lie algebra of $G$. We conclude with some illustrative examples.
We deal with Lagrangian systems that are invariant under the action of a symmetry group. The mechanical connection is a principal connection that is associated to Lagrangians which have a kinetic energy function that is defined by a Riemannian metric. In this paper we extend this notion to arbitrary Lagrangians. We then derive the reduced Lagrange-Poincare equations in a new fashion and we show how solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equations can be reconstructed with the help of the mechanical connection. Illustrative examples confirm the theory.
In this paper a hidden extra symmetry of conformally invariant Lagrangians occuring in physics is pointed out. This symmetry is most apparent in a metric independent, i.e. in a Palatini-like presentation of the variational problem. In such presentation, the usual conformal weight of fields can be encoded as local dilatation group gauge charges. The conventional conformal invariance of Lagrangians is then equivalent to dilatation gauge invariance. The claim of the paper is, that the most commonly occurring conformally invariant Lagrangians turning up in physics are not only invariant to local d…
We consider the second variational derivative of a given gauge-natural invariant Lagrangian taken with respect to (prolongations of) vertical parts of gauge-natural lifts of infinitesimal principal automorphisms. By requiring such a second variational derivative to vanish, {\em via} the Second Noether Theorem we find that a covariant strongly conserved current is canonically associated with the deformed Lagrangian obtained by contracting Euler--Lagrange equations of the original Lagrangian with (prolongations of) vertical parts of gauge-natural lifts of infinitesimal principal automorphisms ly…
We show that if a Lagrangian is invariant under a transformation (with the invariance defined in the standard manner), then the equations of motion obtained from it maintain their form under the transformation. We also show that the converse is not true, giving examples of equations of motion that are form-invariant under a transformation, but these equations can be derived from a Lagrangian that is not invariant under such transformation. The conclusions are valid for discrete or continuous systems.
New geometric structures that relate the lagrangian and hamiltonian formalisms defined upon a singular lagrangian are presented. Several vector fields are constructed in velocity space that give new and precise answers to several topics like the projectability of a vector field to a hamiltonian vector field, the computation of the kernel of the presymplectic form of lagrangian formalism, the construction of the lagrangian dynamical vector fields, and the characterisation of dynamical symmetries.
Given a smooth compact Riemannian manifold $M$ and a Hamiltonian $H$ on the cotangent space $T^*M$, strictly convex and superlinear in the momentum variables, we prove uniqueness of certain ergodic invariant Lagrangian graphs within a given homology or cohomology class. In particular, in the context of quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems, our result implies global uniqueness of Lagrangian KAM tori with rotation vector $ρ$. This result extends generically to the $C^0$-closure of KAM tori.
We present a new group-theoretical technique to calculate weak field expansions for some Feynman diagrams using invariant polynomials of the dihedral group. In particular we show results obtained for the first coefficients of the three loop effective lagrangian of 1+1 QED in an external constant field, where the dihedral symmetry appears. Our results suggest that a closed form involving rational numbers and the Riemann zeta function might exist for these coefficients.
For a given configuration space $M$ and Lie algebra $g$ whose action is defined on $M$, the space $V_{0.0}$ of weakly $g$-invariant Lagrangians (i.e. Lagrangians whose motion equations left hand sides are $g$-invariant) is studied. The problem is reformulated in the terms of the double complex of Lie algebra cochains with values in the complex of Lagrangians. Calculating the cohomology of this complex using the method of spectral sequences, we come to the hierarchy in the space $V_{0.0}$: The double filtration $V_{s.r}$ ($s=0,1,2,3,4;r=0,1$) and the homomorphisms on every space $V_{s.r}$ are c…
Free vector fields, satisfying the Lorenz condition, are investigated in details in the momentum picture of motion in Lagrangian quantum field theory. The field equations are equivalently written in terms of creation and annihilation operators and on their base the commutation relations are derived. Some problems concerning the vacuum and state vectors of free vector field are discussed. Special attention is paid to peculiarities of the massless case; in particular, the electromagnetic field is explored. Several Lagrangians, describing free vector fields, are considered and the basic consequen…
We study geometry of the phase space for finite-dimensional dynamical systems with degenerate Lagrangians. The Lagrangian and Hamiltonian constraint formalisms are treated as different local-coordinate pictures of the same invariant procedure. The invariant description is given in terms of geometrical objects associated with the structure of foliation on the phase space.
We show that the Power-Zienau-Woolley picture of the electrodynamics of nonrelativistic neutral particles (atoms) can be derived from a gauge-invariant Lagrangian without making reference to any gauge whatsoever in the process. This equivalence is independent of choices of canonical field momentum or quantization strategies. In the process, we emphasize that in nonrelativistic (quantum) electrodynamics, the all-time appropriate generalized coordinate for the field is the transverse part of the vector potential, which is itself gauge invariant, and the use of which we recommend regardless of th…
The Lagrangian description of mechanical systems and the Legendre Transformation (considered as a passage from the Lagrangian to the Hamiltonian formulation of the dynamics) for point-like objects, for which the infinitesimal configuration space is TM, is based on the existence of canonical symplectic isomorphisms of double vector bundles T*TM, T*TM, and TT*M. We show that there exist an analogous picture in the dynamics of objects for which the configuration space is the vector bundle of n-vectors, if we make use of certain graded bundle structures of degree n, i.e. objects generalizing vecto…
We show that the specific operators V^a appearing in the triplectic formalism can be viewed as the anti-Hamiltonian vector fields generated by a second rank irreducible Sp(2) tensor. This allows for an explicit realization of the triplectic algebra being constructed from an arbitrary Poisson bracket on the space of the fields only, equipped by the flat Poisson connection. We show that the whole space of fields and antifields can be equipped with an even supersymplectic structure when this Poisson bracket is non-degenerate. This observation opens the possibility to provide the BRST/antiBRST pat…
One of the difficulties encountered when studying physical theories in discrete space-time is that of describing the underlying continuous symmetries (like Lorentz, or Galilei invariance). One of the ways of addressing this difficulty is to consider point transformations acting simultaneously on difference equations and lattices. In a previous article we have classified ordinary difference schemes invariant under Lie groups of point transformations. The present article is devoted to an invariant Lagrangian formalism for scalar single-variable difference schemes. The formalism is used to obtain…
We study the geometric nature of the Jacobi equation. In particular we prove that Jacobi vector fields (JVFs) along a solution of the Euler-Lagrange (EL) equations are themselves solutions of the EL equations but considered on a non-standard algebroid (different from the tangent bundle Lie algebroid). As a consequence we obtain a simple non-computational proof of the relation between the null subspace of the second variation of the action and the presence of JVFs (and conjugate points) along an extremal. We work in the framework of skew-symmetric algebroids.
This Ph.D. thesis is devoted to the constructions of Lagrangian formulation on Finsler and Kawaguchi manifolds. While Finsler geometry is a natural extension of Riemannian geometry, Kawaguchi geometry is the extension of Finsler geometry to higher order derivatives and to k-dimensional parameter space. The latter extension is also called areal geometry in some references. On Finsler (Kawaguchi) manifold, we can define a reparameterisation invariant 1 (k)-dimensional area by the Hilbert (Kawaguchi) form, which we take as an action. The equation of motion obtained from such action also has the p…
We propose a novel algorithmic method for constructing invariant variational schemes of systems of ordinary differential equations that are the Euler-Lagrange equations of a variational principle. The method is based on the invariantization of standard, non-invariant discrete Lagrangian functionals using equivariant moving frames. The invariant variational schemes are given by the Euler-Lagrange equations of the corresponding invariantized discrete Lagrangian functionals. We showcase this general method by constructing invariant variational schemes of ordinary differential equations that prese…
The second-order equation in the (1/2,0)+(0,1/2) representation of the Lorentz group has been proposed by A. Barut in the 70s. It permits to explain the mass splitting of leptons (e,mu,tau). Recently, the interest has grown to this model (see, for instance, the papers by S. Kruglov and J. P. Vigier et al). We continue the research deriving the equation from the first principles, finding dynamical invariants for this model, investigating the influence of potential interactions.
Motivated by various results on homogeneous geodesics of Riemannian spaces, we study homogeneous trajectories, i.e. trajectories which are orbits of a one-parameter symmetry group, of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems. We present criteria under which an orbit of a one-parameter subgroup of a symmetry group G is a solution of the Euler-Lagrange or Hamiltonian equations. In particular, we generalize the `geodesic lemma' known in Riemannian geometry to Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems. We present results on the existence of homogeneous trajectories of Lagrangian systems. We study Hamiltonian a…
