Generators of positive C_0-semigroups on C^*-algebras and C_0^*-semigroups on von Neumann algebras are examined. A characterization due to Bratteli and Robinson in the C_0-case is proven in the C_0^*-case. Under the additional assumptions of unitality and contractivity of the semigroup another characterization of the generator is given. This result is restated for the dual and predual semigroup.
This paper is an introduction to the von Neumann entropy in a historic approach. Von Neumann's gedanken experiment is repeated, which led him to the formula of thermodynamic entropy of a statistical operator. In the analysis of his ideas we stress the role of superselection sectors and summarize von Neumann's knowledge about quantum mechanical entropy. The final part of the paper is devoted to important developments discovered long after von Neumann's work. Subadditivity and the interpretation of the von Neumann entropy as channel capacity are among those.

In this paper we describe the structure of all sequential isomorphisms between the sets of von Neumann algebra effects. We obtain a number of explicit estimates for quasi-norms of pseudo-differential operators in the Schatten-von Neumann classes $S_q$ with $0<q\le 1$. The estimates are applied to derive semi-classical bounds for operators with smooth or non-smooth symbols.

Quantum bialgebras derivable from Uq(sl2) which contain idempotents and von Neumann regular Cartan-like generators are introduced and investigated. Various types of antipodes (invertible and von Neumann regular) on these bialgebras are constructed, which leads to a Hopf algebra structure and a von Neumann-Hopf algebra structure, respectively. We present a simplified proof of the von Neumann's Quantum Ergodic Theorem. This important result was initially published in german by J. von Neumann in 1929. We are interested here in the time evolution $ψ_t$, $t\geq 0$, (for large times) under the Schrodinger equation associated to a given fixed Hamiltonian $H : \mathcal{H} \to \mathcal{H}$ and a general initial condition $ψ_0$. In this article, we prove various smooth uncertainty principles on von Neumann bi-algebras, which unify numbers of uncertainty principles on quantum symmetries, such as subfactors, and fusion bi-algebras etc, studied in quantum Fourier analysis. We also obtain Widgerson-Wigderson type uncertainty principles for von Neumann bi-algebras. Moreover, we give a complete answer to a conjecture proposed by A. Wigderson and Y. Wigderson.
