We show that if the solar and atmospheric data are both described by maximal vacuum oscillations at the relevant mass scales then there exists a unique mixing matrix for three neutrino flavors. The solution necessarily conserves CP and automatically implies that there is no disappearance of atmospheric $ν_e$, consistent with indications from the Super-Kamiokande experiment. We also investigate the consequences for three-neutrino mixing if the solar and atmospheric oscillations exhibit mixing that is large but not maximal. For non-maximal mixing $ν_e\leftrightarrowν_τ$ and $ν_e\leftrightarrowν_μ$ oscillations are predicted that may be observable in future long-baseline experiments.
We expound the impact of extra sterile species on the ultra high energy neutrino fluxes in neutrino telescopes. We use three types of well-known flux ratios and compare the values of these flux ratios in presence of sterile neutrinos, with those predicted by deviation from the tribimaximal mixing scheme. We show that in the upcoming neutrino telescopes, its easy to confuse between the signature of sterile neutrinos with that of the deviation from tribimaximal mixing. We also show that if the measured flux ratios acquire a value well outside the range predicted by the standard scenario with thr…
The neutrino mixing parameters are thoroughly studied using renormalization-group evolution of Dirac neutrinos with recently proposed parametrization of the neutrino mixing angles referred as `high-scale mixing relations'. The correlations among all neutrino mixing and $CP$ violating observables are investigated. The predictions for the neutrino mixing angle $θ_{23}$ are precise, and could be easily tested by ongoing and future experiments. We observe that the high scale mixing unification hypothesis is incompatible with Dirac neutrinos due to updated experimental data.
We review the status of three-neutrino mixing and the results of global analyses of short-baseline neutrino oscillation data in 3+1 and 3+2 neutrino mixing schemes.
We present an overview of recent progress in the phenomenological study of neutrino masses, lepton flavor mixing and CP violation. We concentrate on the model-independent properties of massive neutrinos, both in vacuum and in matter. Current experimental constraints on the neutrino mass spectrum and the lepton flavor mixing parameters are summarized. The Dirac- and Majorana-like phases of CP violation, which are associated respectively with the long-baseline neutrino oscillations and the neutrinoless double beta decay, are discussed in detail. The seesaw mechanism, the leptogenesis scenario an…
If, as suggested by the SuperKamiokande results, the mu neutrino and tau neutrino are maximally and ``rapidly'' mixed, this alone determines the mapping from current to mass eigenstates up to one rotation angle (theta) mixing the electron neutrino ``more slowly'', with an equal combination of the mu neutrino and tau neutrino. For sin 2 theta = 1, the resulting minimal number of free parameters, yet maximal mixing, shows agreement between extant observations of solar neutrinos and predictions by the standard solar model with minor modifications.
In this review we present the main features of the current status of neutrino physics. After a review of the theory of neutrino mixing and oscillations, we discuss the current status of solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments. We show that the current data can be nicely accommodated in the framework of three-neutrino mixing. We discuss also the problem of the determination of the absolute neutrino mass scale through Tritium beta-decay experiments and astrophysical observations, and the exploration of the Majorana nature of massive neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decay…
In the paper "Big Bang Nucleosynthesis and Active-Sterile Neutrino Mixing: Evidence for Maximal Muon-Neutrino/Sterile-Neutrino Mixing in Super Kamiokande" (astro-ph/9810075), we suggested that to evade the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis exclusion of the muon neutrino to sterile neutrino oscillation explanation of the Super Kamiokande data, the tau neutrino must have a mass over about 15 eV and it must mix with a lighter sterile neutrino. A stable tau neutrino with this mass is inconsistent with cosmological structure formation. In a comment on our paper (astro-ph/9811067), Foot and Volkas argued tha…
We point out two simple but instructive possibilities to construct the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices, from which the nearly bi-maximal neutrino mixing with large T violation can naturally emerge. The two lepton mixing scenarios are compatible very well with current experimental data on solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations, and one of them may lead to an observable T-violating asymmetry between ν_μ--> ν_e and ν_e --> ν_μtransitions in the long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. Their implications on the neutrinoless double beta decay are also discussed.
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) have been suggested to be sources of very high energy neutrinos. We consider the possibility of using AGN neutrinos to test neutrino mixings. From the atmospheric, solar and laboratory data on neutrino oscillations we derive the flavour composition of the AGN neutrino flux in different neutrino mixing schemes. We show that most of the schemes considered can be distinguished from each other and the existence of a sterile neutrino can be specially tested. AGN neutrinos can also be used to test those four-neutrino scenarios where solar neutrinos oscillate into an arbi…
We derive a new set of sum rules between the neutrino mass and mixing parameters in vacuum and their effective counterparts in matter. The moduli of nine genuine lepton mixing matrix elements can then be calculated in terms of the matter-corrected ones, and the latter can directly be determined from a variety of long-baseline neutrino oscillations. We show that it is possible to reconstruct the leptonic unitarity triangles and CP violation in a similar parametrization-independent way.
The results of all currently operating solar neutrino experiments are analyzed in the framework of the resonant neutrino spin--flavor precession scenario including the effects of neutrino mixing. Nine different profiles of the solar magnetic field are used in the calculations. It is shown that the available experimental data can be accounted for within the considered scenario. The Ga--Ge data lead to an upper limit on the neutrino mixing angle: $\sin 2θ_0 \aprle 0.25$. One can discriminate between small mixing angle ($\sin 2θ_0 \aprle 0.1$) and moderate mixing angle solutions by studying the s…
We have studied how observables of the neutrino mixing matrix can link up with the ones in the quark sector. The deviation from the bi-maximal flavor mixing is parameterized using a 3 x 3 unitary matrix. The neutrino mixings are investigated supposing this unitary matrix to be hierarchical like the quark mixing matrix. We obtain the remarkable prediction |U_{e3}| >= 0.03 from the experimentally allowed range tan^2 theta_{sol} = 0.24 ~ 0.89. The CP violation in neutrino oscillations is expected to be very small.
We consider various neutrino mixing matrix parametrizations and the dependence of the mixing angles and CP-violating phase on the different parametrizations. The transformations of neutrino mixing parameters between various parametrizations are presented. Although the $θ_{13}$ mixing angle is determined to be small in the conventional parametrization, we note that in several other parametrizations the values of $θ_{13}$ are quite large. Should the value of $θ_{13}$ turn out to be tiny in the conventional parametrization, this study suggests that other alternative mixing matrix representations …
I propose a simple extension of the bi-maximal neutrino mixing pattern, allowing slight coupling between solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations as well as large CP violation. The new scenario is compatible with either the vacuum oscillation solution or the large-angle MSW solution to the solar neutrino
The neutrinos from galactic supernovae can be detected by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory and the Super-Kamiokande. The effect of neutrino mass can show up in the observed neutrino signal by (i) delay in the time of flight and (ii) distortion of the neutrino energy spectrum due to flavor mixing. We discuss a combination of the two effects for both charged and neutral current processes in the detectors for realistic three flavor scenarios and show that neutrino flavor mixing can lead to non-trivial changes in the event rate as a function of time.
Several cosmologically distant astrophysical sources may produce high-energy cosmic neutrinos (E \geq 10^6 GeV) of all flavors above the atmospheric neutrino background. We study the effects of vacuum neutrino mixing in three flavor framework on this cosmic neutrino flux. We also consider the effects of possible mixing between the three active neutrinos and the (fourth) sterile neutrino with or without Big-Bang nucleosynthesis constraints and estimate the resulting final high-energy cosmic neutrino flux ratios on earth compatible with currently existing different neutrino oscillation hints in …
We propose a phenomenological model of lepton mixing and CP violation based on the flavor democracy of charge leptons and the mass degeneracy of neutrinos. A nearly bi-maximal flavor mixing pattern, which is favored by current data on atmospheric and solar neutrino oscillations, emerges naturally from this model after explicit symmetry breaking. The rephasing-invariant strength of CP or T violation can be as large as one percent, leading to significant probability asymmetries between ν_μ\to ν_e and \barν_μ\to \barν_e (or ν_e \to ν_μ) transitions in the long-baseline neutrino experiments.
Flavor physics is about particle mass-degeneracy-deviations (DMD) and mixing and especially about hierarchies of those deviations. On the one hand there is no established theory of particle flavor at present; on the other hand there are growing data indications on interesting empirical flavor regularities that are described here by two semi-empirical rules: quadratic DMD-hierarchy and Dirac-Majorana DMD-duality rules. First rule unites neutrino solar-atmospheric hierarchy parameter with charged lepton (CL) and quark mass-ratio hierarchies and simultaneously unites the hierarchies in the mixing…
We searched for a sidereal modulation in the rate of neutrinos observed by the MINOS far detector. The detection of these signals could be a signature of neutrino-antineutrino mixing due to Lorentz and CPT violation as described by the Standard-Model Extension framework. We found no evidence for these sidereal signals and we placed limits on the coefficients in this theory describing the effect.
The current status of the phenomenology of short-baseline neutrino oscillations induced by light sterile neutrinos in the framework of 3+1 mixing is reviewed.
We discuss the neutrino oscillations, using texture zero mass matrices for the leptons, including radiative correction. The neutrino mixing angle theta_13 is calculated and agrees with the result of the new Daya Bay experiment.
In analogy to the mixing pattern of the pseudoscalar mesons in QCD we discuss the mixing of massive neutrinos. Unlike the quarks flavor mixing angles the leptonic mixing angles are large, nearly maximal. The three massive neutrinos are nearly degenerate.
We discuss the special class of models where nearly maximal neutrino mixing is produced through the see-saw mechanism, starting from only nearly diagonal matrices for charged leptons, Dirac neutrinos and Majorana right-handed neutrinos.
In a model with four neutrino mass eigenstates grouping in two narrow doublets the condition of maximal mixing of the doublet neutrino components leads to a simple four-neutrino mixing matrix which is related to two connected effective two-neutrino mixing patterns. As a result, large values of the neutrino oscillation amplitudes for both the solar and atmospheric neutrino anomalies appear quite naturally if the LSND data are accepted.
This brief report is an extension of a prediction of neutrino oscillation with a sterile neutrino using parameters of the sterile neutrino mass and mixing angle recently extracted from experiment.
We explore the possibility of generating a non-zero $U_{e3}$ element of the neutrino mixing matrix from tribimaximal neutrino mixing by adding a light sterile neutrino to the active neutrinos. Small active-sterile mixing can provide the necessary deviation from tribimaximal mixing to generate a non-zero $θ_{13}$ and atmospheric mixing $θ_{23}$ different from maximal. Assuming no CP-violation, we study the phenomenological impact of sterile neutrinos in the context of current neutrino oscillation data. The tribimaximal pattern is broken in such a manner that the second column of tribimaximal mi…
We discuss the neutrino mixing, using the texture 0 mass matrices, which work very well for the quarks. The solar mixing angle is directly linked to the mass ratio of the first two neutrinos. The neutrino masses are hierarchical, but the mass ratios turn out to be much smaller than for quarks. The atmospheric mixing angle is 38$^{\circ}$. The CP violation for leptons should be much smaller than for quarks.
Astrophysical implications of neutrino mass and mixings are discussed. The status of solar and atmospheric neutrino problems, and recent developments concerning nuclear physics input to solar models and solar opacities are reviewed. Implications of neutrino mass and mixings in supernova dynamics are explored. The effects of supernova density fluctuations in neutrino propagation is described.
We review the consequences of neutrino mixing in the early universe. For both active-sterile mixing or mixing between three active neutrinos only, the consequences of oscillations depend crucially upon the size of the universe's lepton number (relic neutrino asymmetry.)
Charged lepton mixing as a consequence of neutrino mixing is studied for two generations $e,μ$ in the temperature regime $m_μ\ll T \ll M_W$ in the early Universe. We state the general criteria for charged lepton mixing, critically reexamine aspects of neutrino equilibration and provide arguments to suggest that neutrinos may equilibrate as mass eigenstates in the temperature regime \emph{prior} to flavor equalization. We assume this to be the case, and that neutrino mass eigenstates are in equilibrium with different chemical potentials. Charged lepton self-energies are obtained to leading orde…
In the framework of the three-neutrino mixing the neutrino oscillations in the atmospheric and solar ranges of neutrino mass-squared differences are considered in the leading approximation. Neutrinoless double $β$- decay is also discussed.
We derive the constraints imposed on neutrino masses and mixing angles by performing a combined analysis of the data from the Los Alamos and the other terrestrial neutrino oscillation experiments with the assumption of the flavor-mixing solutions to the solar neutrino problem. In a three-flavor mixing scheme which ignores the possibility of sterile neutrinos, we obtain severe constraints on the pattern of masses and flavor mixing of neutrinos. For example, we show that in the standard Kobayashi-Maskawa type mixing matrix $s_{13}^2 \lsim 10^{-2}$ independent of the choice of the solar neutrino …
The compelling experimental evidences for oscillations of solar, atmospheric and reactor neutrinos imply the existence of 3-neutrino mixing in vacuum. We review the phenomenology of 3-neutrino mixing, and the current data on the 3-neutrino mixing parameters. The opened questions and the main goals of future research in the field of neutrino mixing and oscillations are outlined. A phenomenological approach for understanding the pattern of neutrino mixing as an interplay between the mixing, arising from the charged lepton sector, and bimaximal mixing, arising from a neutrino Majorana mass matrix…
If neutrinos are Dirac, the conditions for cobimaximal mixing, i.e. $θ_{23}=π/4$ and $δ_{CP}=\pm π/2$ in the $3 \times 3$ neutrino mixing matrix, are derived. One example with $A_4$ symmetry and radiative Dirac neutrino masses is presented.
Neutrino mixing and basics of neutrino oscillations are considered. Recent evidences in favour of neutrino oscillations, obtained in the solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments, are discussed. Neutrino oscillations in the solar and atmospheric ranges of $Δm^{2}$ are considered in the framework of the minimal scheme with the mixing of three massive neutrinos.
The status of the problem of neutrino masses and mixing is shortly reviewed. Different schemes of mixing of (Dirac or Majorana) massive neutrinos are considered. The theory of neutrino oscillations in vacuum and in matter is presented. Existing indications in favor of neutrino mixing are shortly discussed.
The 2-neutrino exchange potential (2NEP) is a Standard Model (SM) weak potential due to the exchange of virtual neutrino-antineutrino pairs. Consequently, many aspects of neutrino physics, such as the number of flavors, their masses, fermionic nature (Dirac or Majorana), low-energy neutrino physics and CP-violation, can be examined via the 2NEP. We present a new approach for calculating the 2NEP taking into account the phenomenon of neutrino mixing and CP-violation which arises from the structure of the SM weak interaction Lagrangian. Lastly, we explore implications of our result in various ph…
We discuss what information about the neutrino mass spectrum and the elements of the neutrino mixing matrix can be inferred from the results of neutrino oscillation experiments. The cases of three and four massive neutrinos are considered. It is shown that the general characteristics of the neutrino mixing matrix are quite different from those of the quark mixing matrix.
Exotic explanations are considered for atmospheric neutrino observations. Our analysis includes matter effects and the mixing of all three neutrinos under the simplifying assumption of only one relevant mixing scale. Constraints from accelerator, reactor and solar neutrinos are included. We find that the proposed mixing mechanisms based on violations of Lorentz invariance or on violations of the equivalence principle cannot explain the recent observations of atmospheric neutrino mixing. However the data still allow a wide range of energy dependences for the vacuum mixing scale, and also allow …
We study neutrino masses and mixings based on the simplest SO(10) mass relations and the seesaw mechanism. We find that the requirement of large neutrino mixings determines the relative magnitude of the heavy Majorana neutrino masses in terms of the known quark mass hierarchy. This leads to specific predictions for the structure of the neutrino mixing matrix, the light neutrino masses, CP violation in neutrino oscillations, neutrinoless double b-decay and the baryon asymmetry.
A short review of the status of neutrino mixing and neutrino oscillations is given. The basics of neutrino mixing and oscillations is discussed. The latest evidences of neutrino oscillations obtained in the Super-Kamiokande and the SNO solar neutrino experiments and in the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino experiment are considered. The results of solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments are discussed from the point of view of the three-neutrino mixing.
In the wake of the SuperKamiokande announcement of atmospheric neutrino oscillations which favor the large mixing of $ν_μ$ with $ν_τ$, there is considerable theoretical activity towards a possible understanding of the solar neutrino deficit also in terms of the mixing of $ν_e$ with the other two neutrinos. A specific dynamical model is presented here for the first time which naturally chooses the large (small) mixing solution to atmospheric (solar) neutrino oscillations.
We present an analysis of neutrino oscillations which are consistent with current solar, atmospheric and terrestrial experiments in a framework with three neutrino mixing. The solutions satisfying these experiments have the large mixing (not maximal mixing) between electron neutrino- muon neutrino or muon neutrino-tau neutrino in m3 to be about several eV, where m3 is the heaviest neutrino mass. From these results, we conjecture a form for the mass matrices of charged lepton and neutrino which are described by the universal Yukawa coupling with small violations.
We show that the neutrino mixing pattern with the large mixing required for the atmospheric neutrino problem and the small mixing angle MSW solution for the solar neutrino problem can be naturally generated through radiative magnification, even though all the mixing angles at the seesaw scale may be small. This can account for the neutrino anomalies as well as the CHOOZ constraints in the context of quark-lepton unified theories, where the quark and lepton mixing angles are expected to be similar in magnitude at the high scale. We also indicate the 4$ν$ mixing scenarios for which this mechanis…
In the first part of these lectures the neutrino mixing hypothesis will be considered in detail. We will discuss the possible schemes of neutrino mixing and present the data of the recent experiments searching for effects due to nonvanishing neutrino masses and mixing angles. In the second part of these lectures the physics of solar neutrinos will be considered. We will discuss the MSW resonance solution of the equation of evolution of a neutrino in matter and present data of solar neutrino experiments.
Three schemes of neutrino mixings (oscillations) together with their mixing matrices (analogous to Kabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrices) are considered. In these schemes neutrino transitions are virtual if neutrino masses are different. Two of them belong to the so called mass mixing schemes (mixing parameters are expressed by elements of mass matrices) and the third scheme belongs to the charge mixing scheme (mixing parameters are expressed through charges). In the first scheme system of 6 equations for determination of the all elements of the mass matrix (neutrino masses and transition widths)…
The neutrino mixing matrix is expanded in powers of a small parameter $λ$ in tri-bimaximal mixing pattern. We also present some applications of this parametrization, such as to the expression of the Jarlskog parameter $J$. Comparing with other parametrizations (such as the parametrization in bimaximal mixing pattern), this parametrization converges more quickly, but is of less symmetry.
We propose new mixing schemes for (3+1) neutrinos which describe mixing among active-active and active-sterile neutrinos. The mixing matrix in these mixing schemes can be factored into a zeroth order flavor symmetric part and another part representing small perturbations needed for generating non-zero $U_{e3}$, nonmaximal $θ_{23}$, CP violation and active-sterile mixing. We find interesting correlations amongst various neutrino mixing angles and, also, calculate the parameter space for various parameters.
We study leptonic CKM mixing matrices when the neutrino Yukawa matrices are antisymmetric which gives rise to mass patterns suitable to explain solar, atmospheric and LSND neutrino oscillation experiments. Taking diagonal leptonic matrices which can give rise to hierarchical lepton masses, we compute the leptonic CKM matrix.
In the Standard theory of neutrino oscillations is used scheme of mass mixings, i.e., oscillation parameters are expressed via terms of mass matrix. In this work neutrino oscillations generated by charge (the weak interaction couple constants) mixings are considered. Expressions for angle mixings and lengths of oscillations are obtained. The expressions of the probability for three neutrino oscillations are given. Neutrino oscillations in this scheme (mechanism) are virtual if neutrino masses are not equal and real if neutrino masses are equal.
We review some fundamental aspects of the theory of neutrino masses and mixing. The results of neutrino oscillation experiments are interpreted as evidence of three-neutrino mixing. Implications for the mixing parameters and the neutrino masses are discussed, with emphasis on the connection with the measurements of the absolute values of neutrino masses in beta decay and neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments and cosmological observations.
The neutrino oscillation experiments increasingly point towards a mixing pattern that can be parametrised with two near maximal and one small mixing angle. We investigate whether such a mixing pattern can be generated as a fixed point of renormalisation group evolution.
The evidences in favor of solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillations are briefly reviewed and shown to be gracefully accommodated in the framework of three-neutrino mixing with bilarge mixing.
We consider the explanation of both data of the atmospheric neutrino and the solar neutrino by the neutrino mass matrix derived from the mixing of neutrinos and gauginos in the extended MSSM with an extra U(1) gauge symmetry. This scenario directly relates the neutrino mass to supersymmetry. The structure of the mass hierarchy and the mixing is determined only by the extra U(1)-charge of neutrinos. Although the model is rather simple, it may be able to realize both the small and large mixing angle solutions for the solar neutrino problem. In particular, the large mixing angle MSW solution for …
In the Standard Model (and MSSM), renormalization effects on neutrino mixing are generally very small and the attractive fixed points are at vanishing neutrino mixing. However for multi-higgs extensions of the Standard Model, renormalization effects on neutrino mixing can be large and nontrivial fixed points are possible. Here we examine a simple two-higgs model. For two flavors, maximal mixing is an attractive infrared fixed point. For three flavors, the neutrino mass matrix evolves towards large off-diagonal elements at low energies. The experimentally suggested bimaximal neutrino mixing pat…
The predictions for the effective Majorana mass |<m>| in neutrinoless double-beta decay in the case of 3-neutrino mixing and massive Majorana neutrinos are reviewed. The physics potential of the experiments, searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay and having sensitivity to $|<m>| \gtap 0.01$ eV, for providing information on the type of the neutrino mass spectrum, on the absolute scale of neutrino masses and on the Majorana CP-violation phases in the PMNS neutrino mixing matrix is also discussed.
Non-unitary neutrino mixing in the light neutrino sector is a direct consequence of type-I seesaw neutrino mass models. In these models, light neutrino mixing is described by a sub-matrix of the full lepton mixing matrix and, then, it is not unitary in general. In consequence, neutrino oscillations are characterized by additional parameters, including new sources of CP violation. Here we perform a combined analysis of short and long-baseline neutrino oscillation data in this extended mixing scenario. We did not find a significant deviation from unitary mixing, and the complementary data sets h…
