At finite temperature and chemical potential, the leading-order (hard-thermal-loop) contributions to the gauge-boson propagator lead to momentum-dependent thermal masses for propagating quasiparticles as well as dynamical screening and Landau damping effects. We compare the hard-thermal-loop propagator with the complete large-N_f gluon propagator, for which the usually subleading contributions, such as a finite width of quasiparticles, can be studied at nonperturbatively large effective coupling. We also study quantitatively the effect of Friedel oscillations in low-temperature electrostatic screening.
The Schwinger-Dyson formalism is used to check the consistency of instanton model solutions for the quark propagator with recent models of confining gluon propagators. We find that the models are not consistent. A major discrepancy is the absence of a vector condensate in the instanton model that is present in the solutions with nonperturbative confining gluons.
The quark propagator in presence of an arbitrary gluon field is calculated gauge and Lorentz covariantly order by order in terms of powers of gluon field and its derivatives. The result is independent of path connecting ends of propagator and leading order result coincides with the exact propagator in the trivial case of vanishing gluon field.
The analytic structure of the non-perturbative gluon propagator contains information on the absence of gluons from the physical spectrum of the theory. We study this structure from numerical solutions in the complex momentum plane of the gluon and ghost Dyson-Schwinger equations in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory. The resulting ghost and gluon propagators are analytic apart from a distinct cut structure on the real, timelike momentum axis. The propagator violates the Osterwalder-Schrader positivity condition, confirming the absence of gluons from the asymptotic spectrum of the theory.
The results of different non-perturbative studies agree on a power law as the infrared behavior of the Landau gauge gluon propagator. This propagator violates positivity and thus indicates the absence of the transverse gluons from the physical spectrum, i.e. gluon confinement. A simple analytic structure for the gluon propagator is proposed capturing all of its features. We comment also on related investigations for the Landau gauge quark propagator.
We compute the critical coupling constant for the dynamical chiral-symmetry breaking in a model of quantum chromodynamics, solving numerically the quark self-energy using infrared finite gluon propagators found as solutions of the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the gluon, and one gluon propagator determined in numerical lattice simulations. The gluon mass scale screens the force responsible for the chiral breaking, and the transition occurs only for a larger critical coupling constant than the one obtained with the perturbative propagator. The critical coupling shows a great sensibility to the g…
Enforcing color and electric charge neutrality conditions on the three-flavor color superconducting matter, I derive the explicit form of the quark propagators and the gluon self-energies for the gapless and the ordinary color-flavor-locked phases.
The possible infrared behaviour of the gluon propagator is studied analytically, using the Schwinger-Dyson equations, in both the axial and the Landau gauge. The possibility of a gluon propagator less singular than $1/k^{2}$ when $k^{2} \rightarrow 0$ is investigated and found to be inconsistent, despite claims to the contrary, whereas an infrared enhanced one is consistent. The implications for confinement are discussed.
Considering a QCD chiral symmetry breaking model where the gap equation contains an effective confining propagator and a dressed gluon propagator with a dynamically generated mass, we verify that the chiral symmetry is restored for a large number of quarks $n_{f}\approx 7-13$. We discuss the uncertainty in the results, that is related to the determination of the string tension ($K_{F}$), appearing in the confining propagator, and the effective gluon mass ($m_{g}$) at large $n_{f}$.
We compute the gluon and ghost propagators of Yang-Mills theory in linear covariant gauges from the coupled system of Dyson-Schwinger equations. For small values of the gauge fixing parameter $ξ\sim 0.1$, the deviations to the Landau gauge already become clearly visible. For the ghost dressing function, this is reflected in a logarithmic infrared suppression. Also, the gluon dressing function changes - but only quantitatively - and the gluon propagator remains finite at zero momentum. From the results, a running coupling is extracted.
We exploit the Ward-Slavnov-Taylor identity relating the 3-gluons to the ghost-gluon vertices to conclude either that the ghost dressing function is finite and non vanishing at zero momentum while the gluon propagator diverges (although it may do so weakly enough not to be in contradiction with current lattice data) or that the 3-gluons vertex is non-regular when one momentum goes to zero. We stress that those results should be kept in mind when one studies the Infrared properties of the ghost and gluon propagators, for example by means of Dyson-Schwinger equations.
We have explicitly shown that the infrared structure of the full gluon propagator in QCD is an infite sum over all severe (i.e., more singular than $1/q^2$) infrared singularities. It reflects the zero momentum modes enhancement effect in the true QCD vacuum. Its existence exhibits a characteristic mass (the so-called mass gap), which is responsible for the scale of nonperturbative dynamics in the QCD ground state. By an infrared renormalization of a mass gap only, the deep infrared structure of the full gluon propagator is saturated by the simplest severe infrared singularity, the famous $(q^…
We report on some recent solutions of the Dyson-Schwinger equations for the infrared behavior of the gluon propagator and coupling constant, discussing their differences and proposing that these different behaviors can be tested through hadronic phenomenology. We discuss which kind of phenomenological tests can be applied to the gluon propagator and coupling constant, how sensitive they are to the infrared region of momenta and what specific solution is preferred by the experimental data.
A truncation scheme for the Dyson-Schwinger equations of QCD in Landau gauge is presented which implements the Slavnov-Taylor identities for the 3-point vertex functions. Neglecting contributions from 4-point correlations such as the 4-gluon vertex function and irreducible scattering kernels, a closed system of equations for the propagators is obtained. For the pure gauge theory without quarks this system of equations for the propagators of gluons and ghosts is solved in an approximation which allows for an analytic discussion of its solutions in the infrared: The gluon propagator is shown to …
We consider the constraints of the Slavnov-Taylor identity of the IR behaviour of gluon and ghost propagators and their compatibility with solutions of the ghost Dyson-Schwinger equation and with the lattice picture.
The hard-loop resummed propagator in an anisotropic QCD plasma in general linear gauges are computed. We get the explicit expressions of the gluon propagator in covariant gauge, Coulomb gauge and temporal axial gauge. Considering one gluon exchange, the potential between heavy quarks is defined through the Fourier transform of the static propagator. We find that the potential exhibits angular dependence and that there is stronger attraction on distance scales on the order of the inverse Debye mass for quark pairs aligned along the direction of anisotropy than for transverse alignment.
In this work, we perform a comparison of the employ of distinct gluon propagators with the experimental data in diffractive processes, $pp$ elastic scattering and light meson photo-production. The gluon propagators are calculated through non-perturbative methods, being justified their use in this class of events, due to the smallness of the momentum transfer. Our results are not able to select the best choice for the modified gluon propagator among the analyzed ones, showing that the application of this procedure in this class of high energy processes, although giving a reasonable fit to the e…
In a recent work we described the form taken by the Minkowski-space gluon propagator in the presence of an A^2 condensate. This condensate has been seen to play an important role in calculations which make use of the operator product expansion. The latter work has led to the publication of a large number of papers which discuss how the A^2 condensate could play a role in a gauge-invariant formulation. In the present work we discuss the properties of both the Euclidean-space and Minkowski-space gluon propagator. In the case of the Euclidean-space propagator we can make contact with the results …
An introduction is given into current lattice investigations of the non-perturbative gluon and ghost propagators, in the light of the Gribov-Zwanziger and Kugo-Ojima scenarios of confinement, in the context of results obtained from the non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger approach in the continuum and in connection with the vortex mechanism of confinement.
The ultraviolet asymptotic behavior of the gluon propagator is evaluated in the maximal Abelian gauge in the SU(2) gauge theory on the basis of the renormalization-group improved perturbation theory at the one-loop level. Square-root singularities obtained in the Euclidean domain are attributed to artifacts of the one-loop approximation in the maximal Abelian gauge and the standard normalization condition for the propagator used in our study. It is argued that this gauge is essentially nonperturbative.
Using the effective potential approach for composite operators, we have analytically evaluated the truly nonperturbative vacuum energy density as obtained by using a model infrared finite gluon propagator which was suggested by lattice simulations. The truly nonperturbative vacuum energy density is defined as the truly nonperturbative part of the full gluon propagator integrated over the deep infrared region (soft momentum region). With this definition, it is a manifestly gauge invariant quantity. We have explicitly shown that the corresponding effective potential has always an imaginary part …
We consider the effects of the Faddeev-Popov determinant in the Coulomb gauge on the confinement properties of the QCD vacuum. We show that the the determinant is needed to regularize the otherwise divergent functional integrals near the Gribov horizon but still enables large field configurations to generate IR enhanced running coupling. The physical gluon propagator is found to be strongly suppressed in the IR consistent with expectations from lattice gauge calculations.
We discuss some phenomenological applications of an infrared finite gluon propagator characterized by a dynamically generated gluon mass. In particular we compute the effect of the dynamical gluon mass on $pp$ and ${\bar{p}}p$ diffractive scattering. We also show how the data on $γp$ photoproduction and hadronic $γγ$ reactions can be derived from the $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ forward scattering amplitudes by assuming vector meson dominance and the additive quark model.
We consider the gluon propagator in the Landau gauge at low spacelike momenta and with the dressing function $Z(Q^2)$ at the two-loop order. We incorporate the nonperturbative effects by making the (noninteger) powers of the QCD coupling in the dressing function $Z(Q^2)$ analytic (holomorphic) via the Fractional Analytic Perturbation Theory (FAPT) model, and simultaneously introducing the gluon dynamical mass in the propagator as motivated by the previous analyses of the Dyson-Schwinger equations. The obtained propagator has behavior compatible with the unquenched lattice data ($N_f=2+1$) at l…
Gluon propagator in the infrared limit, computed in the Landau gauge, can be cast into an universal form with a running mass for the gluon. In this way we are able to show that all the proposals appeared so far in literature are equivalent and describe the same physics. In this way, it appears essential to reach a general agreement about the interpretation of such results. We discuss the points that make difficult to agree on a similar view about this.
We present the results of two high-statistics studies of the gluon propagator in the Landau gauge, at $β=6.0$, on different lattice volumes. The dependence of the propagator on the momenta is well described by the expression $G(k^2) = \Big[ M^2+Z\cdot k^2(k^2/ Λ^2)^η)\Big]^{-1}$. We obtain a precise determination of $η=0.532(12)$, and verify that $M^2$ does not vanish in the infinite volume limit.
Chiral symmetry breaking in QCD is studied introducing a confining effective propagator, as proposed recently by Cornwall, and considering the effect of dynamically massive gluons. The effective confining propagator has the form $1/(k^2+m^2)^2$ and we study the bifurcation equation finding limits on the parameter $m$ below which a satisfactory fermion mass solution is generated. Since the coupling constant and gluon propagator are damped in the infrared, due to the presence of a dynamical gluon mass, the major part of the chiral breaking is only due to the confining propagator and related to t…
We carefully compute the gluon propagator in the background of a non--Abelian Weizsäcker--Williams field. This background field is generated by the valence quarks in very large nuclei. We find contact terms in the small fluctuation equations of motion which induce corrections to a previously incorrect result for the gluon propagator in such a background field. The well known problem of the Hermiticity of certain operators in Light Cone gauge is resolved for the Weizsäcker--Williams background field. This is achieved by working in a gauge where singular terms in the equations of motion are abse…
It is shown that the solution of the quark Dyson-Schwinger equation in QCD obtained with a gluon propagator of the form $D(q) \sim q^2/[q^4+b^4]$ and a quark-gluon vertex that is free of kinematic singularities does not describe a confined particle and that there is always a value of $b^2 = b^2_c$ such that chiral symmetry is not dynamically broken for $b^2>b_c^2$.
The thermal self-energy of gluons generally depends on four Lorentz-invariant functions. Only two of these occur in the hard thermal loop approximation of Braaten and Pisarski because of the abelian Ward identity $K_μΠ^{μν}_{\rm htl}=0$. However, for the exact self-energy $K_μΠ^{μν}\neq 0$. In linear gauges the Slavnov-Taylor identity is shown to require a non-linear relation among three of the Lorentz-invariant self-energy function: $(Π_{C})^{2}=(K^{2}-Π_{L})Π_{D}$. This reduces the exact gluon propagator to a simple form containing only two types of poles: one that determines the behavior of…
The meson (pion and kaon) form factor is calculated in the perturbative framework with alternative forms for the running coupling constant and the gluon propagator in the infrared kinematic region. These modified forms are employed to test the sensibility of the meson form factor to the nonperturbative contributions. Its is a powerful discriminating quantity and the results obtained with a particular choice of modified running coupling constant and gluon propagator have a good agreement with the available data, for both mesons, indicating the robustness of the method of calculation. Neverthele…
The Dyson-Schwinger equation for the quark self energy is solved in rainbow approximation using an infrared (IR) vanishing gluon propagator that introduces an IR mass scale $b$. There exists a $b$ dependent critical coupling indicating the spontaneous breakdown of chiral symmetry. If one chooses realistic QCD coupling constants the strength and the scale of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking decouple from the IR scale for small $b$ while for large $b$ no dynamical chiral symmetry breaking occurs. At timelike momenta the quark propagator possesses a pole, at least for a large range of the par…
We calculate the Coulomb gauge temporal quark and gluon propagators in quenched QCD. From the temporal quark and gluon propagators, dispersion relations and quasiparticle masses are determined by means of the Maximum Entropy Method.
Either by solving the ghost propagator DSE or through a one-loop computation in the RGZ (Refined Gribov-Zwanziger) formalism, we show that a non-trivial ghost-gluon vertex is anyhow required to obtain a ghost propagator prediction compatible with the available corresponding lattice data in the SU(3) case. For the necessary gluon propagator input, we present RGZ tree level fits which account well for the gluon lattice data. Interestingly, this propagator can be rewritten in terms of a running gluon mass. A comparison of both DSE and RGZ results for the ghost propagator is furthermore provided. …
We address the interpretation of the Landau gauge gluon propagator at finite temperature as a massive type bosonic propagator. Using pure gauge SU(3) lattice simulations at a fixed lattice volume $\sim(6.5fm)^3$, we compute the electric and magnetic form factors, extract a gluon mass from Yukawa-like fits, and study its temperature dependence. This is relevant both for the Debye screening at high temperature $T$ and for confinement at low $T$.
The gluon propagator plays a central role in determining the dynamics of QCD. In this work we demonstrate for BRST quantised QCD that the Dyson-Schwinger equation imposes significant analytic constraints on the structure of this propagator. In particular, we find that these constraints control the appearance of massless components in the gluon spectral density.
We explore the analytic structure of the gluon and quark propagators of Landau gauge QCD from numerical solutions of the coupled system of renormalized Dyson--Schwinger equations and from fits to lattice data. We find sizable negative norm contributions in the transverse gluon propagator indicating the absence of the transverse gluon from the physical spectrum. A simple analytic structure for the gluon propagator is proposed. For the quark propagator we find evidence for a mass-like singularity on the real timelike momentum axis, with a mass of 350 to 500 MeV. Within the employed Green's funct…
We revisit our recently proposed formalism for dealing with the heavy quark limit of the quark Dyson-Schwinger equation. An ambiguity inherent in the original version of method is identified and resolved. Our reanalysis illustrates the importance of correctly accounting for the effect of hard gluon momenta on the heavy quark self energy in the vicinity of the bare fermion mass pole.
We calculate the transverse and the time-time components of the Coulomb-gauge gluon propagator in SU(3) lattice Yang-Mills theory both on isotropic and anisotropic lattices. The problem of scaling violation observed on the isotropic lattice is drastically reduced as the anisotropy increases; namely, the system approaches the Hamiltonian limit. In the infrared region, the transverse gluon propagator exhibits a turnover and the temporal gluon propagator shows divergent behavior.
We address several aspects of gluon propagation at zero and finite temperature. In particular, we study the violation of spectral positivity, we discuss a method to extract the Källén-Lehmann spectral density of a particle (be it elementary or bound state) propagator and apply it to compute gluon spectral densities from lattice data. Furthermore, we also consider the interpretation of the Landau gauge gluon propagator at finite temperature as a massive type bosonic propagator.
We report preliminary results of our ongoing lattice computation of the Landau gauge quark propagator and the soft gluon limit of the quark-gluon vertex with 2 flavors of dynamical O(a) improved Wilson fermions.
Using lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) we perform an unquenched calculation of the gluon propagator in Landau gauge. We use configurations generated with the AsqTad quark action by the MILC collaboration for the dynamical quarks and compare the gluon propagator of quenched QCD (i.e., the pure Yang-Mills gluon propagator) with that of 2+1 flavor QCD. The effects of the dynamical quarks are clearly visible and lead to a significant reduction of the nonperturbative infrared enhancement relative to the quenched case.
Perturbative QCD calculations in the light-cone gauge have long suffered from the ambiguity associated with the regularization of the poles in the gluon propagator. In this work we study sub-gauge conditions within the light-cone gauge corresponding to several known ways of regulating the gluon propagator. Using the functional integral calculation of the gluon propagator, we rederive the known sub-gauge conditions for the theta-function gauges and identify the sub-gauge condition for the principal value (PV) regularization of the gluon propagator's light-cone poles. The obtained sub-gauge cond…
We report on the lattice computation of the Landau gauge gluon propagator at finite temperature, including the non-zero Matsubara frequencies. Moreover, the corresponding Källén-Lehmann spectral density is computed, using a Tikhonov regularisation together with the Morozov discrepancy principle. Implications for gluon confinement are also discussed.
Contribution of the quark back reaction to the deconfinement phase transition is studied in the thermodynamical potential of the gluonic sector which consists of the gluon and ghost propagators calculated in the lattice QCD simulations. Starting from QCD thermodynamic potential, we define the gluonic potential in the leading-order of the 2PI formalism, which can describe the deconfinement phase transition. Then the gluonic potential can be written by using the microscopic characters; the gluon and ghost propagators in Landau gauge fixing. To include effects of the quark back reaction, we calcu…
We study a manifestly gauge invariant set of Schwinger-Dyson equations to determine the nonperturbative dynamics of the gluon and ghost propagators in $d=3$ Yang-Mills. The use of the well-known Schwinger mechanism, in the Landau gauge, leads to the dynamical generation of a mass for the gauge boson (gluon in $d=3$), which, in turn, gives rise to an infrared finite gluon propagator and ghost dressing function. The propagators obtained from the numerical solution of these nonperturbative equations are in very good agreement with the results of $SU(2)$ lattice simulations.
The interquark static potential for heavy mesons described by a massive One Gluon Exchange interaction obtained from the propagator of the truncated Dyson-Schwinger equations does not reproduced the expected Cornell potential. I show that no formulation based on a finite propagator will lead to confinement of quenched QCD. I propose a mechanism based on a singular nonperturbative coupling constant which has the virtue of giving rise to a finite gluon propagator and (almost) linear confinement. The mechanism can be slightly modified to produce the screened potentials of unquenched QCD.
We study the gluon propagator in the Landau gauge in SU(3) lattice QCD at $β$=5.7, 5.8 and 6.0 at the quenched level. The Euclidean Landau-gauge gluon propagator $D(r)\equiv D_{μμ}^{aa}(x)/24$ is found to be well described by four-dimensional Yukawa-type function $e^{-mr}/r$ in the infrared and intermediate region of $r \equiv (x_μx_μ)^{1/2}$ = 0.1 $\sim$ 1.0fm. The infrared effective gluon mass is obtained as $m \simeq$ 600MeV. Associated with the 4D Yukawa-type gluon propagator, we derive analytical expressions for the zero-spatial-momentum propagator $D_0(t)$, the effective mass $M_{\rm eff…
Correlation functions of Landau gauge Yang-Mills theory are calculated from their equations of motion. Solutions for the three- and four-gluon vertices and the role of two-loop diagrams in the gluon propagator equation are discussed.
We consider the potential-model approach for obtaining the spectrum of charmonium and bottomonium, replacing the usual gluon propagator by one obtained from lattice simulations. The resulting spectra are compared to the corresponding ones in the Cornell-potential case. We also estimate the interquark distance in both cases.
We study gluon propagator in Landau gauge with lattice QCD, where we use an improved lattice action. The calculation of gluon propagator is performed on lattices with the lattice spacing from 0.40 fm to 0.24 fm and with the lattice volume from $(2.40 fm)^4$ to $(4.0 fm)^4$. We try to fit our results by two different ways, in the first one we interpret the calculated gluon propagators as a function of the continuum momentum, while in the second we interpret the propagators as a function of the lattice momentum. In the both we use models which are the same in continuum limit. A qualitative agree…
We study electric and magnetic components of the gluon propagators in quark-gluon plasma in terms of center vortices by using a quenched simulation of SU(2) lattice theory. In the Landau gauge, the magnetic components of the propagators are strongly affected in the infrared region by removal of the center vortices, while the electric components are almost unchanged by this procedure. In the Coulomb gauge, the time-time correlators, including an instantaneous interaction, also have an essential contribution from the center vortices. As a result, one finds that magnetic degrees of freedom in the…
We calculate an one loop QCD Regge Field Theory (RFT) correction to the propagator of reggeized gluons basing on the QCD effective action of Lipatov, \cite{LipatovEff,LipatovEff1,Our1,Our2,Our3,Our4}, and results of \cite{Our5} where Dyson-Schwinger hierarchy of the equations for the correlators of reggeized gluon fields was derived. The correction is calculated entirely in the framework of RFT with the use of the obtained expressions for the RFT bare triple Reggeon vertices and propagator of reggeized gluons, the cases of bare propagator and propagator calculated to one-loop precision are con…
We study the dominant non-perturbative power corrections to the ghost and gluon propagators in Landau gauge pure Yang-Mills theory using OPE and lattice simulations. The leading order Wilson coefficients are proven to be the same for both propagators. The ratio of the ghost and gluon propagators is thus free from this dominant power correction. Indeed, a purely perturbative fit of this ratio gives smaller value ($\simeq 270$MeV) of $Λ_{\ms}$ than the one obtained from the propagators separately($\simeq 320$MeV). This argues in favour of significant non-perturbative $\sim 1/q^2$ power correctio…
The infrared limit of the lattice Landau gauge gluon propagator is studied. We show that the lattice data is compatible with the pure power law $(q^2)^{2 κ}$ solution of the Dyson-Schwinger equations. Using various lattice volumes, the infinite volume limit for the exponent $κ$ is measured. Although, the results allow $κ= 0.498 - 0.525$, the lattice data favours $κ\sim 0.52$, which would imply a vanishing zero momentum gluon propagator.
We compute the two loop corrections to the gluon propagator for low momentum in a gluon mass model. This model has recently been proposed as an alternative to the Gribov construction in the way it handles Gribov copies in the gauge fixing. The corrections provide improvements for estimating the point where the gluon propagator freezes in relation to lattice data.
We report robust calculations of various low energy QCD hadronic properties. We use a multi-rank separable expansion for the gluon propagator which greatly facilitates the numerical computations within the Global Colour Model for QCD. The parameters for the propagators are determined by fitting experimental values for $f_π$ and the $π$ and $a_1$ meson masses.
The compatibility of the pure power law infrared solution of QCD and lattice data for the gluon and ghost propagators in Landau gauge is discussed. For the gluon propagator, the lattice data is well described by a pure power law with an infrared exponent $κ\sim 0.53$, in the Dyson-Schwinger notation. $κ$ is measured using a technique that suppresses finite volume effects. This value implies a vanishing zero momentum gluon propagator, in agreement with the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement scenario. For the ghost propagator, the lattice data seem not to follow a pure power law, at least for the rang…
We study the transverse and longitudinal gluon propagators in the Landau-gauge lattice QCD with gauge group $SU(2)$ at nonzero quark chemical potential and zero temperature. We show that both propagators demonstrate substantial dependence on the quark chemical potential. This observation contradicts to earlier findings by other groups.
