We study the problem of computing the rate-distortion function for sources with feed-forward and the capacity for channels with feedback. The formulas (involving directed information) for the optimal rate-distortion function with feed-forward and channel capacity with feedback are multi-letter expressions and cannot be computed easily in general. In this work, we derive conditions under which these can be computed for a large class of sources/channels with memory and distortion/cost measures. Illustrative examples are also provided.
We present a new technique to obtain outer-bounds on the capacity region of networks with ultra low-rate feedback. We establish a connection between the achievable rates in the forward channel and the minimum distortion that can be attained over the feedback channel.
This paper quantifies the fundamental limits of variable-length transmission of a general (possibly analog) source over a memoryless channel with noiseless feedback, under a distortion constraint. We consider excess distortion, average distortion and guaranteed distortion ($d$-semifaithful codes). In contrast to the asymptotic fundamental limit, a general conclusion is that allowing variable-length codes and feedback leads to a sizable improvement in the fundamental delay-distortion tradeoff. In addition, we investigate the minimum energy required to reproduce $k$ source samples with a given f…
In this paper we consider the rate distortion problem of discrete-time, ergodic, and stationary sources with feed forward at the receiver. We derive a sequence of achievable and computable rates that converge to the feed-forward rate distortion. We show that, for ergodic and stationary sources, the rate {align} R_n(D)=\frac{1}{n}\min I(\hat{X}^n\rightarrow X^n){align} is achievable for any $n$, where the minimization is taken over the transition conditioning probability $p(\hat{x}^n|x^n)$ such that $\ex{}{d(X^n,\hat{X}^n)}\leq D$. The limit of $R_n(D)$ exists and is the feed-forward rate disto…
The transmission of a Gaussian source over a block-fading multiple antenna channel in the presence of a feedback link is considered. The feedback link is assumed to be an error and delay free link of capacity 1 bit per channel use. Under the short-term power constraint, the optimal exponential behavior of the end-to-end average distortion is characterized for all source-channel bandwidth ratios. It is shown that the optimal transmission strategy is successive refinement source coding followed by progressive transmission over the channel, in which the channel block is allocated dynamically amon…
We consider the problem of estimating channel fading coefficients (modeled as a correlated Gaussian vector) via Downlink (DL) training and Uplink (UL) feedback in wideband FDD massive MIMO systems. Using rate-distortion theory, we derive optimal bounds on the achievable channel state estimation error in terms of the number of training pilots in DL ($β_{tr}$) and feedback dimension in UL ($β_{fb}$), with random, spatially isotropic pilots. It is shown that when the number of training pilots exceeds the channel covariance rank ($r$), the optimal rate-distortion feedback strategy achieves an esti…
We introduce a new distortion measure for point processes called functional-covering distortion. It is inspired by intensity theory and is related to both the covering of point processes and logarithmic loss distortion. We obtain the distortion-rate function with feedforward under this distortion measure for a large class of point processes. For Poisson processes, the rate-distortion function is obtained under a general condition called constrained functional-covering distortion, of which both covering and functional-covering are special cases. Also for Poisson processes, we characterize the r…
This work focuses on the minimum transmission energy required for communicating a pair of correlated Gaussian sources over a two-user Gaussian broadcast channel with noiseless and causal channel output feedback (GBCF). We study the fundamental limit on the required transmission energy for broadcasting a pair of source samples, such that each source can be reconstructed at its respective receiver to within a target distortion, when the source-channel bandwidth ratio is not restricted. We derive a lower bound and three distinct upper bounds on the minimum required energy. For the upper bounds we…

We study the problem of providing channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter in multi-user massive MIMO systems operating in frequency division duplexing (FDD). The wideband MIMO channel is a vector-valued random process correlated in time, space (antennas), and frequency (subcarriers). The base station (BS) broadcasts periodically beta_tr pilot symbols from its M antenna ports to K single-antenna users (UEs). Correspondingly, the K UEs send feedback messages about their channel state using beta_fb symbols in the uplink (UL). Using results from remote rate-distortion theory, we show th…
It is well known that independent (separate) encoding of K correlated sources may incur some rate loss compared to joint encoding, even if the decoding is done jointly. This loss is particularly evident in the multiple descriptions problem, where the sources are repetitions of the same source, but each description must be individually good. We observe that under mild conditions about the source and distortion measure, the rate ratio Rindependent(K)/Rjoint goes to one in the limit of small rate/high distortion. Moreover, we consider the excess rate with respect to the rate-distortion function, …
It is known that modeling an information source via a symbolic dynamical system evolving over the unit interval, leads to a natural lossless compression scheme attaining the entropy rate of the source, under general conditions. We extend this notion to the lossy compression regime assuming a feedforward link is available, by modeling a source via a two-dimensional symbolic dynamical system where one component corresponds to the compressed signal, and the other essentially corresponds to the feedforward signal. For memoryless sources and an arbitrary bounded distortion measure, we show this app…
Efficient low-delay video encoders are of fundamental importance to provide timely feedback in remotely controlled platforms such as drones. In order to fully understand the theoretical limits of low-delay video encoders, we consider an ideal differential predictive coded modulation (DPCM) encoder and provide the explicit derivation of the sum-rate-distortion region for a generic number of successive correlated Gauss-Markov sources along the line of the work by Ma and Ishwar. Furthermore, we provide an upper bound on the minimum distortion achievable in case an arbitrary number of sources are …
A two-terminal interactive function computation problem with alternating messages is studied within the framework of distributed block source coding theory. For any finite number of messages, a single-letter characterization of the sum-rate-distortion function was established in previous works using standard information-theoretic techniques. This, however, does not provide a satisfactory characterization of the infinite-message limit, which is a new, unexplored dimension for asymptotic-analysis in distributed block source coding involving potentially an infinite number of infinitesimal-rate me…
A memoryless state-dependent multiple-access channel (MAC) is considered, where two transmitters wish to convey their messages to a single receiver while simultaneously sensing (estimating) the respective states via generalized feedbacks. For this channel, an improved inner bound is provided on the fundamental rate-distortions tradeoff which characterizes the communication rates the transmitters can achieve while simultaneously ensuring that their state-estimates satisfy desired distortion criteria. The new inner bound is based on a scheme where each transmitter codes over the generalized feed…
Sampling above the Nyquist rate is at the heart of sigma-delta modulation, where the increase in sampling rate is translated to a reduction in the overall (mean-squared-error) reconstruction distortion. This is attained by using a feedback filter at the encoder, in conjunction with a low-pass filter at the decoder. The goal of this work is to characterize the optimal trade-off between the per-sample quantization rate and the resulting mean-squared-error distortion, under various restrictions on the feedback filter. To this end, we establish a duality relation between the performance of sigma-d…
We consider the problem of designing low latency and low complexity schemes for channel state feedback over the MIMO-MAC (multiple-input multiple-output multiple access channel). We develop a framework for analyzing this problem in terms of minimizing the MSE distortion, and come up with separated source-channel schemes and joint source-channel schemes that perform better than analog feedback. We also develop a strikingly simple code design based on scalar quantization and uncoded QAM modulation that achieves the theoretical asymptotic performance limit of the separated approach with very low …
In this paper, we consider a general multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system with channel state information (CSI) feedback over time-correlated Rayleigh block-fading channels. Specifically, we first derive the closed-form expression of the minimum differential feedback rate to achieve the maximum erdodic capacity in the presence of channel estimation errors and quantization distortion at the receiver. With the feedback-channel transmission rate constraint, in the periodic feedback system, we further investigate the relationship of the ergodic capacity and the differential feedback interva…
We improve the existing achievable rate regions for causal and for zero-delay source coding of stationary Gaussian sources under an average mean squared error (MSE) distortion measure. To begin with, we find a closed-form expression for the information-theoretic causal rate-distortion function (RDF) under such distortion measure, denoted by $R_{c}^{it}(D)$, for first-order Gauss-Markov processes. Rc^{it}(D) is a lower bound to the optimal performance theoretically attainable (OPTA) by any causal source code, namely Rc^{op}(D). We show that, for Gaussian sources, the latter can also be upper bo…
We consider transmission of discrete memoryless sources (DMSes) across discrete memoryless channels (DMCs) using variable-length lossy source-channel codes with feedback. The reliability function (optimum error exponent) is shown to be equal to $\max\{0, B(1-R(D)/C)\},$ where $R(D)$ is the rate-distortion function of the source, $B$ is the maximum relative entropy between output distributions of the DMC, and $C$ is the Shannon capacity of the channel. We show that, in this setting and in this asymptotic regime, separate source-channel coding is, in fact, optimal.
We deal with zero-delay source coding of a vector Gaussian autoregressive (AR) source subject to an average mean squared error (MSE) fidelity criterion. Toward this end, we consider the nonanticipative rate distortion function (NRDF) which is a lower bound to the causal and zero-delay rate distortion function (RDF). We use the realization scheme with feedback proposed in [1] to model the corresponding optimal "test-channel" of the NRDF, when considering vector Gaussian AR(1) sources subject to an average MSE distortion. We give conditions on the vector Gaussian AR(1) source to ensure asymptoti…
We study the effects of introducing a feedback channel in the two-receiver erasure source-broadcast problem in which a binary equiprobable source is to be sent over an erasure broadcast channel to two receivers subject to erasure distortion constraints. The receivers each require a certain fraction of a source sequence, and we are interested in the minimum latency, or transmission time, required to serve them all. We first show that for a two-user broadcast channel, a point-to-point outer bound can always be achieved. We further show that the point-to-point outer bound can also be achieved if …
The problem of optimal real-time transmission of a Markov source under constraints on the expected number of transmissions is considered, both for the discounted and long term average cases. This setup is motivated by applications where transmission is sporadic and the cost of switching on the radio and transmitting is significantly more important than the size of the transmitted data packet. For this model, we characterize the distortion-transmission function, i.e., the minimum expected distortion that can be achieved when the expected number of transmissions is less than or equal to a partic…
Limited feedback is a paradigm for the feedback of channel state information in wireless systems. In multiple antenna wireless systems, limited feedback usually entails quantizing a source that lives on the Grassmann manifold. Most work on limited feedback beamforming considered single-shot quantization. In wireless systems, however, the channel is temporally correlated, which can be used to reduce feedback requirements. Unfortunately, conventional predictive quantization does not incorporate the non-Euclidean structure of the Grassmann manifold. In this paper, we propose a Grassmannian predic…
We consider the optimal design of sequential transmission over broadcast channel with nested feedback. Nested feedback means that the channel output of the outer channel is also available at the decoder of the inner channel. We model the communication system as a decentralized team with three decision makers---the encoder and the two decoders. Structure of encoding and decoding strategies that minimize a total distortion measure over a finite horizon are determined. The results are applicable for real-time communication as well as for the information theoretic setup.
As being one of the main representation formats of 3D real world and well-suited for virtual reality and augmented reality applications, point clouds have gained a lot of popularity. In order to reduce the huge amount of data, a considerable amount of research on point cloud compression has been done. However, given a target bit rate, how to properly choose the color and geometry quantization parameters for compressing point clouds is still an open issue. In this paper, we propose a rate-distortion model based quantization parameter selection scheme for bit rate constrained point cloud compres…

Moreover, using the Information Bottleneck principle, we develop a constrained optimization problem that can be used in the training process of a deep neural network. Furthermore, we de…
