Signature coding for multiple access OR channel is considered. We prove that in block asynchronous case the upper bound on the minimum code length asymptotically is the same as in the case of synchronous access.
In practical asynchronous bi-directional relaying, symbols transmitted by two source nodes cannot arrive at the relay with perfect symbol alignment and the symbol-asynchronous multiple-access channel (MAC) should be seriously considered. Recently, Lu et al. proposed a Tanner-graph representation of symbol-asynchronous MAC with rectangular-pulse shaping and further developed the message-passing algorithm for optimal decoding of the asynchronous physical-layer network coding. In this paper, we present a general channel model for the asynchronous multiple-access channel with arbitrary pulse-shapi…
The Slepian-Wolf (SW) coding system is a source coding system with two encoders and a decoder, where these encoders independently encode source sequences from two correlated sources into codewords, and the decoder reconstructs both source sequences from the codewords. In this paper, we consider the situation in which the SW coding system is asynchronous, i.e., each encoder samples a source sequence with some unknown delay. We assume that delays are unknown but maximum and minimum values of possible delays are known to encoders and the decoder. We also assume that sources are discrete stationar…

In this paper, we propose two distributed linear convolutional space-time coding (DLC-STC) schemes for full-duplex (FD) asynchronous cooperative communications. The DLC-STC Scheme 1 is for the case of the complete loop channel cancellation, which achieves the full asynchronous cooperative diversity. The DLC-STC Scheme 2 is for the case of the partial loop channel cancellation and amplifying, where some loop signals are used as the self-coding instead of treated as interference to be directly cancelled. We show this scheme can achieve full asynchronous cooperative diversity. We then evaluate th…
In two-way OFDM relay, carrier frequency offsets (CFOs) between relay and terminal nodes introduce severe intercarrier interference (ICI) which degrades the performance of traditional physical-layer network coding (PLNC). Moreover, traditional algorithm to compute the posteriori probability in the presence of ICI would incur prohibitive computational complexity at the relay node. In this paper, we proposed a two-step asynchronous PLNC scheme at the relay to mitigate the effect of CFOs. In the first step, we intend to reconstruct the ICI component, in which space-alternating generalized expecta…
This paper investigates the decoding process of asynchronous convolutional-coded physical-layer network coding (PNC) systems. Specifically, we put forth a layered decoding framework for convolutional-coded PNC consisting of three layers: symbol realignment layer, codeword realignment layer, and joint channel-decoding network coding (Jt-CNC) decoding layer. Our framework can deal with phase asynchrony and symbol arrival-time asynchrony between the signals simultaneously transmitted by multiple sources. A salient feature of this framework is that it can handle both fractional and integral symbol…
In this paper, a two-relay full-duplex asynchronous cooperative network with the amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol is considered. We propose two distributed space-time coding schemes for the cases with and without cross-talks, respectively. In the first case, each relay can receive the signal sent by the other through the cross-talk link. We first study the feasibility of cross-talk cancellation in this network and show that the cross-talk interference cannot be removed well. For this reason, we design space-time codes by utilizing the cross-talk signals instead of removing them. In the other …
In a single hop broadcast packet erasure network, we demonstrate that it is possible to provide multirate packet delivery outside of what is given by the network min-cut. This is achieved by using a deterministic non-block-based network coding scheme, which allows us to sidestep some of the limitations put in place by the block coding model used to determine the network capacity. Under the network coding scheme we outline, the sender is able to transmit network coded packets above the channel rate of some receivers, while ensuring that they still experience nonzero delivery rates. Interestingl…
Communication in the presence of bounded timing asynchronism which is known to the receiver but cannot be easily compensated is studied. Examples of such situations include point-to-point communication over inter-symbol interference (ISI) channels and asynchronous wireless networks. In these scenarios, although the receiver may know all the delays, it is often not be an easy task for the receiver to compensate the delays as the signals are mixed together. A novel framework called interleave/deinterleave transform (IDT) is proposed to deal with this problem. It is shown that the IDT allows one …
We consider the problem of (almost) lossless source coding of two correlated memoryless sources using separate encoders and a joint decoder, that is, Slepian-Wolf (S-W) coding. In our setting, the encoding and decoding are asynchronous, i.e., there is a certain relative delay between the two sources. Neither the source parameters nor the relative delay are known to the encoders and the decoder. Since we assume that both encoders implement standard random binning, which does not require such knowledge anyway, the focus of this work is on the decoder. Our main contribution is in proposing a univ…
We study the transmission of a set of correlated sources $(U_1,\cdots,U_K)$ over a Gaussian multiple access relay channel with time asynchronism between the encoders. We assume that the maximum possible offset ${\mathsf{d_{max}}}(n)$ between the transmitters grows without bound as the block length $n \rightarrow \infty$ while the relative ratio ${\mathsf{d_{max}}(n) / n}$ of the maximum possible offset to the block length asymptotically vanishes. For such a joint source-channel coding problem, and under specific gain conditions, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for reliable commun…
Recently Li and Xia have proposed a transmission scheme for wireless relay networks based on the Alamouti space time code and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing to combat the effect of timing errors at the relay nodes. This transmission scheme is amazingly simple and achieves a diversity order of two for any number of relays. Motivated by its simplicity, this scheme is extended to a more general transmission scheme that can achieve full cooperative diversity for any number of relays. The conditions on the distributed space time block code (DSTBC) structure that admit its application in…
In asynchronous physical-layer network coding (APNC) systems, the symbols from multiple transmitters to a common receiver may be misaligned. The knowledge of the amount of symbol misalignment, hence its estimation, is important to PNC decoding. This paper addresses the problem of symbol-misalignment estimation and the problem of optimal PNC decoding given the misalignment estimate, assuming the APNC system uses the root-raised-cosine pulse to carry signals (RRC-APNC). First, we put forth an optimal symbol-misalignment estimator that makes use of double baud-rate samples. Then, we devise optima…
A zero-error coding scheme of asymptotic rate $ \log_2 (1+\sqrt{5}) - 1 $ was recently described for a communication channel composed of parallel asynchronous lines satisfying the so-called no switch assumption. We prove that this is in fact the highest rate attainable, i.e., the zero-error capacity of this channel.
A key issue in physical-layer network coding (PNC) is how to deal with the asynchrony between signals transmitted by multiple transmitters. That is, symbols transmitted by different transmitters could arrive at the receiver with symbol misalignment as well as relative carrier-phase offset. In this paper, 1) we propose and investigate a general framework based on belief propagation (BP) that can effectively deal with symbol and phase asynchronies; 2) we show that for BPSK and QPSK modulations, our BP method can significantly reduce the SNR penalty due to asynchrony compared with prior methods; …
A key issue in physical-layer network coding (PNC) is how to deal with the asynchrony between signals transmitted by multiple transmitters. That is, symbols transmitted by different transmitters could arrive at the receiver with symbol misalignment as well as relative carrier-phase offset. A second important issue is how to integrate channel coding with PNC to achieve reliable communication. This paper investigates these two issues and makes the following contributions: 1) We propose and investigate a general framework for decoding at the receiver based on belief propagation (BP). The framewor…
Exponential error bounds achievable by universal coding and decoding are derived for frame-asynchronous discrete memoryless %asynchronous multiple access channels with two senders, via the method of subtypes, a refinement of the method of types. Maximum empirical multi-information decoding is employed. A key tool is an improved packing lemma, that overcomes the technical difficulty caused by codeword repetitions, via an induction based new argument. The asymptotic form of the bounds admits numerical evaluation. This demostrates that error exponents achievable by synchronous transmission (if po…
Several channels with asynchronous side information are introduced. We first consider single-user state-dependent channels with asynchronous side information at the transmitter. It is assumed that the state information sequence is a possibly delayed version of the state sequence, and that the encoder and the decoder are aware of the fact that the state information might be delayed. It is additionally assumed that an upper bound on the delay is known to both encoder and decoder, but other than that, they are ignorant of the actual delay. We consider both the causal and the noncausal cases and p…
In ALOHA-type packetized network, the transmission times of packets follow a stochastic process. In this paper, we advocate a deterministic approach for channel multiple-access. Each user is statically assigned a periodic protocol signal, which takes value either zero or one, and transmit packets whenever the value of the protocol signal is equal to one. On top of this multiple-access protocol, efficient channel coding and network coding schemes are devised. We illustrate the idea by constructing a transmission scheme for the tandem collision network, for both slot-synchronous and slot-asynchr…

Coded distributed computation has become common practice for performing gradient descent on large datasets to mitigate stragglers and other faults. This paper proposes a novel algorithm that encodes the partial derivatives themselves and furthermore optimizes the codes by performing lossy compression on the derivative codewords by maximizing the information contained in the codewords while minimizing the information between the codewords. The utility of this application of coding theory is a geometrical consequence of the observed fact in optimization research that noise is tolerable, sometime…
Sparsely spread code division multiple access (SCDMA) is a non-orthogonal superposition coding scheme that permits a base station simultaneously communicates with multiple users over a common channel. The detection performance of an SCDMA system is mainly determined by its signature matrix, which should be sparse to guarantee large Euclidean distance for the equivalent signal constellation after spreading and superposition. Good signature matrices that perform well under both belief prorogation and the maximum likelihood detections are designed. The proposed design applies to several similar w…
We present an approach to random access that is based on three elements: physical-layer network coding, signature codes and tree splitting. Upon occurrence of a collision, physical-layer network coding enables the receiver to decode the sum of the information that was transmitted by the individual users. For each user this information consists of the data that the user wants to communicate as well as the user's signature. As long as no more than $K$ users collide, their identities can be recovered from the sum of their signatures. A splitting protocol is used to deal with the case that more th…
This paper investigates various subtleties of applying linear physical-layer network coding (PNC) with q-level pulse amplitude modulation (q-PAM) in two-way relay channels (TWRC). A critical issue is how the PNC system performs when the received powers from the two users at the relay are imbalanced. In particular, how would the PNC system perform under slight power imbalance that is inevitable in practice, even when power control is applied? To answer these questions, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of q-PAM PNC. Our contributions are as follows: 1) We give a systematic way to obt…
We present a framework for random access that is based on three elements: physical-layer network coding (PLNC), signature codes and tree splitting. In presence of a collision, physical-layer network coding enables the receiver to decode, i.e. compute, the sum of the packets that were transmitted by the individual users. For each user, the packet consists of the user's signature, as well as the data that the user wants to communicate. As long as no more than K users collide, their identities can be recovered from the sum of their signatures. This framework for creating and transmitting packets …
This article presents a novel transmission scheme for the unsourced, uncoordinated Gaussian multiple access problem. The proposed scheme leverages notions from single-user coding, random spreading, minimum-mean squared error (MMSE) estimation, and successive interference cancellation. Specifically, every message is split into two parts: the first fragment serves as the argument to an injective function that determines which spreading sequence should be employed, whereas the second component of the message is encoded using a polar code. The latter coded bits are then spread using the sequence d…
Access reservation based on slotted ALOHA is commonly used in wireless cellular access. In this paper we investigate its enhancement based on the use of physical-layer network coding and signature coding, whose main feature is enabling simultaneous resolution of up to K users contending for access, where K >= 1. We optimise the slot access probability such that the expected throughput is maximised. In particular, the slot access probability is chosen in line with an estimate of the number of users in the system that is obtained relying on the pseudo-Bayesian approach by Rivest, which we genera…
