Disjunctive Linear Arithmetic (DLA) is a major decidable theory that is supported by almost all existing theorem provers. The theory consists of Boolean combinations of predicates of the form $Σ_{j=1}^{n}a_j\cdot x_j \le b$, where the coefficients $a_j$, the bound $b$ and the variables $x_1 >... x_n$ are of type Real ($\mathbb{R}$). We show a reduction to propositional logic from disjunctive linear arithmetic based on Fourier-Motzkin elimination. While the complexity of this procedure is not better than competing techniques, it has practical advantages in solving verification problems. It also promotes the option of deciding a combination of theories by reducing them to this logic. Results from experiments show that this method has a strong advantage over existing techniques when there are many disjunctions in the formula.

We study query containment in three closely related formalisms: monadic disjunctive Datalog (MDDLog), MMSNP (a logical generalization of constraint satisfaction problems), and ontology-mediated queries (OMQs) based on expressive description logics and unions of conjunctive queries. Containment in MMSNP was known to be decidable due to a result by Feder and Vardi, but its exact complexity has remained open. We prove 2NEXPTIME-completeness and extend this result to monadic disjunctive Datalog and to OMQs.
In this paper, we study an extension of the stable model semantics for disjunctive logic programs where each true atom in a model is associated with an algebraic expression (in terms of rule labels) that represents its justifications. As in our previous work for non-disjunctive programs, these justifications are obtained in a purely semantic way, by algebraic operations (product, addition and application) on a lattice of causal values. Our new definition extends the concept of causal stable model to disjunctive logic programs and satisfies that each (standard) stable model corresponds to a dis…
The logical technique of focusing can be applied to the $λ$-calculus; in a simple type system with atomic types and negative type formers (functions, products, the unit type), its normal forms coincide with $βη$-normal forms. Introducing a saturation phase gives a notion of quasi-normal forms in presence of positive types (sum types and the empty type). This rich structure let us prove the decidability of $βη$-equivalence in presence of the empty type, the fact that it coincides with contextual equivalence, and a finite model property.
We present a new algorithm for determining the satisfiability of conjunctions of non-linear polynomial constraints over the reals, which can be used as a theory solver for satisfiability modulo theory (SMT) solving for non-linear real arithmetic. The algorithm is a variant of Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition (CAD) adapted for satisfiability, where solution candidates (sample points) are constructed incrementally, either until a satisfying sample is found or sufficient samples have been sampled to conclude unsatisfiability. The choice of samples is guided by the input constraints and previou…
We consider the problem of deciding $ω$-regular properties on infinite traces produced by linear loops. Here we think of a given loop as producing a single infinite trace that encodes information about the signs of program variables at each time step. Formally, our main result is a procedure that inputs a prefix-independent $ω$-regular property and a sequence of numbers satisfying a linear recurrence, and determines whether the sign description of the sequence (obtained by replacing each positive entry with "$+$", each negative entry with "$-$", and each zero entry with "$0$") satisfies the gi…
In the last three decades, the $k$-SUM hypothesis has emerged as a satisfying explanation of long-standing time barriers for a variety of algorithmic problems. Yet to this day, the literature knows of only few proven consequences of a refutation of this hypothesis. Taking a descriptive complexity viewpoint, we ask: What is the largest logically defined class of problems \emph{captured} by the $k$-SUM problem? To this end, we introduce a class $\mathsf{FOP}_{\mathbb{Z}}$ of problems corresponding to deciding sentences in Presburger arithmetic/linear integer arithmetic over finite subsets of int…
We study the problem of rewriting an ontology O1 expressed in a DL L1 into an ontology O2 in a Horn DL L2 such that O1 and O2 are equisatisfiable when extended with an arbitrary dataset. Ontologies that admit such rewritings are amenable to reasoning techniques ensuring tractability in data complexity. After showing undecidability whenever L1 extends ALCF, we focus on devising efficiently checkable conditions that ensure existence of a Horn rewriting. By lifting existing techniques for rewriting Disjunctive Datalog programs into plain Datalog to the case of arbitrary first-order programs with …

The idea of representing symbolic knowledge in connectionist systems has been a long-standing endeavour which has attracted much attention recently with the objective of combining machine learning and scalable sound reasoning. Early work has shown a correspondence between propositional logic and symmetrical neural networks which nevertheless did not scale well with the number of variables and whose training regime was inefficient. In this paper, we introduce Logical Boltzmann Machines (LBM), a neurosymbolic system that can represent any propositional logic formula in strict disjunctive normal …
