In this paper we propose an analysis and an upgrade of WordNet's top-level synset taxonomy. We briefly review WordNet and identify its main semantic limitations. Some principles from a forthcoming OntoClean methodology are applied to the ontological analysis of WordNet. A revised top-level taxonomy is proposed, which is meant to be more conceptually rigorous, cognitively transparent, and efficiently exploitable in several applications.
We present a method for constructing taxonomic trees (e.g., WordNet) using pretrained language models. Our approach is composed of two modules, one that predicts parenthood relations and another that reconciles those predictions into trees. The parenthood prediction module produces likelihood scores for each potential parent-child pair, creating a graph of parent-child relation scores. The tree reconciliation module treats the task as a graph optimization problem and outputs the maximum spanning tree of this graph. We train our model on subtrees sampled from WordNet, and test on non-overlappin…
Lexical resources such as WordNet and the EDR electronic dictionary have been used in several NLP tasks. Probably, partly due to the fact that the EDR is not freely available, WordNet has been used far more often than the EDR. We have used both resources on the same task in order to make a comparison possible. The task is automatic assignment of keywords to multi-party dialogue episodes (i.e. thematically coherent stretches of spoken text). We show that the use of lexical resources in such a task results in slightly higher performances than the use of a purely statistically based method.
The technology of automatic document summarization is maturing and may provide a solution to the information overload problem. Nowadays, document summarization plays an important role in information retrieval. With a large volume of documents, presenting the user with a summary of each document greatly facilitates the task of finding the desired documents. Document summarization is a process of automatically creating a compressed version of a given document that provides useful information to users, and multi-document summarization is to produce a summary delivering the majority of information…

Text search based on lexical matching of keywords is not satisfactory due to polysemous and synonymous words. Semantic search that exploits word meanings, in general, improves search performance. In this paper, we survey WordNet-based information retrieval systems, which employ a word sense disambiguation method to process queries and documents. The problem is that in many cases a word has more than one possible direct sense, and picking only one of them may give a wrong sense for the word. Moreover, the previous systems use only word forms to represent word senses and their hypernyms. We prop…
We describe a robust approach for linking already existing lexical/semantic hierarchies. We use a constraint satisfaction algorithm (relaxation labelling) to select --among a set of candidates-- the node in a target taxonomy that bests matches each node in a source taxonomy. In this paper we present the complete mapping of the nominal, verbal, adjectival and adverbial parts of WordNet 1.5 onto WordNet 1.6.

Ontologies, taxonomies, and thesauri are used in many NLP tasks. However, most studies are focused on the creation of these lexical resources rather than the maintenance of the existing ones. Thus, we address the problem of taxonomy enrichment. We explore the possibilities of taxonomy extension in a resource-poor setting and present methods which are applicable to a large number of languages. We create novel English and Russian datasets for training and evaluating taxonomy enrichment models and describe a technique of creating such datasets for other languages.
This paper explores the automatic construction of a multilingual Lexical Knowledge Base from preexisting lexical resources. First, a set of automatic and complementary techniques for linking Spanish words collected from monolingual and bilingual MRDs to English WordNet synsets are described. Second, we show how resulting data provided by each method is then combined to produce a preliminary version of a Spanish WordNet with an accuracy over 85%. The application of these combinations results on an increment of the extracted connexions of a 40% without losing accuracy. Both coarse-grained (class…

WordNet proved that it is possible to construct a large-scale electronic lexical database on the principles of lexical semantics. It has been accepted and used extensively by computational linguists ever since it was released. Inspired by WordNet's success, we propose as an alternative a similar resource, based on the 1987 Penguin edition of Roget's Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases. Peter Mark Roget published his first Thesaurus over 150 years ago. Countless writers, orators and students of the English language have used it. Computational linguists have employed Roget's for almost 50 yea…
Automatic text categorization is a complex and useful task for many natural language processing applications. Recent approaches to text categorization focus more on algorithms than on resources involved in this operation. In contrast to this trend, we present an approach based on the integration of widely available resources as lexical databases and training collections to overcome current limitations of the task. Our approach makes use of WordNet synonymy information to increase evidence for bad trained categories. When testing a direct categorization, a WordNet based one, a training algorith…
This paper explores the automatic construction of a multilingual Lexical Knowledge Base from pre-existing lexical resources. We present a new and robust approach for linking already existing lexical/semantic hierarchies. We used a constraint satisfaction algorithm (relaxation labeling) to select --among all the candidate translations proposed by a bilingual dictionary-- the right English WordNet synset for each sense in a taxonomy automatically derived from a Spanish monolingual dictionary. Although on average, there are 15 possible WordNet connections for each sense in the taxonomy, the metho…
We present a robust approach for linking already existing lexical/semantic hierarchies. We used a constraint satisfaction algorithm (relaxation labeling) to select --among a set of candidates-- the node in a target taxonomy that bests matches each node in a source taxonomy. In particular, we use it to map the nominal part of WordNet 1.5 onto WordNet 1.6, with a very high precision and a very low remaining ambiguity.
This paper describes the Duluth systems that participated in Task 14 of SemEval 2016, Semantic Taxonomy Enrichment. There were three related systems in the formal evaluation which are discussed here, along with numerous post--evaluation runs. All of these systems identified synonyms between WordNet and other dictionaries by measuring the gloss overlaps between them. These systems perform better than the random baseline and one post--evaluation variation was within a respectable margin of the median result attained by all participating systems.

Measuring the distance between concepts is an important field of study of Natural Language Processing, as it can be used to improve tasks related to the interpretation of those same concepts. WordNet, which includes a wide variety of concepts associated with words (i.e., synsets), is often used as a source for computing those distances. In this paper, we explore a distance for WordNet synsets based on visual features, instead of lexical ones. For this purpose, we extract the graphic features generated within a deep convolutional neural networks trained with ImageNet and use those features to g…
We study the problem of automatically building hypernym taxonomies from textual and visual data. Previous works in taxonomy induction generally ignore the increasingly prominent visual data, which encode important perceptual semantics. Instead, we propose a probabilistic model for taxonomy induction by jointly leveraging text and images. To avoid hand-crafted feature engineering, we design end-to-end features based on distributed representations of images and words. The model is discriminatively trained given a small set of existing ontologies and is capable of building full taxonomies from sc…
Synonymy and translational equivalence are the relations of sameness of meaning within and across languages. As the principal relations in wordnets and multi-wordnets, they are vital to computational lexical semantics, yet the field suffers from the absence of a common formal framework to define their properties and relationship. This paper proposes a unifying treatment of these two relations, which is validated by experiments on existing resources. In our view, synonymy and translational equivalence are simply different types of semantic identity. The theory establishes a solid foundation for…

Rapid increase in internet users along with growing power of online review sites and social media has given birth to sentiment analysis or opinion mining, which aims at determining what other people think and comment. Sentiments or Opinions contain public generated content about products, services, policies and politics. People are usually interested to seek positive and negative opinions containing likes and dislikes, shared by users for features of particular product or service. This paper proposed sentence-level lexical based domain independent sentiment classification method for different …

Taxonomies are important building blocks of structured knowledge bases, and their construction from text sources and Wikipedia has received much attention. In this paper we focus on the construction of taxonomies for fictional domains, using noisy category systems from fan wikis or text extraction as input. Such fictional domains are archetypes of entity universes that are poorly covered by Wikipedia, such as also enterprise-specific knowledge bases or highly specialized verticals. Our fiction-targeted approach, called TiFi, consists of three phases: (i) category cleaning, by identifying candi…
SentiWordNet is an important lexical resource supporting sentiment analysis in opinion mining applications. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to construct a Vietnamese SentiWordNet (VSWN). SentiWordNet is typically generated from WordNet in which each synset has numerical scores to indicate its opinion polarities. Many previous studies obtained these scores by applying a machine learning method to WordNet. However, Vietnamese WordNet is not available unfortunately by the time of this paper. Therefore, we propose a method to construct VSWN from a Vietnamese dictionary, not from WordNet…

WordNet lexical-database groups English words into sets of synonyms called "synsets." Synsets are utilized for several applications in the field of text-mining. However, they were also open to criticism because although, in reality, not all the members of a synset represent the meaning of that synset with the same degree, in practice, they are considered as members of the synset, identically. Thus, the fuzzy version of synsets, called fuzzy-synsets (or fuzzy word-sense classes) were proposed and studied. In this study, we discuss why (type-1) fuzzy synsets (T1 F-synsets) do not properly model …
This paper presents a method for the resolution of lexical ambiguity of nouns and its automatic evaluation over the Brown Corpus. The method relies on the use of the wide-coverage noun taxonomy of WordNet and the notion of conceptual distance among concepts, captured by a Conceptual Density formula developed for this purpose. This fully automatic method requires no hand coding of lexical entries, hand tagging of text nor any kind of training process. The results of the experiments have been automatically evaluated against SemCor, the sense-tagged version of the Brown Corpus.
