We study solitons in the condensate trapped in a double-well potential with far-separated wells, when the s-wave scattering length has different signs in the two parts of the condensate. By employing the coupled-mode approximation it is shown that there are unusual stable bright solitons in the condensate, with the larger share of atoms being gathered in the repulsive part. Such unusual solitons derive their stability from the quantum tunneling and correspond to the strong coupling between the parts of the condensate. The ground state of the system, however, corresponds to weak coupling between the condensate parts, with the larger share of atoms being gathered in the attractive part of the condensate.
Both repulsive and attractive molecular interactions can be used to explain the onset of nematic order. The object of this paper is to combine these two nematogenic molecular interactions in a unified theory. This attempt is not unprecedented; what is perhaps new is the focus on the understanding of nematics in the high density limit. There, the orientational probability distribution is shown to exhibit a unique feature: it has compact support on configuration space. As attractive interactions are turned on, the behavior changes, and at a critical attractive interaction strength, thermotropic …
Experiments with polymer latex solutions show the coexistence of order-disorder structures of macroions. Because of the large macroions' sizes, this order-disorder phase coexistence imply the existence of very long-range attractive and repulsive forces, which can not be explained in terms of conventional direct interaction potentials, which are short-range. Here we apply an integral equations theory to a simple model for colloidal dispersions, at finite concentrations, calculate the particles distribution functions and the involved effective forces. We find very long-range attractive and repul…
In mixtures of colloids and nonadsorbing polyelectrolytes, a Donnan potential arises across the region between surfaces that are depleted of polyelectrolyte and the rest of the system. This Donnan potential tends to shift the polyelectrolyte density profile towards the colloidal surface and leads to local accumulation of polyelectrolytes. We derive a zero-field theory for the disjoining pressure between two parallel flat plates. Polyelectrolyte is allowed to enter the confined interplate region at the cost of a conformational free energy penalty. The resulting disjoining pressure shows a cross…
The theory developed in our previous papers is applied in this paper to investigate the dependence of slowing down of dynamics of glass-forming liquids on the attractive and repulsive parts of intermolecular interactions. Through an extensive comparison of the behavior of a Lennard-Jones glass-forming liquid and that of its WCA reduction to a model with truncated pair potential without attractive tail, we demonstrate why the two systems exhibit very different dynamics despite having nearly identical pair correlation functions. In particular, we show that local structures characterized by numbe…

We compare glassy dynamics in two liquids that differ in the form of their interaction potentials. Both systems have the same repulsive interactions but one has also an attractive part in the potential. These two systems exhibit very different dynamics despite having nearly identical pair correlation functions. We demonstrate that a properly weighted integral of the pair correlation function, which amplifies the subtle differences between the two systems, correctly captures their dynamical differences. The weights are obtained from a standard machine learning algorithm.
We compute partial structure factors, Kirkwood-Buff integrals (KBIs) and chemical potentials of model supercooled liquids with and without attractive interactions. We aim at investigating whether relatively small differences in the tail of the radial distribution functions result in contrasting thermodynamic properties. Our results suggest that the attractive potential favours the nucleation of long-range structures. Indeed, upon decreasing temperature, Bathia-Thornton structure factors display anomalous behaviour in the $k\to 0$ limit. KBIs extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit confirm this…
While the large majority of theoretical and numerical studies of the jamming transition consider athermal packings of purely repulsive spheres, real complex fluids and soft solids generically display attraction between particles. By studying the statistics of rigid clusters in simulations of soft particles with an attractive shell, we present evidence for two distinct jamming scenarios. Strongly attractive systems undergo a continuous transition in which rigid clusters grow and ultimately diverge in size at a critical packing fraction. Purely repulsive and weakly attractive systems jam via a f…
