The predictions of a class of phenomenological trap models of supercooled liquids are tested via computer simulation of a model glass-forming liquid. It is found that a model with a Gaussian distribution of trap energies provides a good description of the landscape dynamics, even at temperatures above $T_{c}$, the critical temperature of mode-coupling theory. A scenario is discussed whereby deep traps are composed of collections of inherent structures above $T_{c}$ and single inherent structures below $T_{c}$. Deviations from the simple Gaussian trap picture are quantified and discussed.
The liquid structure of a glass-forming binary alloy is studied using molecular dynamics simulations. The analysis combines common neighbour analysis with the geometrical approach of Frank and Kasper to establish that the supercooled liquid contains extended clusters characterised by the same short range order as the crystal. Fluctuations in these clusters exhibit strong correlations with fluctuations in the inherent structure energy. The steep increase in the heat capacity on cooling is, thus, directly coupled to the growing fluctuations of the Frank-Kasper clusters. The relaxation of particl…
We propose a method to analyze the dynamics of systems exhibiting slow relaxation which is based on mesoscopic non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The method allows us to obtain kinetic equations of the Fokker-Planck type for the probability functional and their corresponding Langevin equations. Our results are compared with the ones obtained by other authors.
Slow dynamics of difluorotetrachloroethane in both supercooled plastic crystal and supercooled liquid states have been investigated from Molecular Dynamics simulations. The temperature and wave-vector dependence of collective dynamics in both states are probed using coherent dynamical scattering functions $S(Q,t)$. Our results confirm the strong analogy between molecular liquids and plastic crystals for which $α$-relaxation times and non-ergodicity parameters are controlled by the non trivial static correlations $S(Q)$ as predicted by the Mode Coupling Theory. The use of infinitely thin needle…
We study the dynamics of water confined between hydrophobic flat surfaces at low temperature. At different pressures, we observe different behaviors that we understand in terms of the hydrogen bonds dynamics. At high pressure, the formation of the open structure of the hydrogen bond network is inhibited and the surfaces can be rapidly dehydrated by decreasing the temperature. At lower pressure the rapid ordering of the hydrogen bonds generates heterogeneities that are responsible for strong non-exponential behavior of the correlation function, but with no strong increase of the correlation tim…
Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study the slow dynamics of supercooled liquids confined in a random matrix of immobile obstacles. We study the dynamical crossover from glass-like to Lorentz-gas-like behavior in terms of the density correlation function, the mean square displacement, the nonlinear dynamic susceptibility, the non-Gaussian parameter, and the fragility. Cooperative and spatially heterogeneous dynamics are suppressed as the obstacle density increases, which lead to the more Arrhenius-like behavior in the temperature dependence of the relaxation time. Our findings are quali…
We present mode-coupling equations for the description of the slow dynamics observed in supercooled molecular liquids close to the glass transition. The mode-coupling theory (MCT) originally formulated to study the slow relaxation in simple atomic liquids, and then extended to the analysis of liquids composed by linear molecules, is here generalized to systems of arbitrarily shaped, rigid molecules. We compare the predictions of the theory for the $q$-vector dependence of the molecular nonergodicity parameters, calculated by solving numerically the molecular MCT equations in two different appr…
We formulate a microscopic, no adjustable parameter, theory of activated relaxation in supercooled liquids directly in terms of the repulsive and attractive forces within the framework of pair correlations. Under isochoric conditions, attractive forces can nonperturbatively modify slow dynamics, but at high enough density their influence vanishes. Under isobaric conditions, attractive forces play a minor role. High temperature apparent Arrhenius behavior and density-temperature scaling are predicted. Our results are consistent with recent isochoric simulations and isobaric experiments on a dee…
We demonstrate, via numerical simulations, that the relaxation dynamics of supercooled liquids correlates well with a plastic length scale measuring a particle's response to impulsive localized perturbations and weakly to measures of local elasticity. We find that the particle averaged plastic length scale vanishes linearly in temperature and controls the super-Arrhenius temperature dependence of the relaxation time. Furthermore, we show that the plastic length scale of individual particles correlates with their typical displacement at the relaxation time. In contrast, the local elastic respon…
Breakdown of Stokes-Einstein relation in supercooled liquids is believed to be one of the hallmarks of glass transition. The phenomena is studied in depth over many years to understand the microscopic mechanism without much success. Recently it was found that violation of Stokes-Einstein relation in supercooled liquids can be tuned very systematically by pinning randomly a set of particles in their equilibrium positions. This observation suggested a possible framework where breakdown of Stokes-Einstein relation in the dynamics of supercooled liquids can be studied with precise control. We have…
A complete understanding of the precipitous onset of slow dynamics in systems such as supercooled liquids requires making direct connections between dynamics and the underlying potential energy landscape. With the aid of a switch in ensembles, we show that it is possible to formulate a landscape-based mechanism for the onset of slow dynamics based on the rapid lengthening of the geodesic paths that traverse the landscape. We confirm the usefulness of this purely geometric analysis by showing that it successfully predicts the diffusion constants of a standard model supercooled liquid.
The primary and secondary relaxation timescales of aging colloidal suspensions of Laponite are estimated from intensity autocorrelation functions obtained in dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments. The dynamical slowing down of these relaxation processes are compared with observations in fragile supercooled liquids by establishing a one-to-one mapping between the waiting time since filtration of a Laponite suspension and the inverse of the temperature of a supercooled liquid that is rapidly quenched towards its glass transition temperature. New timescales, such as the Vogel time and the Ka…
We report a quantitative experimental study of the crystallization kinetics of supercooled quantum liquid mixtures of para-hydrogen (pH$_2$) and ortho-deuterium (oD$_2$) by high spatial resolution Raman spectroscopy of liquid microjets. We show that in a wide range of compositions the crystallization rate of the isotopic mixtures is significantly reduced with respect to that of the pure substances. To clarify this behavior we have performed path-integral simulations of the non-equilibrium pH$_2$-oD$_2$ liquid mixtures, revealing that differences in quantum delocalization between the two isotop…
In this article we study in detail the Q-vector dependence of the collective dynamics in simulated deeply supercooled SPC/E water. The evolution of the system has been followed for 250 ns at low T, allowing a clear identification of a two step relaxation process. We present evidence in favor of the use of the mode coupling theory for supercooled liquid as framework for the description of the slow alpha-relaxation dynamics in SPC/E water, notwithstanding the fact that the cage formation in this system is controlled by the formation of an open network of hydrogen bonds as opposed to packing cons…
The anomalous properties of water in the supercooled state are numerous and well-known. Particularly striking are the strong changes in dynamic properties that appear to display divergences at temperatures close to -- but beyond -- the lowest temperatures attainable either experimentally or in computer simulations. Recent work on slow or glassy dynamics in water suggests analogies with simple liquids not previously appreciated, and at the same time highlights some aspects that remain peculiar to water. A comparison of the behavior of water with normal liquids, with respect to its dynamic, ther…
We reveal the existence of systematic variations of isobaric fragility in different supercooled Lennard-Jones binary mixtures by performing molecular dynamics simulations. The connection between fragility and local structures in the bulk is analyzed by means of a Voronoi construction. We find that clusters of particles belonging to locally preferred structures form slow, long-lived domains, whose spatial extension increases by decreasing temperature. As a general rule, a more rapid growth, upon supercooling, of such domains is associated to a more pronounced super-Arrhenius behavior, hence to …
Few questions in condensed matter science have proven as difficult to unravel as the interplay between structure and dynamics in supercooled liquids and glasses. The conundrum: close to the glass transition, the dynamics slow down dramatically and become heterogeneous while the structure appears largely unperturbed. Largely unperturbed, however, is not the same as unperturbed, and many studies have attempted to identify "slow" local structures by exploiting dynamical information. Nonetheless, the question remains open: is the key to the slow dynamics imprinted in purely structural information?…
How useful it is to think about the potential energy landscape of a complex many-body system depends in large measure on how direct the connection is to the system's dynamics. In this paper we show that, within what we call the potential energy landscape ensemble, it is possible to make direct connections between the geometry of the landscape and the long-time dynamical behaviors of systems such as supercooled liquids. We show, in particular, that the onset of slow dynamics in such systems is governed directly by the lengths of their geodesics - the shortest paths through their landscapes with…
We introduce a semi-schematic mode-coupling model to describe the slow dynamics in molecular liquids, retaining explicitly only the description of the center of mass degrees of freedom. Angular degrees of freedom are condensed in a q-vector independent coupling parameter. We compare the time and q-dependence of the density fluctuation correlators with numerical data from a 250 ns long molecular dynamics simulation. Notwithstanding the choice of a network-forming liquid as a model for comparing theory and simulation, the model describes the main static and dynamic features of the relaxation in …
Supercooled water is a metastable phase of liquid water below the melting temperature. An interesting discussion recently developed on the relationship between crystallization rate and the time scales of equilibration within the liquid phase. Calculations using a coarse grained monatomic model of water, the mW model, suggested that equilibration of the liquid below the temperature of homogeneous nucleation $T_H\approx225$ K is slower than ice nucleation. Here, a 3 $μ$s long molecular dynamics simulation of the TIP4P-Ew water model is presented to investigate the relaxation properties of an ato…
Dynamical properties of a Lennard-Jones binary mixture embedded in an off lattice matrix of soft spheres are studied in the direct space upon supercooling by molecular dynamics simulations. On lowering temperature the smaller particles tend to avoid the soft sphere interfaces and correspondingly their mobility decreases below the one of the larger particles. The system displays a dynamic behaviour consistent with the Mode Coupling predictions. A decrease of the mode coupling crossover temperature with respect to the bulk is found. We find however that the range of validity of the theory shrink…
We present static and dynamic properties of molecular correlation functions S_{lmn,l'm'n'}(q,t) in a simulated supercooled liquid of water molecules, as a preliminary effort in the direction of solving the molecular mode coupling theory (MMCT) equations for supercooled molecular liquids. The temperature and time dependence of various molecular correlation functions, calculated from 250 ns long molecular dynamics simulations, show the characteristic patterns predicted by MMCT and shed light on the driving mechanism responsible for the slowing down of the molecular dynamics. We also discuss the …
Large scale molecular dynamics simulations are used to investigate the structural and dynamical modifications of supercooled water when confined inside an hydrophilic nanopore. We then investigate the evolution of the auto-organization of the most and the least mobile molecules (dynamical heterogeneity and string-like cooperative motions) when supercooled water is confined. Our calculations use the recent TIP5P intermolecular potential for water. We observe a strong slowing down of the dynamical properties when the liquid is confined, although the liquid structure is found to remain unchanged …
We study the effect of heavy impurities on the dynamics of supercooled liquids. When a small fraction of particles in the supercooled liquid is made heavier, they exhibit slower dynamics than the original particles and also make the overall system slower. If one looks at the overlap correlation function to quantify dynamics in the system, it has different behavior for the heavy and the light particles. In particular, at the relaxation time of the overall system, the degree of relaxation achieved by the heavier particles is lesser on average than that achieved by the light particles. This diffe…
We perform molecular-dynamics simulations of a molecular system in supercooled states for different values of inertia parameters to provide evidence that the long-time dynamics depends only on the equilibrium structure. This observation is consistent with the prediction of the mode-coupling theory for the glass transition and with the hypothesis that the potential energy-landscape controls the slow dynamics. We also find that dynamical properties at intermediate wavenumber depend on the spatial correlation of the molecule's geometrical center.
We have performed molecular dynamics simulations for a model two-dimensional soft-core mixture in a supercooled state. The mixture exhibits a slow structural relaxation in a quiescent state, however, the relaxation is much enhanced in sheared states. There observed surprisingly small anisotropy both in the coherent and incoherent density correlation functions even under extremely strong shear which is $10^3$ times faster than the structural relaxation rate. The present simulation results agree well with predictions of the recently developed mode-coupling theory in shear.

We perform stringent tests of thermodynamic theories of the glass transition over the experimentally relevant temperature regime for several simulated glass-formers. The swap Monte Carlo algorithm is used to estimate the configurational entropy and static point-to-set lengthscale, and careful extrapolations are used for the relaxation times. We first quantify the relation between configurational entropy and the point-to-set lengthscale in two and three dimensions. We then show that the Adam-Gibbs relation is generally violated in simulated models for the experimentally relevant time window. Co…
The classic Kob-Andersen (KA) binary Lennard-Jones mixtures which are designed to prevent crystallization has been extensively studied in simulation of slow dynamics. Although crystallization can occur if a liquid system is cooled slowly, so far the KA model has not been crystallized. Here we report using molecular simulation the observation of crystal growth in the supercooled KA liquids. The onset of crystallization is observed occurring at temperature $T_c= 0.55$ which is higher than the glass transition temperature of $T_g=0.40$. We further examine the statistical distribution of single pa…
A model for the supercooled liquid is considered by taking into account its solid like properties. We focus on how the long time dynamics is affected due to the coupling between the slowly decaying density fluctuations and the local displacement variables in the frozen liquid. Results from our model agree with the recent observation of Novikov and Sokolov [Nature (London) {\bf 431}, 961 (2004)] that the fragility index $m$ of a glass forming material is linearly related to the corresponding ratio $K/G$ of the bulk and the shear moduli.
The origins of rapid dynamical slow down in glass forming liquids in the growth of static length scales, possibly associated with identifiable structural ordering, is a much debated issue. Growth of medium range crystalline order (MRCO) has been observed in various model systems to be associated with glassy behaviour. Such observations raise the question about the eventual state reached by a glass former, if allowed to relax for sufficiently long times. Is a slowly growing crystalline order responsible for slow dynamics? Are the molecular mechanisms for glass transition in liquids with and wit…
Molecular dynamics simulations are performed for a supercooled simple liquid with changing the system size from N=108 to $10^4$ to examine possible finite-size effects. Although almost no systematic deviation is detected in the static pair correlation functions, it is demonstrated that the structural $α$ relaxation in a small system becomes considerably slower than that in larger systems for temperatures below $T_c$ at which the size of the cooperative particle motions becomes comparable to the unit cell length of the small system. The discrepancy increases with decreasing temperature.
In a recent computer study, we have shown that the combination of spatially heterogeneous dynamics and kinetic facilitation provides a microscopic explanation for the emergence of excess wings in deeply supercooled liquids. Motivated by these findings, we construct a minimal empirical model to describe this physics and introduce dynamic facilitation in the trap model, which was initially developed to capture the thermally-activated dynamics of glassy systems. We fully characterise the relaxation dynamics of this facilitated trap model varying the functional form of energy distributions and the…
Generation of equilibrium configurations is the major obstacle for numerical investigation of the slow dynamics in supercooled liquid states. The parallel tempering (PT) technique, originally proposed for the numerical equilibration of discrete spin-glass model configurations, has recently been applied in the study of supercooled structural glasses. We present an investigation of the ability of parallel tempering to properly sample the liquid configuration space at different temperatures, by mapping the PT dynamics into the dynamics of the closest local potential energy minima (inherent struct…
In order to describe the slow response of a glass former we discuss some distribution of correlation times, e.g., the generalized gamma distribution (GG) and an extension thereof (GGE), the latter allowing to reproduce a simple peak susceptibility such as of Cole-Davidson type as well as a susceptibility exhibiting an additional high frequency power law contribution (excess wing). Applying the GGE distribution to the dielectric spectra of glass formers exhibiting no beta-process peak (glycerol, propylene carbonate and picoline) we are able to reproduce the salient features of the slow response…
Motivated by an experimental finding on the density of supercooled water at high pressure [O. Mishima, J. Chem. Phys. 133, 144503 (2010)] we performed atomistic molecular dynamics simulations study of bulk water in the isothermal-isobaric ensemble. Cooling and heating cycles at different isobars and isothermal compression at different temperatures are performed on the water sample with pressures that range from 0 to 1.0 GPa. The cooling simulations are done at temperatures that range from 40 K to 380 K using two different cooling rates, 10 K/ns and 10 K/5 ns. For the heating simulations we use…
A theoretical treatment of deeply supercooled liquids is difficult because their properties emerge from spatial inhomogeneities that are self-induced, transient, and nanoscopic. I use computer simulations to analyse self-induced static and dynamic heterogeneity in equilibrium systems approaching the experimental glass transition. I characterise the broad sample-to-sample fluctuations of salient dynamic and thermodynamic properties in elementary mesoscopic systems. Findings regarding local lifetimes and distributions of dynamic heterogeneity are in excellent agreement with recent single molecul…
A few years ago it was showed that some systems that have very similar local structure, as quantified by the pair correlation function, exhibit vastly different slowing down upon supercooling [L. Berthier and G. Tarjus, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 170601 (2009); U.R. Pedersen, T.B. Schroder and J.C. Dyre, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 157801 (2010)]. Recently, a more subtle structural quantity, the so-called "point-to-set" length, was found to reliably correlate with the average dynamics [G.M. Hocky, T.E. Markland and D.R. Reichman, Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 225506 (2012)]. Here we use computer simulations to e…
The slow dynamics of glass-forming liquids is generally ascribed to the cage-jump motion. In the cage-jump picture, a molecule remains in a cage formed by neighboring molecules, and after a sufficiently long time, it jumps to escape from the original position by cage-breaking. The clarification of the cage-jump motion is therefore linked to unraveling the fundamental element of the slow dynamics. Here, we develop a cage-jump model for the dynamics of supercooled water. The caged and jumping states of a water molecule are introduced with respect to the hydrogen-bond (H-bond) rearrangement proce…
We use molecular simulation to study the structural and dynamic properties of glassy nanoclusters formed both through the direct condensation of the vapor below the glass transition temperature, without the presence of a substrate, and \textit{via} the slow supercooling of unsupported liquid nanodroplets. An analysis of local structure using Voronoi polyhedra shows that the energetic stability of the clusters is characterized by a large, increasing fraction of bicapped square antiprism motifs. We also show that nanoclusters with similar inherent structure energies are structurally similar, ind…
We report on quantitative comparisons between simulation results of a bead-spring model and mode-coupling theory calculations for the structural and conformational dynamics of a supercooled, unentangled polymer melt. We find semiquantitative agreement between simulation and theory, except for processes that occur on intermediate length scales between the compressibility plateau and the amorphous halo of the static structure factor. Our results suggest that the onset of slow relaxation in a glass-forming melt can be described in terms of monomer-caging supplemented by chain connectivity. Furthe…
Liquids relax extremely slowly upon approaching the glass state. One explanation is that an entropy crisis, due to the rarefaction of available states, makes it increasingly arduous to reach equilibrium in that regime. Validating this scenario is challenging, because experiments offer limited resolution, while numerical studies lag more than eight orders of magnitude behind experimentally-relevant timescales. In this work we not only close the colossal gap between experiments and simulations but manage to create in-silico configurations that have no experimental analog yet. Deploying a range o…
In active microrheology the mechanical properties of a material are tested by adding probe particles which are pulled by an external force. In case of supercooled liquids, strong forcing leads to a thinning of the host material which becomes more pronounced as the system approaches the glass transition. In this work we provide a quantitative theoretical description of this thinning behavior based on the properties of the Potential Energy Landscape (PEL) of a model glass-former. A key role plays the trap-like nature of the PEL. We find that the mechanical properties in the strongly driven syste…
We review the inherent structure thermodynamical formalism and the formulation of an equation of state for liquids in equilibrium based on the (volume) derivatives of the statistical properties of the potential energy surface. We also show that, under the hypothesis that during aging the system explores states associated to equilibrium configurations, it is possible to generalize the proposed equation of state to out-of-equilibrium conditions. The proposed formulation is based on the introduction of one additional parameter which, in the chosen thermodynamic formalism, can be chosen as the loc…
The relationship between the microscopic arrangement of molecules in a supercooled liquid and its slow dynamics at low temperature near glass transition is studied by Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. A Lennard-Jones liquid with polydispersity in size and mass of constituent particles is chosen as the model system. Our studies reveal that the local structure (that varies with polydispersity) plays a crucial role both in the slowing down of dynamics and in the growth of the dynamic heterogeneities, besides determining the glass forming ability (GFA) of the system. Increasing polydispersity a…
Acetyl salicylic acid, deuterated at the methyl group, was investigated using 2H-NMR in its supercooled and glassy states. Just above the glass transition temperature the molecular reorientations were studied using stimulated-echo spectroscopy and demonstrated a large degree of similarity with other glass formers. Deep in the glassy phase the NMR spectra look similar to those reported for the crystal [A. Detken, P. Focke, H. Zimmermann, U. Haeberlen, Z. Olejniczak, Z. T. Lalowicz, Z. Naturforsch. A 50 (1995) 95] and below 20 K they are indicative for rotational tunneling with a relatively larg…
The thermodynamic and kinetic anomalies of supercooled liquids are analyzed from the perspective of energy landscapes. A mean field model, a generalized random energy model of liquids is developed, which exhibits a dynamical transition of the onset of slow dynamics at T_0, alteration of the nature of motion from the saddle-to-saddle to minimum-to-minimum motion at T_c, and an ideal glass transition at T_k. If the energy spectrum of the configurations has a low energy tail, the model also allows a thermodynamic liquid-liquid transition at T_l. The liquid-liquid transition of the model is correl…
Orientational relaxation (OR) in a viscous, glassy liquid is investigated by carrying out extensive NPT molecular dynamics simulations of isolated ellipsoids in a glass forming binary mixture. Near the glass transition, the OR occurs mainly via hopping involving either a ring- or a tunnel like motion, with the participation of several neighboring atoms. In the glassy state, hopping is found to be accompanied by larger fluctuations in the total energy and the volume of the system. Both orientational and translational hopping are found to be {\it gated}, restricted primarily by the entropic bott…
We study confined colloidal suspensions as a model system which approximates the behavior of confined small molecule glass-formers. Dense colloidal suspensions become glassier when confined between parallel glass plates. We use confocal microscopy to study the motion of confined colloidal particles. In particular, we examine the influence particles stuck to the glass plates have on nearby free particles. Confinement appears to be the primary influence slowing free particle motion, and proximity to stuck particles causes a secondary reduction in the mobility of free particles. Overall, particle…
Properties of water have been well elucidated for temperatures above $\sim$230 K and yet mysteries remain in the deeply supercooled region. By performing extensive molecular dynamics simulations on this supercooled region, we find that structural and dynamical instabilities are hidden in the experimentally inaccessible region between 235 K and 150 K. We find a hitherto undiscovered fragmentation from 220 K to 190 K, which is the break-up of large clusters consisting of molecules with locally distorted tetrahedral structure into small pieces with one or two isolated defects. The fragmentation l…
The term "fragility" describes the rate at which viscosity grows when a supercooled liquid approaches its putative glass transition temperature. The field of glassy materials is actively searching for a structural origin that governs this dynamical slowing down in the supercooled liquid, which occurs without any discernible change in structure. Our work shows clear evidence that growing many-body static amorphous order is intimately correlated with the kinetic fragility of glass-forming liquids. It confirms that the system's dynamical response to temperature is concealed in its micro-structure…
The existence of a phase transition between two distinct liquid phases in single-component network-forming liquids (e.g., water, silica, silicon) has elicited considerable scientific interest. The challenge, both for experiments and simulations, is that the liquid-liquid phase transition occurs under deeply supercooled conditions, where crystallization occurs very rapidly. Thus, early evidence from numerical equation of state studies was challenged, with the argument that slow spontaneous crystallization had been misinterpreted as evidence of a second liquid state. Rigorous free energy calcula…
