We have investigated the intermediate valence narrow-gap semiconductor SmB6 at low temperatures using both conventional spear-anvil type point contacts as well as mechanically controllable break junctions. The zero-bias conductance varied between less than 0.01 mikrosiemens and up to 1 mS. The position of the spectral anomalies, which are related to the different activation energies and band gaps of SmB6, did not depend on the the contact size. Two different regimes of charge transport could be distinguished: Contacts with large zero - bias conductance are in the diffusive Maxwell regime. They had spectra with only small non-linearities. Contacts with small zero - bias conductance are in the tunnelling regime. They had larger anomalies, but still indicating a finite 45 % residual quasiparticle density of states at the Fermi level at low temperatures of T = 0.1 K. The density of states derived from the tunelling spectra can be decomposed into two energy-dependent parts with Eg = 21 meV and Ed = 4.5 meV wide gaps, respectively.
We report single crystal growth and physical properties characterization of YbFe$_2$Al$_{10}$ compounds. The measurements of resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat show different behaviors from previous studies on polycrystal samples. A mixed valent characteristic with moderate mass enhancement is indicated. In particular, the optical spectroscopy measurement reveals formation of multiple hybridization energy gaps which become progressively pronounced at low temperature. The multiple hybridization energy gaps are likely caused by the hybridizations between the flat band from Y…
Taken together and viewed holistically, recent theory, low temperature (T) transport, photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum oscillation experiments have built a very strong case that the paradigmatic mixed valence insulator SmB6 is currently unique as a three-dimensional strongly correlated topological insulator (TI). As such, its many-body T-dependent bulk gap brings an extra richness to the physics beyond that of the weakly correlated TI materials. How will the robust, symmetry-protected TI surface states evolve as the gap closes with increasing T? For SmB6 exploiting this opportunity first…
We present THz measurements of thin films of mixed-valent YbAl$_3$ and its structural analogue LuAl$_3$. Combined with traditional Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the extended Drude formalism is utilized to study the low-frequency transport of these materials. We find that LuAl$_3$ demonstrates conventional Drude transport whereas at low temperatures YbAl$_3$ demonstrates a sharply renormalized Drude peak and a mid-infrared (MIR) peak in the conductivity, indicative of the formation of a heavy Fermi liquid. In YbAl$_3$ the extended Drude framework shows a consistency of the sca…
Single-phase samples of Yb4LiGe4 and Yb5Ge4 were synthesized using high frequency (HF) heat treatment. Yb4LiGe4 crystallizes in orthorhombic space group Pnma with the Gd5Si4 type of crystal structure and lattice parameters a = 7.0571(1) Angs, b = 14.6239(1) Angs, and c = 7.6155(1) Angs. One Yb position in Yb5Ge4 is substituted by the lithium atom and causes a distortion of the germanium tetragons in Yb4LiGe4. Investigation of the electronic state of Yb via magnetic susceptibility and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) revealed a presence of two electronic states of ytterbium, 4f13…
The superconductivity in high temperature superconductors ordinarily arises when doped with hetero-valent ions that introduce charge carriers. However, in ferropnictides, "iso-valent" doping, which is generally believed not to introduce charge carriers, can induce superconductivity as well. Moreover, unlike other ferropnictides, the superconducting gap in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 has been found to contain nodal lines. The exact nature of the "iso-valent" doping and nodal gap here are key open issues in building a comprehensive picture of the iron-based high temperature superconductors. With angle-resol…
We report soft point-contact spectroscopy studies of URu2Si2 both in the hidder order (HO) and the large-moment antiferromagnetic (LMAF) states accessed by pressure. In the HO state at ambient pressure, the spectroscopy shows two asymmetric peaks around the Fermi energy that emerge below the hidden order temperature T_{HO}. In the LMAF state at higher pressures, the spectra are remarkably similar to those in the HO state, indicating a similar Fermi surface gapping in the HO and LMAF states and providing a new clue to unraveling the puzzling HO state.
We show that Fano interference explains how point contact spectroscopy in heavy electron materials probes the emergence of the Kondo heavy electron liquid below the same characteristic temperature T* as that seen in many other experiments, and why the resulting measured conductance asymmetry reflects the universal Kondo liquid behavior seen in these. Its physical origin is the opening of a new channel for electron tunneling beyond that available from the background conduction electrons. We propose a simple phenomenological expression for the resulting Fano interference that provides a good fit…
Differential resistance spectra (${\rm d}V/{\rm d}I-V$ characteristics) have been measured for point-contacts between the heavy-fermion superconductor (HFS) CePt$_{3}$Si and a normal metal. Some contacts show a peak at V=0 that is characteristic of HFS coexisting with a magnetic order such as UPd$_2$Al$_3$, UNi$_2$Al$_3$ and URu$_2$Si$_2$. The evolution of the peak occurs well above the antiferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm N}\sim$ 2.2 K, so that the direct relationship with the magnetic transition is questionable. The half-width of the peak seems to reflect the crystal field splitt…
In contrast to our recent finding of an X-point band gap in divalent hexaborides, we report here that angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data shows that the gap is absent for trivalent LaB$_6$ and is absent or nearly so for mixed valent SmB$_6$. This finding demonstrates a nontrivial evolution of the band structure from divalent to trivalent hexaborides.
We use point contact Andreev reflection spin spectroscopy to measure the transport spin polarization of MnAs epitaxial films grown on (001) GaAs. By analyzing both the temperature dependence of the contact resistance and the phonon spectra of lead acquired simultaneously with the spin polarization measurements, we demonstrate that all the point contacts are in the ballistic limit. A ballistic transport spin polarization of approximately 49% and 44% is obtained for the type A and type B orientations of MnAs, respectively. These measurements are consistent with our density functional calculation…
Resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) was used to determine the pressure dependence of the f-electron occupancy in the Kondo insulator SmB6. Applied pressure reduces the f-occupancy, but surprisingly, the material maintains a significant divalent character up to a pressure of at least 35 GPa. Thus, the closure of the resistive activation energy gap and onset of magnetic order are not driven by stabilization of an integer valent state. Over the entire pressure range, the material maintains a remarkably stable intermediate valence that can in principle support a nontrivial band structure.
We present a study of the anisotropy in the superconducting energy gap in a single crystal of YNi2B2C (Tc~14.6K) using directional point contact spectroscopy. The superconducting energy gap at 2.7K, when measured for I||c, is 4.5 times larger than that for I||a. The energy gaps in the two directions also have different temperature dependences. Our results support a scenario with s+g like symmetry.
Point-contact (PC) investigations of the heavy-fermion (HF) superconductor PrOs4Sb12 in the temperature range between 1.5 and 4.2K and in a magnetic field up to 8T are presented. The main feature in PC spectra, the second derivative of the I-V curves, in the normal state is a peak at about 1-3mV. This low energy peak is smeared by the temperature rise and suppressed (or splitted) by a magnetic field. The origin of the peak is likely excitation of the Pr^3+ ion from the ground $Γ_1$ state to the upper $Γ_5$ state, considering the generally accepted crystalline electric field (CEF) schema in PrO…
We report a distinct experimental approach to point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy with diagnostic capability via a unique design of nano-scale normal metal/superconductor devices with excellent thermo-mechanical stability, and have employed this method to unveil the existence of two superconducting energy gaps in iron chalcogenide Fe1+yTe1-xSex which is crucial for understanding its pairing mechanism. This work opens up new opportunities to study gap structures in superconductors and elemental excitations in solids.
We present conductance-voltage (G-V) data for point contact junctions between a normal metal and the electron doped cuprate superconductor Pr{2-x}Ce{x}CuO4 (PCCO). We observe a zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) for the under-doped composition of this cuprate (x=0.13) which is consistent with d-wave pairing symmetry. For optimally-doped (x=0.15) and over-doped (x=0.17) PCCO, we find that the G-V characteristics indicate the presence of an order parameter without nodes. We investigate this further by obtaining point contact spectroscopy data for different barrier strengths and as a function of m…
For a successful point-contact spectroscopy (PCS) measurement, metallic tips of proper shape and smoothness are essential to ensure the ballistic nature of a point-contact junction. Until recently, the fabrication of Au tips suitable for use in point-contact spectroscopy has remained more of an art involving a trial and error method rather than an automated scientific process. To address these issues, we have developed a technique with which one can prepare high quality Au tips reproducibly and systematically. It involves an electronic control of the driving voltages used for an electrochemica…
In this paper we report the results of electrical resistivity (1.5K < T <300K) and point contact spectroscopy (PCS) measurements on single crystals of metallic sodium tungsten bronze with varying sodium content. We have shown that the electron-phonon coupling function as measured through PCS can explain quantitatively the large temperature dependence of resistivity $ρ$ seen in these materials over the entire temperature range. The electron-phonon coupling function shows predominatly large peaks for phonon frequency range of 30meV < $ω$ 100meV which match well with the calculated optical phonon…
In the hole-doped $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave cuprate superconductor, due to the midgap surface state (MSS), a zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) is widely observed in [110] interface point contact spectroscopy (PCS). However, ZBCP of this geometry is rarely observed in the electron-doped cuprates, even though their pairing symmetry is still likely the $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave. We argue that this is due to the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and the superconducting (SC) orders. Generalizing the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) formula to include an AF coupling, it is shown explicitly that the MSS …
We develop a microscopic theory for the point-contact conductance between a metalic electrode and a strongly correlated material using the non-equilibrium Schwinger-Kadanoff-Baym-Keldysh formalism. We explicitly show that in the classical limit, contact size shorter than the scattering length of the system, the microscopic model can be reduced to an effective model with transfer matrix elements that conserve in-plane momentum. We find that the conductance $dI/dV$ is proportional to the {\it effective density of states}, that is, the integrated single-particle spectral function $A(ω=eV)$ over t…
The dynamic conductance of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ is measured by point-contact spectroscopy as a function of temperature from 60 K down to 400 mK. The contact between the gold tip and the single-crystal is shown to be in the Sharvin limit with the enhanced sub-gap conductance arising from Andreev reflection. The zero-bias conductance data are best fit using the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model with a d-wave superconducting order parameter. A fit to the full conductance curve at 400 mK indicates strong coupling ($2Δ(0)/k_\textrm{B}T_\textrm{c} = 4.6$) and quantifies …
We develop a minimal model to calculate point-contact spectra between a metallic tip and a superconducting heavy-fermion system. We apply our tunneling model to the heavy fermion CeCoIn5, both in the normal and superconducting state. In point-contact and scanning tunneling spectroscopy many heavy-fermion materials, like CeCoIn5, exhibit an asymmetric differential conductance, dI/dV, combined with a strongly suppressed Andreev reflection signal in the superconducting state. We argue that both features may be explained in terms of a multichannel tunneling model in the presence of localized state…
Recent renewed interest in the mixed valent insulator SmB6 comes from topological theory predictions and surface transport measurements of possible in-gap surface states whose existence is most directly probed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Early photoemission leading up to a recent flurry of ARPES studies of in-gap states is reviewed. Conflicting interpretations about the nature of the Sm 4f-5d hybridization gap and observed X-point bands between the f-states and the Fermi level are critically assessed using the important tools of photon polarization and spatial depende…
We review recent progress in point contact spectroscopy (PCS) to extract spectroscopic information out of correlated electron materials, with the emphasis on non-superconducting states. PCS has been used to detect bosonic excitations in normal metals, where signatures (e.g. phonons) are usually less than 1$\%$ of the measured conductance. In the superconducting state, point contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) has been widely used to study properties of the superconducting gap in various superconductors. In the last decade, there have been more and more experimental results suggesting that the po…
Point contact spectroscopy (PCS) is a technique which can reveal the size and symmetry of a superconducting gap ($Δ$) and is especially useful for new materials such as the iron-based superconductors. PCS is usually employed in conjunction with the extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk (BTK) model which is used to extract information such as the existence of nodes in $Δ$ from PCS data obtained on unconventional superconductors. The BTK model uses a dimensionless parameter $Z$ to quantify the barrier strength across a normal metal - superconductor junction. We have used a unique feature of PCS whic…
A brief overview of the superconducting energy gap studies on 122-type family of iron pnictides is given. It seems that the situation in the hole-doped Ba1-xKxFe2As2 is well resolved. Most of the measurements including the presented here point-contact Andreev reflection spectra agree on existence of multiple nodeless gaps in the excitation spectrum of this multiband system. The gaps have basically two sizes - the small one with a strength up to the BCS weak coupling limit and the large one with a very strong coupling with 2Delta/kTc ~ 6 - 8. In the electron doped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 the most of t…
Our previous point-contact Andreev reflection studies of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ using Au tips have shown two clear features: reduced Andreev signal and asymmetric background conductance [1]. To explore their physical origins, we have extended our measurements to point-contact junctions between single crystalline heavy-fermion metals and superconducting Nb tips. Differential conductance spectra are taken on junctions with three heavy-fermion metals, CeCoIn$_5$, CeRhIn$_5$, and YbAl$_3$, each with different electron mass. In contrast with Au/CeCoIn$_5$ junctions, Andreev sig…
