We investigate the near-infrared K-band properties of the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in a sample of 93 galaxy clusters and groups, using data from the Two Micron All Sky Survey. Our cluster sample spans a factor of 70 in mass, making it sensitive to cluster mass related trends. We study the correlations between the BCG luminosity L_b and the mass or luminosity of the host clusters, finding that BCGs in more massive clusters are more luminous than their counterparts in less massive systems, and that the BCGs become less important in the overall cluster light L200 as cluster mass increases. We argue that BCGs grow in luminosity mainly by merging with other luminous galaxies as the host clusters grow hierarchically; the decreasing BCG luminosity fraction L_b/L_200 with cluster mass indicates that the rate of luminosity growth in BCGs is slow compared to the rate at which clusters acquire galaxy light from the field or other merging clusters.
We use the observed cluster luminosity-mass relation and a merger tree model to estimate that the amount of intracluster light (ICL) increases with cluster mass; calculations suggest that in 10^{15}Mo clusters more than 50% of total stellar mass is in ICL. The cluster baryon fraction accounting for the ICL is in good agreement with the CMB constraints. The inclusion of ICL reduces thediscrepancy between the observed cluster cold baryon fraction and that found in hydro simulations. Based on the observed Fe abundance in the ICM, we find that the predicted ICL together with the observed galaxy light, match the Fe mass-tolight ratio expected from simple stellar population models with a Salpeter IMF. The ICL also makes it easier to produce the Fe core excess found in cool-core clusters. (abridged)
We present a detailed analysis of the surface brightness distribution of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in each of 24 galaxy clusters at 0.03<z<0.13. We use two-dimensional profile fitting to model the surface brightness out to r=300 kpc for each BCG, comparing r^{1/4}, r^{1/n}, and double r^{1/4} models. We obtain statistically superior fits using a two component model consisting of a pair of r^{1/4} profiles with independent scale lengths, ellipticities, and orientations. The two component model can simply reproduce the observed position angle and ellipticity gradients, which cannot gene…
We present deep, large area B and r' imaging for a sample of 49 brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). The clusters were selected by their x-ray luminosity and redshift to form two volume limited samples, one with mean redshift ~ 0.07 and one at a mean redshift ~ 0.17. For each cluster the data cover 41' by 41'. We discuss our data reduction techniques in detail, and show that we can reliably measure the surface brightness at the levels of mu_B ~ 29 and mu_r' ~ 28. For each galaxy we present the B and r' images together with the surface brightness profile, B-r' colour, eccentricity and position an…
I review the progress in research on intracluster planetary nebulae over the last five years. Hundreds more intracluster planetary nebulae have been detected in the nearby Virgo and Fornax galaxy clusters, searches of several galaxy groups have been made, and intracluster planetary candidates have been detected in the distant Coma cluster. The first theoretical studies of intracluster planetaries have also been completed, studying their utility as tracers of the intracluster light as a whole, and also as individual objects. From the results to date, it appears that intracluster planetaries are…
We report the search for intracluster light in four Abell Type II/III (non-cD) galaxy clusters: Abell 801, 1234, 1553, & 1914. We find on average that these clusters contain $\sim$ 10% of their detected stellar luminosity in a diffuse component. We show that for two of the clusters the intracluster light closely follows the galaxy distribution, but in the other two cases, there are noticeable differences between the spatial distribution of the galaxies and the intracluster light. We report the results of a search for intracluster tidal debris in each cluster, and note that Abell 1914 in partic…
Using N-body numerical simulations, we examine possible mechanisms for the origin of the intracluster starlight features recently discovered in the Coma cluster of galaxies. We show that tidal interactions of a ``normal'' elliptical galaxy with a symmetrically distributed dark matter potential do not produce the observed intracluster starlight features. A head-on collision of two normal ellipticals does, however, explain the origin of the intracluster features with surface brightness about 26 mag/arcsec$^2$). Another possible explanation for the intracluster starlight features is galactic tida…
Planetary nebulae can be useful dynamical probes of elliptical galaxy halos, but progress thus far has been hampered by the small data samples available for study. In order to obtain a large sample of planetary nebulae for dynamical analysis, we have re-observed the giant elliptical galaxy M87 in the center of the Virgo Cluster. Surprisingly, we find that the M87 sample is contaminated by a significant fraction of intracluster objects. Follow up observations of three blank fields in the cluster confirm that a significant fraction of Virgo's starlight is intracluster. We discuss the implication…
I review the progress in research on Intracluster Planetary Nebulae (IPN). Hundreds of IPN candidates have now been found in the Virgo and Fornax galaxy clusters, and searches of two nearby galaxy groups have made. From the results thus far, approximately 10 - 20% of all stars in Virgo and Fornax are in an intracluster component, but there are few such stars in galaxy groups. From the spatial distribution of IPN, it appears that the intracluster stars are clustered, in agreement with tidal-stripping scenarios. In Virgo, the IPN have a large line-of-sight depth, which implies that the bulk of i…
Although the existence of a faint background of starlight in the core of the Coma cluster has been well established (1,2), its origin is uncertain. This vast sea of stars could have formed outside the galaxies, using gas left over from the time of the cluster's birth. Alternatively, it might be the accumulated debris generated by interactions between the galaxies over the lifetime of the cluster (3). Here we report the discovery of three large, low surface brightness features in the Coma cluster; the most spectacular is a plume-like structure, 130 kpc long, in the cluster's heart. These struct…
We present some early results from our deep imaging survey of galaxy clusters intended to detect and study intracluster light (ICL). From our observations to date, we find that ICL is common in galaxy clusters, and that substructure in the ICL also appears to be common as well. We also discuss some initial comparisons of our imaging results to high-resolution numerical simulations of galaxy clusters, and give avenues for future research.
By means of simple numerical models we discuss whether "collisionless stellar evaporation" from cluster elliptical galaxies could be an effective mechanism for the production of intracluster stellar populations. The effectiveness of this mechanism is due to the fact that, for realistic galaxy and cluster models, the galaxy oscillation periods near equilibrium configurations in the cluster tidal field are of the same order of stellar orbital times in the external parts of the galaxies themselves. With the aid of Monte-Carlo simulations we explore the evolution of stellar orbits in oscillating g…
I will review the latest results for the presence of diffuse light in the nearby universe and at intermediate redshift, and then discuss the latest results from hydrodynamical cosmological simulations of cluster formation on the expected properties of diffuse light in clusters. I shall present how intracluster planetary nebulae (ICPNe) can be used as excellent tracers of the diffuse stellar population in nearby clusters, and how their number density profile and radial velocity distribution can provide an observational test for models of cluster formation. The preliminary comparison of availabl…
The case is made that the intracluster medium (ICM) in spiral-rich galaxy groups today probably has undergone much slower evolution than that in elliptical-rich groups and clusters. The environments of proto-clusters and proto-groups at z > 2 are likely similar to spiral-rich group environments at lower redshift. Therefore, like the ICM in spiral-rich groups today, the ICM in proto-groups and proto-clusters at z > 2 is predicted to be significantly multiphased. The QSO Lyman alpha forest in the vicinity of galaxies is an effective probe of the ICM at a wide range of redshift. Two recent observ…
Cosmological simulations of structure formation predict that galaxies are dramatically modified by galaxy harassment during the assembly of galaxy clusters, losing a substantial fraction of their stellar mass which today must be in the form of intracluster stars. Simulations predict non-uniform spatial and radial velocity distributions for these stars. Intracluster planetary nebulae are the only abundant component of the intracluster light whose kinematics can be measured at this time. Comparing these velocity distributions with simulations will provide a unique opportunity to investigate the …
With the aid of simple numerical models, we discuss a particular aspect of the interaction between stellar orbital periods inside elliptical galaxies (Es) and the parent cluster tidal field (CTF), i.e., the possibility that collisionless stellar evaporation from Es is an effective mechanism for the production of the recently discovered intracluster stellar populations (ISP). These very preliminary investigations, based on idealized galaxy density profiles (such as Ferrers density distributions) show that, over an Hubble time, the amount of stars lost by a representative galaxy may sum up to th…
One of the possible origins of short gamma-ray bursts (SGRBs) is merging of compact binaries, and the effect of large kick velocity is a signature that can be used as an observational test for this hypothesis. Intracluster SGRBs that escaped from a host galaxy in a galaxy cluster are interesting in this context, since they would escape more easily by cluster tidal force, and would have brighter afterglow luminosity by dense intracluster gas, than those in general field galaxies. Here we calculate the escape fraction of compact binaries from their host galaxies in a galaxy cluster, and discuss …
We present the composite luminosity function of a sample of 17 low-redshift galaxy clusters. Our luminosity functions have been measured for an inner region ($r \leq r_{200}$) and an outer region ($r_{200} \leq r \leq 2r_{200}$) centred on each Brightest Cluster Galaxy. The inner region luminosity function has a significantly flatter faint-end slope ($α_{inner}= -1.81 \pm 0.02$) than the outer region ($α_{outer}= -2.07 \pm 0.02$). These results are consistent with the hypothesis that a large fraction of dwarf galaxies near cluster centres are being tidally disrupted.
We present a ground-based near-infrared K-band image and an HST/WFPC2 image of the brightest cluster galaxy in Abell 193 (IC 1695). This object was selected as the central cluster galaxy using X-ray information. Both images reveal a triple nucleus structure. Previously, this galaxy was thought to have only 2 nuclei. We present colours and magnitudes and a colour plot of the three nuclei. The nuclear structure and colours of the nuclei in this galaxy suggest that a merger may have taken place in its recent history.
We assemble a sample of galaxy clusters whose brightest members are dumbbell galaxies and compare them with a control sample in order to investigate if they are the result of recent mergers. We show that the dumbbell sample is no more likely than other clusters to exhibit subclustering. However, they are much more likely to have at least one dumbbell component possessing a significant peculiar velocity with respect to the parent cluster than a non-dumbbell brightest cluster member. We interpret this in the context of seeing the clusters at various stages of post-merger relaxation.
Elliptical galaxies are often assumed to be the primary source of heavy elements in the intracluster medium (ICM), with the contribution of other morphological types being negligible. In this paper we argue that a role of spiral galaxies in the chemical evolution of the ICM is also important. This statement rests upon our recent calculations of the heavy element loss from a disk galaxy through the hot steady-state galactic wind and dust grains expulsion by stellar radiation pressure. We show that a typical disk galaxy is nearly as effective in enriching the ICM as an elliptical galaxy of the s…
The intergalactic gas in groups and clusters of galaxies bears the indelible stamp of galaxy formation. We present a comparison between observations and simple theoretical models indicating that radiative cooling governs the entropy scale that sets the core radius of the intracluster medium. Entropy measured at the radius 0.1 r_200 scales as T^2/3, in accord with cooling-threshold models for the regulation of core entropy. Cooling of baryons to form galaxies is likely to lead to feedback, and the signature of feedback may appear farther out in the cluster. Entropy measured at the radius r_500 …
We report the initial results of a deep imaging survey of galaxy clusters. The primary goals of this survey are to quantify the amount of intracluster light as a function of cluster properties, and to quantify the frequency of tidal debris. We outline the techniques needed to perform such a survey, and we report findings for the first two galaxy clusters in the survey: Abell 1413, and MKW 7 . These clusters vary greatly in richness and structure. We show that our surface photometry reliably reaches to a surface brightness of μ_v = 26.5 mags per arcsec. We find that both clusters show clear exc…
Based on XMM-Newton observations of a sample of galaxy clusters, we have measured the elemental abundances (mainly O, Si, S, and Fe) and their spatial distributions in the intracluster medium (ICM). In the outer region of the ICM, observations of the O:Si:S:Fe ratio are consistent with the solar value, suggesting that the metals in the ICM were produced by a mix of supernovae (SNe) Ia and II. On the other hand, around the cD galaxy, the O/Fe ratios are about half of the solar value because of a central excess of the Fe abundance. An increase of the relative contribution from SNe Ia in the cD g…
A dynamical model including ram pressure stripping is applied to the strongly HI deficient Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4522. A carefully chosen model snapshot is compared with existing VLA HI observations. The model successfully reproduces the large-scale gas distribution and the velocity field. However it fails to reproduce the large observed HI linewidths in the extraplanar component, for which we give possible explanations. In a second step, we solve the induction equation on the velocity fields of the dynamical model and calculate the large scale magnetic field. Assuming a Gaussian distributio…
Globular cluster populations of supergiant elliptical galaxies are known to vary widely, from extremely populous systems like that of UGC 9799, the centrally dominant galaxy in Abell 2052, to globular-cluster-poor galaxies such as NGC 5629 in Abell 2666. Here we propose that these variations point strongly to the existence of a population of globular clusters that are not bound to individual galaxies, but rather move freely throughout the cores of clusters of galaxies. Such intracluster globular clusters may have originated as tidally stripped debris from galaxy interactions and mergers, or al…
Using a simple model of molecular cloud evolution, we have quantitatively estimated the change of star formation rate (SFR) of a disk galaxy falling radially into the potential well of a cluster of galaxies. The SFR is affected by the ram-pressure from the intracluster medium (ICM). As the galaxy approaches the cluster center, the SFR increases to twice the initial value, at most, in a cluster with high gas density and deep potential well, or with a central pressure of $\sim 10^{-2} cm^{-3} keV$ because the ram-pressure compresses the molecular gas of the galaxy. However, this increase does no…
We numerically investigate dynamical evolution of non-nucleated dwarf elliptical/spiral galaxies (dE) and nucleated ones (dE,Ns) in clusters of galaxies in order to understand the origin of intracluster stellar objects, such as intracluster stars (ICSs), GCs (ICGCs), and ``ultra-compact dwarf'' (UCDs) recently discovered by all-object spectroscopic survey centred on the Fornax cluster of galaxies. We find that the outer stellar components of a nucleated dwarf are removed by the strong tidal field of the cluster, whereas the nucleus manages to survive as a result of its initially compact nature…
We review the progress of research on intracluster planetary nebulae (IPN). In the past five years, hundreds of IPN candidates have been detected in the Virgo and Fornax galaxy clusters and searches are also underway in poorer galaxy groups. From the observations to date, and applying the known properties of extragalactic planetary nebulae, the intracluster light in Virgo and Fornax: 1) is significant, at least 20% of the total cluster stellar luminosity, 2) is elongated in Virgo along our line of sight, and 3) may derive from lower-luminosity galaxies, consistent with some models of intraclus…
We present deep observations taken with the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys of the central massive galaxy in a forming cluster at z=2.2. The galaxy hosting the powerful radio source MRC 1138-262 is associated with one of the most extensive merger systems known in the early universe. Our HST/ACS image shows many star-forming galaxies merging within a ~200 kpc region that emits both diffuse line emission and continuum in the rest-frame UV. Because this galaxy lives in an overdense environment, it represents a rare view of a brightest cluster galaxy in formation at z>2 which may serve as a testbe…
An important aspect of the radio emission from galaxy clusters is represented by the diffuse radio sources associated with the intracluster medium: radio halos, relics and mini-halos. The radio halos and relics are indicators of cluster mergers, whereas mini-halos are detected at the center of cooling core clusters. SKA will dramatically improve the knowledge of these sources, thanks to the detection of new objects, and to detailed studies of their spectra and polarized emission. SKA will also provide the opportunity to investigate the presence of halos produced by radiation scattered by a pow…
The X-ray cluster C0337-2522 at redshift $z=0.59$ hosts in its core a group of five elliptical galaxies. Using N-body simulations we show that a multiple merging event among the five galaxies is expected to take place in the next few Gyrs, forming a central brightest cluster galaxy. We also find indications that dynamical friction heating associated with this event is likely to modify the central slope of the cluster dark matter density profile.
Motivated by hydrodynamic simulations, we discuss the X-ray appearance of radio galaxies embedded in the intracluster medium (ICM) of a galaxy cluster. We distinguish three regimes. In the early life of a powerful source, the entire radio cocoon is expanding supersonically and hence drives a strong shock into the ICM. Eventually, the sides of the cocoon become subsonic and the ICM is disturbed by the sonic booms of the jet's working surface. In both of these regimes, X-ray observations would find an X-ray shell. In the strong shock regime, this shell will be hot and relatively thin. However, i…
In this paper we examine how well galaxies and intra-cluster gas trace the gravitational potential of clusters. Utilizing mass profiles derived from gravitational lensing and X-ray observations, coupled with measured galaxy velocities, we solve for the velocity anisotropy parameter using the anisotropic Jeans equation. This is done for five clusters, three at low redshift: A2199, A496 and A576 and two at high redshifts: A2390 and MS1358. With X-ray temperature profiles obtained from Chandra and ASCA/ROSAT data, we estimate the ratio of energy in the galaxies compared to the X-ray gas. We find …
We present the results from multiple surveys for intracluster planetary nebulae (IPNe) in nearby galaxy clusters and groups. We find that in the case of clusters, our observations imply: 1) the amount of intracluster starlight is significant, up to 20% of the total starlight, 2) the Virgo Cluster is elongated along our line of sight, and 3) the intracluster light is clustered on the sky, implying ongoing tidal stripping. In contrast, searches for IPNe in groups have found little or no intra-group population, implying there may be something in the cluster environment that significantly enhances…
We present an investigation of the X-ray absorption features predicted by hydrodynamic simulations of radio galaxies interacting with the intracluster medium (ICM) of their host galaxy clusters. We show how these absorption lines can be used as a new diagnostic for the radio-galaxy/ICM interactions. Such interactions have been observed in numerous systems by ROSAT, CHANDRA and XMM-NEWTON, and understanding them has implications for AGN feedback and galaxy formation. Starting from the hydrodynamic simulations of Reynolds, Heinz & Begelman, we calculate the properties of the highly ionized iron …
We present the Spitzer/IRS mid-infrared spectrum of the infrared-luminous (L_{IR}=4e11 L_sun) brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) in the X-ray-luminous cluster Z3146 (z=0.29). The spectrum shows strong aromatic emission features, indicating that the dominant source of the infrared luminosity is star formation. The most striking feature of the spectrum, however, is the exceptionally strong molecular hydrogen (H2) emission lines, which seem to be shock-excited. The line luminosities and inferred warm H2 gas mass (~1e10 M_sun) are 6 times larger than those of NGC 6240, the most H2-luminous galaxy at z…
We investigate the rich cluster Abell 2029 (z~0.08) using optical imaging and long-slit spectral observations of 52 disk galaxies distributed throughout the cluster field. No strong emission-line galaxies are present within ~400 kpc of the cluster center, a region largely dominated by the similarly-shaped X-ray and low surface brightness optical envelopes centered on the giant cD galaxy. However, two-thirds of the galaxies observed outside the cluster core exhibit line emission. H-alpha rotation curves of 14 cluster members are used in conjunction with a deep I band image to study the environm…
We investigate the metal enrichment of the intracluster medium (ICM) in the framework of hierarchical models of galaxy formation. We calculate the formation and evolution of galaxies and clusters using a semi-analytical model which includes the effects of flows of gas and metals both into and out of galaxies. For the first time in a semi-analytical model, we calculate the production of both alpha and iron-peak elements based on theoretical models for the lifetimes and ejecta of type Ia and type II supernovae (SNe Ia and SNe II). It is essential to include the long lifetimes of the SNIa progeni…
We model the surface brightness profiles of a sample of 119 Abell Brightest Cluster Galaxies (BCG), finding a generalised deVaucouleurs R^{1/n} law, where n is a free parameter, to be appropriate. Departures from the R^{1/4} law are shown to be a real feature of galaxy profiles, not due to observational errors or coupling of n with the other model parameters. BCG typically have values of n greater than 4. The shape parameter n is shown to correlate with effective half-light radius, such that the larger BCG have larger values of n. This continues a trend noticed amongst ordinary elliptical gala…
We report the results of a detailed analysis of the temperature structure of the X-ray emitting plasma halo of M~87, the cD galaxy of the Virgo Cluster. Using the MEKAL model, the data provide strong indications that the intracluster medium has a single phase structure locally, except the regions associated to the radio structures. The deprojected spectrum at each radius is well fitted by a single temperature MEKAL model, except for the very central region ($<$ 2 arcmin) which seems to be affected by the jet and radio lobe structure. The temperature of the intracluster plasma is 1 keV at the c…
XMM-Newton observations of 19 galaxy clusters are used to measure the elemental abundances and their spatial distributions in the intracluster medium. The sample mainly consists of X-ray bright and relaxed clusters with a cD galaxy. Along with detailed Si, S and Fe radial abundance distributions within 300-700 kpc in radius, the O abundances are accurately derived in the central region of the clusters. The Fe abundance maxima towards the cluster center, possibly due to the metals from the cD galaxy, are spatially resolved. The Si and S abundances also exhibit central increases in general, resul…
To determine the relative contributions of galactic and intracluster stars to the enrichment of the intracluster medium (ICM), we present X-ray surface brightness, temperature, and Fe abundance profiles for a set of twelve galaxy clusters for which we have extensive optical photometry. Assuming a standard IMF and simple chemical evolution model scaled to match the present-day cluster early-type SN Ia rate, the stars in the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) plus the intracluster stars (ICS) generate 31^{+11}_{-9}%, on average, of the observed ICM Fe within r_{500} (~ 0.6 times r_{200}, the virial …
Current models of galaxy evolution suggest that feedback from active galactic nuclei is needed to explain the high-luminosity cutoff in the galaxy luminosity function. Exactly how an AGN outflow couples with the ambient medium and suppresses star formation remains poorly understood. However, we have recently uncovered an important clue to how that coupling might work. Observations of H-alpha emission and blue light from the universe's most luminous galaxies, which occupy the centers of galaxy clusters, show that star formation happens only if the minimum specific entropy of the intracluster ga…
The current status of our efforts to trace cosmic structure with 10^6 galaxies (2MASS), 10^3 galaxy clusters (NORAS II cluster survey), and precision measurements for 10^2 galaxy clusters (HIFLUGCS) is given. The latter is illustrated in more detail with results on the gas temperature and metal abundance structure for 10^0 cluster (A1644) obtained with XMM-Newton.
The Virgo and Fornax clusters of galaxies play central roles in determining the Hubble constant H_0. A powerful and direct way of establishing distances for elliptical galaxies is to use the luminosities of the brightest red-giant stars (the TRGB luminosity, at M_I = -4.2). Here we report the direct observation of the TRGB stars in a dwarf elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster. We find its distance to be 15.7 +- 1.5 Megaparsecs, from which we estimate a Hubble constant of H_0 = 77 +- 8 km/s/Mpc. Under the assumption of a low-density Universe with the simplest cosmology, the age of the Univers…
The Chandra X-ray Observatory was used to obtain a 190 ks image of three high redshift galaxy clusters in one observation. The results of our analysis of these data are reported for the two z > 1 clusters in this Lynx field, including the most distant known X-ray selected cluster. Spatially-extended X-ray emission was detected from both these clusters, indicating the presence of hot gas in their intracluster media. A fit to the X-ray spectrum of RX J0849+4452, at z=1.26, yields a temperature of kT = 5.8^{+2.8}_{-1.7} keV. Using this temperature and the assumption of an isothermal sphere, the t…
We investigate the broadband optical emission of diffuse intergalactic stars in galaxy clusters at z~0.25 by means of an image stacking technique. The images of 654 clusters, selected with the max-BCG algorithm from a subsample of the SDSS-Data Release 1 (DR1), have been stacked after masking all the sources detected down to very low S/N. The resulting images in the g, r and i bands provide reliable photometric data at the level of >=30 mag arcsec^-2 (r band), out to >~ 600 kpc from the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG). Our analysis shows that: i) the IntraCluster Light (ICL) is much more concen…
We have investigated the properties of the diffuse light in the Virgo cluster core region, based on the detection of intracluster planetary nebulae (PNe) in four fields. We eliminate the bias from misclassified faint continuum objects, using improved Monte Carlo simulations, and the contaminations by high redshift Ly$α$ galaxies, using the Ly$α$ luminosity function in blank fields. Recent spectroscopic observations confirm that our photometric PN samples are well-understood. We find that the diffuse stellar population in the Virgo core region is inhomogeneous on scales of 30'-90': there exist …
We have observed emission line objects located in a 0.26 deg^2 field in the M96 (Leo) group, coincident with the intergalactic HI cloud. The emission line objects were selected using the same procedure as used for the search for intracluster planetary nebulae in the Virgo cluster, and their m_5007 luminosity function has a bright cut-off ~1.2 magnitude fainter than for the PNLF associated with the elliptical galaxies in the M96 group. Therefore the vast majority of these emission line objects are compatible with not being intragroup planetary nebulae at the Leo group distance of 10 Mpc. Spectro…
The brightest galaxy in a dark matter halo is expected to reside at rest at the center of the halo. In this paper we test this `Central Galaxy Paradigm' using group catalogues extracted from the 2dFGRS and the SDSS. For each group we compute a parameter, R, defined as the difference between the velocity of the brightest group galaxy and the average velocity of the other group members (hereafter satellites), normalized by the unbiased estimator of the velocity dispersion of the satellite galaxies. Using detailed mock galaxy redshift surveys, we show that the central galaxy paradigm is inconsist…
We present deep optical imaging of the z=4.1 radio galaxy TN J1338--1942 obtained using the ACS on-board HST. The radio galaxy is known to reside within a large galaxy overdensity (both in physical extent and density contrast). There is good evidence that this `protocluster' region is the progenitor of a present-day rich galaxy cluster. TN J1338 is the dominant galaxy in the protocluster, in terms of size and luminosity and therefore seems destined to evolve into the brightest cluster galaxy. The high spatial-resolution ACS images reveal several kpc-scale features within and around the radio g…
We present the discovery of a 40 kpc H-alpha tail and at least 29 emission-line objects downstream of a star-forming galaxy ESO 137-001 in the rich, nearby cluster A3627. The galaxy is known to possess a dramatic 70 kpc X-ray tail. The detected H-alpha tail coincides positionally with the X-ray tail. The H-alpha emission in the galaxy is sharply truncated on the front and the sides near the nucleus, indicating significant ram pressure stripping. ESO 137-001 is thus the first cluster late-type galaxy known unambiguously with both an X-ray tail and an H-alpha tail. The emission-line objects are …
We present Chandra observations of the galaxy cluster A4059. We find strong evidence that the FR-I radio galaxy PKS 2354-35 at the center of A4059 is inflating cavities with radii ~20 kpc in the intracluster medium, similar to the situation seen in Perseus A and Hydra A. We also find evidence for interaction between the intracluster medium and PKS 2354-35 on small scales in the very center of the cluster. Arguments are presented suggesting that this radio galaxy has faded significantly in radio power (possibly from an FR-II state) over the past 10^8 yrs.
We have begun a program to search for supernovae and other transients in the fields of galaxy clusters with the 2.3m Bok Telescope on Kitt Peak. We present our automated photometric methods for data reduction, efficiency characterization, and initial spectroscopy. With this program, we aim to ultimately identify $\sim$25-35 cluster SN Ia ($\sim$10 of which will be intracluster, hostless events) and constrain the SN Ia rate associated with old, passive stellar populations. With these measurements we will constrain the relative contribution of hostless and hosted SN Ia to the metal enrichment of…
We present detailed comparisons of the intracluster medium (ICM) in cosmological Eulerian cluster simulations with deep Chandra observations of nearby relaxed clusters. To assess the impact of galaxy formation, we compare two sets of simulations, one performed in the non-radiative regime and another with radiative cooling and several physical processes critical to various aspects of galaxy formation: star formation, metal enrichment and stellar feedback. We show that the observed ICM properties outside cluster cores are well-reproduced in the simulations that include cooling and star formation…
We have searched for IR emission from the intracluster dust (ICD) in the galaxy cluster A2029. Weak signals of enhanced extended emission in the cluster are detected at both 24 and 70 micron. However, the signals are indistinguishable from the foreground fluctuations. The 24 versus 70 micron color map does not discriminate the dust emission in the cluster from the cirrus emission. After excluding the contamination from the point sources, we obtain upper limits for the extended ICD emission in A2029, 5 x 10^3 Jy/sr at 24 micron and 5 x 10^4 Jy/sr at 70 micron. The upper limits are generally con…
We investigated ram-pressure effects by an intracluster wind on an inner disk of spiral galaxies by a hydrodynamical simulation. Even if the wind is mild and not strong enough to strip the gas disk, the ram pressure disturbs orbits of the inter-arm gas significantly. This results in asymmetric dense molecular arms in the inner few kpc region of a galaxy. This mechanism would explain the asymmetric CO gas distributions in the central regions often observed in Virgo spirals.
The Coma cluster is the richest and most compact of the nearby clusters, yet there is growing evidence that its formation is still on-going. A sensitive probe of this evolution is the dynamics of intracluster stars, which are unbound from galaxies while the cluster forms, according to cosmological simulations. With a new multi-slit imaging spectroscopy technique pioneered at the 8.2 m Subaru telescope and FOCAS, we can now detect and measure the line-of-sight velocities of the intracluster planetary nebulae which are associated with the diffuse stellar population of stars, at 100 Mpc distance.…
We explore the detectability of bulk motions in the X-ray emitting intracluster medium (ICM) using a catalog of 1,836 mock Astro-E2 observations of simulated clusters of galaxies. We generate high resolution mock spectra for two observing strategies: a four-pointing mosaic and a single central pointing. Normalizing to 200 (400) photons in the iron K-alpha region for the mosaic (central) study, we fit Poisson realizations of each simulated spectrum to a velocity broadened isothermal plasma emission model. We confirm that the velocity characteristics (mean and dispersion) returned by the spectra…
We present an observation of the radio-galaxy 3C401 and the surrounding intracluster medium (ICM) of its host galaxy cluster by the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This luminous radio-galaxy is notable in that it has characteristics intermediate between the FRI and FRII morphologies. We clearly detect point-like emission coincident with the radio-core of 3C401, although the spatial resolution of even Chandra is only 2kpc at the distance of 3C401 (z=0.201) and so the possibility remains that this is a dense (and rapidly cooling) thermal gaseous core in the center of the ICM atmosphere. Intracluster planetary nebulae are a useful tracer of the evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters. We analyze our catalog of 318 intracluster planetary nebulae candidates found in 0.89 square degrees of the Virgo cluster. We give additional evidence for the great depth of the Virgo cluster's intracluster stellar population, which implies that the bulk of the intracluster stars come from late-type galaxies and dwarfs. We also provide evidence that the intracluster stars are clustered on the sky on arcminute scales, in agreement with tidal-stripping scenarios of intracluster star production. A…
