System heterogeneity in computation, communication, and memory can substantially limit synchronous decentralized learning, where each training round is constrained by resource-limited nodes. Existing approaches provide limited support for jointly determining node-specific model capacities from deployment resources. We propose RASA-DL, a resource-aware sub-network allocation framework that treats the maximum sub-network width assigned to each node as a deployment variable. RASA-DL combines offline hardware profiling of computation and memory costs with deployment-aware profiling of learning utility under heterogeneous decentralized training. Using these profiles together with node- and link-level resource information, we formulate deployment as a bottleneck-latency minimization problem subject to per-node memory constraints and a required aggregate learning utility. Exploiting the monotone feasibility of the latency threshold, RASA-DL efficiently identifies the deployment through a binary-search-based allocation procedure. Experiments under controlled resource heterogeneity demonstrate favorable accuracy--latency tradeoffs. Under the Moderate and Severe regimes, the minimum-latency operating point improves accuracy over the largest globally feasible uniform deployment by 2.80 and 2.43 percentage points, respectively, at the same modeled round latency. The advantage is further amplified under strong Non-IID data heterogeneity.
The DEPAS (Decentralized Probabilistic Auto-Scaling) algorithm assumes an overlay network of computing nodes where each node probabilistically decides to shut down, allocate one or more other nodes or do nothing. DEPAS was formulated, tested, and theoretically analyzed for the simplified case of homogenous systems. In this paper, we extend DEPAS to heterogeneous systems.
The demand for large-scale deep learning is increasing, and distributed training is the current mainstream solution. Ring AllReduce is widely used as a data parallel decentralized algorithm. However, in a heterogeneous environment, each worker calculates the same amount of data, so that there is a lot of waiting time loss among different workers, which makes the algorithm unable to adapt well to heterogeneous clusters. Resources are not used as they should be. In this paper, we design an implementation of static allocation algorithm. The dataset is artificially allocated to each worker, and sa…
In the last few years, distributed machine learning has been usually executed over heterogeneous networks such as a local area network within a multi-tenant cluster or a wide area network connecting data centers and edge clusters. In these heterogeneous networks, the link speeds among worker nodes vary significantly, making it challenging for state-of-the-art machine learning approaches to perform efficient training. Both centralized and decentralized training approaches suffer from low-speed links. In this paper, we propose a decentralized approach, namely NetMax, that enables worker nodes to…
Recently, coding has been a useful technique to mitigate the effect of stragglers in distributed computing. However, coding in this context has been mainly explored under the assumption of homogeneous workers, although the real-world computing clusters can be often composed of heterogeneous workers that have different computing capabilities. The uniform load allocation without the awareness of heterogeneity possibly causes a significant loss in latency. In this paper, we suggest the optimal load allocation for coded distributed computing with heterogeneous workers. Specifically, we focus on th…
As a Distributed Hash Table (DHT), Skip Graph routing overlays are exploited in several peer-to-peer (P2P) services, including P2P cloud storage. The fully decentralized replication algorithms that are applicable to the Skip Graph-based P2P cloud storage fail on improving the performance of the system with respect to both the availability of replicas as well as their response time. Additionally, they presume the system as homogeneous with respect to the nodes' latency distribution, availability behavior, bandwidth, or storage. In this paper, we propose Pyramid, which is the first fully decentr…
Users of cloud computing platforms pose different types of demands for multiple resources on servers (physical or virtual machines). Besides differences in their resource capacities, servers may be additionally heterogeneous in their ability to service users - certain users' tasks may only be serviced by a subset of the servers. We identify important shortcomings in existing multi-resource fair allocation mechanisms - Dominant Resource Fairness (DRF) and its follow up work - when used in such environments. We develop a new fair allocation mechanism called Per-Server Dominant-Share Fairness (PS…
In this paper, we develop a class of decentralized algorithms for solving a convex resource allocation problem in a network of $n$ agents, where the agent objectives are decoupled while the resource constraints are coupled. The agents communicate over a connected undirected graph, and they want to collaboratively determine a solution to the overall network problem, while each agent only communicates with its neighbors. We first study the connection between the decentralized resource allocation problem and the decentralized consensus optimization problem. Then, using a class of algorithms for s…
In modern heterogeneous MPSoCs, the management of shared memory resources is crucial in delivering end-to-end QoS. Previous frameworks have either focused on singular QoS targets or the allocation of partitionable resources among CPU applications at relatively slow timescales. However, heterogeneous MPSoCs typically require instant response from the memory system where most resources cannot be partitioned. Moreover, the health of different cores in a heterogeneous MPSoC is often measured by diverse performance objectives. In this work, we propose a Self-Aware Resource Allocation (SARA) framewo…
This work presents a decentralized allocation algorithm of safety-critical application on parallel computing architectures, where individual Computational Units can be affected by faults. The described method consists in representing the architecture by an abstract graph where each node represents a Computational Unit. Applications are also represented by the graph of Computational Units they require for execution. The problem is then to decide how to allocate Computational Units to applications to guarantee execution of the safety-critical application. The problem is formulated as an optimiza…
Auction has been used to allocate resources or tasks to processes, machines or other autonomous entities in distributed systems. When different bidders have different demands and valuations on different types of resources or tasks, the auction becomes a combinatorial auction (CA), for which finding an optimal auction result that maximizes total winning bid is NP-hard. Many time-efficient approximations to this problem work with a bid ranking function (BRF). However, existing approximations are all centralized and mostly for single-unit resource. In this paper, we propose the first decentralize…

Federated learning (FL), as a distributed machine learning paradigm, promotes personal privacy by local data processing at each client. However, relying on a centralized server for model aggregation, standard FL is vulnerable to server malfunctions, untrustworthy server, and external attacks. To address this issue, we propose a decentralized FL framework by integrating blockchain into FL, namely, blockchain assisted decentralized federated learning (BLADE-FL). In a round of the proposed BLADE-FL, each client broadcasts the trained model to other clients, aggregates its own model with received …
In this research we use a decentralized computing approach to allocate and schedule tasks on a massively distributed grid. Using emergent properties of multi-agent systems, the algorithm dynamically creates and dissociates clusters to serve the changing resource demands of a global task queue. The algorithm is compared to a standard First-in First-out (FIFO) scheduling algorithm. Experiments done on a simulator show that the distributed resource allocation protocol (dRAP) algorithm outperforms the FIFO scheduling algorithm on time to empty queue, average waiting time and CPU utilization. Such …
In decentralized machine learning, workers compute model updates on their local data. Because the workers only communicate with few neighbors without central coordination, these updates propagate progressively over the network. This paradigm enables distributed training on networks without all-to-all connectivity, helping to protect data privacy as well as to reduce the communication cost of distributed training in data centers. A key challenge, primarily in decentralized deep learning, remains the handling of differences between the workers' local data distributions. To tackle this challenge,…
Emerging distributed applications recently boosted the development of decentralized machine learning, especially in IoT and edge computing fields. In real-world scenarios, the common problems of non-convexity and data heterogeneity result in inefficiency, performance degradation, and development stagnation. The bulk of studies concentrates on one of the issues mentioned above without having a more general framework that has been proven optimal. To this end, we propose a unified paradigm called UMP, which comprises two algorithms, D-SUM and GT-DSUM, based on the momentum technique with decentra…

We study Byzantine collaborative learning, where $n$ nodes seek to collectively learn from each others' local data. The data distribution may vary from one node to another. No node is trusted, and $f < n$ nodes can behave arbitrarily. We prove that collaborative learning is equivalent to a new form of agreement, which we call averaging agreement. In this problem, nodes start each with an initial vector and seek to approximately agree on a common vector, which is close to the average of honest nodes' initial vectors. We present two asynchronous solutions to averaging agreement, each we prove op…
