Zero-shot text-to-speech (TTS) typically conditions on a short speech prompt, which conveys timbre but provides only limited evidence of a speaker's prosodic patterns. We formulate Long-Prompt Zero-Shot TTS, a task that uses long speech prompts at inference time to reproduce speaker-specific prosody without target-speaker fine-tuning. We introduce LP-TTS-Bench, a bilingual benchmark of 37 speakers with 63.95 prompt hours and 2,728 held-out test utterances. Beyond intelligibility and timbre similarity, LP-TTS-Bench evaluates timing, prominence, intonation, and model-based prosody metrics, enabling multidimensional evaluation of prosody reproduction. As a reference system, we develop LPTTS, whose hierarchical Long-Prompt Encoder compresses long speech prompts into a fixed number of continuous prosody vectors. Experiments show improvements in several prosodic dimensions over a short-prompt baseline, with overall gains as prompt duration increases up to approximately 10 minutes and saturation at longer durations.
This paper presents a speech BERT model to extract embedded prosody information in speech segments for improving the prosody of synthesized speech in neural text-to-speech (TTS). As a pre-trained model, it can learn prosody attributes from a large amount of speech data, which can utilize more data than the original training data used by the target TTS. The embedding is extracted from the previous segment of a fixed length in the proposed BERT. The extracted embedding is then used together with the mel-spectrogram to predict the following segment in the TTS decoder. Experimental results obtaine…
In this paper, we present CopyCat2 (CC2), a novel model capable of: a) synthesizing speech with different speaker identities, b) generating speech with expressive and contextually appropriate prosody, and c) transferring prosody at fine-grained level between any pair of seen speakers. We do this by activating distinct parts of the network for different tasks. We train our model using a novel approach to two-stage training. In Stage I, the model learns speaker-independent word-level prosody representations from speech which it uses for many-to-many fine-grained prosody transfer. In Stage II, we…

With the development of automatic speech recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) technique, it's intuitive to construct a voice conversion system by cascading an ASR and TTS system. In this paper, we present a ASR-TTS method for voice conversion, which used iFLYTEK ASR engine to transcribe the source speech into text and a Transformer TTS model with WaveNet vocoder to synthesize the converted speech from the decoded text. For the TTS model, we proposed to use a prosody code to describe the prosody information other than text and speaker information contained in speech. A prosody e…

Prosody modeling is an essential component in modern text-to-speech (TTS) frameworks. By explicitly providing prosody features to the TTS model, the style of synthesized utterances can thus be controlled. However, predicting natural and reasonable prosody at inference time is challenging. In this work, we analyzed the behavior of non-autoregressive TTS models under different prosody-modeling settings and proposed a hierarchical architecture, in which the prediction of phoneme-level prosody features are conditioned on the word-level prosody features. The proposed method outperforms other compet…

In voice conversion (VC), an approach showing promising results in the latest voice conversion challenge (VCC) 2020 is to first use an automatic speech recognition (ASR) model to transcribe the source speech into the underlying linguistic contents; these are then used as input by a text-to-speech (TTS) system to generate the converted speech. Such a paradigm, referred to as ASR+TTS, overlooks the modeling of prosody, which plays an important role in speech naturalness and conversion similarity. Although some researchers have considered transferring prosodic clues from the source speech, there …
The cloning of a speaker's voice using an untranscribed reference sample is one of the great advances of modern neural text-to-speech (TTS) methods. Approaches for mimicking the prosody of a transcribed reference audio have also been proposed recently. In this work, we bring these two tasks together for the first time through utterance level normalization in conjunction with an utterance level speaker embedding. We further introduce a lightweight aligner for extracting fine-grained prosodic features, that can be finetuned on individual samples within seconds. We show that it is possible to clo…
This paper proposes a hierarchical and multi-scale variational autoencoder-based non-autoregressive text-to-speech model (HiMuV-TTS) to generate natural speech with diverse speaking styles. Recent advances in non-autoregressive TTS (NAR-TTS) models have significantly improved the inference speed and robustness of synthesized speech. However, the diversity of speaking styles and naturalness are needed to be improved. To solve this problem, we propose the HiMuV-TTS model that first determines the global-scale prosody and then determines the local-scale prosody via conditioning on the global-scal…
Text-to-speech systems recently achieved almost indistinguishable quality from human speech. However, the prosody of those systems is generally flatter than natural speech, producing samples with low expressiveness. Disentanglement of speaker id and prosody is crucial in text-to-speech systems to improve on naturalness and produce more variable syntheses. This paper proposes a new neural text-to-speech model that approaches the disentanglement problem by conditioning a Tacotron2-like architecture on flow-normalized speaker embeddings, and by substituting the reference encoder with a new learne…

We propose a novel training strategy for Tacotron-based text-to-speech (TTS) system to improve the expressiveness of speech. One of the key challenges in prosody modeling is the lack of reference that makes explicit modeling difficult. The proposed technique doesn't require prosody annotations from training data. It doesn't attempt to model prosody explicitly either, but rather encodes the association between input text and its prosody styles using a Tacotron-based TTS framework. Our proposed idea marks a departure from the style token paradigm where prosody is explicitly modeled by a bank of …

We present a multi-speaker Japanese audiobook text-to-speech (TTS) system that leverages multimodal context information of preceding acoustic context and bilateral textual context to improve the prosody of synthetic speech. Previous work either uses unilateral or single-modality context, which does not fully represent the context information. The proposed method uses an acoustic context encoder and a textual context encoder to aggregate context information and feeds it to the TTS model, which enables the model to predict context-dependent prosody. We conducted comprehensive objective and subje…

Are end-to-end text-to-speech (TTS) models over-parametrized? To what extent can these models be pruned, and what happens to their synthesis capabilities? This work serves as a starting point to explore pruning both spectrogram prediction networks and vocoders. We thoroughly investigate the tradeoffs between sparsity and its subsequent effects on synthetic speech. Additionally, we explored several aspects of TTS pruning: amount of finetuning data versus sparsity, TTS-Augmentation to utilize unspoken text, and combining knowledge distillation and pruning. Our findings suggest that not only are …
Intonations play an important role in delivering the intention of a speaker. However, current end-to-end TTS systems often fail to model proper intonations. To alleviate this problem, we propose a novel, intuitive method to synthesize speech in different intonations using predefined intonation templates. Prior to TTS model training, speech data are grouped into intonation templates in an unsupervised manner. Two proposed modules are added to the end-to-end TTS framework: an intonation predictor and an intonation encoder. The intonation predictor recommends a suitable intonation template to the…
Expressive text-to-speech (TTS) has become a hot research topic recently, mainly focusing on modeling prosody in speech. Prosody modeling has several challenges: 1) the extracted pitch used in previous prosody modeling works have inevitable errors, which hurts the prosody modeling; 2) different attributes of prosody (e.g., pitch, duration and energy) are dependent on each other and produce the natural prosody together; and 3) due to high variability of prosody and the limited amount of high-quality data for TTS training, the distribution of prosody cannot be fully shaped. To tackle these issue…
Although word-level prosody modeling in neural text-to-speech (TTS) has been investigated in recent research for diverse speech synthesis, it is still challenging to control speech synthesis manually without a specific reference. This is largely due to lack of word-level prosody tags. In this work, we propose a novel approach for unsupervised word-level prosody tagging with two stages, where we first group the words into different types with a decision tree according to their phonetic content and then cluster the prosodies using GMM within each type of words separately. This design is based on…
Prosodic boundary plays an important role in text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) in terms of naturalness and readability. However, the acquisition of prosodic boundary labels relies on manual annotation, which is costly and time-consuming. In this paper, we propose to automatically extract prosodic boundary labels from text-audio data via a neural text-speech model with pre-trained audio encoders. This model is pre-trained on text and speech data separately and jointly fine-tuned on TTS data in a triplet format: {speech, text, prosody}. The experimental results on both automatic evaluation and huma…
One-shot voice cloning aims to transform speaker voice and speaking style in speech synthesized from a text-to-speech (TTS) system, where only a shot recording from the target reference speech can be used. Out-of-domain transfer is still a challenging task, and one important aspect that impacts the accuracy and similarity of synthetic speech is the conditional representations carrying speaker or style cues extracted from the limited references. In this paper, we present a novel one-shot voice cloning algorithm called Unet-TTS that has good generalization ability for unseen speakers and styles.…

Current end-to-end code-switching Text-to-Speech (TTS) can already generate high quality two languages speech in the same utterance with single speaker bilingual corpora. When the speakers of the bilingual corpora are different, the naturalness and consistency of the code-switching TTS will be poor. The cross-lingual embedding layers structure we proposed makes similar syllables in different languages relevant, thus improving the naturalness and consistency of generated speech. In the end-to-end code-switching TTS, there exists problem of prosody instability when synthesizing paragraph text. T…

Personalized TTS is an exciting and highly desired application that allows users to train their TTS voice using only a few recordings. However, TTS training typically requires many hours of recording and a large model, making it unsuitable for deployment on mobile devices. To overcome this limitation, related works typically require fine-tuning a pre-trained TTS model to preserve its ability to generate high-quality audio samples while adapting to the target speaker's voice. This process is commonly referred to as ``voice cloning.'' Although related works have achieved significant success in c…

Modelling prosody variation is critical for synthesizing natural and expressive speech in end-to-end text-to-speech (TTS) systems. In this paper, a cross-utterance conditional VAE (CUC-VAE) is proposed to estimate a posterior probability distribution of the latent prosody features for each phoneme by conditioning on acoustic features, speaker information, and text features obtained from both past and future sentences. At inference time, instead of the standard Gaussian distribution used by VAE, CUC-VAE allows sampling from an utterance-specific prior distribution conditioned on cross-utterance…

The task of few-shot style transfer for voice cloning in text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis aims at transferring speaking styles of an arbitrary source speaker to a target speaker's voice using very limited amount of neutral data. This is a very challenging task since the learning algorithm needs to deal with few-shot voice cloning and speaker-prosody disentanglement at the same time. Accelerating the adaptation process for a new target speaker is of importance in real-world applications, but even more challenging. In this paper, we approach to the hard fast few-shot style transfer for voice cloni…
Recent advances in Text-to-Speech (TTS) have improved quality and naturalness to near-human capabilities when considering isolated sentences. But something which is still lacking in order to achieve human-like communication is the dynamic variations and adaptability of human speech. This work attempts to solve the problem of achieving a more dynamic and natural intonation in TTS systems, particularly for stylistic speech such as the newscaster speaking style. We propose a novel embedding selection approach which exploits linguistic information, leveraging the speech variability present in the …
Learning accent from crowd-sourced data is a feasible way to achieve a target speaker TTS system that can synthesize accent speech. To this end, there are two challenging problems to be solved. First, direct use of the poor acoustic quality crowd-sourced data and the target speaker data in accent transfer will apparently lead to synthetic speech with degraded quality. To mitigate this problem, we take a bottleneck feature (BN) based TTS approach, in which TTS is decomposed into a Text-to-BN (T2BN) module to learn accent and a BN-to-Mel (BN2Mel) module to learn speaker timbre, where neural netw…
The end-to-end TTS, which can predict speech directly from a given sequence of graphemes or phonemes, has shown improved performance over the conventional TTS. However, its predicting capability is still limited by the acoustic/phonetic coverage of the training data, usually constrained by the training set size. To further improve the TTS quality in pronunciation, prosody and perceived naturalness, we propose to exploit the information embedded in a syntactically parsed tree where the inter-phrase/word information of a sentence is organized in a multilevel tree structure. Specifically, two key…

Machine-generated speech is characterized by its limited or unnatural emotional variation. Current text to speech systems generates speech with either a flat emotion, emotion selected from a predefined set, average variation learned from prosody sequences in training data or transferred from a source style. We propose a text to speech(TTS) system, where a user can choose the emotion of generated speech from a continuous and meaningful emotion space (Arousal-Valence space). The proposed TTS system can generate speech from the text in any speaker's style, with fine control of emotion. We show th…
Large-scale pre-trained language models have been shown to be helpful in improving the naturalness of text-to-speech (TTS) models by enabling them to produce more naturalistic prosodic patterns. However, these models are usually word-level or sup-phoneme-level and jointly trained with phonemes, making them inefficient for the downstream TTS task where only phonemes are needed. In this work, we propose a phoneme-level BERT (PL-BERT) with a pretext task of predicting the corresponding graphemes along with the regular masked phoneme predictions. Subjective evaluations show that our phoneme-level …

End-to-end text-to-speech synthesis (TTS), which generates speech sounds directly from strings of texts or phonemes, has improved the quality of speech synthesis over the conventional TTS. However, most previous studies have been evaluated based on subjective naturalness and have not objectively examined whether they can reproduce pitch patterns of phonological phenomena such as downstep, rhythmic boost, and initial lowering that reflect syntactic structures in Japanese. These phenomena can be linguistically explained by phonological constraints and the syntax$\unicode{x2013}$prosody mapping h…
