Robotic systems that must acquire information about a specific target often face severe occlusion from sur- rounding structures or from the target itself, such that a single camera viewpoint provides only partial information. Active perception must therefore select viewpoints that progressively reveal unobserved regions. However, conventional local next- best-view (NBV) methods typically select viewpoints according to their immediate utility, which can overlook views that provide limited information initially but enable more informative obser- vations from subsequent viewpoints. We formulated local target perception as a short-horizon sequential view-planning problem and proposed a Receding-Horizon Next-Best-View (RH-NBV) planner that evaluates candidate sequences of future viewpoints rather than isolated views. RH-NBV is evaluated on a UR5e manipulator with an eye-in-hand RGB-D camera in simulation as well as on physical robot against a gradient-based NBV planner, and random search, using a coffee mug and Stanford bunny under controlled occlusion and a tomato plant with natural self-occlusion. Under heavy occlusion, RH-NBV achieves substantially higher target information recovery, reaching 63.8% ROI coverage versus 34.2% and 85.5% occluded-surface recall versus 7.4% for the single-step NBV baselines on the most occluded mug configuration. A controlled horizon ablation shows that this improvement arises from multi-step reasoning rather than additional computation. RH-NBV provides the greatest benefit for strongly occluded targets, while myopic NBV remains competitive and substantially cheaper when visibility is less constrained.
Visual inertial odometry (VIO) is widely used for the state estimation of multicopters, but it may function poorly in environments with few visual features or in overly aggressive flights. In this work, we propose a perception-aware collision avoidance trajectory planner for multicopters, that may be used with any feature-based VIO algorithm. Our approach is able to fly the vehicle to a goal position at fast speed, avoiding obstacles in an unknown stationary environment while achieving good VIO state estimation accuracy. The proposed planner samples a group of minimum jerk trajectories and fin…
We present the design, implementation, and evaluation of RF-Grasp, a robotic system that can grasp fully-occluded objects in unknown and unstructured environments. Unlike prior systems that are constrained by the line-of-sight perception of vision and infrared sensors, RF-Grasp employs RF (Radio Frequency) perception to identify and locate target objects through occlusions, and perform efficient exploration and complex manipulation tasks in non-line-of-sight settings. RF-Grasp relies on an eye-in-hand camera and batteryless RFID tags attached to objects of interest. It introduces two main inno…
Motion planning at urban intersections that accounts for the situation context, handles occlusions, and deals with measurement and prediction uncertainty is a major challenge on the way to urban automated driving. In this work, we address this challenge with a sampling-based optimization approach. For this, we formulate an optimal control problem that optimizes for low risk and high passenger comfort. The risk is calculated on the basis of the perception information and the respective uncertainty using a risk model. The risk model combines set-based methods and probabilistic approaches. Thus, …
Dynamic objects have a significant impact on the robot's perception of the environment which degrades the performance of essential tasks such as localization and mapping. In this work, we address this problem by synthesizing plausible color, texture and geometry in regions occluded by dynamic objects. We propose the novel geometry-aware DynaFill architecture that follows a coarse-to-fine topology and incorporates our gated recurrent feedback mechanism to adaptively fuse information from previous timesteps. We optimize our architecture using adversarial training to synthesize fine realistic tex…

This work presents a step towards utilizing incrementally-improving symbolic perception knowledge of the robot's surroundings for provably correct reactive control synthesis applied to an autonomous driving problem. Combining abstract models of motion control and information gathering, we show that assume-guarantee specifications (a subclass of Linear Temporal Logic) can be used to define and resolve traffic rules for cautious planning. We propose a novel representation called symbolic refinement tree for perception that captures the incremental knowledge about the environment and embodies the…

When operating in unstructured environments such as warehouses, homes, and retail centers, robots are frequently required to interactively search for and retrieve specific objects from cluttered bins, shelves, or tables. Mechanical Search describes the class of tasks where the goal is to locate and extract a known target object. In this paper, we formalize Mechanical Search and study a version where distractor objects are heaped over the target object in a bin. The robot uses an RGBD perception system and control policies to iteratively select, parameterize, and perform one of 3 actions -- pus…

Robust perception systems are essential for autonomous vehicle safety. To navigate in a complex urban environment, it is necessary precise sensors with reliable data. The task of understanding the surroundings is hard by itself; for intelligent vehicles, it is even more critical due to the high speed in which the vehicle navigates. To successfully navigate in an urban environment, the perception system must quickly receive, process, and execute an action to guarantee both passenger and pedestrian safety. Stereo cameras collect environment information at many levels, e.g., depth, color, texture…
Development and evaluation of automated localisation and reconstruction of all fruits on tomato plants in a greenhouse based on multi-view perception and 3D multi-object tracking
Advances in LiDAR sensors provide rich 3D data that supports 3D scene understanding. However, due to occlusion and signal miss, LiDAR point clouds are in practice 2.5D as they cover only partial underlying shapes, which poses a fundamental challenge to 3D perception. To tackle the challenge, we present a novel LiDAR-based 3D object detection model, dubbed Behind the Curtain Detector (BtcDet), which learns the object shape priors and estimates the complete object shapes that are partially occluded (curtained) in point clouds. BtcDet first identifies the regions that are affected by occlusion an…
We consider the problem of learning the behavioral preferences of an expert engaged in a task from noisy and partially-observable demonstrations. This is motivated by real-world applications such as a line robot learning from observing a human worker, where some observations are occluded by environmental objects that cannot be removed. Furthermore, robotic perception tends to be imperfect and noisy. Previous techniques for inverse reinforcement learning (IRL) take the approach of either omitting the missing portions or inferring it as part of expectation-maximization, which tends to be slow an…
In this paper, we introduce the notion of Cooperative Perception Error Models (coPEMs) towards achieving an effective and efficient integration of V2X solutions within a virtual test environment. We focus our analysis on the occlusion problem in the (onboard) perception of Autonomous Vehicles (AV), which can manifest as misdetection errors on the occluded objects. Cooperative perception (CP) solutions based on Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communications aim to avoid such issues by cooperatively leveraging additional points of view for the world around the AV. This approach usually requires many…

Robot vision is greatly affected by occlusions, which poses challenges to autonomous systems. The robot itself may hide targets of interest from the camera, while it moves within the field of view, leading to failures in task execution. For example, if a target of interest is partially occluded by the robot, detecting and grasping it correctly, becomes very challenging. To solve this problem, we propose a computationally lightweight method to determine the areas that the robot occludes. For this purpose, we use the Unified Robot Description Format (URDF) to generate a virtual depth image of th…

As a flexible passive 3D sensing means, unsupervised learning of depth from monocular videos is becoming an important research topic. It utilizes the photometric errors between the target view and the synthesized views from its adjacent source views as the loss instead of the difference from the ground truth. Occlusion and scene dynamics in real-world scenes still adversely affect the learning, despite significant progress made recently. In this paper, we show that deliberately manipulating photometric errors can efficiently deal with these difficulties better. We first propose an outlier mask…
