We prove that, for every $c>0$, the image of the generalized Markov-Krein transform on probability measures with finite logarithmic moment is closed under classical additive convolution and under the Mellin convolution. This resolves the positivity conjecture for the additive high-temperature convolution, a one-parameter interpolation between classical and free convolution arising in random matrix theory and representation theory in the regime $N\to\infty, Nβ_N/2\to c$. Our proof relies on a convolution theorem for universally prestarlike functions.
This paper describes how one can use the well-known Bayesian prior to posterior analysis of the Dirichlet process, and less known results for the gamma process, to address the formidable problem of assessing the distribution of linear functionals of Dirichlet processes. In particular, in conjunction with a gamma identity, we show easily that a generalized Cauchy-Stieltjes transform of a linear functional of a Dirichlet process is equivalent to the Laplace functional of a class of, what we define as, beta-gamma processes. This represents a generalization of the Markov-Krein identity for mean fu…
We study a family of measures originating from the signatures of the irreducible components of representations of the unitary group, as the size of the group goes to infinity. Given a random signature $λ$ of length $N$ with counting measure $\mathbf{m}$, we obtain a random signature $μ$ of length $N-1$ through projection onto a unitary group of lower dimension. The signature $μ$ interlaces with the signature $λ$, and we record the data of $μ,λ$ in a random rectangular Young diagram $w$. We show that under a certain set of conditions on $λ$, both $\mathbf{m}$ and $w$ converge as $N\to\infty$. W…
We prove a concentration phenomenon on the empirical eigenvalue distribution (EED) of the principal submatrix in a random hermitian matrix whose distribution is invariant under unitary conjugacy; for example, this class includes GUE (Gaussian Unitary Ensemble) and Wishart matrices. More precisely, if the EED of the whole matrix converges to some deterministic probability measure $\mathfrak{m}$, then its fluctuation from the EED of the principal submatrix, after a rescaling, concentrates at the Rayleigh measure (in general, a Schwartz distribution) associated with $\mathfrak{m}$ by the Markov--…
We study the rank one Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber integral in the limit where $\frac{N β}{2} \to c $, called the high temperature regime and show that it can be used to construct a promising one-parameter interpolation, with parameter $c$ between the classical and the free convolution. This $c$-convolution has a simple interpretation in terms of another associated family of distribution indexed by $c$, called the Markov-Krein transform: the $c$-convolution of two distributions corresponds to the classical convolution of their Markov-Krein transforms. We derive first cumulants-moments relatio…
In this paper, we start by showing that the intertwining relationship between two minimal Markov semigroups acting on Hilbert spaces implies that any recurrent extensions, in the sense of Itô, of these semigroups satisfy the same intertwining identity. Under mild additional assumptions on the intertwining operator, we prove that the converse also holds. This connection, which relies on the representation of excursion quantities as developed by Fitzsimmons and Getoor, enables us to give an interesting probabilistic interpretation of intertwining relationships between Markov semigroups via excur…
About two dozens of exactly solvable Markov chains on one-dimensional finite and semi-infinite integer lattices are constructed in terms of convolutions of orthogonality measures of the Krawtchouk, Hahn, Meixner, Charlier, $q$-Hahn, $q$-Meixner and little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. By construction, the stationary probability distributions, the complete sets of eigenvalues and eigenvectors are provided by the polynomials and the orthogonality measures. An interesting property possessed by these stationary probability distributions, called `convolutional self-similarity,' is demonstrated.
This paper is devoted to the analysis of the finite-dimensional distributions and asymptotic behavior of extremal Markov processes connected to the Kendall convolution. In particular, based on its stochastic representation, we provide general formula for finite dimensional distributions of the random walk driven by the Kendall convolution for a large class of step size distributions. Moreover, we prove limit theorems for random walks and connected continuous time stochastic process.
The paper deals with fluctuations of Kendall random walks, which are extremal Markov chains and iterated integral transforms with the Williamson kernel $Ψ(t) = \left(1-|t|^α\right)_+$, $α>0$. We obtain the joint distribution of the first ascending ladder epoch and height over any level $a \geq 0$ and distribution of maximum and minimum for these extremal Markovian sequences solving recursive integral equations. We show that distribution of the first crossing time of level $a \geq0$ is a mixture of geometric and negative binomial distributions. The Williamson transform is the main tool for cons…
The paper deals with renewal theory for a class of extremal Markov sequences connected with the Kendall convolution. We consider here some particular cases of the Wold processes associated with generalized convolutions. We prove an analogue of the Fredholm theorem for all regular generalized convolutions algebras. Using regularly varying functions we prove a Blackwell theorem for renewal processes defined by Kendall random walks.
A general affine Markov semigroup is formulated as the convolution of a homogeneous one with a skew convolution semigroup. We provide some sufficient conditions for the regularities of the homogeneous affine semigroup and the skew convolution semigroup. The corresponding affine Markov process is constructed as the strong solution of a system of stochastic equations with non-Lipschitz coefficients and Poisson-type integrals over some random sets. Based on this characterization, it is proved that the affine process arises naturally in a limit theorem for the difference of a pair of reactant proc…
The classical Cramer-Lundberg model was the first attempt to describe the financial condition of the insurance company. The incomes were approximated by a steady stream of money, insurance payments were not limited and could take any value from zero to infinity. The society did not invest any part of its money, do not have any employees, shareholders or enterprise maintenance costs. There exists many modifications of the Cramer-Lundberg model which cover at least some of the problems described here, but usually they require insight into the internal financial policy of the insurance company. W…
We realize the Belinschi-Nica semigroup of homomorphisms as a free multiplicative subordination. This realization allows to define more general semigroups of homomorphisms with respect to free multiplicative convolution. For these semigroups we show that a differential equation holds, generalizing the complex Burgers equation. We give examples of free multiplicative subordination and find a relation to the Markov-Krein transform, Boolean stable laws and monotone stable laws. A similar idea works for additive subordination, and in particular we study the free additive subordination associated t…
In the last years, many authors studied a class of continuous time semi-Markov processes obtained by time-changing Markov processes by hitting times of independent subordinators. Such processes are governed by integro-differential convolution equations of generalized fractional type. The aim of this paper is to develop the discrete-time version of such a theory. We show that a class of discrete-time semi-Markov chains can be seen as time-changed Markov chains and we obtain governing convolution type equations. Such processes converge weakly to those in continuous time under suitable scaling li…
In the paper we consider a generalizations of the notion of Poisson process to the case when classical convolution is replaced by generalized convolution in the sense of K. Urbanik [16] following two classical definitions of Poisson process. First, for every generalized convolution $\diamond$ we define $\diamond$-generalized Poisson process type I as a Markov process with the $\diamond$-generalized Poisson distribution. Such processes have stationary independent increments in the sense of generalized convolution, but usually they do not live on $\mathbb{N}_0$. The $\diamond$-generalized Poisso…
Using two simple examples, the continuous-time random walk as well as a two state Markov chain, the relation between generalized anomalous relaxation equations and semi-Markov processes is illustrated. This relation is then used to discuss continuous-time random statistics in a general setting, for statistics of convolution-type. Two examples are presented in some detail: the sum statistic and the maximum statistic.
Every Markov-regular quantum Levy process on a multiplier C*-bialgebra is shown to be equivalent to one governed by a quantum stochastic differential equation, and the generating functionals of norm-continuous convolution semigroups on a multiplier C*-bialgebra are then completely characterised. These results are achieved by extending the theory of quantum Levy processes on a compact quantum group, and more generally quantum stochastic convolution cocycles on a C*-bialgebra, to locally compact quantum groups and multiplier C*-bialgebras. Strict extension results obtained by Kustermans, togethe…
Recently, Diaconis, Ram and I created Markov chains out of the coproduct-then-product operator on combinatorial Hopf algebras. These chains model the breaking and recombining of combinatorial objects. Our motivating example was the riffle-shuffling of a deck of cards, for which this Hopf algebra connection allowed explicit computation of all the eigenfunctions. The present note replaces in this construction the coproduct-then-product map with convolutions of projections to the graded subspaces, effectively allowing us to dictate the distribution of sizes of the pieces in the breaking step of t…
In this paper, we present a comprehensive theory of generalized and weak generalized convolutions, illustrate it by a large number of examples, and discuss the related infinitely divisible distributions. We consider Lévy and additive process with respect to generalized and weak generalized convolutions as certain Markov processes, and then study stochastic integrals with respect to such processes. We introduce the representability property of weak generalized convolutions. Under this property and the related weak summability, a stochastic integral with respect to random measures related to suc…
The paper deals with a new class of random walks strictly connected with the Pareto distribution. We consider stochastic processes in the sense of generalized convolution or weak generalized convolution following the idea given in [1]. The processes are Markov processes in the usual sense. Their structure is similar to perpetuity or autoregressive model. We prove theorem, which describes the magnitude of the fluctuations of random walks generated by generalized convolutions. We give a construction and basic properties of random walks with respect to the Kendall convolution. We show that they a…
We obtain general weak existence and stability results for stochastic convolution equations with jumps under mild regularity assumptions, allowing for non-Lipschitz coefficients and singular kernels. Our approach relies on weak convergence in $L^p$ spaces. The main tools are new a priori estimates on Sobolev-Slobodeckij norms of the solution, as well as a novel martingale problem that is equivalent to the original equation. This leads to generic approximation and stability theorems in the spirit of classical martingale problem theory. We also prove uniqueness and path regularity of solutions u…
A Markov operator $P$ on a probability space $(S,Σ,μ)$, with $μ$ invariant, is called {\it hyperbounded} if for some $1 \le p<q \le \infty$ it maps (continuously) $L^p$ into $L^q$. We deduce from a recent result of Glück that a hyperbounded $P$ is quasi-compact, hence uniformly ergodic, in all $L^r(S,μ)$, $1<r< \infty$. We prove, using a method similar to Foguel's, that a hyperbounded Markov operator has periodic behavior similar to that of Harris recurrent operators, and for the ergodic case obtain conditions for aperiodicity. Given a probability $ν$ on the unit circle, we prove that if the c…
A hidden Markov model is called observable if distinct initial laws give rise to distinct laws of the observation process. Observability implies stability of the nonlinear filter when the signal process is tight, but this need not be the case when the signal process is unstable. This paper introduces a stronger notion of uniform observability which guarantees stability of the nonlinear filter in the absence of stability assumptions on the signal. By developing certain uniform approximation properties of convolution operators, we subsequently demonstrate that the uniform observability condition…
We introduce affine Volterra processes, defined as solutions of certain stochastic convolution equations with affine coefficients. Classical affine diffusions constitute a special case, but affine Volterra processes are neither semimartingales, nor Markov processes in general. We provide explicit exponential-affine representations of the Fourier-Laplace functional in terms of the solution of an associated system of deterministic integral equations of convolution type, extending well-known formulas for classical affine diffusions. For specific state spaces, we prove existence, uniqueness, and i…
