Cooperative aerial manipulation is difficult under wind, payload motion, and noisy goal broadcasts because multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are coupled through a shared payload. We present CALM (Cooperative Aerial Learned Manipulation), a decentralized controller for aerial manipulators carrying a basket while tracking a moving ground robot. CALM combines a parameter-shared Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) policy, trained using Multi-Agent Proximal Policy Optimization (MAPPO), with goal estimation, per-UAV Extended State Observers (ESOs), basket-mass estimation, and anticipatory formation-yaw feedforward. The anticipatory formation-yaw feedforward uses estimated goal motion to rotate the formation before position error develops, reducing basket-yaw lag without adding net commanded force. A disturbance-conditioned critic supports centralized training while execution remains decentralized. Across held-out trajectories, CALM achieves lower mean position and orientation errors than all evaluated baselines, including the matched arm baseline (7.68 versus 10.95 cm and 3.3 versus 4.7$^\circ$), the cable-suspended realization, and two model-based controllers. Under unseen full-information-path degradation, CALM remains statistically comparable or superior to the arm baseline. Videos are available at https://petreric.github.io/CALM/.

This paper presents a novel decentralized interactive architecture for aerial and ground mobile robots cooperation. The aerial mobile robot is used to provide a global coverage during an area inspection, while the ground mobile robot is used to provide a local coverage of ground features. We include a human-in-the-loop to provide waypoints for the ground mobile robot to progress safely in the inspected area. The aerial mobile robot follows continuously the ground mobile robot in order to always keep it in its coverage view.

The collaboration of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has become a popular research topic for its practicability in multiple scenarios. The collaboration of multiple UAVs, which is also known as aerial swarm is a highly complex system, which still lacks a state-of-art decentralized relative state estimation method. In this paper, we present a novel fully decentralized visual-inertial-UWB fusion framework for relative state estimation and demonstrate the practicability by performing extensive aerial swarm flight experiments. The comparison result with ground truth data from the motion capture sy…

This article presents a unique framework for deploying decentralized and infrastructure-independent swarms of homogeneous aerial vehicles in the real world without explicit communication. This is a requirement in swarm research, which anticipates that global knowledge and communication will not scale well with the number of robots. The system architecture proposed in this article employs the UVDAR technique to directly perceive the local neighborhood for direct mutual localization of swarm members. The technique allows for decentralization and high scalability of swarm systems, such as can be …
Small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have generally little capacity to carry payloads. Through collaboration, the UAVs can increase their joint payload capacity and carry more significant loads. For maximum flexibility to dynamic and unstructured environments and task demands, we propose a fully decentralized control infrastructure based on a swarm-specific scripting language, Buzz. In this paper, we describe the control infrastructure and use it to compare two algorithms for collaborative transport: field potentials and spring-damper. We test the performance of our approach with a fleet of m…

Targets search and detection encompasses a variety of decision problems such as coverage, surveillance, search, observing and pursuit-evasion along with others. In this paper we develop a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) method to coordinate a group of aerial vehicles (drones) for the purpose of locating a set of static targets in an unknown area. To that end, we have designed a realistic drone simulator that replicates the dynamics and perturbations of a real experiment, including statistical inferences taken from experimental data for its modeling. Our reinforcement learning m…

Although the use of multiple Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) has great potential for fast autonomous exploration, it has received far too little attention. In this paper, we present RACER, a RApid Collaborative ExploRation approach using a fleet of decentralized UAVs. To effectively dispatch the UAVs, a pairwise interaction based on an online hgrid space decomposition is used. It ensures that all UAVs simultaneously explore distinct regions, using only asynchronous and limited communication. Further, we optimize the coverage paths of unknown space and balance the workloads partitioned to each …

In this paper, we address the vision-based detection and tracking problems of multiple aerial vehicles using a single camera and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) as well as the corresponding perception consensus problem (i.e., uniqueness and identical IDs across all observing agents). We design several vision-based decentralized Bayesian multi-tracking filtering strategies to resolve the association between the incoming unsorted measurements obtained by a visual detector algorithm and the tracked agents. We compare their accuracy in different operating conditions as well as their scalability ac…

Designing autonomous aerial robot team systems remains a grand challenge in robotics. Existing works in this field can be categorized as centralized and decentralized. Centralized methods suffer from scale dilemmas, while decentralized ones often lead to poor planning quality. In this paper, we propose an enhanced decentralized autonomous aerial robot team system with group planning. According to the spatial distribution of agents, the system dynamically divides the team into several groups and isolated agents. For conflicts within each group, we propose a novel coordination mechanism named gr…

Decentralized state estimation is one of the most fundamental components of autonomous aerial swarm systems in GPS-denied areas yet it still remains a highly challenging research topic. Omni-swarm, a decentralized omnidirectional visual-inertial-UWB state estimation system for aerial swarms, is proposed in this paper to address this research niche. To solve the issues of observability, complicated initialization, insufficient accuracy, and lack of global consistency, we introduce an omnidirectional perception front-end in Omni-swarm. It consists of stereo wide-FoV cameras and ultra-wideband se…

Cooperative pathfinding is a multi-agent path planning problem where a group of vehicles searches for a corresponding set of non-conflicting space-time trajectories. Many of the practical methods for centralized solving of cooperative pathfinding problems are based on the prioritized planning strategy. However, in some domains (e.g., multi-robot teams of unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous underwater vehicles, or unmanned ground vehicles) a decentralized approach may be more desirable than a centralized one due to communication limitations imposed by the domain and/or privacy concerns. In thi…

Multi-agent pursuit-evasion tasks involving intelligent targets are notoriously challenging coordination problems. In this paper, we investigate new ways to learn such coordinated behaviors of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) aimed at keeping track of multiple evasive targets. Within a Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) framework, we specifically propose a variant of the Multi-Agent Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (MADDPG) method. Our approach addresses multi-target pursuit-evasion scenarios within non-stationary and unknown environments with random obstacles. In addition, given the c…
We present a fully integrated autonomous multi- robot aerial system for finding and collecting moving and static objects with unknown locations. This task addresses multiple relevant problems in search and rescue (SAR) robotics such as multi-agent aerial exploration, object detection and tracking, and aerial gripping. Usually, the community tackles these problems individually but the integration into a working system generates extra complexity which is rarely addressed. We show that this task can be solved reliably using only simple components. Our decentralized system uses accurate global sta…
We present the first decentralized multi-copter flock that performs stable autonomous outdoor flight with up to 10 flying agents. By decentralized and autonomous we mean that all members navigate themselves based on the dynamic information received from other robots in the vicinity. We do not use central data processing or control; instead, all the necessary computations are carried out by miniature on-board computers. The only global information the system exploits is from GPS receivers, while the units use wireless modules to share this positional information with other flock members locally…

We propose a unified framework for coordinating Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarms operating under time-varying communication networks. Our framework builds on the concept of graphical games, which we argue provides a compelling paradigm to subsume the interaction structures found in networked UAV swarms thanks to the shared local neighborhood properties. We present a general-sum, factorizable payoff function for cooperative UAV swarms based on the aggregated local states and yield a Nash equilibrium for the stage games. Further, we propose a decomposition-based approach to solve stage-graph…
A flexible topological representation consisting of a two-layer graph structure built on-board an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) by continuously filling the free space of an occupancy map with intersecting spheres is proposed in this \paper{}. Most state-of-the-art planning methods find the shortest paths while keeping the UAV at a pre-defined distance from obstacles. Planning over the proposed structure reaches this pre-defined distance only when necessary, maintaining a safer distance otherwise, while also being orders of magnitude faster than other state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, we d…

Coordination in multi-agent systems is challenging for agile robots such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), where relative agent positions frequently change due to unconstrained movement. The problem is exacerbated through the individual take-off and landing of agents for battery recharging leading to a varying number of active agents throughout the whole mission. This work proposes autonomous hierarchical multi-level clustering (MLC), which forms a clustering hierarchy utilizing decentralized methods. Through periodic cluster maintenance executed by cluster-heads, stable multi-level clusteri…

This work investigates the problem of simultaneous tracking and jamming of a rogue drone in 3D space with a team of cooperative unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). We propose a decentralized estimation, decision and control framework in which a team of UAVs cooperate in order to a) optimally choose their mobility control actions that result in accurate target tracking and b) select the desired transmit power levels which cause uninterrupted radio jamming and thus ultimately disrupt the operation of the rogue drone. The proposed decision and control framework allows the UAVs to reconfigure themsel…
Multiple multirotor Micro Aerial Vehicles sharing the same airspace require a reliable and robust collision avoidance technique. In this paper we address the problem of multi-MAV reactive collision avoidance. A model-based controller is employed to achieve simultaneously reference trajectory tracking and collision avoidance. Moreover, we also account for the uncertainty of the state estimator and the other agents position and velocity uncertainties to achieve a higher degree of robustness. The proposed approach is decentralized, does not require collision-free reference trajectory and accounts…
The weight, space, and power limitations of small aerial vehicles often prevent the application of modern control techniques without significant model simplifications. Moreover, high-speed agile behavior, such as that exhibited in drone racing, make these simplified models too unreliable for safety-critical control. In this work, we introduce the concept of time-varying backup controllers (TBCs): user-specified maneuvers combined with backup controllers that generate reference trajectories which guarantee the safety of nonlinear systems. TBCs reduce conservatism when compared to traditional ba…

Multi-robot systems have begun to permeate into a variety of different fields, but collision-free navigation in a decentralized manner is still an arduous task. Typically, the navigation of high speed multi-robot systems demands replanning of trajectories to avoid collisions with one another. This paper presents an online replanning algorithm for trajectory optimization in labeled multi-robot scenarios. With reliable communication of states among robots, each robot predicts a smooth continuous-time trajectory for every other remaining robots. Based on the knowledge of these predicted trajector…

The proposed control law, which can be perceived as a modification of the three-dimensional constant bearing (CB) pursuit law, provides a means to allocate simultaneous attention to multiple entities. We investigate the behavior of the clo…
This paper addresses the motion planning problem for a team of aerial agents under high level goals. We propose a hybrid control strategy that guarantees the accomplishment of each agent's local goal specification, which is given as a temporal logic formula, while guaranteeing inter-agent collision avoidance. In particular, by defining 3-D spheres that bound the agents' volume, we extend previous work on decentralized navigation functions and propose control laws that navigate the agents among predefined regions of interest of the workspace while avoiding collision with each other. This allows…
