Traffic sign detection plays a vital role in intelligent transportation systems, supporting the safe operation of advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicles. Despite significant progress in real-time object detection, accurately identifying traffic signs under challenging conditions remains difficult. Variations in lighting, adverse weather, motion blur, and partial occlusion often reduce detection performance, especially for small or visually degraded signs where important spatial information can be lost. To address these challenges, we propose Squeeze-Aware-YOLO, a lightweight traffic sign detection framework that introduces a multi-branch bottleneck module combining convolutional kernels of different sizes with a Squeeze-and-Excitation mechanism to improve feature extraction and adaptive channel weighting. In addition, we integrate the Multi-Branch Auxiliary Feature Pyramid Network and Re-parameterized Heterogeneous Multi-Scale modules to strengthen multi-scale feature representation and feature fusion while preserving real-time inference efficiency for practical deployment. The proposed approach is evaluated on the Bangladeshi Traffic Sign Detection Dataset, the CSUST Chinese Traffic Sign Detection Benchmark 2021, and the German Traffic Sign Detection Benchmark, achieving mAP@0.5 scores of 74.7%, 79.4%, and 84.0%, respectively, while consistently outperforming recent state-of-the-art YOLO-based traffic sign detectors. These findings demonstrate that combining multi-scale receptive fields, channel attention, and enhanced feature fusion enables more accurate and robust traffic sign detection while maintaining the computational efficiency required for real-world deployment.

In a wide range of semantic segmentation tasks, fully convolutional neural networks (F-CNNs) have been successfully leveraged to achieve state-of-the-art performance. Architectural innovations of F-CNNs have mainly been on improving spatial encoding or network connectivity to aid gradient flow. In this article, we aim towards an alternate direction of recalibrating the learned feature maps adaptively; boosting meaningful features while suppressing weak ones. The recalibration is achieved by simple computational blocks that can be easily integrated in F-CNNs architectures. We draw our inspirati…

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully used for brain tumor segmentation, specifically, fully convolutional networks (FCNs). FCNs can segment a set of voxels at once, having a direct spatial correspondence between units in feature maps (FMs) at a given location and the corresponding classified voxels. In convolutional layers, FMs are merged to create new FMs, so, channel combination is crucial. However, not all FMs have the same relevance for a given class. Recently, in classification problems, Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) blocks have been proposed to re-calibrate FMs as a …

Fully convolutional neural networks (F-CNNs) have set the state-of-the-art in image segmentation for a plethora of applications. Architectural innovations within F-CNNs have mainly focused on improving spatial encoding or network connectivity to aid gradient flow. In this paper, we explore an alternate direction of recalibrating the feature maps adaptively, to boost meaningful features, while suppressing weak ones. We draw inspiration from the recently proposed squeeze & excitation (SE) module for channel recalibration of feature maps for image classification. Towards this end, we introduce th…
Keypoint-based methods are a relatively new paradigm in object detection, eliminating the need for anchor boxes and offering a simplified detection framework. Keypoint-based CornerNet achieves state of the art accuracy among single-stage detectors. However, this accuracy comes at high processing cost. In this work, we tackle the problem of efficient keypoint-based object detection and introduce CornerNet-Lite. CornerNet-Lite is a combination of two efficient variants of CornerNet: CornerNet-Saccade, which uses an attention mechanism to eliminate the need for exhaustively processing all pixels …

Fully Convolutional Networks have been achieving remarkable results in image semantic segmentation, while being efficient. Such efficiency results from the capability of segmenting several voxels in a single forward pass. So, there is a direct spatial correspondence between a unit in a feature map and the voxel in the same location. In a convolutional layer, the kernel spans over all channels and extracts information from them. We observe that linear recombination of feature maps by increasing the number of channels followed by compression may enhance their discriminative power. Moreover, not …

Following the advance of style transfer with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), the role of styles in CNNs has drawn growing attention from a broader perspective. In this paper, we aim to fully leverage the potential of styles to improve the performance of CNNs in general vision tasks. We propose a Style-based Recalibration Module (SRM), a simple yet effective architectural unit, which adaptively recalibrates intermediate feature maps by exploiting their styles. SRM first extracts the style information from each channel of the feature maps by style pooling, then estimates per-channel recali…
With the emergence of edge computing, there is an increasing need for running convolutional neural network based object detection on small form factor edge computing devices with limited compute and thermal budget for applications such as video surveillance. To address this problem, efficient object detection frameworks such as YOLO and SSD were proposed. However, SSD based object detection that uses VGG16 as backend network is insufficient to achieve real time speed on edge devices. To further improve the detection speed, the backend network is replaced by more efficient networks such as Sque…

Spatial and temporal features are two key and complementary information for human action recognition. In order to make full use of the intra-frame spatial characteristics and inter-frame temporal relationships, we propose the Squeeze-and-Excitation Long-term Recurrent Convolutional Networks (SE-LRCN) for human action recognition. The Squeeze and Excitation operations are used to implement the feature recalibration. In SE-LRCN, Squeeze-and-Excitation ResNet-34 (SE-ResNet-34) network is adopted to extract spatial features to enhance the dependencies and importance of feature channels of pixel gr…
Object detection has made great progress in the past few years along with the development of deep learning. However, most current object detection methods are resource hungry, which hinders their wide deployment to many resource restricted usages such as usages on always-on devices, battery-powered low-end devices, etc. This paper considers the resource and accuracy trade-off for resource-restricted usages during designing the whole object detection framework. Based on the deeply supervised object detection (DSOD) framework, we propose Tiny-DSOD dedicating to resource-restricted usages. Tiny-D…
Spatial and channel re-calibration have become powerful concepts in computer vision. Their ability to capture long-range dependencies is especially useful for those networks that extract local features, such as CNNs. While re-calibration has been widely studied for image analysis, it has not yet been used on shape representations. In this work, we introduce re-calibration modules on deep neural networks for 3D point clouds. We propose a set of re-calibration blocks that extend Squeeze and Excitation blocks and that can be added to any network for 3D point cloud analysis that builds a global de…

A wide range of applications in marine ecology extensively uses underwater cameras. Still, to efficiently process the vast amount of data generated, we need to develop tools that can automatically detect and recognize species captured on film. Classifying fish species from videos and images in natural environments can be challenging because of noise and variation in illumination and the surrounding habitat. In this paper, we propose a two-step deep learning approach for the detection and classification of temperate fishes without pre-filtering. The first step is to detect each single fish in a…

Prostate cancer is the most common malignant tumors in men but prostate Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) analysis remains challenging. Besides whole prostate gland segmentation, the capability to differentiate between the blurry boundary of the Central Gland (CG) and Peripheral Zone (PZ) can lead to differential diagnosis, since tumor's frequency and severity differ in these regions. To tackle the prostate zonal segmentation task, we propose a novel Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), called USE-Net, which incorporates Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) blocks into U-Net. Especially, the SE blocks ar…
Person search generally involves three important parts: person detection, feature extraction and identity comparison. However, person search integrating detection, extraction and comparison has the following drawbacks. Firstly, the accuracy of detection will affect the accuracy of comparison. Secondly, it is difficult to achieve real-time in real-world applications. To solve these problems, we propose a Multi-task Joint Framework for real-time person search (MJF), which optimizes the person detection, feature extraction and identity comparison respectively. For the person detection module, we …
