We investigate the emergence of zero-dimensional topological end states in nanoribbons described by the Qi-Wu-Zhang (QWZ) model and its extensions with longer-range couplings. While dimensional reduction from two to one dimension is often assumed to preserve the symmetry classification of the parent system, here an additional symmetry can emerge originating from the real-space geometry of the ribbon. This symmetry acts as a chiral symmetry, combining orbital and spatial transformations, and promotes the effective one-dimensional system from symmetry class D to class BDI. We demonstrate that the existence of such a symmetry depends both on the long and end termination of the ribbon and exhibits an even-odd effect with respect to ribbon width, revealing that the commonly studied rectangular ribbons constitute a special high-symmetry case. For the conventional QWZ model, we derive analytic expressions for the topological phase boundaries of finite-width nanoribbons and characterize the resulting hybridization-gap phases through ($\mathbb{Z}_2 $) and winding-number invariants. We further show that extended QWZ models with longer-range couplings support phases with multiple topological end states and higher winding numbers. These phases arise through distinct mechanisms, including the hybridization of multiple edge modes inherited from higher-Chern-number bulk phases. Our results demonstrate that both long and end termination can fundamentally alter the topological classification of confined Chern insulators, highlighting the interplay between crystalline geometry, emergent symmetries, and dimensional reduction.

We discover three-dimensional intertwined Weyl phases, by developing a theory to create topological phases. The theory is based on intertwining existing topological gapped and gapless phases protected by the same crystalline symmetry. The intertwined Weyl phases feature both unconventional Weyl semimetallic (monopole charge>1) and higher-order topological phases, and more importantly, their exotic intertwining. While the two phases are independently stabilized by the same symmetry, their intertwining results in the specific distribution of them in the bulk. The construction mechanism allows us…
Equilibrium topological phases are robust against weak static disorder but may break down in the strong disorder regime. Here we explore the stability of the quench-induced emergent dynamical topology in the presence of dynamical noise. We develop an analytic theory and show that for weak noise, the quantum dynamics induced by quenching an initial trivial phase to Chern insulating regime exhibits robust emergent topology on certain momentum subspaces called band inversion surfaces (BISs). The dynamical topology is protected by the minimal oscillation frequency over the BISs, mimicking a bulk g…
Using three-dimensional (3D) sonic crystals as acoustic higher-order topological insulators (HOTIs), we discover two-dimensional (2D) surface states described by spin-1 Dirac equations at the interfaces between the two sonic crystals with distinct topology but the same crystalline symmetry. We find that the Dirac mass can be tuned by the geometry of the two sonic crystals. The sign reversal of the Dirac mass reveals a surface topological transition where the surface states exhibit zero refractive index behavior. When the surface states are gapped, one-dimensional (1D) hinge states emerge due t…
Recently, the very first large-gap Kane-Mele quantum spin Hall insulator was predicted to be monolayer jacutingaite (Pt$_2$HgSe$_3$), a naturally-occurring exfoliable mineral discovered in Brazil in 2008. The stacking of quantum spin Hall monolayers into a van-der-Waals layered crystal typically leads to a (0;001) weak topological phase, which does not protect the existence of surface states on the (001) surface. Unexpectedly, recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments revealed the presence of surface states dispersing over large areas of the 001-surface Brillouin zone of jac…
Within the expanding field of non-Hermitian physics, non-Hermitian pumping has emerged as a key phenomenon, epitomized through the skin effect via extensive boundary mode accumulation modifying the conventional Bloch picture. Beyond redefining bulk-boundary correspondences, we show that non-Hermitian pumping induces an unprecedented type of spectral topology: it admits a classification in terms of graph topology, which is distinct from conventional topological classifications of the eigenstate or energy Riemann surface. Each topological class is characterized by a conformally invariant configu…
We report on quantum capacitance measurements of high quality, graphite- and hexagonal boron nitride encapsulated Bernal stacked trilayer graphene devices. At zero applied magnetic field, we observe a number of electron density- and electrical displacement-tuned features in the electronic compressibility associated with changes in Fermi surface topology. At high displacement field and low density, strong trigonal warping gives rise to emergent Dirac gullies centered near the corners of the hexagonal Brillouin and related by three fold rotation symmetry. At low magnetic fields of $B=1.25$~T, th…
Topological edge states are predicted to be responsible for the high efficient thermoelectric response of topological insulators, currently the best thermoelectric materials. However, to explain their figure of merit the coexistence of topological electrons, entropy and phonons can not be considered independently. In a background that puts together electrodynamics and topology, through an expression for the topological intrinsic field, we treat relativistic phonons within the topological surface showing their ability to modulate the Berry curvature of the bands and then playing a fundamental r…
The effects of competing orders, such as superconductivity and ferromagnetism, on a Fermi liquid are well established. A comprehensive understanding of such a competition in a metal whose Fermi surface has a non-trivial topology is yet to be achieved. Here, we address this question in a prototypical system: the 2D Rashba semimetal. We show that dominant superconductivity interplays with Rashba spin orbit interactions (SOI) in forming a novel intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) with gapless edge states of Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) quasiparticles. As in the case of itinerant ferromagnets, the…

Magnetic multilayers are promising tuneable systems for hosting magnetic skyrmions at/above room temperature. Revealing their intriguing switching mechanisms and associated inherent electrical responses are prerequisites for developing skyrmionic devices. In this work, we theoretically demonstrate the annihilation of single skyrmions occurring through a multilayer structure, which is mediated by hopping dynamics of topological hedgehog singularities known as Bloch points. The emerging intralayer dynamics of Bloch points are dominated by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and their propagat…
Two hundred years ago, André-Marie Ampère discovered that electric loops in which currents of electrons are generated by a penetrating magnetic field can interact with each other. Here we show that Ampère's observation can be transferred to the quantum realm of interactions between triangular plaquettes of spins on a lattice, where the electrical currents at the atomic scale are associated with a peculiar type of the orbital motion of electrons in response to the non-coplanarity of neighbouring spins playing the role of a magnetic field. The resulting topological orbital moment underlies the r…

We present a paradoxical finding that, in the vicinity of a topological phase transition in a quantum anomalous Hall system (Chern insulator), topology nearly always (except when the system obeys charge-conjugation symmetry) results in a significant extension of the edge-state structure beyond the minimal one required to satisfy the Chern numbers. The effect arises from the universal gapless linear-in-momentum Hamiltonian of the nodal semimetal describing the system right at the phase transition, whose form is enforced by the change of the Chern number. Its emergent approximate chiral symmetry…
We theoretically address spin chain analogs of the Kitaev quantum spin model on the honeycomb lattice. The emergent quantum spin liquid phases or Anderson resonating valence bond (RVB) states can be understood, as an effective model, in terms of p-wave superconductivity and Majorana fermions. We derive a generalized phase diagram for the two-leg ladder system with tunable interaction strengths between chains allowing us to vary the shape of the lattice (from square to honeycomb ribbon or brickwall ladder). We evaluate the winding number associated with possible emergent (topological) gapless m…
Bismuth-chalchogenides are model examples of three-dimensional topological insulators. Their ideal bulk-truncated surface hosts a single spin-helical surface state, which is the simplest possible surface electronic structure allowed by their non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topology. They are therefore widely regarded ideal templates to realize the predicted exotic phenomena and applications of this topological surface state. However, real surfaces of such compounds, even if kept in ultra-high vacuum, rapidly develop a much more complex electronic structure whose origin and properties have proved co…
The interplay of nonlinearity and topology results in many novel and emergent properties across a number of physical systems such as chiral magnets, nematic liquid crystals, Bose-Einstein condensates, photonics, high energy physics, etc. It also results in a wide variety of topological defects such as solitons, vortices, skyrmions, merons, hopfions, monopoles to name just a few. Interaction among and collision of these nontrivial defects itself is a topic of great interest. Curvature and underlying geometry also affect the shape, interaction and behavior of these defects. Such properties can b…
For many materials, a precise knowledge of their dispersion spectra is insufficient to predict their ordered phases and physical responses. Instead, these materials are classified by the geometrical and topological properties of their wavefunctions. A key challenge is to identify and implement experiments that probe or control these quantum properties. In this review, we describe recent progress in this direction, focusing on nonlinear electromagnetic responses that arise directly from quantum geometry and topology. We give an overview of the field by discussing new theoretical ideas, groundbr…
The raise of the symmetry breaking mechanism by Landau[1] is a landmark in the studies of phase transitions. The Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition[2-3] and the fractional quantum Hall effect[4], however, are believed to be induced by another mechanism: topology change. Despite rapid development of the theory of topological orders[5-7], a unified theoretical framework describing this new paradigm of phase transition and its relation to the Landau paradigm, is not seen. Here, we establish such a framework based on variational principle, and show that the critical condition for any second-orde…
We show theoretically that a heterostructure of monolayer FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ - a superconducting quantum spin Hall material - with a monolayer of FeTe - a bicollinear antiferromagnet - realizes a higher order topological superconductor phase characterized by emergent Majorana zero modes pinned to the sample corners. We provide a minimal effective model for this system, analyze the origin of higher order topology, and fully characterize the topological phase diagram. Despite the conventional s-wave pairing, we find rather surprising emergence of a novel topological nodal superconductor in the p…
A fragile topological insulator (FTI) can be viewed as an almost-atomic insulator, with emergent negative charges localized at certain real space points, even though the underlying lattice Hilbert space contains only positively charged states. Fragile topology in free fermion systems has been fruitfully studied using modern topological band theory. However, the concept is well defined even for strongly correlated systems, and fragile states that cannot be realized within free fermion band theory exist abundantly. In this work we propose a rather general parton construction for such correlation…
Topological materials featuring exotic band structures, unconventional current flow patterns, and emergent organizing principles offer attractive platforms for the development of next-generation transformative quantum electronic technologies. The family of MnBi2Te4 (Bi2Te3)n materials is naturally relevant in this context due to their nontrivial band topology, tunable magnetism, and recently discovered extraordinary quantum transport behaviors. Despite numerous pioneering studies, to date, the local magnetic properties of MnBi2Te4 (Bi2Te3)n remain an open question, hindering a comprehensive un…
Inspired by the newly emergent valleytronics, great interest has been attracted to the topological valley transport in classical metacrystals. The presence of nontrivial domain-wall states is interpreted with a concept of valley Chern number, which is well defined only in the limit of small bandgap. Here, we propose a new visual angle to track the intricate valley topology in classical systems. Benefiting from the controllability of our acoustic metacrystals, we construct Weyl points in synthetic three-dimensional momentum space through introducing an extra structural parameter (rotation angle…

We investigate a generic dynamical theory to characterize topological quantum phases by quantum quenches, and study the emergent topology of quantum dynamics when the quenches start from a deep or shallow trivial phase to topological regimes. Two dynamical schemes are examined: One is to characterize topological phases via quantum dynamics induced by a single quench along an arbitrary axis, and the other applies a sequence of quenches with respect to all (pseudo)spin axes. These two schemes are both built on the so-called dynamical bulk-surface correspondence, which shows that the $d$-dimensio…
