18 HST parallaxes for Galactic classical Cepheids are unified to establish a Gaia-independent IC1613 distance and evaluate metallicity effect determinations, since the Gaia zeropoint is debated. Recently proposed classical Cepheid metallicity corrections of $γ(W_{VI}) \simeq 0, -0.25, -0.50$ mag dex$^{-1}$ are benchmarked, and yield $μ_{0,{W_{VI}}} \simeq 24.39, 24.16, 23.93$ ($\pm0.07$). Larger corrections are disfavored relative to a weighted mean of IC1613 TRGB and TRGB/JAGB distances of $24.39^{+0.07}_{-0.04}$ (EDD) and $24.36\pm0.06$/$24.45\pm0.11$ (CCHP). A more expansive metallicity baseline is desirable to scrutinize smaller corrections (e.g., $γ(W_{VI}) \lesssim -0.1$ mag dex$^{-1}$), while concurrently acquiring additional non-Gaia parallaxes since published concerns exist regarding DR3 (e.g., critical long-period Cepheids S Vul, SV Vul).
We present the modeling tool we developed to incorporate multi-technique observations of Cepheids in a single pulsation model: the Spectro-Photo-Interferometry of Pulsating Stars (SPIPS). The combination of angular diameters from optical interferometry, radial velocities and photometry with the coming Gaia DR2 parallaxes of nearby Galactic Cepheids will soon enable us to calibrate the projection factor of the classical Parallax-of-Pulsation method. This will extend its applicability to Cepheids too distant for accurate Gaia parallax measurements, and allow us to precisely calibrate the Leavitt…
The mass of a Cepheid is a fundamental parameter for studying the pulsation and evolution of intermediate-mass stars. But determining this variable has been a long-standing problem for decades. Detecting the companions (by spectroscopy or imaging) is a difficult task because of the brightness of the Cepheids and the close orbit of the components. So most of the Cepheid masses are derived using stellar evolution or pulsation modeling, but they differ by 10-20%. Measurements of dynamical masses offer the unique opportunity to make progress in resolving this mass discrepancy. The first problem in…
We present new parallax measurements of 7 long-period (> 10 days) Milky Way Cepheids (SS CMa, XY Car, VY Car, VX Per, WZ Sgr, X Pup and S Vul) using astrometry from spatial scanning of WFC3 on HST. Observations were obtained at 6 month intervals over 4 years. The distances are 1.7--3.6 kpc with a mean precision of 45 microarcseconds and a best of 29 microarcseconds (SNR = 14). The accuracy of the parallaxes is demonstrated through independent analyses of >100 reference stars. This raises to 10 the number of long-period Cepheids with significant parallax measurements, 8 obtained from this progr…
We use 612 single stars with previously published trigonometric parallaxes placing them within 25 pc to evaluate parallaxes released in Gaia's first data release (DR1). We find that the Gaia parallaxes are, on average, $0.24 \pm 0.02$ mas smaller than the weighted mean trigonometric parallax values for these stars in the solar neighborhood. We also find that the offset changes with distance out to 100 pc, in the sense that the closer the star, the larger the offset. We find no systematic trends in the parallax offsets with stellar $V$ magnitude, $V-K$ color, or proper motion. We do find that t…
Classical Cepheids are the most important primary indicators for the extragalactic distance scale. Establishing the precise zero points of their Period-Luminosity and Period-Wesenheit (PL/PW) relations has profound consequences on the estimate of $\rm H_0$. Type II Cepheids are also important distance indicator and tracers of old stellar populations. The recent Data Release 2 (DR2) of the {\it Gaia} Spacecraft includes photometry and parallaxes for thousands of classical and type II cepheids. We aim at reviewing the classification of {\it Gaia} DR2 Cepheids and to derive precise PL/PW for Mage…
This paper uses the multi-epoch astrometry from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) to demonstrate a method to measure proper motions and trigonometric parallaxes with precisions of $\sim$4 mas yr$^{-1}$ and $\sim$7 mas, respectively, for low-mass stars and brown dwarfs. This method relies on WISE single exposures (Level 1b frames) and a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method. The limitations of Gaia in observing very low-mass stars and brown dwarfs are discussed, and it is shown that WISE will be able to measure astrometry past the 95% completeness limit and magnitude limit of Gaia (L, T,…
Classical Cepheids provide the foundation for the empirical extragalactic distance ladder. Milky Way Cepheids are the only stars in this class accessible to trigonometric parallax measurements. However, the parallaxes of Cepheids from the second Gaia data release (GDR2) are affected by systematics because of the absence of chromaticity correction, and occasionally by saturation. As a proxy for the parallaxes of 36 Galactic Cepheids, we adopt either the GDR2 parallaxes of their spatially resolved companions or the GDR2 parallax of their host open cluster. This novel approach allows us to bypass…
Classical variables like RR Lyrae, classical and Type-II Cepheids and Mira variables all follow period-luminosity relations that make them interesting as distance indicators. Especially the RR Lyrae and delta Cepheids are crucial in establishing the distance scale in the Universe, and all classes of variables can be used as tracers of galactic structure. I will present an overview of recent period-luminosity relations and review the work that has been done using the Gaia DR1 data so far, and discuss possibilities for the future
Featuring greatly improved astrometry and precise radial velocities (RVs), the second data release (DR2) from Gaia affords us a unique opportunity to test the validity of samples of stellar wide binaries. In a previous work, we presented a set of wide binaries identified in the joint Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution catalog. Here, we use DR2 to confirm the low contamination rate of this sample, thereby verifying the effectiveness of our algorithm for application to DR2 data.
Convection plays an essential role in the emerging intensity for many stars that will be observed by Gaia. Convective-related surface structures affect the shape, shift, and asymmetry of absorption lines, the phocentric and photometric variability causing bias in Gaia measurements. Regarding the importance of Gaia mission and its goals, it is mandatory to have the best models of the observed stars. 3D time-dependent hydrodynamical simulations of surface convection are crucial to model the photosphere of late type stars in a very realistic way. These simulations are an important tool to correct…
Gaia Data Release 1 contains parallaxes for more than 700 Galactic Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars, computed as part of the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS). We have used TGAS parallaxes, along with literature ($V, I, J, {K_\mathrm{s}}, W_1$) photometry and spectroscopy, to calibrate the zero point of the Period-Luminosity and Period-Wesenheit relations of classical and type II Cepheids, and the near-infrared Period-Luminosity, Period-Luminosity-Metallicity and optical Luminosity-Metallicity relations of RR Lyrae stars. In this contribution we briefly summarise results obtained by fitting th…
Context. The Gaia satellite will measure highly accurate absolute parallaxes of hundreds of millions of stars by comparing the parallactic displacements in the two fields of view of the optical instrument. The requirements on the stability of the 'basic angle' between the two fields are correspondingly strict, and possible variations (on the microarcsec level) are therefore monitored by an on-board metrology system. Nevertheless, since even very small periodic variations of the basic angle might cause a global offset of the measured parallaxes, it is important to find independent verification …
Using a sample of 81 galactic, detached eclipsing binary stars we investigated the global zero-point shift of their parallaxes with the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2) parallaxes. The stars in the sample lay in a distance range of 0.04-2 kpc from the Sun. The photometric parallaxes π_Phot of the eclipsing binaries were determined by applying a number of empirical surface brightness - color (SBC) relations calibrated on optical-infrared colors. For each SBC relation we calculated the individual differences dπ_i = (π_Gaia - π_Phot)_i and then we calculated unweighted and weighted means. As the sample …
Precise stellar masses and radii can be determined using asteroseismology, but their accuracy must be tested against independent estimates. Using radii derived from Gaia DR2 parallaxes, we test the accuracy of asteroseismic radii for a sample of 93 dwarfs based on both individual frequency fitting and the seismic scaling relations. Radii from frequency fitting are about 1 per cent smaller than Gaia radii on average; however, this difference may be explained by a negative bias of 30 $μ$as in the Gaia parallaxes. This indicates that the radii derived from frequency fitting are accurate to within…
We have examined the period-luminosity (P-L) relation for delta Scuti stars using Gaia DR2 parallaxes. We included 228 stars from the catalogue of Rodriguez et al. (2000), as well as 1124 stars observed in the four-year Kepler mission. For each star we considered the dominant pulsation period, and used DR2 parallaxes and extinction corrections to determine absolute V magnitudes. Many stars fall along a sequence in the P-L relation coinciding with fundamental-mode pulsation, while others pulsate in shorter-period overtones. The latter stars tend to have higher effective temperatures, consistent…
On the basis of recently computed nonlinear convective pulsation models of Galactic Cepheids, spanning wide ranges of input stellar parameters, we derive theoretical mass-dependent Period-Wesenheit relations in the Gaia bands, namely $G$, $G_{BP}$ and $G_{RP}$, that are found to be almost independent of the assumed efficiency of super-adiabatic convection. The application to a selected sub-sample of Gaia Data Release 2 Galactic Cepheids database allows us to derive mass-dependent estimates of their individual distances. By imposing their match with the astrometric values inferred from Gaia, we…
We present new absolute trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions for seven Pop II variable stars: five RR Lyr variables; RZ Cep, XZ Cyg, SU Dra, RR Lyr, UV Oct; and two type 2 Cepheids; VY Pyx and κ Pav. We obtained these results with astrometric data from Fine Guidance Sensors, white-light interfer- ometers on Hubble Space Telescope. We find absolute parallaxes in milliseconds of arc: RZ Cep, 2.12\pm0.16 mas; XZ Cyg, 1.67\pm0.17 mas; SU Dra, 1.42\pm0.16 mas; RR Lyr, 3.77\pm0.13 mas; UV Oct, 1.71\pm0.10 mas; VY Pyx, 6.44\pm0.23 mas; and κ Pav, 5.57\pm0.28 mas; an average σπ/π = 5.4%. With t…
The Gaia second Data Release (DR2) presents a first mapping of full-sky RR Lyrae stars and Cepheids observed by the spacecraft during the initial 22 months of science operations. The Specific Object Study (SOS) pipeline, developed to validate and fully characterise Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars (SOS Cep&RRL) observed by Gaia, has been presented in the documentation and papers accompanying the Gaia first Data Release. Here we describe how the SOS pipeline was modified to allow for processing the Gaia multiband (G, G_BP and G_RP) time series photometry of all-sky candidate variables and produce sp…
Through an innovative combination of multiple observing techniques and mod- eling, we are assembling a comprehensive understanding of the pulsation and close environment of Cepheids. We developed the SPIPS modeling tool that combines all observables (radial velocimetry, photometry, angular diameters from interferometry) to derive the relevant physical parameters of the star (effective temperature, infrared ex- cess, reddening,...) and the ratio of the distance and the projection factor d/p. We present the application of SPIPS to the long-period Cepheid RS Pup, for which we derive p = 1.25 +/- …
Classical Cepheids (CCs) are at the heart of the empirical extragalactic distance ladder. Milky Way CCs are the only stars of this class accessible to trigonometric parallax measurements. Until recently, the most accurate trigonometric parallaxes of Milky Way CCs were the HST/FGS measurements collected by Benedict et al. (2002, 2007) and HST/WFC3 measurements by Riess et al. (2018). Unfortunately, the second Gaia data release (GDR2) has not yet delivered reliable parallaxes for Galactic CCs, failing to replace the HST as the foundation of the Galactic calibrations of the Leavitt law. We aim at…
The second data release of the Gaia mission includes an advance catalog of variable stars. The classification of these stars are based on sparse photometry from the first 22 months of the mission. We set out to investigate the purity and completeness of the all-sky Gaia classification results with the help of the continuous light curves of the observed targets from the Kepler and K2 missions, focusing specifically on RR Lyrae and Cepheid pulsators, outside the Galactic Bulge region. We crossmatched the Gaia identifications with the observations collected by the Kepler space telescope. We inspe…

In the Gaia era, the membership analysis and parameter determination of open clusters (OCs) are more accurate. We performed a census of OC's classical Cepheids based on Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) and obtained a sample of 33 OC Cepheids fulfilling the constraints of the spatial position, proper motion, parallax and evolution state. 13 of 33 OC Cepheids are newly discovered. Among them, CM Sct is the first first-crossing Cepheids with direct evidence of evolution. DP Vel is likely a fourth- or fifth-crossing Cepheids. Based on independent distances from OCs, W_1-band period-luminosity rela…
We compare the parallaxes of stars from VLBI astrometry in the literature to those in the Gaia DR2 catalog. Our full sample contains young stellar objects, evolved AGB stars, pulsars and other radio stars. Excluding AGB stars, which show significant discrepancies between Gaia and VLBI parallaxes, and stars in binary systems, we obtain an average, systematic, parallax offset of $-75 \pm 29~μ$as for Gaia DR2, consistent with their estimate of a parallax zero-point between $-100$ and 0 $μ$as.
Context. The first release of astrometric data from Gaia will contain the mean stellar positions and magnitudes from the first year of observations, and proper motions from the combination of Gaia data with Hipparcos prior information (HTPM). Aims. We study the potential of using the positions from the Tycho-2 Catalogue as additional information for a joint solution with early Gaia data. We call this the Tycho-Gaia astrometric solution (TGAS). Methods. We adapt Gaia's Astrometric Global Iterative Solution (AGIS) to incorporate Tycho information, and use simulated Gaia observations to demonstra…
We present Gaia-DR2 astrometry of a sample of YSO candidates in Ophiuchus, Serpens Main and Serpens South/W40 in the Aquila Rift, which had been mainly identified by their infrared excess with Spitzer. We compare the Gaia-DR2 parallaxes against published and new parallaxes obtained from our Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) program GOBELINS. We obtain consistent results between Gaia and the VLBA for the mean parallaxes in each of the regions analyzed here. We see small offsets, when comparing mean values, of a few tens of micro-arcseconds in the parallaxes, which are either introduced by the Gai…
As primary anchors of the distance scale, Cepheid stars play a crucial role in our understanding of the distance scale of the Universe because of their period-luminosity relation. Determining precise and consistent parameters (radius, temperature, color excess, and projection factor) of Cepheid pulsating stars is therefore very important. With the high-precision parallaxes delivered by the early third Gaia data release, we aim to derive various parameters of Cepheid stars in order to calibrate the period-luminosity and period-radius relations and to investigate the relation of period to p-fact…
Previous analyses of various standard candles observed by the Gaia satellite have reported statistically significant systematics in the parallaxes that have improved from $\sim$250 $μ$as in the first data release (DR1) to 50--80 $μ$as in the second data release (DR2). Here we examine the parallaxes newly reported in the Gaia early third data release (EDR3) using the same sample of benchmark eclipsing binaries (EBs) we used to assess the DR1 and DR2 parallaxes. We find a mean offset of $-37\pm20$ $μ$as (Gaia$-$EB), which decreases to $-15\pm18$ $μ$as after applying the corrections recommended b…
We have developed a method to estimate surface gravity (log g) from light curves by measuring the granulation background, similar to the "flicker" method by Bastien et al. (2016) but working in the Fourier power spectrum. We calibrated the method using Kepler stars for which asteroseismology has been possible with short-cadence data, demonstrating a precision in log g of about 0.05 dex. We also derived a correction for white noise as a function of Kepler magnitude by measuring white noise directly from observations. We then applied the method to the same sample of long-cadence stars as Bastien…
We present a well-defined and characterized all-sky sample of classical Cepheids in the Milky Way, obtained by combining two time-domain all-sky surveys: Gaia DR2 (Gaia Collaboration et al. 2018) and ASAS-SN (Shappee et al. 2014). We first use parallax and variability information from Gaia to select ~30,000 bright (G<17) Cepheid candidates with M_K<-1. We then analyze their ASAS-SN V-band lightcurves, determining periods, and classifying the lightcurves using their Fourier parameters. This results in ~1900 likely Galactic Cepheids, which we estimate to be >90% complete and pure within our adop…
The latest Gaia Data Release 3 provides an opportunity to expand the census of Galactic open clusters harboring classical Cepheid variables, thereby bolstering the cosmic distance scale. A comprehensive analysis yielded a total of 50 classical Cepheids associated with 45 open clusters, of which 39 open cluster-classical Cepheid pairs are considered probable, with the remaining 11 pairs considered improbable but worth following up. Two previously identified clusters by us possibly host classical Cepheids (OC-0125/V1788 Cyg and OC-0675/OGLE-BLG-CEP-114). In addition, we identify 38 new open clus…
We present evidence for a spatially-dependent systematic error in the first data release of ${\it Gaia}$ parallaxes based on comparisons to asteroseismic parallaxes in the ${\it Kepler}$ field, and present a parametrized model of the angular dependence of these systematics. We report an error of $0.059^{+0.004}_{-0.004}$mas on scales of 0.3deg, which decreases for larger scales to become $0.011^{+0.006}_{-0.004}$mas at 8deg. This is consistent with the $\sim2\%$ zeropoint offset for the whole sample discussed by Huber et al., and is compatible with the effect predicted by the ${\it Gaia}$ team…
Using parallaxes from Gaia DR2, we estimate the distance to the globular clusters 47 Tuc and NGC 362, taking advantage of the background stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud and quasars to account for various parallax systematics. We found the parallax to be dependent on the Gaia DR2 G apparent magnitude for stars with $13<\textrm{G}<18$ , where brighter stars have a lower parallax zero point than fainter stars. The distance to 47 Tuc was found to be $4.45\pm0.01\pm0.12$ kpc, and for NGC 362 $8.54\pm0.20\pm0.44$ kpc with random and systematic errors listed respectively. This is the first time a…
We reprise the analysis of Stassun & Torres (2016), comparing the parallaxes of the eclipsing binaries reported in that paper to the parallaxes newly reported in the Gaia second data release (DR2). We find evidence for a systematic offset of $-82 \pm 33$ micro-arcseconds, in the sense of the Gaia parallaxes being too small, for brightnesses $(G \lesssim 12)$ and for distances (0.03--3 kpc) in the ranges spanned by the eclipsing binary sample. The offset does not appear to depend strongly on distance within this range, though there is marginal evidence that the offset increases (becomes slightl…
We present bolometric fluxes and angular diameters for over 1.6 million stars in the {\it Tycho-2} catalog, determined using previously-determined empirical color-temperature and color-flux relations. We vet these relations via full fits to the full broadband spectral energy distributions for a subset of benchmark stars, and perform quality checks against the large set of stars for which spectroscopically-determined parameters are available from LAMOST, RAVE, and/or APOGEE. We then estimate radii for the 355,502 {\it Tycho-2} stars in our sample whose \emph{Gaia} DR1 parallaxes are precise to …
Context. The Kepler space mission led to a large amount of high-precision time series of solar-like oscillators. Using a Bayesian analysis that combines asteroseismic techniques and additional ground-based observations, the mass, radius, luminosity, and distance of those stars can be estimated with good precision. This has given a new impetus to the research field of galactic archeology. Aims. The first data release of the Gaia space mission contains the TGAS catalog with parallax estimates for more than 2 million stars, including many of the Kepler targets. Our goal is to make a first proper …
The ratio of the first overtone (1O) / fundamental (F) periods of mixed-mode Cepheids that pulsate simultaneously in these two modes (F/1O) is metallicity-dependent. It can therefore be used to characterize the systems that host such variable stars. We want to take advantage of the F/1O double-mode Cepheids listed in the Gaia DR2 catalogue to derive the metallicity gradient in the Milky Way disk. The metallicity is derived from the ratio of the first overtone and fundamental periods provided by Gaia DR2 while the Gaia DR2 parallaxes are used to determine the Galactocentric distances of the sta…
Establishing the period--Wesenheit relation requires independent and accurate distance measurements of classical Cepheids (DCEPs). The precise distance provided by an associated open cluster independently calibrates the period--Wesenheit relation of DCEPs. 51 DCEPs associated with open clusters are compiled using the constraints of five-dimensional astrometric information. By directly using Gaia DR3 parallax, the period--Wesenheit relation in the Gaia $G$ band is calibrated as $W_G = (-3.06 \pm 0.11) \log P + (-2.96 \pm 0.10)$. Compared with the results derived by directly adopting the DCEP pa…
Recently, a deviation of the Gaia TGAS parallaxes from the asteroseismic ones for giants was found. We show that for parallaxes $\varpi<1.5$ mas it can be explained by a selection effect in favour of bright and luminous giants in the Tycho-2 and TGAS catalogues. Another explanation of this deviation seems to be valid for $\varpi>1.5$ mas based on the best extinction estimates: the deviation may be caused not by a bias of parallax, but by an underestimation of the extinction (and, consequently, an overestimation of the calculated absolute magnitude) in the asteroseismic results. We demonstrate …
Results of comparison of Gaia DR2 parallaxes with data derived from a combined analysis of 2MASS (Two Micron All-Sky Survey), SDSS (Sloan Digital Sky Survey), GALEX (Galaxy Evolution Explorer), and UKIDSS (UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey) surveys in four selected high-latitude $|b|>48^{\circ}$ sky areas are presented. It is shown that multicolor photometric data from large modern surveys can be used for parameterization of stars closer than 4400 pc and brighter than $g_{SDSS} = 19.^m6$, including estimation of parallax and interstellar extinction value. However, the stellar luminosity class sho…
The Gaia Data Release 1 (DR1) sample of white dwarf parallaxes is presented, including 6 directly observed degenerates and 46 white dwarfs in wide binaries. This data set is combined with spectroscopic atmospheric parameters to study the white dwarf mass-radius relationship (MRR). Gaia parallaxes and G magnitudes are used to derive model atmosphere dependent white dwarf radii, which can then be compared to the predictions of a theoretical MRR. We find a good agreement between Gaia DR1 parallaxes, published effective temperatures (Teff) and surface gravities (log g), and theoretical MRRs. As it…
AIMS: With our low-resolution spectroscopic observing program for selected blue proper motion stars, we tried to find new white dwarfs (WDs) in the solar neighbourhood. METHODS: We used the LSPM catalogue with a lower proper motion limit of 150mas/yr and the UCAC2 for proper motions down to about 90mas/yr. The LSPM and UCAC2 photometry was combined with Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) near-infrared (NIR) photometry. Targets selected according to their blue optical-to-NIR and NIR colours were observed mainly at Calar Alto. The spectra were classified by comparison with a large number of alrea…
In this paper we gauge the potentiality of Gaia in the distance scale calibration of planetary nebulae (PNe) by assessing the impact of DR1 parallaxes of central stars of Galactic PNe (CSPNe) against known physical relations. For selected PNe targets with state-of-the-art data on angular sizes and fluxes, we derive the distance-dependent parameters of the classical distance scales, i.e., physical radii and ionized masses, from DR1 parallaxes; we propagate the uncertainties in the estimated quantities and evaluate their statistical properties in the presence of large relative parallax errors; w…
Context. The multiplicity of classical Cepheids (CCs) and RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) is still imperfectly known, particularly for RRLs. Aims. In order to complement the close-in short orbital period systems presented in Paper I, our aim is to detect the wide, spatially resolved companions of the targets of our reference samples of Galactic CCs and RRLs. Methods. Angularly resolved common proper motion pairs were detected using a simple progressive selection algorithm to separate the most probable candidate companions from the unrelated field stars. Results. We found 27 resolved, high probability gr…
Precise measurement of the fundamental parameters of stellar systems, including mass and radius, depends critically on how well the stellar distances are known. Astrometry from space provides parallax measurements of unprecented accuracy, from which distances can be derived, initially from the Hipparcos mission, with further refinement of that analysis provided by van Leeuwen in 2007. The publication of the Gaia DR2 catalogue promises a dramatic improvement in the available data. We have recalculated the dynamical masses of a sample of 1 700 close visual binary stars using Gaia DR2 and compare…
We present new luminosity-metallicity (LZ; MV-[Fe/H] and MG-[Fe/H]) relations and, for the first time, empirical, Gaia three-band (G,GBP,GRP) period-Wesenheit-metallicity (PWZ) relations of RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) derived using a hierarchical Bayesian approach and new accurate parallaxes published for these variables in the Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3). In a previous study we obtained Bayesian hierarchically-derived LZ relations from a sample of about four hundred Milky Way field RRLs with G-band light curves and trigonometric parallaxes published in the Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2), using V me…
We present a new extended and detailed set of models for Classical Cepheid pulsators at solar chemical composition ($Z=0.02$, $Y=0.28$) based on a well tested nonlinear hydrodynamical approach. In order to model the possible dependence on crucial assumptions such as the Mass-Luminosity relation of central Helium burning intermediate-mass stars or the efficiency of superadiabatic convection, the model set was computed by varying not only the pulsation mode and the stellar mass but also the Mass-Luminosity relation and the mixing length parameter that is used to close the system of nonlinear hyd…
Classical Cepheids in open clusters are key ingredients for stellar population studies and the characterization of variable stars, as they are tracers of young and massive populations and of recent star formation episodes. Cluster Cepheids are of particular importance since they can be age dated by using the cluster's stellar population to obtain the Cepheid period-luminosity-age relation. In this contribution, we present the preliminary results of an all-sky search for classical Cepheids in Galactic open clusters by taking advantage of the unprecedented astrometric precision of the second dat…
We share the most up-to-date, carefully verified list of classical Cepheids residing in the Galaxy. Based on long-term OGLE experience in the field of variable stars, we have inspected candidates for Cepheids from surveys such as ASAS, ASAS-SN, ATLAS, Gaia, NSVS, VVV, WISE, ZTF, among others, and also known sources from the General Catalogue of Variable Stars. Only objects confirmed in the optical range as classical Cepheids are included in the list. We provide Gaia EDR3 identifications of the stars. Purity of the sample exceeds 97 per cent, while its completeness is of about 88 per cent down …
Parameters and abundances have been derived for 435 Cepheids based on an analysis of 1127 spectra. Results from five or more phases are available for 52 of the program stars. The latter set of stars span periods between 1.5 and 68 days. The parameters and abundances show excellent consistency across phase. For iron, the average range in the determined abundance is 0.11 from these 52 stars. For 163 stars with more than one phase available the average range is 0.07. The variation in effective temperature tracks well with phase, as does the total broadening velocity. The gravity and microturbulen…
We test the parallaxes reported in the Gaia first data release using the sample of eclipsing binaries with accurate, empirical distances from Stassun \& Torres (2016). We find an average offset of $-$0.25$\pm$0.05 mas in the sense of the Gaia parallaxes being too small (i.e., the distances too long). The offset does not depend strongly on obvious parameters such as color or brightness. However, we find with high confidence that the offset may depend on ecliptic latitude: the mean offset is $-$0.38$\pm$0.06 mas in the ecliptic north and $-$0.05$\pm$0.09 mas in the ecliptic south. The ecliptic l…
We present new accurate Period-Luminosity (PL) and Period-Wesenheit (PW) relations in the V,J,Ks bands based on a sample of more than 4500 Cepheids in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) whose photometry was obtained in the context of the VISTA Magellanic Clouds (VMC) Survey. The excellent precision of these data allows us to study the geometry of the LMC and to establish a solid baseline for extra-galactic distance scale studies. To calibrate the zero points of these PL/PW relations, we adopted Gaia Data Release 2 parallaxes for more than 2000 Milky Way Cepheids. The implications for the measure…
Classical Cepheids (DCEPs) are the most important standard candles in the extra-galactic distance scale thanks to the Period-Luminosity ($\rm PL$), Period-Luminosity-Color ($\rm PLC$) and Period-Wesenheit ($\rm PW$) relations that hold for these objects. The advent of the {\it Gaia} mission, and in particular the Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) provided accurate parallaxes to calibrate these relations. In order to fully exploit {\it Gaia} measurements, the zero point (ZP) of {\it Gaia} parallaxes should be determined with an accuracy of a few $\rm μas$. The individual ZP corrections provided by th…
We present a comparison of the Gaia DR1 samples of pulsating variable stars - Cepheids and RR Lyrae type - with the OGLE Collection of Variable Stars aiming at the characterization of the Gaia mission performance in the stellar variability domain. Out of 575 Cepheids and 2322 RR Lyrae candidates from the Gaia DR1 samples located in the OGLE footprint in the sky, 559 Cepheids and 2302 RR Lyrae stars are genuine pulsators of these types. The number of misclassified stars is low indicating reliable performance of the Gaia data pipeline. The completeness of the Gaia DR1 samples of Cepheids and RR …
We have conducted a search for open clusters in the vicinity of classical Galactic Cepheids based on high-quality astrometry from the third data release (DR3) of the ESA mission Gaia to improve the calibration of the Leavitt law (LL). Our approach requires no prior knowledge of existing clusters, allowing us to both detect new host clusters and cross-check previously reported associations. Our Gold sample consists of 34 Cepheids residing in 28 open clusters, including 27 fundamental mode and 7 overtone Cepheids. Three new bona fide cluster Cepheids are reported (V0378 Cen, ST Tau, and GH Lup) …
