Critical exceptional points (CEPs) are nonequilibrium critical points in open many-body systems at which multiple collective excitation modes coalesce. CEPs are known to amplify classical fluctuations, but their effect on genuinely \textit{quantum} fluctuations remains unclear. Here, we show that dissipative collective-spin systems hosting CEPs exhibit parametrically enhanced steady-state \textit{quantum} spin squeezing. Close to the CEP, the optimally squeezed variance scales as $|Z|$, whereas the anti-squeezed variance diverges as $|Z|^{-1}$, with $Z$ the dimensionless order parameter. Importantly, the anti-squeezed fluctuation direction asymptotically aligns with the coalescing eigenvector of the stability matrix, reflecting the defective nature of the CEP dynamics. These scalings are robust against dephasing channels generated by spin components orthogonal to the coalesced critical collective mode. Our results identify CEPs as a route to engineering steady-state anisotropic quantum fluctuations and correlations in driven-dissipative platforms.
We study the appearance of Exceptional Points in a hybrid system composed of a superconducting flux-qubit and an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy colour centres in diamond. We discuss the possibility of controlling the generation of Exceptional Points, by the analysis of the model space parameters. One of the characteristic features of the presence of Exceptional Points, it is the departure from the exponential decay behaviour of the observables as a function of time. We study the time evolution of different initial states, in the presence of the hybrid system, by computing the reduced density mat…
A particularly simple setup is introduced to study the influence of time-delayed coherent feedback on the optical squeezing properties of the degenerate parametric amplifier (DPA). The possibility for significantly enhanced squeezing is demonstrated both on resonance and in sidebands, at a reduced pump power compared to the case without feedback. We study a broad range of operating parameters and their influence on the characteristic squeezing of the system. A classical analysis of the system dynamics reveals the connection between the feedback-modified landscape of stability and enhanced sque…
We present a single-quadrature feedback scheme able to overcome the conventional 3 dB limit on parametric squeezing. The method is experimentally demonstrated in a micromechanical system based on a cantilever with a magnetic tip. The cantilever is detected at low temperature by a SQUID susceptometer, while parametric pumping is obtained by modulating the magnetic field gradient at twice the cantilever frequency. A maximum squeezing of 11.5 dB and 11.3 dB is observed, respectively in the response to a sinusoidal test signal and in the thermomechanical noise. The maximum squeezing factor is limi…
Using exponential quadratic operators, we present a general framework for studying the exact dynamics of system-bath interaction in which the Hamiltonian is described by the quadratic form of bosonic operators. To demonstrate the versatility of the approach, we study how the environment affects the squeezing of quadrature components of the system. We further propose that the squeezing can be enhanced when parity kicks are applied to the system.
We describe a new approach to spin squeezing based on a double-pass Faraday interaction between an optical probe and an optically dense atomic sample. A quantum eraser is used to remove residual spin-probe entanglement, thereby realizing a single-axis twisting unitary map on the collective spin. This interaction can be phase-matched, resulting in exponential enhancement of squeezing. In practice the scaling and peak squeezing depends on decoherence, technical loss, and noise. A simplified model indicates ~10 dB of squeezing should be achievable with current laboratory parameters.
We introduce and analyze a dispersive qubit readout scheme where two-mode squeezing is generated directly in the measurement cavities. The resulting suppression of noise enables fast, high- fidelity readout of naturally weakly coupled qubits, and the possibility to protect strongly coupled qubits from decoherence by weakening their coupling. Unlike other approaches exploiting squeezing, our setup avoids the difficult task of transporting and injecting with high fidelity an externally-generated squeezed state. Our setup is also surprisingly robust against unwanted non-QND backaction effects, as…
We study the quantum critical effect enhanced spin-nematic squeezing and quantum Fisher information (QFI) in the spin-1 dipolar atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that the quantum phase transitions can improve the squeezing and QFI in the nearby regime of critical point, and the Heisenberg-limited high-precision metrology can be obtained. The different properties of the ground squeezing and entanglement under even and odd number of atoms are further analyzed, by calculating the exact analytical expressions. We also demonstrate the squeezing and entanglement generated by the spin-mixing dy…
Unitary control of qudits can improve the collective spin squeezing of an atomic ensemble. Preparing the atoms in a state with large quantum fluctuations in magnetization strengthens the entangling Faraday interaction. The resulting increase in interatomic entanglement can be converted into metrologically useful spin squeezing. Further control can squeeze the internal atomic spin without compromising entanglement, providing an overall multiplicative factor in the collective squeezing. We model the effects of optical pumping and study the tradeoffs between enhanced entanglement and decoherence.…
We propose an efficient approach to generate the superposed macroscopically squeezed states with enhanced squeezing in a two-mode optomechanical system. This can be achieved by introducing a sinusoidal modulation to either the cavity frequencies or the coupling strengths between two cavity modes. The squeezement of the oscillator can be significantly enhanced to 12.16 dB with single photon, once the relative ratio of coupling strength is optimized under proper conditions. Further enhanced squeezing can be obtained by carefully adjusting the system parameters. In terms of the Wigner quasi-proba…
We investigate the generation of the entanglement in a cavity magnomechanical system, which consists of three modes: a magnon mode, a microwave cavity mode and a mechanical vibration mode, the couplings of the magnon-photon and the magnon-phonon are achieved by the magnetic dipole interaction and the magnetostrictive interaction, respectively. By introducing a squeezing of the magnon mode, the magnon-photon and the magnon-phonon entanglements are significantly enhanced compared with the case without inserting the magnon squeezing. We find that an optimal parameter of the squeezing exists, whic…
The realization of the strong coupling regime is requisite for implementing quantum information tasks. Here, a method for enhancing the atom-field coupling in highly dissipative coupled cavities is proposed. By introducing parametric squeezing into the primary cavity which is only virtually excited under specific parametric conditions, coupling enhancement between atom and auxiliary cavity is realized for proper squeezing parameters. This enables the system to be robust against large cavity decay and atomic spontaneous emission. The observation of vacuum Rabi oscillations show that the origina…
We theoretically demonstrate the enhanced and dephasing immune squeezing in the resonance fluorescence of a single quantum dot (QD) confined to a pillar-microcavity and driven by a continuous wave laser. We employ a formalism based on Polaron master equation theory for incorporating the influence of exciton-phonon coupling quite accurately in the dot-cavity system. We show a significant enhancement of squeezing due to cavity coupling of the QD as compared to that of an ideal single two-level system in free space. Particularly, we show a four-fold enhancement in squeezing as compared to that of…
The unconditionally squeezing of the collective spin of an atomic ensemble in a laser driven optical cavity (I. D. Leroux, M. H. Schleier-Smith, and V. Vuletic, Phys. Rev. Lett 104, 073602 (2010)) is studied and analyzed theoretically. Surprisingly, we find that the largely detuned driving laser can improve the scaling of cavity squeezing from $S^{-2/5}$ to $S^{-2/3}$, where S is the total atomic spin. Moreover, we also demonstrate that the experimental imperfection of photon scattering into free space can be efficiently suppressed by detuning.
We address binary phase-shift-keyed communication channels based on Gaussian states and prove that squeezing improves state discrimination at fixed energy of the channel, also in the presence of phase diffusion. We then assess performances of homodyne detection against the ultimate quantum limits to discrimination, and show that homodyning achieves optimality in large noise regime. Finally, we consider noise in the preparation of the seed signal (before phase encoding) and show that also in this case squeezing may improve state discrimination in realistic conditions.
We explore the phenomena of quadrature squeezing of photons in the Two-Photon Dicke Model under the mean-field approximation in the thermodynamic limit. The strength of photon squeezing is maximized in the region where the coupling strength is of the same order of magnitude as one of the fundamental frequency of the system. This particular region is termed as the unbounded region. The squeezing of the photonic quadratures can be observed only in the superradiant phase where the squeezing is well beyond the standard quantum limit both near the quantum critical point as well as the unbounded reg…
We determine the theoretical limits to squeezing-enhanced measurement sensitivity of mechanical motion in a cavity optomechanical system. The motion of a mechanical resonator is transduced onto quadrature fluctuations of a cavity optical field and a measurement is performed on the optical field exiting the cavity. We compare measurement sensitivities obtained with coherent probing and quantum-enhanced probing of the mechanical motion, i.e. the coherent probe field carries vacuum states and quadrature squeezed vacuum states at sideband frequencies, respectively. We find that quantum-enhanced pr…
A major challenge in quantum metrology is the generation of entangled states with macroscopic atom number. Here, we demonstrate experimentally that atomic squeezing generated via non-linear dynamics in Bose Einstein condensates, combined with suitable trap geometries, allows scaling to large ensemble sizes. We achieve a suppression of fluctuations by 5.3(5) dB for 12300 particles, which implies that similar squeezing can be achieved for more than 10$^7$ atoms. With this resource, we demonstrate quantum-enhanced magnetometry by swapping the squeezed state to magnetically sensitive hyperfine lev…
It is known that exp[i\lamda(Q_1P_1-i/2)] is a unitary single-mode squeezing operator, where Q_1,P_1 are the coordinate and momentum operators, respectively. In this paper we employ Dirac's coordinate representation to prove that the exponential operator S_{n}=Exp[i\lamda sum_{i=1}^{n}](Q_{i}P_{i+1}+Q_{i+1}P_{i}))], (Q_{n+1}=Q_1P_{n+1}=P_1), is a n-mode squeezing operator which enhances the standard squeezing. By virtue of the technique of integration within an ordered product of operators we derive S_{n}'s normally ordered expansion and obtain new n-mode squeezed vacuum states, its Wigner fun…
Absorption is usually expected to be detrimental to quantum coherence effects. However, the situation for complex absorption spectra has been little studied yet. We consider the resonance fluorescence of excitons in a semiconductor quantum well. The creation of excitons requires absorption of the incoming pump-laser light. Thus, the absorption spectrum of the medium acts as a spectral filter for the emitted light. Surprisingly, absorption can even improve quantum effects, as is demonstrated for the squeezing of the resonance fluorescence of the quantum-well system. This effect can be explained…
The emergence of parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry has greatly enriched our study of symmetry-enabled non-Hermitian physics, but the realization of quantum $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry faces an intrinsic issue of unavoidable symmetry-breaking Langevin noises. Here we construct a quantum pseudo-anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ (pseudo-$\mathcal{APT}$) symmetry in a two-mode bosonic system without involving Langevin noises. We show that the spontaneous pseudo-$\mathcal{APT}$ symmetry breaking leads to an exceptional point, across which there is a transition between different types of quantum squeezing dynamic…
We analyze a fiber-optic gyroscope design enhanced by the injection of quantum-optical squeezed vacuum into a fiber-based Sagnac interferometer. In the presence of fiber loss, we compute the maximum attainable enhancement over a classical, laser-driven fiber-optic gyroscope in terms of the angular velocity estimate variance from a homodyne measurement. We find a constant enhancement factor that depends on the degree of squeezing introduced into the system but has diminishing returns beyond $10$--$15$ dB of squeezing. Under a realistic constraint of fixed total fiber length, we show that segmen…

The sensitivity of classical Raman spectroscopy methods, such as Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) or Stimulated Raman spectroscopy (SRS), is ultimately limited by shot-noise from the stimulating fields. We present the complete theoretical analysis of a squeezing-enhanced version of Raman spectroscopy that overcomes the shot-noise limit of sensitivity with enhancement of the Raman signal and inherent background suppression, while remaining fully compatible with standard Raman spectroscopy methods. By incorporating the Raman sample between two phase-sensitive parametric amplifiers …
We report the demonstration of a magnetometer with noise-floor reduction below the shot-noise level. This magnetometer, based on a nonlinear magneto-optical rotation effect, is enhanced by the injection of a squeezed vacuum state into its input. The noise spectrum shows squeezed noise reduction of about 2 dB spanning from close to 100 Hz to several megahertz. We also report on the observation of two different regimes of operation of such a magnetometer: one in which the detection noise is limited by the quantum noise of the light probe only, and one in which we see additional noise originating…
It has been predicted and experimentally demonstrated that by injecting squeezed light into an optomechanical device it is possible to enhance the precision of a position measurement. Here, we present a fundamentally different approach where the squeezing is created directly inside the cavity by a nonlinear medium. Counterintuitively, the enhancement of the signal to noise ratio works by de-amplifying precisely the quadrature that is sensitive to the mechanical motion without losing quantum information. This enhancement works for systems with a weak optomechanical coupling and/or strong mechan…
We theoretically investigate the use of quantum non-demolition measurement to enhance the sensitivity of atom interferometry with Bose-condensed atoms. In particular, we are concerned with enhancing existing high-precision atom interferometry apparatuses, so restrict ourselves to dilute atomic samples, and the use of free-propagating light, or optical cavities in the weak-coupling regime. We find the optimum parameter regime that balances between spin squeezing and atomic loss, and find that significant improvements in sensitivity are possible. Finally, we consider the use of squeezed light, a…
Quantum transduction is an essential ingredient in scaling up distributed quantum architecture and is actively pursued based on various physical platforms. However, demonstrating a transducer with positive quantum capacity is still practically challenging. In this work, we discuss a new approach to relax the impedance matching condition to half impedance matching condition, which is achieved by introducing two-photon drive in the electro-optic transducer. We show the quantum transduction capacity can be enhanced and can be understood in a simple interference picture with the help of Bloch-Mess…
By extending the usual two-mode squeezing operator $S_{2}=\exp [ iλ(Q_{1}P_{2}+Q_{2}P_{1}) ] $ to the three-mode squeezing operator $S_{3}=\exp {iλ[ Q_{1}(P_{2}+P_{3}) +Q_{2}(P_{1}+P_{3}) +Q_{3}(P_{1}+P_{2}) ]} $, we obtain the corresponding three-mode squeezed coherent state. The state's higher-order properties, such as higher-order squeezing and higher-order sub-Possonian photon statistics, are investigated. It is found that the new squeezed state not only can be squeezed to all even orders but also exhibits squeezing enhancement comparing with the usual cases. In addition, we examine the vi…
Narrow-band intensity-difference squeezing beams have important applications in quantum metrology and gravitational wave detection. The best way to generate narrow-band intensity-difference squeezing is to employ parametrically-amplified four-wave mixing process in high-gain atomic media. Such IDS can be further enhanced by cascading multiple parametrically-amplified four-wave mixing processes in separate atomic media. The complicated experimental setup, added losses and required high-power pump laser with the increase of number of stages can limit the wide uses of such scheme in practical app…
Interferometric gravitational wave detectors are expected to be limited by shot noise at some frequencies. We experimentally demonstrate that a power recycled Michelson with squeezed light injected into the dark port can overcome this limit. An improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of 2.3dB is measured and locked stably for long periods of time. The configuration, control and signal readout of our experiment are compatible with current gravitational wave detector designs. We consider the application of our system to long baseline interferometer designs such as LIGO.
We consider the superpositions of spin coherent states and study the coherence properties and spin squeezing in these states. The spin squeezing is examined using a new version of spectroscopic squeezing criteria. The results show that the antibuching effect can be enhanced and spin squeezing can be generated in the superpositions of two spin coherent states.
Squeezing currently represents the leading strategy for quantum enhanced precision measurements of a single parameter in a variety of continuous- and discrete-variable settings and technological applications. However, many important physical problems including imaging and field sensing require the simultaneous measurement of multiple unknown parameters. The development of multiparameter quantum metrology is yet hindered by the intrinsic difficulty in finding saturable sensitivity bounds and feasible estimation strategies. Here, we derive the general operational concept of multiparameter squeez…
