We present a broadband spectral and timing study of the black hole candidate MAXI J1803-298 during its 2021 outburst using simultaneous observations from NICER, NuSTAR, and Insight-HXMT. The combined multi-instrument coverage allows us to investigate the evolution of low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) together with the spectral properties of the source over a wide energy range. During the early observation epoch, the source exhibits a hard or hard-intermediate spectral state dominated by Comptonized emission with reflection features. Spectral modeling within the framework of the two-component advective flow (TCAF) model indicates the presence of a sub-Keplerian halo and a Keplerian disk with a shock located at 130 Schwarzschild radii, and provides an independent estimate of the black hole mass. A prominent LFQPO is detected during this epoch with a centroid frequency evolving from 0.35 Hz to 0.5 Hz and extending up to 100 keV. The energy-dependent fractional rms variability suggests that the modulation originates primarily from the Comptonizing inner accretion flow. In contrast, a later observation epoch shows a softer spectral state characterized by stronger disk emission and a steeper photon index, during which no LFQPO is detected. We also demonstrate that cospectral analysis effectively mitigates dead-time-induced distortions in NuSTAR timing studies, confirming the intrinsic nature of the detected variability. The combined spectral and timing results support a scenario in which LFQPOs in MAXI J1803-298 arise from the dynamically evolving inner accretion flow.
We study X-ray and soft gamma-ray spectra from the hard state of the accreting black-hole binary MAXI J1820+070. We perform analysis of joint spectra from HXMT, NuSTAR and INTEGRAL. We find an overall agreement between the spectra from all three satellites. Satisfactory fits to the data require substantial spectral complexity, with our models including two Comptonization regions and their associated disk reflection, a disk blackbody and a narrow Fe K$α$ line. Our fits confirm the presence of the truncation of the reflecting optically-thick disk at least at $>$10 gravitational radii. However, w…
The prolific thermonuclear X-ray bursts from the outburst of the newly discovered millisecond pulsar MAXI~J1816--195 observed by Insight-HXMT and NICER
We report the energy-resolved broadband timing analysis of the black hole X-ray transient MAXI J1631-479 during its 2019 outburst from February 11 to April 9, using data from the Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), which caught the source from its hard intermediate state to the soft state. Thanks to the large effective area of Insight-HXMT at high energies, we are able to present the energy dependence of fast variability up to ~100 keV. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) with frequency varying between 4.9 Hz and 6.5 Hz are observed in the 1-100 keV energy band. While…
We present the X-ray timing results of the new black hole candidate (BHC) MAXI J1535-571 during its 2017 outburst from Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (\emph{Insight}-HXMT) observations taken from 2017 September 6 to 23. Following the definitions given by \citet{Belloni2010}, we find that the source exhibits state transitions from Low/Hard state (LHS) to Hard Intermediate state (HIMS) and eventually to Soft Intermediate state (SIMS). Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are found in the intermediate states, which suggest different types of QPOs. With the large effective area of \emph{Insight}-HX…
In this paper, wavelet analysis is used to study spectral-timing properties of MAXI J1535-571 observed by Insight-HXMT. The low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are detected in nine observations. Based on wavelet analysis, the time intervals with QPO and non-QPO are isolated separately, and the corresponding spectra with QPO and non-QPO are analyzed. We find that the spectra with QPO (hereafter QPO spectra) are softer than those without QPO (hereafter non-QPO spectra) in the hard intermediate state (HIMS). While in the soft intermediate state (SIMS), the QPO spectra are slightly ha…
Here we present a detailed study of the broadband noise in the power density spectra of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 during the hard state of its 2018 outburst, using the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) observations. The broadband noise shows two main humps, which might separately correspond to variability from a variable disk and two Comptonization regions. We fitted the two humps with multiple Lorentzian functions and studied the energy-dependent properties of each component up to 100--150 keV and their evolution with spectral changes. The lowest frequency compon…
Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in black hole X-ray transients can appear when the source is in the low-hard and hard-intermediate states. The spectral-timing evolution of the type-C QPO in MAXI J1535-571 has been recently studied with Insight-HXMT. Here we fit simultaneously the time-averaged energy spectrum, using a relativistic reflection model, and the fractional rms and phase-lag spectra of the type-C QPOs, using a recently developed time-dependent Comptonization model when the source was in the intermediate state. We show, for the first time, that the time-dependent Comptonizat…

Insight-HXMT is the first Chinese X-ray astronomical mission. With a 1-250 keV bandpass, an energy resolution of 150 eV at 6 keV, and without being subject to pile-up distortions, it is suitable to study bright X-ray sources like Galactic black holes. In the present paper, we study Insight-HXMT observations of the X-ray binaries MAXI J1535-571 and 4U 1630-472 during their outbursts in 2017 and 2020, respectively. From the analysis of the reflection features, we are able to infer the black hole spin parameter in the two sources. For MAXI J1535-571, we find a spin parameter very close to 1, $a_*…
We present the observational results from a detailed timing analysis of the black hole candidate Swift J1658.2-4242 during its 2018 outburst with the observations of Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and AstroSat in 0.1-250keV. The evolution of intensity, hardness and integrated fractional root mean square (rms) observed by Insight-HXMT and NICER are presented in this paper. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed by NICER (0.8-3.5Hz) and Insight-HXMT (1-1.6Hz) are also reported in this work. The features of the QPOs a…
We derive accretion flow properties of the transient black hole candidate (BHC) MAXI~J1543-564 using the RXTE data. We use Two-Component Advective Flow (TCAF) solution to fit the data of the very initial rising phase of outburst (from 2011 May 10 to 2011 May 15). $2.5-25$~keV spectra are fitted using the TCAF solution {\it fits} file as a local additive table model in XSPEC. We extract physical flow parameters such as the two component (Keplerian disk and sub-Keplerian halo) accretion rates and size and the property of the Compton cloud (post shock region close to a black hole). Similar to oth…
We study black hole candidate (BHC) MAXI~J1836-194 during its 2011 outburst with Two Component Advective Flow (TCAF) model using RXTE/PCU2 data in $2.5-25$~keV band. From spectral fit, accretion flow parameters such as Keplerian disk rate ($\dot{m_d}$), sub-Keplerian halo rate ($\dot{m_h}$), shock location ($X_{s}$) and compression ratio (R) are extracted directly. During the entire phase of the outburst, quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are observed sporadically. From the nature of the variation of accretion rate ratio (ARR=$\dot{m_h}$ / $\dot{m_d}$) and QPOs, entire period of the outburst …

Using wavelet analysis and power density spectrum, we investigate two transient quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in MAXI J1535$-$571 observed with Insight-HXMT. The transient QPOs have a centroid frequency of $\sim 10$ Hz with a FWHM $\sim 0.6$ Hz and an rms amplitude $\sim 14\%$. Energy spectra of QPO and non-QPO regimes are also separated and analyzed, and the spectra become softer with higher $E_{cut}$ in the non-QPO regime compared to the QPO regime. Our results suggest that the transient QPOs detected in MJD 58016 and 58017 are still the type-C QPO, and the source remains in it…
Galactic transient black hole candidate (BHC) MAXI~J1836-194 was discovered on 2011 Aug 30, by MAXI/GSC and Swift/BAT. The source activity during this outburst was continued for ~3 months before entering into the quiescent state. It again became active in March 2012 and continued for another ~2 months. In this paper, 3-25 keV RXTE/PCA spectra of 2011 outburst and 0.5-10.0 keV Swift/XRT data during its 2012 outburst are analyzed with the two-component advective flow (TCAF) model based fits file in XSPEC. We calculate the X-ray contributions coming from jets/outflow using a newly developed metho…
A new black hole X-ray binary (BHXRB) MAXI J1535-571 was discovered by MAXI during its outburst in 2017. Using observations taken by the first Chinese X-ray satellite, the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (dubbed as Insight-HXMT), we perform a joint spectral analysis (2-150 keV) in both energy and time domains. The energy spectra provide the essential input for probing the intrinsic Quasi-Periodic Oscillation (QPO) fractional rms spectra (FRS). Our results show that during the intermediate state, the energy spectra are in general consistent with those reported by Swift/XRT and NuSTAR. However, …
We present spectral and timing properties of the newly discovered X-ray transient source, MAXI J1535-571, which is believed to be a Galactic X-ray binary containing a black hole candidate (BHC) as the primary object. After its discovery on 2017 Sep. 2, it has been monitored regularly in multi-wavelength bands by several satellites. We use archival data of Swift (XRT and BAT) and MAXI (GSC) satellite instruments to study accretion flow dynamics of the source during the outburst. During its outburst, the source became very bright in the sky with a maximum observed flux of $5$~Crab in the $2-10$~…
We study transient Galatic black hole candidate MAXI~J1836-194 during its 2011 outburst using RXTE/PCA archival data. 2.5-25~keV spectra are fitted with Two Component Advective Flow (TCAF) model fits file as an additive table local model in XSPEC. From TCAF model spectral fits, physical parameters such as Keplerian disk rate, sub-Keplerian halo rate, shock location and compression ratio are extracted directly for better understanding of accretion processes around the BHC during this outburst. Low frequency quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) are observed sporadically during the entire epoch of th…
Magnetars are neutron stars with extreme magnetic field and sometimes manifest as soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs). SGR J1935+2154 is one of the most prolific bursters and the first confirmed source of fast radio burst (i.e. FRB 200428). Encouraged by the discovery of the first X-ray counterpart of FRB, Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) implemented a dedicated 33-day long ToO observation of SGR J1935+2154 since April 28, 2020. With the HE, ME, and LE telescopes, Insight-HXMT provides a thorough monitoring of burst activity evolution of SGR J1935+2154, in a very broad energy…
MAXI J1820+070 is a newly-discovered black hole X-ray binary, whose dynamical parameters, namely the black hole mass, the inclination angle and the source distance, have been estimated recently. \emph{Insight}-HXMT have observed its entire outburst from March 14th, 2018. In this work, we attempted to estimate the spin parameter~$a_*$, using the continuum-fitting method and applying a fully-relativistic thin disk model to the soft-state spectra obtained by \emph{Insight}-HXMT. It is well know that $a_*$ is strongly dependent on three dynamical parameters in this method, and we have examined two…
We studied the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillation (mHz QPO) in the 2020 outburst of the Be/X-ray binary 1A 0535+262 using Insight-HXMT data over a broad energy band. The mHz QPO is detected in the 27-120 keV energy band. The QPO centroid frequency is correlated with the source flux, and evolves in the 35-95 mHz range during the outburst. The QPO is most significant in the 50-65 keV band, with a significance of ~ 8 sigma, but is hardly detectable (<2 sigma) in the lowest (1-27 keV) and highest (>120 keV) energy bands. Notably, the detection of mHz QPO above 80 keV is the highest energy at wh…
We study the 2018 outburst of Aql X-1 via the monitor of all sky X-ray image (MAXI) data. We show that the outburst starting in February 2018 is a member of short-low class in the frame of outburst duration and the peak count rate although the outburst morphology is slightly different from the other fast-rise-exponential-decay (FRED) type outbursts with a milder rising stage. We study the partial accretion in the weak propeller stage of Aql X-1 via the MAXI data of the 2018 outburst. We report on the spectral analysis of 3 observations of Aquila X-1 obtained by Insight - hard X-ray modulation …
We study the evolution of the temporal properties of MAXI 1820+070 during the 2018 outburst in its hard state from MJD 58190 to 58289 with Insight-HXMT in a broad energy band 1-150 keV. We find different behaviors of the hardness ratio, the fractional rms and time lag before and after MJD 58257, suggesting a transition occurred at around this point. The observed time lags between the soft photons in the 1-5 keV band and the hard photons in higher energy bands, up to 150 keV, are frequency-dependent: the time lags in the low-frequency range, 2-10 mHz, are both soft and hard lags with a timescal…
We present a spectral study of the black hole candidate MAXI J1348-630 during its 2019 outburst, based on monitoring observations with Insight-HXMT and Swift. Throughout the outburst, the spectra are well fitted with power-law plus disk-blackbody components. In the soft-intermediate and soft states, we observed the canonical relation L ~ T_in^4 between disk luminosity L and peak colour temperature T_in, with a constant inner radius R_in (traditionally identified with the innermost stable circular orbit). At other stages of the outburst cycle, the behaviour is more unusual, inconsistent with th…
We report on X-ray spectral and timing results of the new black hole candidate (BHC) MAXI J1659-152 with the orbital period of 2.41 hours (shortest among BHCs) in the 2010 outburst from 65 Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) observations and 8 simultaneous Swift and RXTE observations. According to the definitions of the spectral states in Remillard & McClintock (2006), most of the observations have been classified into the intermediate state. All the X-ray broadband spectra can be modeled by a multi-color disk plus a power-law with an exponential cutoff or a multi-color disk plus a Comptonizati…
The dissipation process of GRB prompt emission is still unknown. Study of temporal variability may provide a unique way to discriminate the imprint of the inner engine activity from geometry and propagation related effects. We define the minimum variability timescale (MVT) as the shortest duration of individual pulses that shape a light curve for a sample of GRBs and test correlations with peak luminosity, Lorentz factor, and jet opening angle. We compare these correlations with predictions from recent numerical simulations for a relativistic structured -- possibly wobbling -- jet and assess t…
New insight into the hard X-ray emission influenced by the type-\uppercase\expandafter{\romannumeral1} bursts observed by Insight-HXMT during outburst of 4U 1636--536
We present the observational results from a detailed timing analysis of the black hole candidate EXO 1846-031 during its outburst in 2019 with the observations of Insight-HXMT, NICER and MAXI. This outburst can be classfied roughly into four different states. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed by NICER (about 0.1-6Hz) and Insight-HXMT (about 0.7-8Hz) are also reported in this work. Meanwhile, we study various physical quantities related to QPO frequency. The QPO rms-frequency relationship in three energy band 1-10 keV indicates that there is a turning pointing in frequency aroun…
We studied the transient Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J0637-430 with data from Insight-HXMT, Swift and XMM-Newton. The broad-band X-ray observations from Insight-HXMT help us constrain the power-law component. MAXI J0637-430 is located at unusually high Galactic latitude; if it belongs to the Galactic thick disk, we suggest a most likely distance <7 kpc. Compared with other black hole transients, MAXI J0637-430 is also unusual for other reasons: a fast transition to the thermal dominant state at the start of the outburst; a low peak temperature and luminosity (we estimate them at ~ 0.7 k…
The newly discovered galactic black hole candidate (BHC) MAXI~J1348-630 showed two major outbursts in 2019, just after its discovery. Here, we provide a detailed spectral and temporal analysis of the less-studied second outburst using archive data from multiple satellites, namely Swift, MAXI, NICER, NuSTAR and AstroSat. The outburst continued for around two and a half months. Unlike the first outburst from this source, this second outburst was a `failed' one. The source did not transition to soft or intermediate spectral states. During the entire outburst, the source was in the hard state with…
Measurement of Neutral Atmosphere Density During the Years of Increasing Solar Activity Using \textit{Insight}-HXMT Data with the Earth Occultation Technique
Galactic short orbital period black hole candidate (BHC) XTE~J1752-223 was discovered on 2009 Oct 21 by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). We study the spectral properties of this outburst using transonic flow solution based two component advective flow (TCAF) model. TCAF model fitted spectrum gives an estimation of the physical flow parameters, such as the Keplerian disk rate, sub-Keplerian halo rate, properties of the so-called {\it{Compton cloud}}, other than the mass of the source and normalization ($N$). $N$ is a standardized ratio of emitted to observed photon flux in TCAF which doe…
A black hole X-ray binary produces hard X-ray radiation from its corona and disk when the accreting matter heats up. During an outburst, the disk and corona co-evolves with each other. However, such an evolution is still unclear in both its geometry and dynamics. Here we report the unusual decrease of the reflection fraction in MAXI J1820+070, which is the ratio of the coronal intensity illuminating the disk to the coronal intensity reaching the observer, as the corona is observed to contrast during the decay phase. We postulate a jet-like corona model, in which the corona can be understood as…
Low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) are commonly found in black hole X-ray binaries, and their origin is still under debate. The properties of LFQPOs at high energies (above 30 keV) are closely related to the nature of the accretion flow in the innermost regions, and thus play a crucial role in critically testing various theoretical models. The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) is capable of detecting emissions above 30 keV, and is therefore an ideal instrument to do so. Here we report the discovery of LFQPOs above 200 keV in the new black hole MAXI J1820+070 in the…
We present high-speed optical photometry from SAAO and SALT on the black hole LMXB \MAXI (ASSASN-18ey), some of it simultaneous with NICER, Swift and Insight-HXMT X-ray coverage. We detect optical Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs) that move to higher frequencies as the outburst progresses, tracking both the frequency and evolution of similar X-ray QPOs previously reported. Correlated X-ray/optical data reveal a complex pattern of lags, including an anti-correlation and a sub-second lag that evolve over the first few weeks of outburst. They also show correlated components separated by a lag eq…
