We consider mobile grasping in unknown and dynamic environments, where a robot must approach and grasp a target object using a camera with a limited field of view. This setting introduces two visibility constraints. Incomplete environmental observations can create collision risks along the whole-body trajectory, while occlusions can hinder object pose refinement during grasping. Previous systems often assume known or static environments and decouple perception from motion, leaving safety unresolved around unobserved obstacles. We present a unified system that enforces both visibility constraints at runtime through three core components. A velocity-aware gaze policy directs perception toward fast-moving regions of the planned swept volume, a hierarchical subgoal policy samples grasp and intermediate configurations that maintain target visibility, and a real-time whole-body planner replans over a receding horizon as the map updates. Across 400 randomized simulation scenarios and real-world trials on a Fetch mobile manipulator, our system achieves success rates of 70.4% in unknown static environments and 57.9% in dynamic environments, outperforming the decoupled navigation- and-manipulation strategy by 16.3 and 9.3 percentage points, respectively, while significantly reducing collisions.

Mobile manipulators have the potential to revolutionize modern agriculture, logistics and manufacturing. In this work, we present the design of a ground-based mobile manipulator for automated structure assembly. The proposed system is capable of autonomous localization, grasping, transportation and deployment of construction material in a semi-structured environment. Special effort was put into making the system invariant to lighting changes, and not reliant on external positioning systems. Therefore, the presented system is self-contained and capable of operating in outdoor and indoor conditi…

Many people with motor disabilities are unable to complete activities of daily living (ADLs) without assistance. This paper describes a complete robotic system developed to provide mobile grasping assistance for ADLs. The system is comprised of a robot arm from a Rethink Robotics Baxter robot mounted to an assistive mobility device, a control system for that arm, and a user interface with a variety of access methods for selecting desired objects. The system uses grasp detection to allow previously unseen objects to be picked up by the system. The grasp detection algorithms also allow for objec…

Agile control of mobile manipulator is challenging because of the high complexity coupled by the robotic system and the unstructured working environment. Tracking and grasping a dynamic object with a random trajectory is even harder. In this paper, a multi-task reinforcement learning-based mobile manipulation control framework is proposed to achieve general dynamic object tracking and grasping. Several basic types of dynamic trajectories are chosen as the task training set. To improve the policy generalization in practice, random noise and dynamics randomization are introduced during the train…

Developing personal robots that can perform a diverse range of manipulation tasks in unstructured environments necessitates solving several challenges for robotic grasping systems. We take a step towards this broader goal by presenting the first RL-based system, to our knowledge, for a mobile manipulator that can (a) achieve targeted grasping generalizing to unseen target objects, (b) learn complex grasping strategies for cluttered scenes with occluded objects, and (c) perform active vision through its movable wrist camera to better locate objects. The system is informed of the desired target …

In this paper, we consider the gathering problem of seven autonomous mobile robots on triangular grids. The gathering problem requires that, starting from any connected initial configuration where a subgraph induced by all robot nodes (nodes where a robot exists) constitutes one connected graph, robots reach a configuration such that the maximum distance between two robots is minimized. For the case of seven robots, gathering is achieved when one robot has six adjacent robot nodes (they form a shape like a hexagon). In this paper, we aim to clarify the relationship between the capability of ro…

This paper introduces a novel approach for whole-body motion planning and dynamic occlusion avoidance. The proposed approach reformulates the visibility constraint as a likelihood maximization of visibility probability. In this formulation, we augment the primary cost function of a whole-body model predictive control scheme through a relaxed log barrier function yielding a relaxed log-likelihood maximization formulation of visibility probability. The visibility probability is computed through a probabilistic shadow field that quantifies point light source occlusions. We provide the necessary a…

To help future mobile agents plan their movement in harsh environments,a predictive model has been designed to determine what areas would be favorable for Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning. The model is able to predict the number of viable satellites for a GNSS receiver, based on a 3D point cloud map and a satellite constellation. Both occlusion and absorption effects of the environment are considered. A rugged mobile platform was designed to collect data in order to generate the point cloud maps. It was deployed during the Canadian winter known for large amounts of snow an…

This paper introduces mathematical models of \sensors\ for mobile robots based on visibility. Serving a purpose similar to the pinhole camera model for computer vision, the introduced models are expected to provide a useful, idealized characterization of task-relevant information that can be inferred from their outputs or observations. Possible tasks include navigation, localization and mapping when a mobile robot is deployed in an unknown environment. These models allow direct comparisons to be made between traditional depth sensors, highlighting cases in which touch sensing may be interchang…
We present an approach for visualizing mobile robots through an Augmented Reality headset when there is no line-of-sight visibility between the robot and the human. Three elements are visualized in Augmented Reality: 1) Robot's 3D model to indicate its position, 2) An arrow emanating from the robot to indicate its planned movement direction, and 3) A 2D grid to represent the ground plane. We conduct a user study with 18 participants, in which each participant are asked to retrieve objects, one at a time, from stations at the two sides of a T-junction at the end of a hallway where a mobile robo…
In this paper, we examine the problem of visibility-aware robot navigation among movable obstacles (VANAMO). A variant of the well-known NAMO robotic planning problem, VANAMO puts additional visibility constraints on robot motion and object movability. This new problem formulation lifts the restrictive assumption that the map is fully visible and the object positions are fully known. We provide a formal definition of the VANAMO problem and propose the Look and Manipulate Backchaining (LaMB) algorithm for solving such problems. LaMB has a simple vision-based API that makes it more easily transf…

Mobile robotics can offer solutions with a high degree of mobility and dexterity, however these complex systems require a multitude of heterogeneous components to be carefully integrated into one consistent framework. This work presents a mobile manipulation system that combines perception, localization, navigation, motion planning and grasping skills into one common wor…
This paper presents a coordination algorithm for mobile autonomous robots. Relying upon distributed sensing the robots achieve rendezvous, that is, they move to a common location. Each robot is a point mass moving in a nonconvex environment according to an omnidirectional kinematic model. Each robot is equipped with line-of-sight limited-range sensors, i.e., a robot can measure the relative position of any object (robots or environment boundary) if and only if the object is within a given distance and there are no obstacles in-between. The algorithm is designed using the notions of robust visi…

In this paper, we consider the problem of planning optimal locations and trajectories for a group of autonomous vehicles to see a set of units that are dispersed in an environment with obstacles. The contributions of the paper are the following: 1) We propose centralized and distributed algorithms to verify that the vehicle…

In this paper we investigate the computational power of a set of mobile robots with limited visibility. At each iteration, a robot takes a snapshot of its surroundings, uses the snapshot to compute a destination point, and it moves toward its destination. Each robot is punctiform and memoryless, it operates in $\mathbb{R}^m$, it has a local reference system independent of the other robots' ones, and is activated asynchronously by an adversarial scheduler. Moreover, robots are non-rigid, in that they may be stopped by the scheduler at each move before reaching their destination (but are guarant…
It is challenging to grasp numerous objects with varying sizes and shapes with a single robot hand. To address this, we propose a new robot hand called the 'F3 hand' inspired by the complex movements of human index finger and thumb. The F3 hand attempts to realize complex human-like grasping movements by combining a parallel motion finger and a rotational motion finger with an adaptive function. In order to confirm the performance of our hand, we attached it to a mobile manipulator - the Toyota Human Support Robot (HSR) and conducted grasping experiments. In our results, we show that it is abl…

In this paper we address mobile manipulation planning problems in the presence of sensing and environmental uncertainty. In particular, we consider mobile sensing manipulators operating in environments with unknown geometry and uncertain movable objects, while being responsible for accomplishing tasks requiring grasping and releasing objects in a logical fashion. Existing algorithms either do not scale well or neglect sensing and/or environmental uncertainty. To face these challenges, we propose a hybrid control architecture, where a symbolic controller generates high-level manipulation comman…
Complex manipulation tasks, such as rearrangement planning of numerous objects, are combinatorially hard problems. Existing algorithms either do not scale well or assume a great deal of prior knowledge about the environment, and few offer any rigorous guarantees. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid control architecture for achieving such tasks with mobile manipulators. On the discrete side, we enrich a temporal logic specification with mobile manipulation primitives such as moving to a point, and grasping or moving an object. Such specifications are translated to an automaton representati…
Providing mobile robots with the ability to manipulate objects has, despite decades of research, remained a challenging problem. The problem is approachable in constrained environments where there is ample prior knowledge of the environment layout and manipulatable objects. The challenge is in building systems that scale beyond specific situational instances and gracefully operate in novel conditions. In the past, researchers used heuristic and simple rule-based strategies to accomplish tasks such as scene segmentation or reasoning about occlusion. These heuristic strategies work in constraine…

In this paper we study the Near-Gathering problem for a finite set of dimensionless, deterministic, asynchronous, anonymous, oblivious and autonomous mobile robots with limited visibility moving in the Euclidean plane in Look-Compute-Move (LCM) cycles. In this problem, the robots have to get close enough to each other, so that every robot can see all the others, without touching (i.e., colliding with) any other robot. The importance of solving the Near-Gathering problem is that it makes it possible to overcome the restriction of having robots with limited visibility. Hence it allows to exploit…
