Gas accretion process can fuel both star formation and black hole activity, playing a critical role in galaxy evolution. The counter-rotating structures are believed to originate from gas accretion, serving as an ideal laboratory for studying its impact on galaxy evolution. Based on the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey, we built a sample of 147 galaxies with counter-rotating stellar disks (CRDs). This is the largest CRD sample to date, accounting for $\sim$1.5% of the MaNGA survey. For a subset of 138 CRDs, global stellar mass ($M_\ast$) and star formation rate (SFR) were measured in reference. We constructed a control sample with similar $M_\ast$ and SFR but lacking counter-rotating structures. The CRDs relatively exhibit more bulge-dominated morphology, lower molecular gas mass fraction and reside in less dense environment, supporting the hypothesis that they primarily originate from gas accretion. We classified 96 out of 138 CRDs into four types based on their stellar and gas kinematics following the criteria from Bao et al. (2022). There are two additional CRD types: 8 CRDs show misalignment between both stellar disks and gas disk, indicating multiple gas accretion events with differing angular momentum directions; 34 CRDs lack ionized gas emission, showing the highest $M_\ast$ among all the CRD types, which may represent a final stage of CRD evolution. We compared the radial gradients of gas-phase metallicity and stellar population properties between CRD types, and found that the impact of gas accretion on galaxy evolution primarily depends on the abundance of pre-existing gas in progenitors.
We study the radial acceleration relation (RAR) for early-type galaxies (ETGs) in the SDSS MaNGA MPL5 dataset. The complete ETG sample show a slightly offset RAR from the relation reported by McGaugh et al. (2016) at the low-acceleration end; we find that the deviation is due to the fact that the slow rotators show a systematically higher acceleration relation than the McGaugh's RAR, while the fast rotators show a consistent acceleration relation to McGaugh's RAR. There is a 1σsignificant difference between the acceleration relations of the fast and slow rotators, suggesting that the accelerat…
We present the integral-field kinematics and stellar population properties of 64 galaxies (61 are Early-Type galaxies, ETGs) with Counter-Rotating stellar Disks (CRD) selected from about 4000 galaxies in the MaNGA survey, based on evidence of counter-rotation or two velocity dispersion peaks in the kinematic maps. For 17 CRDs, the counter-rotating components can also be separated spectroscopically. The frequency of CRDs in MaNGA is <5% for ellipticals, <3% for lenticulars and <1% for spirals (at 95% confidence level), consistent with previous estimates. We produced age and metallicity maps, an…
Counter-rotating components in galaxies are one of the most direct forms of evidence for past gas accretion or merging. We discovered ten edge-on disk gaseous counter-rotators in a sample of 523 edge-on galaxies identified in the final MaNGA (Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO) IFU sample. The counter-rotators tend to located in small groups. The gaseous counter-rotators have intermediate stellar masses and and located in the green valley and red sequence of the color magnitude diagram. The average vertical extents of the stellar and ionized gas disks are the same as for the rest of the sample whi…
Galaxy mergers and interactions are expected to play a significant role leading to offsets between gas and stellar motions in galaxies. Herein we crossmatch galaxies in MaNGA MPL-8 with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Legacy Surveys and identify 311 merging galaxies that have reliable measurements of the $Δ$PA, the difference between the stellar and gas kinematic position angles to investigate the impacts of merging on gas-stellar rotation misalignments. We find that the merging fractions of misaligned galaxies (30$^\circ$ $\leqslant$ $Δ$PA $<$150$^\circ$) are higher than that …

Changing-look Active Galactic Nuclei (CL-AGNs) are a subset of AGNs in which the broad Balmer emission lines appear or disappear within a few years. We use the Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey to identify five CL-AGNs. The 2-D photometric and kinematic maps reveal common features as well as some unusual properties of CL-AGN hosts as compared to the AGN hosts in general. All MaNGA CL-AGNs reside in the star-forming main sequence, similar to MaNGA non-changing-look AGNs (NCL-AGNs). The $80\% \pm 16\%$ of our CL-AGNs do possess pseudo-bulge features, and follow t…
Pressure supported systems modeled under MONDian extended gravity are expected to show an outer flattening in their velocity dispersion profiles. A characteristic scaling between the amplitude of the asymptotic velocity dispersion and the radius at which the flattening occurs is also expected. By comprehensively analyzing the dynamical behavior of $\sim$300 extremely low rotating elliptical galaxies from the MaNGA survey, we show this type of pressure supported systems to be consistent with MONDian expectations, for a range of central velocity dispersion values of $60 km/s < σ_{central}< 280 k…
Given their prominent role in galaxy evolution, it is of paramount importance to unveil galaxy interactions and merger events and to investigate the underlying mechanisms. The use of high-resolution data makes it easier to identify merging systems, but it can still be challenging when the morphology does not show any clear galaxy-pair or gas bridge. Characterising the origin of puzzling kinematic features can help to reveal complicated systems. Here, we present a merging galaxy, MaNGA 1-114955, in which we highlighted the superimposition of two distinct rotating discs along the line of sight. …
Bars are common in low-redshift disk galaxies, and hence quantifying their influence on their host is of importance to the field of galaxy evolution. We determine the stellar populations and star formation histories of 245 barred galaxies from the MaNGA galaxy survey, and compare them to a mass- and morphology-matched comparison sample of unbarred galaxies. At fixed stellar mass and morphology, barred galaxies are optically redder than their unbarred counterparts. From stellar population analysis using the full spectral fitting code Starlight, we attribute this difference to both older and mor…
Context. Many disk galaxies host two extended stellar components that rotate in opposite directions. The analysis of the stellar populations of the counter-rotating components provides constraints on the environmental and internal processes that drive their formation. Aims. The S0 NGC 1366 in the Fornax cluster is known to host a stellar component that is kinematically decoupled from the main body of the galaxy. Here we successfully separated the two counter-rotating stellar components to independently measure the kinematics and properties of their stellar populations. Methods. We performed a …
We have carried out a systematic search for outlying H$α$ emitters in the entire data release 14 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) IV Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) survey. We have discovered six outlying H$α$ emitters with no bright underlying optical continuum emission in the imaging data release 5 from the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey (DECaLS) and data release 6 of the Mayall $z$-band Legacy Survey (MzLS) + Beijing-Arizona Sky Survey (BASS). They also show a velocity field which is different from that of the host galaxy. These outlying H$α$ emitters all have extended struct…
Galaxy-wide star formation can be quenched by a number of physical processes such as environmental effects (e.g., ram pressure stripping) and supernova feedback. Using numerical simulations, we here demonstrate that star formation can be severely suppressed in disk galaxies with their gas disks counter-rotating with respect to their stellar disks. This new mechanism of star formation suppression (or quenching) does not depend so strongly on model parameters of disk galaxies, such as bulge-to-disk- ratios and gas mass fractions. Such severe suppression of star formation is due largely to the su…
As available data sets grow in size and complexity, advanced visualization tools enabling their exploration and analysis become more important. In modern astronomy, integral field spectroscopic galaxy surveys are a clear example of increasing dimensionality and complexity of datasets, which challenge the traditional methods used to extract the physical information they contain. We present the use of a novel self-supervised Machine Learning method to visualize the multi-dimensional information on stellar population and kinematics in the MaNGA survey in a two dimensional plane. Our framework is …
In recent years integral-field spectroscopic surveys have revealed that the presence of kinematically decoupled stellar components is not a rare phenomenon in nearby galaxies. However, complete statistics are still lacking because they depend on the detection limit of these objects. We investigate the kinematic signatures of two large-scale counter-rotating stellar disks in mock integral-field spectroscopic data to address their detection limits as a function of the galaxy properties and instrumental setup. We built a set of mock data of two large-scale counter-rotating stellar disks as if the…
By applying spectroscopic decomposition methods to a sample of MaNGA early-type galaxies, we separate out spatially and kinematically distinct stellar populations, allowing us to explore the similarities and differences between galaxy bulges and discs, and how they affect the global properties of the galaxy. We find that the components have interesting variations in their stellar populations, and display different kinematics. Bulges tend to be consistently more metal rich than their disc counterparts, and while the ages of both components are comparable, there is an interesting tail of younger…
We present new observations of two z=0.12 strong-lensing elliptical galaxies, originally discovered from the SDSS-IV MaNGA survey, using the new FOCAS IFU spectrograph on the Subaru Telescope. For J1436+4943, our observations confirm the identification of this system as a multiple-image lens, in a cusp configuration, with Einstein radius $θ_{Ein}$=2.0 arcsec. For J1701+3722, the improved data confirm earlier hints of a complex source plane, with different configurations evident in different emission lines. The new observations reveal a previously unseen inner counter-image to the [OIII] arc fo…

The counter-rotation phenomenon in disc galaxies directly indicates a complex galaxy assembly history which is crucial for our understanding of galaxy physics. Here we present the complex data analysis for a lenticular galaxy NGC 448, which has been recently suspected to host a counter-rotating stellar component. We collected deep long-slit spectroscopic observations using the Russian 6-m telescope and performed the photometric decomposition of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) archival images. We exploited (i) a non-parametric approach in order to recover stellar line-of-sight velocity distribu…
We report the discovery of a mysterious giant $H_α$ blob that is $\sim 8$ kpc away from the main MaNGA target 1-24145, one component of a dry galaxy merger, identified in the first-year SDSS-IV MaNGA data. The size of the $H_α$ blob is $\sim$ 3-4 kpc in radius, and the $H_α$ distribution is centrally concentrated. However, there is no optical continuum counterpart in deep broadband images reaching $\sim$26.9 mag arcsec$^{-2}$ in surface brightness. We estimate that the masses of ionized and cold gases are $3.3 \times 10^{5}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$ and $< 1.3 \times 10^{9}$ $\rm M_{\odot}$, respective…

The nature of warm, ionized gas outside of galaxies may illuminate several key galaxy evolutionary processes. A serendipitous observation by the MaNGA survey has revealed a large, asymmetric H$α$ complex with no optical counterpart that extends $\approx8"$ ($\approx6.3$ kpc) beyond the effective radius of a dusty, starbursting galaxy. This H$α$ extension is approximately three times the effective radius of the host galaxy and displays a tail-like morphology. We analyze its gas-phase metallicities, gaseous kinematics, and emission-line ratios, and discuss whether this H$α$ extension could be di…
The observation of counter rotation in galaxies (i.e. gas that rotates in the opposite direction to the stellar component or two co-spatial stellar populations with opposite rotation) is becoming more commonplace with modern integral field spectroscopic surveys. In this paper we explore the emergence of counter-rotation (both stellar and gaseous) in S0 galaxies from smoothed-particle hydrodynamics simulations of 1/10 mass ratio minor mergers between a 10^10.8 solar mass disk galaxy with a bulge-to-total ration of 0.17 and a gas rich companion (gas-to-stellar mass fraction of 5.0). These simula…
This is the third paper of a series where we study the stellar population gradients (SP; ages, metallicities, $α$-element abundance ratios and stellar initial mass functions) of early type galaxies (ETGs) at $z\le 0.08$ from the MaNGA-DR15 survey. In this work we focus on the S0 population and quantify how the SP varies across the population as well as with galactocentric distance. We do this by measuring Lick indices and comparing them to stellar population synthesis models. This requires spectra with high signal-to-noise which we achieve by stacking in bins of luminosity (L$_r$) and central …
Extreme emission-line galaxies, such as blue compact dwarfs (BCDs), Green Peas (GPs) and blueberries in the local Universe are the potential candidates to understand the nature of galaxies that re-ionized the early Universe. Being low-mass, metal-poor starburst systems they are understood as local analogs of the high redshift Lyman Continuum (LyC) and Lyman-$α$ emitters (LAEs). Even with their proximity to us, we know little about their spatially resolved properties, most of the blueberries and GPs are indeed compact, remain unresolved. Here, we report the detection of a disk-like lower-surfac…
The process of galactic disc growing is still not fully understood. In the majority of disk galaxies the gas and stars are located in the same plane and rotate in the same direction. However, there are kinematically peculiar galaxies hosting two counter-rotating stellar discs. Their origin is believed to be the result of a past event of accretion of gas followed by star formation. By studying such galaxies we can learn how much material, when, and how, have fallen onto the progenitor galaxy. We identified a sample of 56 counter-rotating galaxies in the MaNGA IFU survey and initiated a follow-u…
The formation scenario of extended counter-rotating stellar disks in galaxies is still debated. In this paper, we study the S0 galaxy IC 719 known to host two large-scale counter-rotating stellar disks in order to investigate their formation mechanism. We exploit the large field of view and wavelength coverage of the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) spectrograph to derive two-dimensional (2D) maps of the various properties of the counter-rotating stellar disks, such as age, metallicity, kinematics, spatial distribution, the kinematical and chemical properties of the ionized gas, and th…
A key feature of a large population of low-mass, late-type disk galaxies are star-forming disks with exponential light distributions. They are typically also associated with thin and flat morphologies, blue colors, and dynamically cold stars moving along circular orbits within co-planar thin gas disks. However, the latter features do not necessarily always imply the former, in fact, a variety of different kinematic configurations do exist. In this work, we use the cosmological hydrodynamical IllustrisTNG Simulation to study the nature and origin of dynamically hot, sometimes even counter-rotat…
Galaxies grow through both internal and external processes. In about 10% of nearby red galaxies with little star formation, gas and stars are counter-rotating, demonstrating the importance of external gas acquisition in these galaxies. However, systematic studies of such phenomena in blue, star-forming galaxies are rare, leaving uncertain the role of external gas acquisition in driving evolution of blue galaxies. Based on new measurements with integral field spectroscopy of a large representative galaxy sample, we find an appreciable fraction of counter-rotators among blue galaxies (9 out of 4…
We characterized the kinematics, morphology, and stellar population (SP) properties of a sample of massive compact quiescent galaxies (MCGs, $10 \lesssim \log M_\star$/$M_\odot \lesssim 11$ and $r_{\rm e} \sim 1-3 $kpc) in the MaNGA Survey, with the goal of constraining their formation, assembly history and assessing their relation with non-compact quiescent galaxies. We compared their properties with those of a control sample of median-sized quiescent galaxies ($r_{\rm e} \sim 4-8 $kpc) with similar effective velocity dispersions. MCGs have elevated rotational support, as evidenced by a stron…
We study the link between the kinematic-morphology of galaxies, as inferred from integral-field stellar kinematics, and their relation between mass and star formation rate (SFR). Our sample consists of $\sim 3200$ galaxies with integral-field spectroscopic data from the MaNGA survey with available determinations of their effective stellar angular momentum within the half-light radius $λ_{R_e}$. We find that for star-forming galaxies, namely along the star formation main sequence (SFMS), the $λ_{R_e}$ values remain large and almost unchanged over about two orders of magnitude in stellar mass, w…
The massive early-type galaxy (ETG) IC 1459 is a slowly rotating galaxy that exhibits a rapidly counter-rotating kinematically decoupled core (KDC, $R_{\rm KDC}\approx 5^{\prime\prime}\approx 0.1 R_{\rm e}$). To investigate the origin of its KDC, we coupled large data mosaics from the near-infrared (NIR)/optical integral field unit (IFU) instruments K-band Multi-Object Spectrograph (KMOS) and Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE). We studied IC 1459's stellar populations and, for the first time for a KDC, the spatially resolved initial mass function (IMF). We used full-spectral-fitting to f…
We present the evolution of rotational directions of circumstellar disks in a triple protostar system simulated from a turbulent molecular cloud core with no magnetic field. We find a new formation pathway of a counter-rotating circumstellar disk in such triple systems. The tertiary protostar forms via the circumbinary disk fragmentation and the initial rotational directions of all the three circumstellar disks are almost parallel to that of the orbital motion of the binary system. Their mutual gravito-hydrodynamical interaction for the subsequent $\sim10^4\thinspace\rm{yr}$ greatly disturbs t…
