We use the galaxy ultraviolet luminosity function measurements at $z=4-8$ to constrain modification to standard inflationary power spectrum. These observables are sensitive to the matter power spectrum which itself depends on inflationary initial conditions. We consider a specific model where a bump feature is introduced to the standard power law inflation spectrum. We find that the galaxy luminosity observables can probe such modifications at wavenumbers $0.5\lesssim k \lesssim 50$ Mpc$^{-1}$. We obtain upper limits on the amplitude of bump-like features at the mentioned wavenumbers. We obtain constraints which are similar to previous constraints on these models using measurements of optical depth of reionization. However, the galaxy luminosity functions are a more direct probe for these type of models and, therefore, can complement indirect constraints coming from measurements of IGM properties.
Inflationary models are usually UV sensitive. Several mechanism have been proposed to protect the necessary features of the potential, and most notably (softly broken) global symmetries as shift-symmetry. We show that, even in presence of these protecting mechanisms, the models maintain a serious UV-dependence. Via an improved effective theory analysis, we show how these corrections could significantly affect the duration of inflation, its robustness against the choice of initial conditions and the regimes that make it possible.
We perform a detailed analysis on a primordial gravitational-wave background amplified during a Kasner-like pre-inflationary phase allowing for general triaxial anisotropies. It is found that the predicted angular distribution map of gravitational-wave intensity on large scales exhibits topologically distinctive patterns according to the degree of the pre-inflationary anisotropy, thereby serving as a potential probe for the pre-inflationary early universe with future all-sky observations of gravitational waves. We also derive an observational limit on the amplitude of such anisotropic gravitat…
We investigate constraints on power spectra of the primordial curvature and tensor perturbations with priors based on single-field slow-roll inflation models. We stochastically draw the Hubble slow-roll parameters and generate the primordial power spectra using the inflationary flow equations. Using data from recent observations of CMB and several measurements of geometrical distances in the late Universe, Bayesian parameter estimation and model selection are performed for models that have separate priors on the slow-roll parameters. The same analysis is also performed adopting the standard pa…
We analyse the epoch of reheating after an inflationary phase in the Randal Sundrum(RS) Type-$\rm II$ braneworld, where we did not consider any particular model of inflation, but rather reconstructed the inflationary potential solving the flow equations using Monte Carlo (MC) approach. It is shown numerically that a potential conceived through the MC reconstruction technique can be represented by an effective potential as a function of the number of e-foldings($N$). Then, the epoch of reheating is studied for this reconstructed potential. The relation between the reheating temperature ($T_{\rm…
Recent cosmological observations indicate the existence of extra light species, i.e., dark radiation. In this paper we show that signatures of the dark radiation are imprinted in the spectrum of inflationary gravitational waves. If the dark radiation is produced by the decay of a massive particle, high frequency mode of the gravitational waves are suppressed. In addition, due to the effect of the anisotropic stress caused by the dark radiation, a dip in the gravitational wave spectrum may show up at the frequency which enters the horizon at the time of the dark radiation production. Once the g…
We study how inflationary observables associated with primordial tensor modes are affected by coupling the minimal field content with an extra spin-2 particle during inflation. We work with a model that is ghost-free at the fully non-linear level and show how the new degrees of freedom modify standard consistency relations for the tensor bispectrum. The extra interacting spin-2 field is necessarily massive and unitarity dictates its mass be in the $m \gtrsim H$ range. Despite the fact that this bound selects a decaying solution for the corresponding tensor mode, cosmological correlators still …
The detection of Primordial Gravitational Waves (PGWs) is one of the most important goals of modern cosmology since PGWs can both provide substantial evidence for primordial inflation and shed light on its physical nature. Small scale experiments on gravitational waves such as LIGO/VIRGO and, in future, LISA and Einstein Telescope (ET), being sensitive to the stochastic background of gravitational waves, can be used together with the CMB data to constrain the inflationary parameters. In performing these analyses the primordial tensor spectrum is usually parametrized with a power law that inclu…
We consider the prospects of probing features in the primordial power spectrum with future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization measurements. In the scope of the inflationary scenario, such features in the spectrum can be produced by local non-smooth pieces in an inflaton potential (smooth and quasi-flat in general) which in turn may originate from fast phase transitions during inflation in other quantum fields interacting with the inflaton. They can fit some outliers in the CMB temperature power spectrum which are unaddressed within the standard inflationary ${\mathrmΛ}$CDM model. W…
We investigate the potential for the LISA space-based interferometer to detect the stochastic gravitational wave background produced from different mechanisms during inflation. Focusing on well-motivated scenarios, we study the resulting contributions from particle production during inflation, inflationary spectator fields with varying speed of sound, effective field theories of inflation with specific patterns of symmetry breaking and models leading to the formation of primordial black holes. The projected sensitivities of LISA are used in a model-independent way for various detector designs …
These lectures cover the theoretical structure and phenomenology of some basic mechanisms for inflation. A full treatment of the problem requires `ultraviolet completion' because of the sensitivity of inflation to quantum gravity effects, while the observables are elegantly parameterized using low energy field theory. String theory provides novel mechanisms for inflation, some subject to significant observational tests, with highly UV-sensitive tensor mode measurements being a prime example. Although the ultraviolet completion is not directly accessible experimentally, some of these mechanisms…
We study a consistent infrared and ultraviolet regularization scheme for the cosmological perturbations. The infrared divergences are cured by assuming that the Universe undergoes a transition between a non-singular pre-inflationary, radiation-dominated phase and a slow-roll inflationary evolution. The ultraviolet divergences are eliminated via adiabatic subtraction. A consistent regularization of the field fluctuations through this transition is obtained by performing a mode matching for both the gauge invariant Mukhanov variable and its adiabatic expansion. We show that these quantities do n…
We investigate a (super-)renormalizable and ghost-free theory of gravity, showing that under a natural (exponential) ansatz of the form factor and a suitable truncation it can give rise to the Starobinsky inflationary theory in cosmological frameworks, and thus offering a theoretical justification of its origin. We study the corresponding inflationary evolution and we examine the generation of curvature perturbations, adapting the $f(R)$-like equations in a symmetry-reduced FLRW metric. Furthermore, we analyze how the ultraviolet regime of a simply renormalizable and unitary theory of gravity …

We investigate cosmological consequences of an inflationary model which incorporates a generic seesaw extension (types I and II) of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. A non-minimal coupling between the inflaton field and the Ricci scalar is considered as well as radiative corrections at one loop order. This connection between the inflationary dynamics with neutrino physics results in a predictive model whose observational viability is investigated in light of the current cosmic microwave background data, baryon acoustic oscillation observations and type Ia supernovae measurements. Our res…
We study non-linear contributions to the power spectrum of the curvature perturbation on super-horizon scales, produced during slow-roll inflation driven by a canonical single scalar field. We find that on large scales the linear power spectrum completely dominates and leading non-linear corrections remain totally negligible, indicating that we can safely rely on linear perturbation theory to study inflationary power spectrum. We also briefly comment on the infrared and ultraviolet behaviour of the non-linear corrections.
We explore the age distribution of the globular cluster (GC) system of the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 5128 using ultraviolet (UV) photometry from Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) observations, with UV - optical colors used as the age indicator. Most GCs in NGC 5128 follow the general trends of GCs in M31 and Milky Way in UV - optical color-color diagram, which indicates that the majority of GCs in NGC 5128 are old similar to the age range of old GCs in M31 and Milky Way. A large fraction of spectroscopically identified intermediate-age GC (IAGC) candidates with ~ 3-8 Gyr are not detected in…
We study the impacts of reheating temperature on the inflationary predictions of the spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio. Assuming sinusoidal oscillations and that reheating process is very fast, the reheating temperature can be constrained for sinusoidal oscillation within a factor of 10 - 100 or even better with the prospect of future observations. Beyond this, we find that the predictions can also be insensitive to the reheating temperature in certain models, including Higgs inflation.
The stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) offers a new opportunity to observe signals of primordial features from inflationary models. We study their detectability with future space-based gravitational waves experiments, focusing our analysis on the frequency range of the LISA mission. We compute gravitational wave spectra from primordial features by exploring the parameter space of a two-field inflation model capable of generating different classes of features. Fine-tuning in scales and amplitudes is necessary for these signals to fall in the observational windows. Once they show up…
With a radio continuum galaxy survey by the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a photometric galaxy survey by Euclid and their combination, we forecast future constraints on primordial non-Gaussianity. We focus on the potential impact of local-type higher-order nonlinear parameters on the parameter estimation and particularly the confirmation of the inflationary consistency inequality. Nonstandard inflationary models, such as multifield models, introduce the scale-dependent stochastic clustering of galaxies on large scales, which is a unique probe of mechanism for generating primordial density fluc…
We investigate the possibility of using future photometric and radio surveys to constrain the power spectrum of primordial fluctuations that is predicted by inflationary models with a violation of the slow-roll phase. We forecast constraints with a Fisher analysis on the amplitude of the parametrized features on ultra-large scales, in order to assess whether these could be distinguishable over the cosmic variance. We find that the next generation of photometric and radio surveys has the potential to test these models at a sensitivity better than current CMB experiments and that the synergy bet…
We investigate future constraints on primordial local-type non-Gaussianity from 21 cm angular power spectrum from minihalos. We particularly focus on the trispectrum of primordial curvature perturbations which are characterized by the non-linearity parameters $τ_{\rm NL}$ and $g_{\rm NL}$. We show that future measurements of minihalo 21 cm angular power spectrum can probe these non-linearity parameters with an unprecedented precision of $τ_{\rm NL}\sim30$ and $g_{\rm NL}\sim2\times10^3$ for Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and $τ_{\rm NL}\sim0.6$ and $g_{\rm NL}\sim8\times10^2$ for Fast Fourier Tr…
We derive oscillatory signals in correlation functions in two-field open inflation by means of the in-in formalism; such signatures are caused by resonances between oscillations in the tunnelling field and fluctuations in the inflaton during the curvature dominated, intermediate and subsequent inflationary regime. While amplitudes are model-dependent, we find distinct oscillations in the power and bi-spectrum that can act as a direct probe of the curvature dominated phase and thus, indirectly, strengthen the claim of the string landscape if they were observed. We comment on the prospects of de…
We study the capability of future measurements of the galaxy clustering power spectrum to probe departures from a power-law spectrum for primordial fluctuations. On considering the information from the galaxy clustering power spectrum up to quasi-linear scales, i.e. $k<0.1$ h Mpc$^{-1}$, we present forecasts for DESI, Euclid and SPHEREx in combination with CMB measurements. As examples of departures in the primordial power spectrum from a simple power-law, we consider four $Planck$ 2015 best-fits motivated by inflationary models with different breaking of the slow-roll approximation. These fou…
There currently exist many observations which are not consistent with the cosmological principle. We review these observations with a particular emphasis on those relevant for Square Kilometre Array (SKA). In particular, several different data sets indicate a preferred direction pointing approximately towards the Virgo cluster. We also observe a hemispherical anisotropy in the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) temperature fluctuations. Although these inconsistencies may be attributed to systematic effects, there remains the possibility that they indicate new physics and various theo…

We generalize the ultraviolet sector of gravitation via a Born-Infeld action using lessons from massive gravity. The theory contains all of the elementary symmetric polynomials and is treated in the Palatini formalism. We show how the connection can be solved algebraically to be the Levi-Civita connection of an effective metric. The non-linearity of the algebraic equations yields several branches, one of which always reduces to General Relativity at low curvatures. We explore in detail a {\it minimal} version of the theory, for which we study solutions in the presence of a perfect fluid with s…
