A modification of the widely-used spin-lock-induced crossing (SLIC) procedure is proposed for the solution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of strongly coupled nuclear spin systems, including singlet NMR and parahydrogen-enhanced hyperpolarised NMR experiments. The compensated-SLIC (cSLIC) scheme uses a repetitive sequence where the repeated element employs two different radiofrequency field amplitudes. Effective compensation for deviations in the radiofrequency field amplitude is achieved without increasing the overall duration of the SLIC sequence. The advantageous properties of cSLIC are demonstrated by numerical simulations and by representative experiments.
There are two kinds of atomic vapor cell gyroscopes, one is nuclear-magnetic-resonance (NMR) gyroscope and the other is spin-exchange-relaxation-free (SERF) gyroscope. We demonstrate that there is a common model for these two kinds of gyroscope. The output signals of NMR and SERF gyroscopes are compared directly, which provides an important guidance for the scheme choosing and optimization of atomic gyroscope. Although this expose of the equivalence cannot solve the current problems of atomic gyroscopes, such as the narrow response bandwidth of SERF gyroscope and the drift due to the different…
Quantum correlations are investigated theoretically in a two-spin system with the dipole-dipole interactions in the NMR multiple-pulse spin-locking experiments. We consider two schemes of the multiple-pulse spin-locking. The first scheme consists of $π/2$-pulses only and the delays between the pulses can differ. The second scheme contains $φ$-pulses ($0<φ<π$) and has equal delays between them. We calculate entanglement for both schemes for an initial separable state. We show that entanglement is absent for the first scheme at equal delays between $π/2$-pulses at arbitraty temperatures. Entangl…
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy usually requires high magnetic fields to create spectral resolution among different proton species. At low fields, chemical shift dispersion is insufficient to separate the species, and the spectrum exhibits just a single line. In this work, we demonstrate that spectra can nevertheless be acquired at low field using a novel pulse sequence called spin-lock induced crossing (SLIC). This probes energy level crossings induced by a weak spin-locking pulse and produces a unique J-coupling spectrum for most organic molecules. Unlike other forms of low-fie…
Nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in diamond have been used as ultrasensitive magnetometers to perform nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of statistically polarized samples at 1 - 100 nm length scales. However, the spectral linewidth is typically limited to the kHz level, both by the NV sensor coherence time and by rapid molecular diffusion of the nuclei through the detection volume which in turn is critical for achieving long nuclear coherence times. Here we provide a blueprint for a set-up that combines a sensitivity sufficient for detecting NMR signals from nano- to micron-scale samp…
In the strong coupling regime with J-coupling much larger than chemical shift differences, J-coupling spectroscopy enables spectral identification of molecules even when conventional NMR fails. While this classically required the presence of a heteronucleus, we recently showed that J-coupling spectra can be acquired in many homonuclear systems using spin-lock induced crossing (SLIC). Here, we present an alternative method using a spin echo train in lieu of a spin-locking SLIC pulse, which has a number of advantages. In particular, spin echo acquisition within the pulse train enables simultaneo…
We report an optical inelastic-wave-mixing-enhanced atomic magnetometry technique that results in nT-level magnetic field detection at temperatures compatible with the human body without magnetic shielding, zero-field compensation, or high-frequency modulated phase-locking spectroscopy. Using Gaussian magnetic pulses that mimic the transient magnetic field produced by an action potential on a frog's nerve, we demonstrate more than 300,000-fold (550-fold) enhancement of magneto-optical rotation signal power spectral-density (power amplitude) over the conventional single-beam $Λ-$scheme atomic m…
We investigate evolution of quantum correlations in ensembles of two-qubit nuclear spin systems via nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. We use discord as a measure of quantum correlations and the Werner state as an explicit example. We first introduce different ways of measuring discord and geometric discord in two-qubit systems and then describe the following experimental studies: (a) We quantitatively measure discord for Werner-like states prepared using an entangling pulse sequence. An initial thermal state with zero discord is gradually and periodically transformed into a mixed state wi…
Electron spins in edge or surface modes of topological insulators (TIs) with strong spin-orbit coupling cannot be directly manipulated with microwaves due to the locking of electron spin to its momentum. We show by contrast that a resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (RDNMR) based technique can be used to probe the helical nature of surface conducting states. In such experiments, one applies a radio frequency (RF) field to reorient nuclear spins that then couple to electronic spins by the hyperfine interaction. The spin of the boundary electrons can thereby be modulated, resulting i…
We review and critically evaluate our proposal of a pulse amplification scheme based on two Bose-Einstein condensates inside the resonator of a mode-locked laser. Two condensates are used for compensating the group velocity dispersion. Ultraslow light propagation through the condensate leads to a considerable increase in the cavity round-trip delay time, lowers the effective repetition rate of the laser, and hence scales up the output pulse energy. It has been recently argued that atom-atom interactions would make our proposal even more efficient. However, neither in our original proposal nor …

Nuclear spins support long lived quantum coherence due to weak coupling to the environment, but are difficult to rapidly control using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as a result of the small nuclear magnetic moment. We demonstrate a fast ~ 500 ns nuclear spin phase gate on a 14N nuclear spin qubit intrinsic to a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond. The phase gate is enabled by the hyperfine interaction and off-resonance driving of electron spin transitions. Repeated applications of the phase gate bang-bang decouple the nuclear spin from the environment, locking the spin state for up to ~…
