Hilda-group asteroids librate in Jupiter's interior 3:2 mean motion resonance. We estimate that the Hilda group is observationally complete up to absolute magnitude $H\leq16.3$. This provides a statistically useful sample of thousands of resonant objects, all within a narrow range of semimajor axes, to compare with theoretical expectaitons of their orbital distribution from dynamical theory. We use von Mises-Fisher statistics to calculate the sample mean planes and mean plane uncertainties for the Hilda group and its Hilda, Schubart, and Potomac collisional subfamilies. Although Laplace-Lagrange linear secular theory is considered inapplicable within mean motion resonances, we find that the Laplace plane and the orbital plane of Jupiter are both statistically indistinguishable from the sample mean plane of the Hildas. In future work, we intend to extend this investigation to resonant populations in the Kuiper belt so as to further test the validity of Laplace-Lagrange linear secular theory for the mean planes of resonant populations.
We present the size distribution for Hilda asteroid group using optical survey data obtained by the 8.2 m Subaru Telescope with the Hyper Suprime-Cam. Our unbiased sample consists of 91 Hilda asteroids (Hildas) down to 1~km in diameter. We found that the Hildas' size distribution can be approximated by a single-slope power law in the ~1-10 km diameter range with the best-fit power-law slope of alpha = 0.38 +/- 0.02 in the differential absolute magnitude distribution. Direct comparing the size distribution of Hildas with that of the Jupiter Trojans measured from the same dataset Yoshida & Terai…
Hilda asteroids orbit at the outer edge, or just outside of the Main Belt, occupying the 2:3 mean motion resonance with Jupiter. It is known that the group shows a mixed taxonomy that suggests the mixed origin of Hilda members, having migrated to the current orbit both from the outer Main Belt and from the Trojans swarms. But there are still few observations for comparative studies that help in understanding the Hilda group in deeper details. We identified 125 individual light curves of Hilda asteroids observed by the K2 mission. We found that despite of the mixed taxonomies, the Hilda group h…
We present thermal 24 $μ$m observations from the \textit{Spitzer Space Telescope} of 62 Hilda asteroid group members with diameters ranging from 3 to 12 kilometers. Measurements of the thermal emission when combined with reported absolute magnitudes allow us to constrain the albedo and diameter of each object. From our \textit{Spitzer} sample, we find the mean geometric albedo, $p_{V} =$ 0.07 $\pm$ 0.05 for small (D $<$ 10 km) Hilda group asteroids. This value of $p_{V}$ is greater than and spans a larger range in albedo space than the mean albedo of large (D $\gtrsim$ 10 km) Hilda group aster…
The Hilda asteroids are primitive bodies in resonance with Jupiter whose origin and physical properties are not well understood. Current models posit that these asteroids formed in the outer Solar System and were scattered along with the Jupiter Trojans into their present-day positions during a chaotic episode of dynamical restructuring. In order to explore the surface composition of these enigmatic objects in comparison with an analogous study of Trojans (Emery et al. 2011), we present new near-infrared spectra (0.7-2.5 $μ$m) of 25 Hilda asteroids. No discernible absorption features are appar…
Current models of Solar System evolution posit that the asteroid populations in resonance with Jupiter are comprised of objects scattered inward from the outer Solar System during a period of dynamical instability. In this paper, we present a new analysis of the absolute magnitude and optical color distribution of Hilda asteroids, which lie in the 3:2 mean motion resonance with Jupiter, with the goal of comparing the bulk properties with previously published results from an analogous study of Jupiter Trojans. We report an updated power law fit of the Hilda magnitude distribution through H=14. …
Hilda asteroids and Jupiter Trojans are two low-albedo (p$_{\rm v}$ ~ 0.07) populations for which the Nice model predicts an origin in the primordial Kuiper Belt region. However, recent surveys by WISE and the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) have revealed that ~2% of these objects possess high albedos (p$_{\rm v}$ > 0.15), which might indicate interlopers - that is, objects not formed in the Kuiper Belt - among these two populations. Here, we report spectroscopic observations in the visible and/or near-infrared spectral ranges of twelve high-albedo (p$_{\rm v}$ > 0.15) Hilda asteroids and Jupite…
We present the preliminary analysis of 1023 known asteroids in the Hilda region of the Solar System observed by the NEOWISE component of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). The sizes of the Hildas observed range from $\sim 3 - 200$km. We find no size - albedo dependency as reported by other projects. The albedos of our sample are low, with a weighted mean value $p_V = 0.055\pm0.018$, for all sizes sampled by the NEOWISE survey. We observed a significant fraction of the objects in the two known collisional families in the Hilda population. It is found that the Hilda collisional fami…

The 1950 discovery of activity emanating from asteroid (4015) Wilson-Harrington prompted astronomers to realize comet-like activity is not limited to comets. Since then < 30 active asteroids have been discovered, yet they hold clues about fundamental physical and chemical processes in the solar system. Around half of the activity is attributed to sublimation, highlighting asteroids as a "volatile reservoir" - a dynamical group of minor planets that harbor volatiles. Centaurs, found between the orbits of Jupiter and Neptune, were first recognized in 1977 and represent another reservoir. Active …
We report object 282P/(323137) 2003 BM80 is undergoing a sustained activity outburst, lasting over 15 months thus far. These findings stem in part from our NASA Partner Citizen Science project Active Asteroids (http://activeasteroids.net), which we introduce here. We acquired new observations of 282P via our observing campaign (Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope, Lowell Discovery Telescope, and the Gemini South telescope), confirming 282P was active on UT 2022 June 7, some 15 months after 2021 March images showed activity in the 2021/2022 epoch. We classify 282P as a member of the Quasi-Hil…
The Cybele and Hilda dynamical groups delimit the outer edge of the asteroid belt. Their compositional distribution is a key element to constrain evolutionary models of the Solar System. In this paper, we present a compositional analysis of these populations using spectroscopic observations, SDSS and NEOWISE data. As part of the PRIMASS (Primitive Asteroids Spectroscopic Survey), we acquired visible spectra of 18 objects in Hilda or Cybele groups with the Goodman High Throughput Spectrometer at the 4.1m SOAR telescope and 20 near-IR spectra of Hilda objects with Near Infrared Camera Spectrogra…
Quasi-Hilda asteroid P/2010 H2 (Vales) underwent a spectacular photometric outburst by 7.5 magnitudes (factor of 1000) in 2010. Here, we present our optical observations of this event in the four month period from April 20 to August 10. The outburst, starting UT 2010 April 15.76, released dust particles of total cross-section 17,600 sq km (albedo 0.1 assumed) and mass 1.2e9 kg, this being about 1e-4 of the mass of the nucleus, taken as a sphere of radius 1.5 km and density 500 kg/m3. While the rising phase of the outburst was very steep (brightness doubling time of hours), subsequent fading oc…
Asteroids residing in the first-order mean motion resonances with Jupiter hold important information about the processes that set the final architecture of giant planets. Here we revise current populations of objects in the J2/1 (Hecuba-gap group), J3/2 (Hilda group) and J4/3 (Thule group) resonances. The number of multi-opposition asteroids found is 274 for J2/1, 1197 for J3/2 and 3 for J4/3. Using both hierarchical clustering technique and colour identification we characterise a collisionally-born asteroid family around the object (1911) Schubart in the J3/2 resonance. There is also a looser…
In this work, we investigate the evolution of a primordial belt of asteroids, represented by a large number of massless test particles, under the gravitational effect of migrating Jovian planets in the framework of the jumping-Jupiter model. We perform several simulations considering test particles distributed in the Main Belt, as well as in the Hilda and Trojan groups. The simulations start with Jupiter and Saturn locked in the mutual 3:2 mean motion resonance plus 3 Neptune-mass planets in a compact orbital configuration. Mutual planetary interactions during migration led one of the Neptunes…
We model the long-term evolution of the Hilda collisional family located in the 3/2 mean-motion resonance with Jupiter. Its eccentricity distribution evolves mostly due to the Yarkovsky/YORP effect and assuming that: (i) impact disruption was isotropic, and (ii) albedo distribution of small asteroids is the same as for large ones, we can estimate the age of the Hilda family to be $4_{-1}^{+0}\,{\rm Gyr}$. We also calculate collisional activity in the J3/2 region. Our results indicate that current collisional rates are very low for a 200\,km parent body such that the number of expected events o…
In this work we have estimated 10 collisional ages of 9 families for which for different reasons our previous attempts failed. In general, these are difficult cases that required dedicated effort, such as a new family classifications for asteroids in mean motion resonances, as well as a revision of the classification inside the $3/2$ resonance. Of the families locked in mean motion resonances, we succeeded in determining ages of the families of (1911) Schubart and of the "super-Hilda" family, assuming this is actually a severely eroded original family of (153) Hilda. In the Trojan region we fo…
With the growing numbers of asteroids being discovered, identifying an observationally complete sample is essential for statistical analyses and for informing theoretical models of the dynamical evolution of the solar system. We present an easily implemented method of estimating the empirical observational completeness in absolute magnitude, H_lim, as a function of semi-major axis. Our method requires fewer assumptions and decisions to be made in its application, making results more transportable and reproducible amongst studies that implement it, as well as scalable to much larger datasets of…
The Cybele region, located between the 2J:-1A and 5J:-3A mean-motion resonances, is adjacent and exterior to the asteroid main belt. An increasing density of three-body resonances makes the region between the Cybele and Hilda populations dynamically unstable, so that the Cybele zone could be considered the last outpost of an extended main belt. The presence of binary asteroids with large primaries and small secondaries suggested that asteroid families should be found in this region, but only relatively recently the first dynamical groups were identified in this area. Among these, the Sylvia gr…
The main asteroid belt (MB) is low in mass but dynamically excited. Here we propose a new mechanism to excite the MB during the giant planet ('Nice model') instability, which is expected to have featured repeated close encounters between Jupiter and one or more ice giants ('Jumping Jupiter' -- JJ). We show that, when Jupiter temporarily reaches a high enough level of excitation, both in eccentricity and inclination it induces strong forced vectors of eccentricity and inclination across the MB region. Because during the JJ instability Jupiter's orbit `jumps' around, the forced vectors keep chan…
We measure the mid-plane of the main asteroid belt by using the observational data of a nearly complete and unbiased sample of asteroids, and find that it has inclination $\bar{I}=0.93\pm0.04$ degrees and longitude of ascending node $\barΩ=87.6\pm2.6$ degrees (in J2000 ecliptic-equinox coordinate system). This plane differs significantly from previously published measurements, and it is also distinctly different than the solar system's invariable plane as well as Jupiter's orbit plane. The mid-plane of the asteroid belt is theoretically expected to be a slightly warped sheet whose local normal…
