Long-form video understanding remains challenging for Vision-Language Models (VLMs) due to the inherent tension between computational constraints and the need to capture information distributed across thousands of frames. Existing approaches either sample frames uniformly (risking information loss) or select keyframes in a single pass (with no recovery from poor choices). We propose VideoBrain, an end-to-end framework that enables VLMs to adaptively acquire visual information through learned sampling policies. Our approach features dual complementary agents: a CLIP-based agent for semantic retrieval across the video and a Uniform agent for dense temporal sampling within intervals. Unlike prior agent-based methods that rely on text-only LLMs orchestrating visual tools, our VLM directly perceives frames and reasons about information sufficiency. To prevent models from invoking agents indiscriminately to maximize rewards, we introduce a behavior-aware reward function coupled with a data classification pipeline that teaches the model when agent invocation is genuinely beneficial. Experiments on four long video benchmarks demonstrate that VideoBrain achieves +3.5% to +9.0% improvement over the baseline while using 30-40\% fewer frames, with strong cross-dataset generalization to short video benchmarks. The code is available at https://github.com/junbo-zou/VideoBrain.

Frame sampling is a fundamental problem in video action recognition due to the essential redundancy in time and limited computation resources. The existing sampling strategy often employs a fixed frame selection and lacks the flexibility to deal with complex variations in videos. In this paper, we present a simple, sparse, and explainable frame sampler, termed as Motion-Guided Sampler (MGSampler). Our basic motivation is that motion is an important and universal signal that can drive us to adaptively select frames from videos. Accordingly, we propose two important properties in our MGSampler d…
We address the problem of capturing temporal information for video classification in 2D networks, without increasing their computational cost. Existing approaches focus on modifying the architecture of 2D networks (e.g. by including filters in the temporal dimension to turn them into 3D networks, or using optical flow, etc.), which increases computation cost. Instead, we propose a novel sampling strategy, where we re-order the channels of the input video, to capture short-term frame-to-frame changes. We observe that without bells and whistles, the proposed sampling strategy improves performanc…
A key challenge in video enhancement and action recognition is to fuse useful information from neighboring frames. Recent works suggest establishing accurate correspondences between neighboring frames before fusing temporal information. However, the generated results heavily depend on the quality of correspondence estimation. In this paper, we propose a more robust solution: \emph{sampling and fusing multi-level features} across neighborhood frames to generate the results. Based on this idea, we introduce a new module to improve the capability of 3D convolution, namely, learnable sampling 3D c…

Despite recent progress in video and language representation learning, the weak or sparse correspondence between the two modalities remains a bottleneck in the area. Most video-language models are trained via pair-level loss to predict whether a pair of video and text is aligned. However, even in paired video-text segments, only a subset of the frames are semantically relevant to the corresponding text, with the remainder representing noise; where the ratio of noisy frames is higher for longer videos. We propose FineCo (Fine-grained Contrastive Loss for Frame Sampling), an approach to better l…

We propose a novel scheme for human action recognition in videos, using a 3-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (3D CNN) based classifier. Traditionally in deep learning based human activity recognition approaches, either a few random frames or every $k^{th}$ frame of the video is considered for training the 3D CNN, where $k$ is a small positive integer, like 4, 5, or 6. This kind of sampling reduces the volume of the input data, which speeds-up training of the network and also avoids over-fitting to some extent, thus enhancing the performance of the 3D CNN model. In the proposed video sa…
Online action recognition is an important task for human centered intelligent services, which is still difficult to achieve due to the varieties and uncertainties of spatial and temporal scales of human actions. In this paper, we propose two core ideas to handle the online action recognition problem. First, we combine the spatial and temporal skeleton features to depict the actions, which include not only the geometrical features, but also multi-scale motion features, such that both the spatial and temporal information of the action are covered. Second, we propose a memory group sampling metho…

In recent years, video analysis tools for automatically extracting meaningful information from videos are widely studied and deployed. Because most of them use deep neural networks which are computationally expensive, feeding only a subset of video frames into such algorithms is desired. Sampling the frames with fixed rate is always attractive for its simplicity, representativeness, and interpretability. For example, a popular cloud video API generated video and shot labels by processing only the first frame of every second in a video. However, one can easily attack such strategies by placing …

Video Recognition has drawn great research interest and great progress has been made. A suitable frame sampling strategy can improve the accuracy and efficiency of recognition. However, mainstream solutions generally adopt hand-crafted frame sampling strategies for recognition. It could degrade the performance, especially in untrimmed videos, due to the variation of frame-level saliency. To this end, we concentrate on improving untrimmed video classification via developing a learning-based frame sampling strategy. We intuitively formulate the frame sampling procedure as multiple parallel Marko…

We propose a Spatiotemporal Sampling Network (STSN) that uses deformable convolutions across time for object detection in videos. Our STSN performs object detection in a video frame by learning to spatially sample features from the adjacent frames. This naturally renders the approach robust to occlusion or motion blur in individual frames. Our framework does not require additional supervision, as it optimizes sampling locations directly with respect to object detection performance. Our STSN outperforms the state-of-the-art on the ImageNet VID dataset and compared to prior video object detectio…

Temporal sentence grounding (TSG) aims to identify the temporal boundary of a specific segment from an untrimmed video by a sentence query. All existing works first utilize a sparse sampling strategy to extract a fixed number of video frames and then conduct multi-modal interactions with query sentence for reasoning. However, we argue that these methods have overlooked two indispensable issues: 1) Boundary-bias: The annotated target segment generally refers to two specific frames as corresponding start and end timestamps. The video downsampling process may lose these two frames and take the ad…

The intermediate map responses of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) contain information about an image that can be used to extract contextual knowledge about it. In this paper, we present a core sampling framework that is able to use these activation maps from several layers as features to another neural network using transfer learning to provide an understanding of an input image. Our framework creates a representation that combines features from the test data and the contextual knowledge gained from the responses of a pretrained network, processes it and feeds it to a separate Deep Belief…

In real-time rendering, a 3D scene is modelled with meshes of triangles that the GPU projects to the screen. They are discretized by sampling each triangle at regular space intervals to generate fragments which are then added texture and lighting effects by a shader program. Realistic scenes require detailed geometric models, complex shaders, high-resolution displays and high screen refreshing rates, which all come at a great compute time and energy cost. This cost is often dominated by the fragment shader, which runs for each sampled fragment. Conventional GPUs sample the triangles once per p…

Recent advances in depth sensing technologies allow fast electronic maneuvering of the laser beam, as opposed to fixed mechanical rotations. This will enable future sensors, in principle, to vary in real-time the sampling pattern. We examine here the abstract problem of whether adapting the sampling pattern for a given frame can reduce the reconstruction error or allow a sparser pattern. We propose a constructive generic method to guide adaptive depth sampling algorithms. Given a sampling budget B, a depth predictor P and a desired quality measure M, we propose an Importance Map that highlight…
