We study equilibrium measures for Riesz gases in dimension $d$ with pairwise interaction kernel $|x-y|^{-s}$, subject to radially symmetric external fields. We characterise broad classes of confining potentials for which the equilibrium measure is supported on the unit ball and admits an explicit density. Our main contribution is a converse construction: starting from a prescribed radially symmetric equilibrium density given as a power series in the squared radius, we determine the associated external potential and establish the corresponding Euler-Lagrange variational conditions. A key ingredient in the proof is an identity between two ${}_3F_2$ hypergeometric functions evaluated at unit argument, which is of independent interest. As applications, we identify the external potentials corresponding to equilibrium densities proportional to $(1-|x|^2)^α$, $α>-1$, and show that these potentials can be expressed in terms of Gauss hypergeometric functions ${}_2F_1$, reducing to polynomials for special values of $α$. We also determine the equilibrium measure associated with purely power-type external potentials, often referred to as Freud or Mittag--Leffler potentials in the context of log gases, for which the equilibrium density admits an explicit ${}_2F_1$ representation. Furthermore, we apply our framework to a Coulomb gas in dimension $d+1$ confined by a harmonic potential to the half-space. We derive a necessary condition under which the equilibrium measure is fully supported on the boundary hyperplane of dimension $d$, with the induced density corresponding to that of a Riesz gas with exponent $s=d-1$.
We review what is known, unknown and expected about the mathematical properties of Coulomb and Riesz gases. Those describe infinite configurations of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ interacting with the Riesz potential $\pm |x|^{-s}$ (resp. $-\log|x|$ for $s=0$). Our presentation follows the standard point of view of statistical mechanics, but we also mention how these systems arise in other important situations (e.g. in random matrix theory). The main question addressed in the article is how to properly define the associated infinite point process and characterize it using some (renormalized) equili…
We study a system of N particles with logarithmic, Coulomb or Riesz pairwise interactions, confined by an external potential. We examine a microscopic quantity, the tagged empirical field, for which we prove a large deviation principle at speed N. The rate function is the sum of an entropy term, the specific relative entropy, and an energy term, the renormalized energy introduced in previous works, coupled by the temperature. We deduce a variational property of the sine-beta processes which arise in random matrix theory. We also give a next-to-leading order expansion of the free energy of the …
We study $N$-particle systems in R^d whose interactions are governed by a hypersingular Riesz potential $|x-y|^{-s}$, $s>d$, and subject to an external field. We provide both macroscopic results as well as microscopic results in the limit as $N\to \infty$ for random point configurations with respect to the associated Gibbs measure at scaled inverse temperature $β$. We show that a large deviation principle holds with a rate function of the form `$β$-Energy +Entropy', yielding that the microscopic behavior (on the scale $N^{-1/d}$) of such $N$-point systems is asymptotically determined by the mi…
We give a potential-theoretic characterization of priors which have the property that the corresponding Coulomb gas is "well-behaved" and similarly for more general Riesz gases. This means that the laws of the empirical measures of the corresponding random point process satisfy a Large Deviation Principle with a rate functional which depends continuously on the temperature, in the sense of Gamma-convergence. Equivalently, there is no zeroth-order phase transition at zero temperature, in the mean field regime. This is shown to be the case for the Hausdorff measure on a compact Lipschitz hypersu…
For general dimension $d$ we prove the equidistribution of energy at the micro-scale in $\mathbb R^d$, for the optimal point configurations appearing in Coulomb gases at zero temperature. At the microscopic scale, i.e. after blow-up at the scale corresponding to the interparticle distance, in the case of Coulomb gases we show that the energy concentration is precisely determined by the macroscopic density of points, independently of the scale. This uses the "jellium energy" which was previously shown to control the next-order term in the large particle number asymptotics of the minimum energy.…
We consider the minimal discrete and continuous energy problems on the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^d$ in the Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ in the presence of an external field due to finitely many localized charge distributions on $\mathbb{S}^d$, where the energy arises from the Riesz potential $1/r^s$ ($r$ is the Euclidean distance) for the critical Riesz parameter $s = d - 2$ if $d \geq 3$ and the logarithmic potential $\log(1/r)$ if $d = 2$. Individually, a localized charge distribution is either a point charge or assumed to be rotationally symmetric. The extremal measure solving the conti…
An exact map was established by Lacroix-A-Chez-Toine, Majumdar, and Schehr in [44] between the $N$ complex eigenvalues of complex non-Hermitian random matrices from the Ginibre ensemble, and the positions of $N$ non-interacting Fermions in a rotating trap in the ground state. An important quantity is the statistics of the number of Fermions $\mathcal{N}_a$ in a disc of radius $a$. Extending the work [44] covering Gaussian and rotationally invariant potentials $Q$, we present a rigorous analysis in planar complex and symplectic ensembles, which both represent 2D Coulomb gases. We show that the …
We investigate a one-parameter family of Coulomb gases in two dimensions, which are confined to an ellipse, due to a hard wall constraint, and are subject to an additional external potential. At inverse temperature $β=2$ we can use the technique of planar orthogonal polynomials, borrowed from random matrix theory, to explicitly determine all $k$-point correlation functions for a fixed number of particles $N$. These are given by the determinant of the kernel of the corresponding orthogonal polynomials, which in our case are the Gegenbauer polynomials, or a subset of the asymmetric Jacobi polyno…
We consider a gas of N particles with a general two-body interaction and confined by an external potential in the mean field or high temperature regime, that is when the inverse temperature satisfies $βN \to κ\ge 0$ as $N\to+\infty$. We show that under general conditions on the interaction and the potential, the local fluctuations are described by a Poisson point process in the large N limit. We present applications to Coulomb and Riesz gases on $\mathbb{R}^n$ for any $n\ge 1$, as well as to the edge behavior of $β$-ensembles on $\mathbb{R}$.
The uniform electron gas (UEG), a hypothetical system with finite homogenous electron density composed by an infinite number of electrons in a box of infinite volume, is the practical pillar of density-functional theory (DFT) and the foundation of the most acclaimed approximation of DFT, the local-density approximation (LDA). In the last thirty years, the knowledge of analytical parametrizations of the infinite UEG (IUEG) exchange-correlation energy has allowed researchers to perform a countless number of approximate electronic structure calculations for atoms, molecules, and solids. Recently,…
We consider the random point processes on a measure space X defined by the Gibbs measures associated to a given sequence of N-particle Hamiltonians H^{(N)}. Inspired by the method of Messer-Spohn for proving concentration properties for the laws of the corresponding empirical measures, we propose a number of hypotheses on H^{(N)} which are quite general, but still strong enough to extend the approach of Messer-Spohn. The hypotheses are formulated in terms of the asymptotics of the corresponding mean energy functionals. We show that in many situations the approach even yields a Large Deviation …
