50 years after Thompson's famous triangle inequality for the operator right modulus, we establish a triangle inequality for the quadratic symmetric modulus. We also discuss the corresponding equality cases as well as the infinite-dimensional setting. In addition, we obtain Clarkson--McCarthy type inequalities for the quadratic symmetric modulus. Moreover, we answer several questions raised by Bourin and Lee in [\emph{Bull. Lond. Math. Soc.} \textbf{44} (2012), no.~6, 1085--1102] and [\emph{Internat. J. Math.} \textbf{31} (2026), no.~6, 2650018].
This article improves the triangle inequality for complex numbers, using the Hermite-Hadamard inequality for convex functions. Then, applications of the obtained refinement are presented to include some operator inequalities. The operator applications include numerical radius inequalities and operator mean inequalities.
In this article we introduce the new modulus $\triangle'_{X,ϕ}(\varepsilon)$, for which we prove that in the general case is different from the classical modulus of noncompact convexity. The main result of the paper is showing the continuity of the modulus of noncompact convexity for arbitrary minimalizable (strictly minimalizable) measure of noncompactness on arbitrary metric space.
In 2006 Carbery raised a question about an improvement on the naïve norm inequality $\|f+g\|_p^p \leq 2^{p-1}(\|f\|_p^p + \|g\|_p^p)$ for two functions in $L^p$ of any measure space. When $f=g$ this is an equality, but when the supports of $f$ and $g$ are disjoint the factor $2^{p-1}$ is not needed. Carbery's question concerns a proposed interpolation between the two situations for $p>2$. The interpolation parameter measuring the overlap is $\|fg\|_{p/2}$. We prove an inequality of this type that is stronger than the one Carbery proposed. Moreover, our stronger inequalities are valid for all $…
Motivated by the inequality $\|f+g\|_{2}^{2} \leq \|f\|_{2}^{2}+2\|fg\|_{1}+\|g\|^{2}_{2}$, Carbery (2006) raised the question what is the "right" analogue of this estimate in $L^{p}$ for $p \neq 2$. Carlen, Frank, Ivanisvili and Lieb (2018) recently obtained an $L^{p}$ version of this inequality by providing upper bounds for $\|f+g\|_{p}^{p}$ in terms of the quantities $\|f\|_{p}^{p}, \|g\|_{p}^{p}$ and $\|fg\|_{p/2}^{p/2}$ when $p \in(0,1] \cup [2,\infty)$, and lower bounds when $p \in (-\infty,0) \cup (1,2)$, thereby proving (and improving) the suggested possible inequalities of Carbery. We…
Let $H$ be a graph allowing loops as well as vertex and edge weights. We prove that, for every triangle-free graph $G$ without isolated vertices, the weighted number of graph homomorphisms $\hom(G, H)$ satisfies the inequality \[ \hom(G, H ) \le \prod_{uv \in E(G)} \hom(K_{d_u,d_v}, H )^{1/(d_ud_v)}, \] where $d_u$ denotes the degree of vertex $u$ in $G$. In particular, one has \[ \hom(G, H )^{1/|E(G)|} \le \hom(K_{d,d}, H )^{1/d^2} \] for every $d$-regular triangle-free $G$. The triangle-free hypothesis on $G$ is best possible. More generally, we prove a graphical Brascamp-Lieb type inequalit…
A pseudo-length function defined on an arbitrary group $G = (G,\cdot,e, (\,)^{-1})$ is a map $\ell: G \to [0,+\infty)$ obeying $\ell(e)=0$, the symmetry property $\ell(x^{-1}) = \ell(x)$, and the triangle inequality $\ell(xy) \leqslant \ell(x) + \ell(y)$ for all $x,y \in G$. We consider pseudo-length functions which saturate the triangle inequality whenever $x=y$, or equivalently those that are homogeneous in the sense that $\ell(x^n) = n\,\ell(x)$ for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We show that this implies that $\ell([x,y])=0$ for all $x,y \in G$. This leads to a classification of such pseudo-length …
We characterize preserved extreme points of Lipschitz-free spaces $\mathcal{F}(X)$ in terms of simple geometric conditions on the underlying metric space $(X,d)$. Namely, each preserved extreme point corresponds to a pair of points $p,q$ in $X$ such that the triangle inequality $d(p,q)\leq d(p,r)+d(q,r)$ is uniformly strict for $r$ away from $p,q$. For compact $X$, this condition reduces to the triangle inequality being strict. This result gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of N. Weaver that compact spaces are concave if and only if they have no triple of metrically aligned points.
