Recent discoveries of multi-\textbf{Q} magnetic structures in centrosymmetric compounds have stimulated growing interest in their microscopic origin and observable properties. Here, we calculate the dynamical magnetic structure factor for a double-\textbf{Q} magnetic structure and compare it with that of a single-\textbf{Q} configuration. Our results demonstrate how inelastic neutron scattering can distinguish the double-\textbf{Q} state from competing single-\textbf{Q} states in this square-lattice setting.
We have investigated magnetic structures of the centrosymmetrric skyrmion material Gd2PdSi3 by means of polarized neutron scattering near zero field with an isotope-160Gd-enriched single crystal. In a previous study, magnetic structures in Gd2PdSi3 at low temperatures were studied by resonant X-ray scattering measurements [T. Kurumaji et al. Science 365, 914 (2019)]. The present polarized neutron results confirm that the magnetic structure in zero field has elliptic screw-type magnetic modulation with a propagation vector of (q, 0, 0) with q ~ 0.14 and its equivalents. As the temperature incre…
The experimental realization of magnetic skyrmions in centrosymmetric materials has been driven by theoretical understanding of how a delicate balance of anisotropy and frustration can stabilize topological spin structures in applied magnetic fields. Recently, the centrosymmetric material Gd$_{2}$PdSi$_{3}$ was shown to host a field-induced skyrmion phase, but the skyrmion stabilization mechanism remains unclear. Here, we employ neutron-scattering measurements on an isotopically-enriched polycrystalline Gd$_{2}$PdSi$_{3}$ sample to quantify the interactions that drive skyrmion formation. Our a…
The skyrmion crystal (SkX) characterized by a multiple-q helical spin modulation has been reported as a unique topological state that competes with the single-q helimagnetic order in non-centrosymmetric materials. Here we report the discovery of a rich variety of multiple-q helimagnetic spin structures in the centrosymmetric cubic perovskite SrFeO3. On the basis of neutron diffraction measurements, we have identified two types of robust multiple-q topological spin structures that appear in the absence of external magnetic fields: an anisotropic double-q spin spiral and an isotropic quadruple-q…
Theoretical studies have predicted the existence of topological magnons in honeycomb compounds with zig-zag antiferromagnetic (AFM) order. Here we report the discovery of zig-zag AFM order in the layered and non-centrosymmetric honeycomb nickelate Ni$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$ through a combination of magnetization, specific heat, x-ray and neutron diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. It is the first example of such order in an integer-spin non-centrosymmetric structure ($P$$_6$3$mc$). Further, each of the two distinct sites of the bipartite honeycomb lattice has a unique crystal …

We have investigated the non-centrosymmetric tetragonal heavy-fermion compound CeAuAl3 using muon spin rotation (muSR), neutron diffraction (ND) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. We have also revisited the magnetic, transport and thermal properties. The magnetic susceptibility reveals an antiferromagnetic transition at 1.1 K with a possibility of another magnetic transition near 0.18 K. The heat capacity shows a sharp lambda-type anomaly at 1.1 K in zero-filed, which broadens and moves to higher temperature in applied magnetic field. Our zero-field muSR and ND measurements c…
By the single crystal inelastic neutron scattering the orthoferrite HoFeO3 was studied. We show that the spin dynamics of the Fe subsystem does not change through the spin-reorientation transitions. The observed spectrum of magnetic excitations was analyzed in the frames of linear spin-wave theory. Within this approach the antiferromagnetic exchange interactions of nearest neighbors and next nearest neighbors were obtained for Fe subsystem. Parameters of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions at Fe subsystem were refined. The temperature dependence of the gap in Fe spin-wave spectrum indicates the…

Fe3-xGeTe2 is an itinerant ferromagnet composed of two-dimensional layers weakly connected by van der Waals bonding that shows a variety of intriguing phenomena. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on bulk single crystals of Fe2.75GeTe2 were performed to quantify the magnetic exchange interaction energies and anisotropy. The observed inelastic excitations are indicative of dominant in-plane correlations with negligible magnetic interactions between the layers. A spin-gap of 3.9 meV is observed allowing a measure of the magnetic anisotropy. As the excitations disperse to their maximum ene…
The inelastic neutron scattering spectrum in cuprate superconductors is discussed on the basis of the itinerant-localized duality model for strongly correlated electrons. In Appendix the consistency with recent rigorous theoretical result on ARPES is discussed.
[Ni(HF$_2$)(3-Clpyridine)$_4$]BF$_4$ (NBCT) is a one-dimensional, $S = 1$ spin chain material that shows no magnetic neutron Bragg peaks down temperatures of 0.1 K. Previous work identified NBCT to be in the Haldane phase and near a quantum phase transition as a function of $D/J$ to the large-$D$ quantum paramagnet phase (QPM), where $D$ is the axial single-ion anisotropy and $J$ is the intrachain superexchange. Herein, inelastic neutron scattering results are presented on partially deuterated, $^{11}$B enriched NBCT polycrystalline samples in zero magnetic field and down to temperatures of 0.…
The non-centrosymmetric Weyl semimetal candidate, MoTe$_2$ was investigated through neutron diffraction and transport measurements at pressures up to 1.5 GPa and at temperatures down to 40 mK. Centrosymmetric and non-centrosymmetric structural phases were found to coexist in the superconducting state. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the strength of the electron-phonon coupling is similar for both crystal structures. Furthermore, it was found that by controlling non-hydrostatic components of stress, it is possible to mechanically control the ground state crystal structu…
In this short note, we report on the first inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study on high-energy magnetic excitations in Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. We observed excitations between $\sim$80 meV and $\sim$180 meV. The peak position of the excitations is consistent with the dispersion of a single magnon determined by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurement. Thus, our results demonstrate that INS and RIXS observe identical excitations in iridate oxides, as in La$_2$CuO$_4$.
Using two cold-neutron triple-axis spectrometers we have succeeded in fully mapping out the field-dependent evolution of the non-reciprocal magnon dispersion relations in all magnetic phases of MnSi. The non-reciprocal nature of the dispersion manifests itself in a full asymmetry (non-reciprocity) of the dynamical structure factor $S(q, E, μ_0 H_{int})$ with respect to flipping either the direction of the applied magnetic field $μ_0 H_{int}$, the reduced momentum transfer $q$, or the energy transfer $E$.
Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) is one powerful technique to study the low-energy single-spin dynamics of magnetic materials. A variety of quantum magnets show novel magnetic correlations such as quantum spin liquids. These novel magnetic correlations are beyond the direct detection of INS. In this paper we propose a coincidence technique, coincidence inelastic neutron scattering (cINS), which can detect the two-spin magnetic correlations of the magnetic materials. In cINS there are two neutron sources and two neutron detectors with an additional coincidence detector. Two neutrons from the …
This study examines the increasing complexity in the magnetic properties of small $n$ = 3, 4, 5, 6 spin-1/2 quantum rings. Using an exact diagonalization of the isotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian with nearest and next-nearest neighbor interactions, the energy eigenstates, magnetic specific heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, and inelastic neutron scattering structure factors are determined for variable next-nearest neighbor interactions. Here, it is shown that the presence of a complex spin-mixing, multiple ground states, and non-zero ground states greatly complicate the spin Hamiltonian. Ov…
The discovery of superconductivity in the 122 iron selenide materials above 30 K necessitates an understanding of the underlying magnetic interactions. We present a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of magnetic and semiconducting Ce$_{2}$O$_{2}$FeSe$_{2}$ composed of chains of edge-linked iron selenide tetrahedra. The combined neutron diffraction and inelastic scattering study and density functional calculations confirm the ferromagnetic nature of nearest-neighbour Fe -- Se -- Fe interactions in the ZrCuSiAs-related iron oxyselenide Ce$_{2}$O$_{2}$FeSe$_{2}$. Inelastic measur…
Experimental confirmation of spin gap in antiferromagnetic alternating spin-3/2 chain substances RCrGeO5 (R = Y or 154Sm) by inelastic neutron scattering experiments
Single crystal inelastic neutron scattering is used to study spin wave excitations in the fully polarized state of the frustrated quantum ferro-antiferromagnet BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. The data analysis is based on a Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian that includes as many distinct nearest-neighbor and next-nearest neighbor interactions as allowed by crystal symmetry. All 8 such exchange constants are obtained in a simultaneous fit to over 150 scans across the dispersion manifold. This establishes a definitive quantitative model of this material. It turns out to be substantially different from the one ass…
The spin-nematic state has proved elusive, due to the difficulty of observing the order parameter in experiment. In this article we develop a theory of spin excitations in a field-induced spin-nematic state, and use it to show how a spin-nematic order can be indentified using inelastic neutron scattering. We concentrate on 2-dimensional frustrated ferromagnets, for which a two-sublattice, bond-centered spin-nematic state is predicted to exist over a wide range of parameters. First, to clarify the nature of spin-excitations, we introduce a soluble spin-1 model, and use this to derive a continuu…
Interplay between Heavy Fermions and Crystal Field Excitation in Kondo Lattices. Low-Temperature Thermodynamics and Inelastic Neutron Scattering Spectra of CeNiSn
The magnetic structure and spin-wave excitations in the quasi-square-lattice layered perovskite compound La$_5$Mo$_4$O$_{16}$ were studied by a combination of neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering techniques using polycrystalline sample. Neutron powder diffraction refinement revealed that the magnetic structure is ferrimagnetic in the $ab$ plane with antiferromagnetic stacking along the $c$ axis where the magnetic propagation vector is $\mathbf{k}=\left(0,0,\frac{1}{2}\right)$. The ordered magnetic moments are estimated to be $0.54(2)μ_\text{B}$ for Mo$^{5+}$ ($4d^1$) ions and $…
