Quark-gluon plasma (QGP), when viewed at length scales of order the inverse of its temperature, behaves as a strongly-coupled liquid. However, when it is probed with sufficiently high momentum transfer, asymptotic freedom mandates the presence of quark- and gluon-like quasi-particles. High energy partons within jets can trigger these high-momentum exchanges, making jets valuable probes for revealing the presence of such quasi-particles. Such elastic scatterings are implemented in the Hybrid Model, where a jet parton that scatters is deflected, kicking a medium parton, which recoils. Before and after a scattering, as one and then both partons propagate through the medium, they lose energy and momentum, exciting wakes in the QGP droplet. We use two-point and three-point energy-energy correlators (EECs) to reveal the relevant angular regions at which (modified) parton showers and wakes in the QGP each dominate, offering a new way with which to visualize and constrain the corresponding dynamics. We compare our calculations to recent CMS and ALICE measurements of two-point EECs of charged-particle tracks in jets produced in PbPb collisions. We show that our calculations are closest to the experimental measurements when elastic scattering is included and when the elastically scattered recoil-partons produce their own wakes. We also propose a new variant of the measurement that is especially sensitive to jet wakes.
Understanding the detailed structure of energy flow within jets, a field known as jet substructure, plays a central role in searches for new physics, and precision studies of QCD. Many applications of jet substructure require an understanding of jets initiated by heavy quarks, whose description has lagged behind remarkable recent progress for massless jets. In this Letter, we initiate a study of correlation functions of energy flow operators on beauty and charm jets to illuminate the effects of the intrinsic mass of the elementary particles of QCD. We present a factorization theorem incorporat…
We show that Jet Energy Correlation variables can be used effectively to discover and distinguish a wide variety of boosted light dijet resonances at the LHC through sensitivity to their transverse momentum and color structures.
We introduce an infinite set of jet substructure observables, derived as projections of $N$-point energy correlators, that are both convenient for experimental studies and maintain remarkable analytic properties derived from their representations in terms of a finite number of light ray operators. We show that these observables can be computed using tracking or charge information with a simple reweighting by integer moments of non-perturbative track or fragmentation functions. Our results for the projected $N$-point correlators are analytic functions of $N$, allowing us to derive resummed resu…
We develop an effective field theory (EFT) framework to perform an analytic calculation for energy correlator observables computed on groomed heavy-quark jets. A soft-drop grooming algorithm is applied to a jet initiated by a massive quark to minimize soft contamination effects such as pile-up and multi-parton interactions. We specifically consider the two-particle energy correlator as an initial application of this EFT framework to compute heavy quark jet substructure. We find that there are different regimes for the event shapes, depending on the size of the measured correlator observable, t…

Jet energy transported to quark-gluon plasma during jet-medium interaction excites the QGP medium and creates energetic thermal partons -- recoil particles or recoils. Modification of the jet structure in heavy ion collisions is studied using \textsc{martini}, in which recoil simulation is enabled. In large systems such as central Pb-Pb collisions, the recoil effect is expected to be critical due to strong jet-medium interaction. We show the results of the jet mass function and jet shape function are improved when the recoil particles are included in the reconstructed jets. We conclude that th…

As an improvement of the QCD sum rule method to study modifications of light vector mesons in nuclear matter and/or at finite temperature, we calculate the Wilson coefficients of all independent gluonic non-scalar operators up to dimension 6 in the operator product expansion (OPE) of the vector channel for light quarks. To obtain the gluon part of the light quark OPE from the heavy quark one, we also compute the heavy quark expansion of the relevant quark condensates. Together with the results for the quark operators that are already available in the literature, this completes the OPE of the v…
We present a unique signal of jet-induced medium excitations: the enhancement of baryon-to-meson ratios around the quenched jets.To illustrate this, we study jet-particle correlations and the distributions of jet-induced identified particles with respect to the jet direction in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC via a multi-phase transport model. We find a strong enhancement of baryon-to-meson ratios for associated particles at intermediate transverse momentum around the triggered jets in Pb+Pb collisions relative to p+p collisions, due to the coalescence of jet-excited medium partons.Since the lost e…
We consider the case, in QCD, of a single jet propagating within a strongly interacting fluid, of finite extent. Interactions lead to the appearance of a source of energy-momentum within the fluid. The remnant jet that escapes the container is analyzed along with portions of the medium excited by the jet. We study the effect of a static versus a semi-realistic expanding medium, with jets traveling inward versus outward. We consider the medium response via recoils in partonic scatterings based on a weakly-coupled description and its combination with hydrodynamical medium response based on a str…
Energy Correlators measure the energy deposited in multiple detectors as a function of the angles between the detectors. In this paper, we analytically compute the three particle correlator in the collinear limit in QCD for quark and gluon jets, and also in $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory. We find an intriguing duality between the integrals for the energy correlators and infrared finite Feynman parameter integrals, which maps the angles of the correlators to dual momentum variables. In $\mathcal{N}=4$, we use this duality to express our result as a rational sum of simple Feynman integr…
We study the effects of expansion and viscous corrections on the hydrodynamical medium response to a high energy jet parton. More specifically, using a semi-analytical Gubser solution to relativistic fluid dynamics, modifications to the formed Mach cone, diffusive wake, and the momentum flow of the medium response along and perpendicular to the jet particle, are analyzed mode-by-mode. This should provide intuition and guidance for analyses of the experimentally measured jet sub-structure in heavy-ion collisions.
A formalism to study the mode-by-mode response to the energy deposition of external hard partons propagating in a relativistic fluid is developed, based on a semi-analytical solution of conformal fluid-dynamics. The soft particle production resulting from the jet-medium interaction is calculated and the recoil of the viscous medium is studied for different orientations of the relativistic jets, and for different values of the specific shear viscosity $η/s$.
Jet quenching in heavy ion collisions is expected to be accompanied by recoil effects, but unambiguous signals for the induced medium response have been difficult to identify so far. Here, we argue that modern jet substructure measurements can improve this situation qualitatively since they are sensitive to the momentum distribution inside the jet. We show that the groomed subjet shared momentum fraction $z_g$, and the girth of leading and subleading subjets signal recoil effects with dependencies that are absent in a recoilless baseline. We find that recoil effects can explain most of the med…
