Isometric tensor network states (isoTNS) generalize the isometric form of the one-dimensional matrix product states (MPS) to tensor networks in two and higher dimensions. Here, we introduce an alternative isometric form for isoTNS by incorporating auxiliary tensors to represent the orthogonality hypersurface. We implement the time evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm on this new isometric form and benchmark the method by computing ground states and the real time evolution of the transverse field Ising model in two dimensions on large square lattices of up to 1250 sites. Our results demonstrate that isoTNS can efficiently capture the entanglement structure of two-dimensional area law states. The short-time dynamics is also accurately reproduced even at the critical point. Our isoTNS formulation further allows for a natural extension to different lattice geometries, such as the honeycomb or kagome latice.
Tensor network states (TNS) are a promising but numerically challenging tool for simulating two-dimensional (2D) quantum many-body problems. We introduce an isometric restriction of the TNS ansatz that allows for highly efficient contraction of the network. We consider two concrete applications using this ansatz. First, we show that a matrix-product state representation of a 2D quantum state can be iteratively transformed into an isometric 2D TNS. Second, we introduce a 2D version of the time-evolving block decimation algorithm (TEBD$^2$) for approximating the ground state of a Hamiltonian as …
Recently, a class of tensor networks called isometric tensor network states (isoTNS) was proposed which generalizes the canonical form of matrix product states to tensor networks in higher dimensions. While this ansatz allows for efficient numerical computations, it remained unclear which phases admit an isoTNS representation. In this work, we show that two-dimensional string-net liquids, which represent a wide variety of topological phases including discrete gauge theories, admit an exact isoTNS representation. We further show that the isometric form can be preserved after applying a finite d…
Several tensor networks are built of isometric tensors, i.e. tensors satisfying $W^\dagger W = \mathrm{I}$. Prominent examples include matrix product states (MPS) in canonical form, the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA), and quantum circuits in general, such as those needed in state preparation and quantum variational eigensolvers. We show how gradient-based optimization methods on Riemannian manifolds can be used to optimize tensor networks of isometries to represent e.g. ground states of 1D quantum Hamiltonians. We discuss the geometry of Grassmann and Stiefel manifolds, …
The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) combines classical and quantum resources in order simulate classically intractable quantum states. Amongst other variables, successful VQE depends on the choice of variational ansatz for a problem Hamiltonian. We give a detailed description of a quantum circuit version of the 2D isometric tensor network (isoTNS) ansatz which we call qisoTNS. We benchmark the performance of qisoTNS on two different 2D spin 1/2 Hamiltonians. We find that the ansatz has several advantages. It is qubit efficient with the number of qubits allowing for access to some exponen…
We investigate the computational power of the recently introduced class of isometric tensor network states (isoTNSs), which generalizes the isometric conditions of the canonical form of one-dimensional matrix-product states to tensor networks in higher dimensions. We discuss several technical details regarding the implementation of isoTNSs-based algorithms and compare different disentanglers -- which are essential for an efficient handling of isoTNSs. We then revisit the time evolving block decimation for isoTNSs ($\text{TEBD}^2$) and explore its power for real time evolution of two-dimensiona…

Differentiable programming is a new programming paradigm which enables large scale optimization through automatic calculation of gradients also known as auto-differentiation. This concept emerges from deep learning, and has also been generalized to tensor network optimizations. Here, we extend the differentiable programming to tensor networks with isometric constraints with applications to multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA) and tensor network renormalization (TNR). By introducing several gradient-based optimization methods for the isometric tensor network and comparing with …

Tensor network states are expected to be good representations of a large class of interesting quantum many-body wave functions. In higher dimensions, their utility is however severely limited by the difficulty of contracting the tensor network, an operation needed to calculate quantum expectation values. Here we introduce a method for the time-evolution of three-dimensional isometric tensor networks which respects the isometric structure and therefore renders contraction simple through a special canonical form. Our method involves a tetrahedral site-splitting which allows to move the orthogona…
We describe the use of tensor networks to numerically determine wave functions of interacting two-dimensional fermionic models in the continuum limit. We use two different tensor network states: one based on the numerical continuum limit of fermionic projected entangled pair states obtained via a tensor network formulation of multi-grid, and another based on the combination of the fermionic projected entangled pair state with layers of isometric coarse-graining transformations. We first benchmark our approach on the two-dimensional free Fermi gas then proceed to study the two-dimensional inter…
To explore correlated electrons in the presence of local and non-local disorder, the Blackman-Esterling-Berk method for averaging over off-diagonal disorder is implemented into dynamical mean-field theory using tensor notation. The impurity model combining disorder and correlations is solved using the recently developed fork tensor-product state solver, which allows one to calculate the single particle spectral functions on the real-frequency axis. In the absence of off-diagonal hopping, we establish exact bounds of the spectral function of the non-interacting Bethe lattice with coordination n…
