Electron-boson coupling in unconventional superconductors is one of the key parameters in understanding the superconducting pairing symmetry. Here, we report definitive photoemission evidence of electron-spin exciton coupling in the iron-based superconductor CaKFe4As4, obtained via high-resolution ARPES. Our study identifies a distinct kink structure on the α band, observable only in the superconducting phase and closely linked with the superconductivity, indicative of strong electron-boson interactions. Notably, this kink structure corresponds to two distinct bosonic modes at 11 meV and 13 meV, aligning with spin resonance modes previously observed in inelastic neutron scattering experiments. This alignment underscores the significant role of antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the pairing mechanism of this superconductor. Furthermore, the unique momentum-dependent and orbital-selective properties of the coupling revealed by ARPES provide profound insights into the pairing symmetry, suggesting predominantly s_+- wave pairing facilitated by spin fluctuations. Our findings not only highlight the pivotal role of spin resonance in the superconductivity of CaKFe4As4 but also enhance understanding of the electron-spin exciton interactions in unconventional superconductors.
We examine the normal-state temperature and doping dependence of the Hall coefficient in the context of a pair-fluctuation scenario, based on a model where itinerant electrons are hybridized with localized electron pairs via a charge exchange term. We show that an anomalous behavior of the Hall effect, qualitatively similar to that observed in high-Tc superconductors, can be attributed to the non-Fermi liquid properties of the single-particle spectral function which exhibits pseudogap features. Our calculations are based on a dynamical mean-field procedure which relates the transport coefficie…
We compare efforts to extract self energies and fluctuation spectra of the cuprates using optical and photoemission techniques. The fluctuations have contributions from both the coherent and incoherent parts of the band, which are spread over the full bare bandwidth of >2eV. Many experimental studies concentrate on the coherent part of the band and hence miss higher energy fluctuations. Our study establishes the universal presence of high energy bosonic fluctuations across various spectroscopies as a key ingredient in the high temperature superconducting cuprates.
We investigate the photoemission-type spectrum in a cold Fermi gas which was recently measured by JILA group [J. T. Stewart {\it et al}., Nature \textbf{454}, 744 (2008)]. This quantity gives us very useful information about single-particle properties in the BCS-BEC crossover. In this letter, including pairing fluctuations within a $T$-matrix theory, as well as effects of a harmonic trap within the local density approximation, we show that spatially inhomogeneous pairing fluctuations due to the trap potential is an important key to understand the observed spectrum. In the crossover region, whi…
In the course of seeking the microscopic mechanism of superconductivity in cuprate high temperature superconductors, the pseudogap phase\textemdash the very abnormal 'normal' state on the hole-doped side\textemdash has proven to be as big of a quandary as superconductivity itself. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful tool for assessing the momentum-dependent phenomenology of the pseudogap, and recent technological developments have permitted a more detailed understanding. This report reviews recent progress in understanding the relationship between superconductivity …
The band structures of pure and hole doped La$_2$CuO$_4$ with antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin-fluctuations are calculated and compared to spectral weights of ARPES. It is shown that observations of coexisting Fermi surface (FS) arcs and closed FS pockets are consistent with modulated AFM spin fluctuations of varying wave lengths. Large variations of strong spin fluctuations make the outer part of the FS break diffuse at low doping. This part of the FS is suppressed at high doping when spin fluctuations are weak. The resulting superimposed spectral weight has features both from FS arcs and closed …
We measure the electronic structure of FeSe from within individual orthorhombic domains. Enabled by an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy beamline with a highly focused beamspot (nano-ARPES), we identify clear stripe-like orthorhombic domains in FeSe with a length scale of approximately 1-5~$μ$m. Our photoemission measurements of the Fermi surface and band structure within individual domains reveal a single electron pocket at the Brillouin zone corner. This result provides clear evidence for a one-electron pocket electronic structure of FeSe, observed without the application of uniaxial…
Electronic structures of the quantum critical superconductor beta-YbAlB4 and its polymorph alpha-YbAlB4 are investigated by using bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. From the Yb 3d core level spectra, the values of the Yb valence are estimated to be ~2.73 and ~2.75 for alpha- and beta-YbAlB4, respectively, thus providing clear evidence for valence fluctuations. The valence band spectra of these compounds also show Yb2+ peaks at the Fermi level. These observations establish an unambiguous case of a strong mixed valence at quantum criticality for the first time among heavy ferm…
We present first-principles multiband spin susceptibility calculations within the random-phase approximation for four isostructural superconducting PuCoIn$_5$, PuCoGa$_5$, PuRhGa$_5$, and nonsuperconducting UCoGa$_5$ actinides. The results show that a strong peak in the spin-fluctuation dressed self-energy is present around 0.5 eV in all materials, which is mostly created by 5$f$ electrons. These fluctuations couple to the single-particle spectrum and give rise to a peak-dip-hump feature, characteristic of the coexistence of itinerant and localized electronic states. Results are in quantitativ…
Alkaline-earth iron arsenide (122) is one of the most studied families of iron-based superconductors, especially for angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. While extensive photoemission results have been obtained, the surface complexity of 122 caused by its charge-non-neutral surface is rarely considered. Here, we show that the surface of 122 can be neutralized by potassium deposition. In potassium-coated BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.7}$P$_{0.3}$)$_2$, the surface-induced spectral broadening is strongly suppressed, and hence the coherent spectra that reflect the intrinsic bulk electronic state recover.…
We show that the so-called kinks and waterfalls observed in angle-resolved photoemission spectra of La2-xSrxCuO4, a prototypical high-Tc superconducting cuprate, result from the coupling of quasiparticles with two distinct nearly critical collective modes with finite characteristic wave vectors, typical of charge and spin fluctuations near a stripe instability. Both phonon-like charge and spin collective modes are needed to account for the kinked quasiparticle dispersions. This clarifies the long-standing question whether kinks are due to phonons or spin waves and the nature of the bosonic med…
We present reliable many-body calculations for the t-t'-t''-U Hubbard model that explain in detail the results of recent angle-resolved photoemission experiments on electron-doped high-temperature superconductors. The origin of the pseudogap is traced to two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations whose calculated temperature dependent correlation length also agrees with recent neutron scattering measurements. We make specific predictions for photoemission, for neutron scattering and for the phase diagram.
Despite over two decades of intense research efforts, the origin of high-temperature superconductivity in the copper oxides remains elusive. Angle-resolved photoemission experiments (ARPES) revealed a kink in the dispersion relations (energy vs. wavevector) of electronic states in the cuprates at binding energies of 50-80 meV, and raised the hope that this anomaly could be key to understanding high-temperature superconductivity. The kink is often interpreted in terms of interactions between the electrons and a bosonic field. While there is no consensus on the nature of the bosons or even wheth…
We perform core-level X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and electronic Raman scattering studies of electronic structures and spin fluctuations in the bulk samples of the nickelate oxide NdNiO$_2$. According to Nd $3d$ and O $1s$ XPS spectra, we conclude that NdNiO$_2$ has a large transfer energy. From the analysis of the main line of the Ni $2p_{3/2}$ XPS, we confirm the NiO$_2$ planes in NdNiO$_2$ are of Mott-Hubbard type in the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen scheme. The two-magnon peak in the Raman scattering provides direct evidence for the strong spin-fluctuation in NdNiO$_2$. The peak positio…
We have performed high resolution angle resolved photoemission (ARPES) studies on electron doped cuprate superconductors Sm2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.10, 0.15, 0.18), Nd2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.15) and Eu2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.15). Imaginary parts of the electron removal self energy show step-like features due to an electron-bosonic mode coupling. The step-like feature is seen along both nodal and anti-nodal directions but at energies of 50 and 70 meV, respectively, independent of the doping and rare earth element. Such energy scales can be understood as being due to preferential coupling to half- and full-breathing mod…
Combining the results of tunneling, photoemission and thermodynamic studies, the pseudogap is unambiguously demonstrated to be caused by Van Hove nesting: a splitting of the density of states peak at $(π, 0)$. The fact that the splitting remains symmetric about the Fermi level over an extended doping range indicates that the Van Hove singularity is pinned to the Fermi level. Despite these positive results, an ambiguity remains as to what instability causes the pseudogap. Charge or spin density waves, superconducting fluctuations, and flux phases all remain viable possibilities. This ambiguity …
We develop a novel self-consistent approach for studying the angle resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) of a hole in the t-J-Holstein model giving perfect agreement with numerically exact Diagrammatic Monte Carlo data at zero temperature for all regimes of electron-phonon coupling. Generalizing the approach to finite temperatures we find that the anomalous temperature dependence of the ARPES in undoped cuprates is explained by cooperative interplay of coupling of the hole to magnetic fluctuations and strong electron-phonon interaction.
We report the Fermi surfaces of the superconductor Sr2RuO4 and the non-superconductor Sr1.8Ca0.2RuO4 probed by bulk-sensitive high-energy angle-resolved photoemission. It is found that there is one square-shaped hole-like, one square-shaped electron-like and one circle-shaped electron-like Fermi surface in both compounds. These results provide direct evidence for nesting instability giving rise to magnetic fluctuations. Our study clarifies that the electron correlation effects are changed with composition depending on the individual band.
We report x-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy of the electronic structure in the normal state of metallic YFe2Ge2. The data reveal evidence for large fluctuating spin moments on the Fe sites, as indicated by exchange multiplets appearing in the Fe 3s core level photoemission spectra, even though the compound does not show magnetic order. The magnitude of the multiplet splitting is comparable to that observed in the normal state of the Fe-pnictide superconductors. This shows a connection between YFe2Ge2 and the Fe-based superconductors even though it contains neither pnictogens nor …
We propose a quantitative model for triplet superconductivity in Sr_2RuO_4 based on first principles calculations for the electronic structure and magnetic susceptibility. The superconductivity is due to ferromagnetic spin fluctuations, that are strong at small wave vectors. The calculated effective mass renormalization, renormalized susceptibility, and superconducting critical temperature are all in good agreement with experiment. The most stable superconducting solution has order parameters of comparable magnitude on all three sheets of the Fermi surface. We also propose an explanation of th…
A phenomenological spin-fluctuation analysis (Ref. 1), based upon inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data for ${\rm YBCO}_{6.6}(T_c=61K)$, is used to calculate the functional derivative of the d-wave eigenvalue $λ_d$ of the linearized gap equation with respect to the imaginary part of the spin susceptibility $χ''(q,ω)$ at 70K. For temperatures near $T_c$, the variation of $T_c$ with respect to $χ''(q,ω)$ is proportional to this functional derivative. Based on this, we discuss how different parts of the $q$ and $ω$ dependent spin-fluctuati…
The lack of nesting of the electron and hole Fermi-surface sheets in the Fe-based superconductor LiFeAs, with a critical temperature of 18 K, has led to questions as to whether the origin of superconductivity in this material might be different from other Fe-based superconductors. Both angle-resolved photoemission and quasiparticle interference experiments have reported fully gapped superconducting order parameters with significant anisotropy. The system is also of interest because relatively strong correlations seem to be responsible for significant renormalization of the hole bands. Here we …
Magnetic inelastic neutron scattering (INS) studies of iron-based superconductors reveal a strongly temperature-dependent spin-fluctuation spectrum in the normal conducting state, which develops a prominent low-energy resonance feature when entering the superconducting state. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) allow to study the fingerprints of fluctuation modes via their interactions with electronic quasiparticles. We calculate such fingerprints in 122 iron pnictides using an experimentally motivated spin-fluctuation spectrum and make a…
We study the spectral function $A_k (ω)$ and the optical conductivity $σ_1 (ω)$ for a system of fermions interacting with their collective spin fluctuations (the spin-fermion model), and apply the results to optimally doped cuprates in the normal state. We show that there is no qualitative distinction between hot and cold regions in the Brillouin zone - in both cases, there exists a wide range of frequencies where the width of the peak in $A_k (ω)$ scales linearly with $ω$. We demonstrate that $σ_1 (ω)$ is inversely linear in $ω$ up to very high frequencies. We argue that these results agree {…
Zero field and longitudinal field muon spin relaxation measurements have been performed in optimally doped and overdoped superconductors LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ in order to investigate the magnetic fluctuation over a wide range of temperature and longitudinal field. We have observed no sign of magnetic fluctuation against temperature in the muons' time window (10$^{-5}\sim$ 10$^{-9}$s). Considering the current results and other results, i.e., spin fluctuation observed by neutron scattering, pseudogap-like behaviors by NMR and photoemission spectroscopy, it is suggested that not only the spin fluc…
The superconducting order parameter of the first heavy-fermion superconductor CeCu2Si2 is currently under debate. A key ingredient to understand its superconductivity and physical properties is the quasiparticle dispersion and Fermi surface, which remains elusive experimentally. Here we present measurements from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results emphasize the key role played by the Ce 4f electrons for the low-temperature Fermi surface, highlighting a band-dependent conduction-f electron hybridization. In particular, we find a very heavy quasi-two-dimensional electron band …
We have performed Ce $L_3$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Ce $4d$-$4f$ resonant photoemission spectroscopy (PES) on single crystals of CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$BiS$_2$ for $x=0.0$ and 0.5 in order to investigate the Ce $4f$ electronic states. In the Ce $L_3$-edge XAS, mixed valence of Ce was found in the $x=0.0$ sample and the F-doping suppresses it, which is consistent with the results on polycrystalline samples. As for the resonant PES, we found that the Ce $4f$ electrons in both $x=0.0$ and $0.5$ systems respectively form a flat band at 1.0 eV and 1.4 eV below the Fermi level and there…
Recent observation of a "kink" in single-particle dispersion in photoemission experiments on cuprate superconductors has initiated a heated debate over the issue of a boson that mediates the pairing in cuprates. If the "kink" is indeed caused by interaction with a bosonic excitation, then there are two possible candidates: phonons and spin fluctuations. Here, the role of anti-ferromagnetic spin fluctuations in shaping the phase diagram of cuprate superconductors will be discussed. By using the local (momentum-integrated) dynamic spin susceptibility, recently measured in neutron scattering expe…
We show that in Sr2RuO4 the Fermi surface geometry as inferred from angle resolved photoemission experiments has important implications for a pairing interaction dominated by incommensurate, strongly anisotropic, spin fluctuations. For a spin fluctuation spectrum consistent with inelastic neutron scattering experiments the system is close to an accidental degeneracy between even parity spin singlet and odd parity spin triplet channels. This opens the possibility of a mixed parity order parameter state in Sr2RuO4. We determine the stable and metastable order parameter phases at low temperatures…
We show that, at weak to intermediate coupling, antiferromagnetic fluctuations enhance d-wave pairing correlations until, as one moves closer to half-filling, the antiferromagnetically-induced pseudogap begins to suppress the tendency to superconductivity. The accuracy of our approach is gauged by detailed comparisons with Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The negative pressure dependence of Tc and the existence of photoemission hot spots in electron-doped cuprate superconductors find their natural explanation within this approach.
In a two-band superconductor, two qualitatively different fluctuation modes related to the gap modules contribute to free energy and heat capacity, in addition to the phase fluctuations. The first mode has divergent temperature behaviour since it accounts for the critical fluctuations around the phase transition point, Tc, along with pseudo-critical ones associated with former instability of the weaker-superconductivity component. The involvement of these two factors, competing under interband interaction, results in the Ginzburg number which increases with Tc non-monotonically, allowing the r…
We have analyzed the quasiparticle dispersion and ARPES-spectral density for Sr2CuO2Cl2 and Ca2CuO2Cl2 antiferromagnetic insulators along basic symmetric directions of the Brillouin zone (BZ) in a framework of an extended tight binding method (ETBM) with explicit account for intracell strong electron correlations. The quasiparticle dispersion is in a good agreement with ARPES- data. At the top of valence band we found a narrow impurity-like virtual level with the spectral weight proportional to the concentration of spin fluctuations. A pseudogap between the virtual level and the top of the val…
The electronic structure in the normal state of CeFeAsO0.89F0.11 oxypnictide superconductors has been investigated with x-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy. All the data exhibit signatures of Fe d-electron itinerancy. Exchange multiplets appearing in the Fe 3s core level indicate the presence of itinerant spin fluctuations. These findings suggest that the underlying physics and the origin of superconductivity in these materials are likely to be quite different from those of the cuprate high-temperature superconductors. These materials provide opportunities for elucidating the role …
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are presented which show the abrupt development of new oxygen lattice vibrations near the doping-induced metal-insulator transition in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4). A direct correlation is established between these lattice modes and the electronic susceptibility (as measured by photoemission) inferring that such modes mix strongly with charge fluctuations. This electron-lattice coupling can be characterized as a localized one-dimensional response of the lattice to short-ranged metallic charge fluctuations.
The superconducting state of a two-dimensional d-p model is studied from the spin fluctuation point of view by using a strong coupling theory. The fluctuation exchange (FLEX) approximatoin is employed to calculate the spin fluctuations and the superconducting gap functions self-consistently in the optimal- and over-doped regions of hole concentration. The gap function has a symmetry of d_{x^2 - y^2} type and develops below the transition temperature T_c more rapidly than in the BCS model. Its saturation value at the maximum is about 10 T_c. When the spin fluctuation-induced superconductivity i…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on the recently discovered superconduc- tors in the KFe2Se2 family with critical temperatures up to - 33K suggest that no Fermi pockets of hole character centered on the Γ point of the Brillouin zone are present, in contrast to all other known ferropnictide and ferrochalcogenide superconductors. Using a fluctuation exchange approximation and a 5-orbital tight-binding description of the band structure, we calculate the effective pairing interaction. We find that the pairing state in this system is most likely to have d-wave symmetry due to …
We report a systematic study of normal state Nernst effect in the electron-doped cuprates Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4-δ}$ over a wide range of doping (0.05$\leq x \leq$0.21) and temperature. At low temperatures, we observed a notable vortex Nernst signal above T$_c$ in the underdoped films, but no such normal state vortex Nernst signal is found in the overdoped region. The superconducting fluctuations in the underdoped region are most likely incoherent phase fluctuations as found in hole-doped cuprates. At high temperatures, a large normal state Nernst signal is found at dopings from slightly unde…
Theories based on the coupling between spin fluctuations and fermionic quasiparticles are among the leading contenders to explain the origin of high-temperature superconductivity, but estimates of the strength of this interaction differ widely. Here we analyze the charge- and spin-excitation spectra determined by angle-resolved photoemission and inelastic neutron scattering, respectively, on the same crystals of the high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.6. We show that a self-consistent description of both spectra can be obtained by adjusting a single parameter, the spin-fermion coupling c…
We present an overview of various theoretical methods with detailed emphasis on an intermediate Coulomb-U coupling model. This model is based on material-specific ab-initio band structure from which correlation effects are computed via self-consistent GW-based self-energy corrections arising from spin-fluctuations. We apply this approach to four isostructural intermetallic actinides PuCoIn5, PuCoGa5, PuRhGa5 belonging to the Pu-115 family, and UCoGa5, a member of the U-115 family. The 115 families share the property of spin-orbit split density of states enabling substantial spin fluctuations a…
We study the pairing mechanism in iron pnictide superconductors based on the five-orbital Hubbard-Holstein model. Due to Fe-ion oscillations, the s-wave superconducting (SC) state without sign reversal (s_{++}-wave state) is induced by orbital fluctuations by using realistic model parameters. The virtue of the present theory is that the famous empirical relation between Tc and the As-Fe-As bond angle is automatically explained, since the electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling that creates the orbital fluctuations is the strongest when the As$_4$-tetrahedron is regular. The negative iron isotope effec…
A series of LiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As compounds with different Co concentrations have been studied by transport, optical spectroscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance. We observed a Fermi liquid to non-Fermi liquid to Fermi liquid (FL-NFL-FL) crossover alongside a monotonic suppression of the superconductivity with increasing Co content. In parallel to the FL-NFL-FL crossover, we found that both the low-energy spin fluctuations and Fermi surface nesting are enhanced and then diminished, strongly suggesting that the NFL behavior in LiFe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$As is…
The role of collective modes in various experiments on the cuprates is investigated. We calculate the neutron scattering, photoemission (ARPES), and Raman scattering intensities below $T_c$ within the fluctuation-exchange (FLEX) approximation for the two-dimensional Hubbard model. It is shown that the large peak in the dynamical spin susceptibility arises from a weakly damped spin-density-wave collective mode. This gives rise to a dip between the sharp low energy peak and the higher binding energy hump in the ARPES spectrum. Furthermore, we show that the collective mode of the amplitude fluctu…
We use inelastic neutron scattering to study energy and wave vector dependence of spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$, derived from SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ iron pnictide superconductors. Our data reveals the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations at wave vectors $\textbf{Q}_{\rm AF}$=(1,0) and $\textbf{Q}_{\rm FM}$=(0,0)/(2,0), respectively. By comparing neutron scattering results with those of dynamic mean field theory calculation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that both AF and FM spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$…
In the iron pnictide superconductors, two distinct unconventional mechanisms of superconductivity have been put forth: One is mediated by spin fluctuations leading to the s+- state with sign change of superconducting gap between the hole and electron bands, and the other is orbital fluctuations which favor the s++ state without sign reversal. Here we report direct observation of peculiar momentum-dependent anisotropy in the superconducting gap from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (Tc=30 K). The large anisotropy found only in the electron Fermi surface (FS) …
