We theoretically discover possible dc-current induction and high-harmonic generation from photodriven chiral fermions in B20-type semimetals irradiated with circularly polarized light as nonlinear optical responses with several unconventional properties. First, we find multiple sign changes of the induced bulk dc photocurrent as a function of light parameters, which is ascribed to the nature of asymmetric photon-dressed bands in chiral systems. Moreover, we observe a parity-dependent directivity of high-harmonic generation where the odd- and even-order harmonics have intensities only in directions perpendicular and parallel to the polarization plane, respectively, which can be understood from dynamical symmetry of the present photodriven chiral systems.
Rectified electric current induced by irradiating light, so-called photocurrent, is an established phenomenon in optoelectronic physics. In this paper, we present a comprehensive classification of the photocurrent response arising from the parity violation in bulk systems. We clarify the contrasting role of $\mathcal{T}$- and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetries and consequently find a new type of photocurrent phenomena characteristic of parity-violating magnets, intrinsic Fermi surface effect and gyration current. Especially, the gyration current is induced by the circularly-polarized light and it is th…
The nonlinear optical responses from topological semimetals are crucial in both understanding the fundamental properties of quantum materials and designing next-generation light-sensors or solar-cells. However, previous work was focusing on the optical effects from bulk states only, disregarding topological surface responses. Here we propose a new (hitherto unknown) surface-only topological photocurrent response from chiral Fermi arcs. Using the ideal topological chiral semimetal RhSi as a representative, we quantitatively compute the topologically robust photocurrents from Fermi arcs on diffe…
As a fascinating topological phase of matter, Weyl semimetals host chiral fermions with distinct chiralities and spin textures. Optical excitations involving those chiral fermions can induce exotic carrier responses, and in turn lead to novel optical phenomena. Here, we discover strong coherent chiral terahertz emission from the Weyl semimetal TaAs and demonstrate unprecedented manipulation over its polarization on a femtosecond timescale. Such polarization control is achieved via the colossal ultrafast photocurrents in TaAs arising from the circular or linear photogalvanic effect. We unravel …
The absence of mirror symmetry, or chirality, is behind striking natural phenomena found in systems as diverse as DNA and crystalline solids. A remarkable example occurs when chiral semimetals with topologically protected band degeneracies are illuminated with circularly polarized light. Under the right conditions, the part of the generated photocurrent that switches sign upon reversal of the light's polarization, known as the circular photogalvanic effect, is predicted to depend only on fundamental constants. The conditions to observe quantization are non-universal, and depend on material par…
The generation of photocurrent in an ideal two-dimensional Dirac spectrum is symmetry-forbidden. In sharp contrast, we show that three-dimensional Weyl semimetals can generically support significant photocurrent generations due to the combination of inversion symmetry breaking and finite tilts of the Weyl spectra. Symmetry properties, chirality relations and various dependences on the system and light sources are explored in details. Our results suggest that noncentrosymmetric Weyl materials can be advantageously applied to room temperature detections of mid- and far-infrared radiations.
Structural chirality plays an important role in solid state physics and leads to a variety of novel physics. The feasibility of probing structural chirality of crystals using high harmonic generation in solids is explored in this work. Through first-principles calculations based on the time-dependent density functional theory framework, we demonstrate that evident circular dichroism (CD) effects can be induced in the high harmonic spectra from a chiral crystal -- bulk tellurium. The CD signal reverses for crystals with opposite structural chirality. Besides, the high harmonic spectroscopy also…
Among antiferromagnetic materials, Mn$_2$Au is one of the most intensively studied, and it serves as a very popular platform for testing various ideas related to antiferromagnetic magnetotransport and dynamics. Since recently, this material has also attracted considerable interest in the context of optical properties and optically-driven antiferromagnetic switching. In this work, we use first principles methods to explore the physics of charge photocurrents, spin photocurrents and inverse Faraday effect in antiferromagnetic Mn$_2$Au. We predict the symmetry and magnitude of these effects, and …
We examine the magneto-optical response of chiral multifold fermions. Specifically, we show that they are ideal candidates for observing the Helical Magnetic Effect (HME) previously predicted for simple Weyl fermions. Unlike Weyl fermions, the HME is present in multifold fermions even in the simplest case where the low-energy dispersion is linear and spherically symmetric. In this ideal case, we derive an analytical expression for the HME and find it is proportional to the circular photogalvanic effect; for realistic parameters and accounting for the geometry of the setup, the HME photocurrent…
Strong-field methods in solids enable new strategies for ultrafast nonlinear spectroscopy and provide all-optical insights into the electronic properties of condensed matter in reciprocal and real space. Additionally, solid-state media offers unprecedented possibilities to control high-harmonic generation using modified targets or tailored excitation fields. Here we merge these important points and demonstrate circularly-polarized high-harmonic generation with polarization-matched excitation fields for spectroscopy of chiral electronic properties at surfaces. The sensitivity of our approach is…
We have studied theoretically the Weyl semimetals the point symmetry group of which has reflection planes and which contain equivalent valleys with opposite chiralities. These include the most frequently studied compounds, namely the transition metals monopnictides TaAs, NbAs, TaP, NbP, and also Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$ alloys. The circular photogalvanic current, which inverts its direction under reversal of the light circular polarization, has been calculated for the light absorption under direct optical transitions near the Weyl points. In the studied materials, the total contribution of all the val…
Circular dichroism is a technologically important phenomenon contrasting the absorption and resultant emission properties between left- and right-handed circularly polarized light. While the chiral handedness of systems mainly determines the mechanism of the circular dichroism in linear optics, the counterpart in the nonlinear optical regime is nontrivial. Here, in contrast to traditional nonlinear circular dichroism responses from structured surfaces, we report on an unprecedented bulk-material-induced circular dichroism of second harmonic generation with a massive g-factor up to 1.8.

We study the Fermi surface contribution to the nonlinear DC photocurrent at quadratic order in a spatially uniform optical field in the ultra-clean limit. In addition to shift and injection current, we find that polarized light incident on a metallic system generates an intrinsic contribution to the bulk photovoltaic effect deriving from photoinduced electronic transitions on the Fermi surface. In {velocity} gauge, this contribution originates in both the coherent band off-diagonal and diagonal parts of the density matrix, describing respectively, the coherent wave function evolution and the c…

The second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) processes, such as the photogalvanic effect and second-order harmonic generation (SHG), play crucial roles in probing and controlling light-matter interactions for energy and device applications. To date, most studies of second-order NLO processes focus on materials with broken spatial inversion symmetry, such as proper ferroelectrics and noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetals. Nevertheless, inversion symmetry of Shubnikov groups can be broken via spin-ordering in centrosymmetric crystals. Unfortunately, these materials are less common, and their NLO respon…
