The discovery of superconductivity under high pressure in Ruddlesden-Popper phases of bulk nickelates has sparked great interest in stabilizing ambient pressure superconductivity in thin-film form using epitaxial strain. Recently, signs of superconductivity have been observed in compressively strained bilayer nickelate thin films with an onset temperature exceeding 40 K, albeit with broad and two-step-like transitions. Here, we report intrinsic superconductivity and normal-state transport properties in compressively strained La$_2$PrNi$_2$O$_7$ thin films, achieved through a combination of isovalent Pr substitution, growth optimization, and precision ozone annealing. The superconducting onset occurs above 48 K, with zero resistance reached above 30 K, and the critical current density at 1.4 K is 100-fold larger than previous reports. The normal-state resistivity exhibits quadratic temperature dependence indicative of Fermi liquid behaviour, and other phenomenological similarities to transport in overdoped cuprates suggest parallels in their emergent properties.
Strontium titanate is an incipient ferroelectric in which superconductivity emerges at exceptionally low doping levels. Remarkably, stabilizing the polar phase through strain or chemical substitution has been shown to significantly enhance the superconducting critical temperature, and the polar instability plays a pivotal role in the majority of proposed superconducting pairing mechanisms. A rigorous understanding of ferroelectricity is therefore essential to elucidate the electron pairing mechanism in this material. To investigate the nature of the polar order in strontium titanate, we develo…
SrTiO$_3$ is an incipient ferroelectric on the verge of a polar instability, which is avoided at low temperatures by quantum fluctuations. Within this unusual quantum paraelectric phase, superconductivity persists despite extremely dilute carrier densities. Ferroelectric fluctuations have been suspected to play a role in the origin of superconductivity by contributing to electron pairing. To investigate this possibility, we used optical second harmonic generation to measure the doping and temperature dependence of the ferroelectric order parameter in compressively strained SrTiO$_3$ thin films…
Strongly correlated materials often respond sensitively to the external perturbations. In the recently discovered superconducting infinite-layer nickelates, the superconducting transition temperature can be dramatically enhanced via only ~1% compressive strain-tuning enabled by substrate design. However, the root of such enhancement remains elusive. While the superconducting pairing mechanism is still not settled, magnetic Cooper pairing - similar to the cuprates has been proposed. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we investigate the magnetic excitations in infinite-layer PrNiO2 thin …

We performed high-field magnetotransport experiments up to 50 T on strained La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 films. Two films with different strain, one expansively strained with Tc ~ 26 K and the other compressively strained with Tc ~ 44 K, show a striking contrast in the normal-state transport: the former has a prominent low-temperature upturn while the latter has not. Identifying the low-temperature upturn as due to the Kondo effect, our experimental observations indicate that Cooper and Kondo singlet formations are competing in high- Tc cuprates: Kondo singlet formation hinders Cooper pair formation. Base…

We have grown untwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) films on (110) MgO substrates that were pre-annealed at high temperature in oxygen atmosphere. The annealing results in surface reconstruction with shallow facets, which induce the suppression of the YBCO twinning domains, and the preferential alignment of the CuO chains along one of the in-plane directions of the substrate. Because of the large mismatch between the in-plane lattice parameters of film and substrate, the strain induced by the MgO into the YBCO layer is strong and very peculiar. The YBCO film is compressed, with respect to th…
