We propose music tagging with classifier chains that model the interplay of music tags. Most conventional methods estimate multiple tags independently by treating them as multiple independent binary classification problems. This treatment overlooks the conditional dependencies among music tags, leading to suboptimal tagging performance. Unlike most music taggers, the proposed method sequentially estimates each tag based on the idea of the classifier chains. Beyond the naive classifier chains, the proposed method groups the multiple tags by category, such as genre, and performs chains by unit of groups, which we call \textit{classifier group chains}. Our method allows the modeling of the dependence between tag groups. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method for music tagging performance through music tagging experiments using the MTG-Jamendo dataset. Furthermore, we investigate the effective order of chains for music tagging.
Recently, we proposed a self-attention based music tagging model. Different from most of the conventional deep architectures in music information retrieval, which use stacked 3x3 filters by treating music spectrograms as images, the proposed self-attention based model attempted to regard music as a temporal sequence of individual audio events. Not only the performance, but it could also facilitate better interpretability. In this paper, we mainly focus on visualizing and understanding the proposed self-attention based music tagging model.

Music generation has always been a hot topic. When discussing symbolic music, melody or harmonies are usually seen as the only generating targets. But in fact, playing techniques are also quite an important part of the music. In this paper, we discuss the playing techniques generation problem by seeing it as a tagging problem. We propose a model that can use both the current data and external knowledge. Experiments were carried out by applying the proposed model in Chinese bamboo flute music, and results show that our method can make generated music more lively.
We present Music Tagging Transformer that is trained with a semi-supervised approach. The proposed model captures local acoustic characteristics in shallow convolutional layers, then temporally summarizes the sequence of the extracted features using stacked self-attention layers. Through a careful model assessment, we first show that the proposed architecture outperforms the previous state-of-the-art music tagging models that are based on convolutional neural networks under a supervised scheme. The Music Tagging Transformer is further improved by noisy student training, a semi-supervised appro…
Recent advances in deep learning accelerated the development of content-based automatic music tagging systems. Music information retrieval (MIR) researchers proposed various architecture designs, mainly based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), that achieve state-of-the-art results in this multi-label binary classification task. However, due to the differences in experimental setups followed by researchers, such as using different dataset splits and software versions for evaluation, it is difficult to compare the proposed architectures directly with each other. To facilitate further resea…

While end-to-end systems are becoming popular in auditory signal processing including automatic music tagging, models using raw audio as input needs a large amount of data and computational resources without domain knowledge. Inspired by the fact that temporal modulation is regarded as an essential component in auditory perception, we introduce the Temporal Modulation Neural Network (TMNN) that combines Mel-like data-driven front ends and temporal modulation filters with a simple ResNet back end. The structure includes a set of temporal modulation filters to capture long-term patterns in all f…
Self-attention is an attention mechanism that learns a representation by relating different positions in the sequence. The transformer, which is a sequence model solely based on self-attention, and its variants achieved state-of-the-art results in many natural language processing tasks. Since music composes its semantics based on the relations between components in sparse positions, adopting the self-attention mechanism to solve music information retrieval (MIR) problems can be beneficial. Hence, we propose a self-attention based deep sequence model for music tagging. The proposed architecture…
Convolutional neural networks (CNN) recently gained notable attraction in a variety of machine learning tasks: including music classification and style tagging. In this work, we propose implementing intermediate connections to the CNN architecture to facilitate the transfer of multi-scale/level knowledge between different layers. Our novel model for music tagging shows significant improvement in comparison to the proposed approaches in the literature, due to its ability to carry low-level timbral features to the last layer.

Convolutional Neural Networks have been extensively explored in the task of automatic music tagging. The problem can be approached by using either engineered time-frequency features or raw audio as input. Modulation filter bank representations that have been actively researched as a basis for timbre perception have the potential to facilitate the extraction of perceptually salient features. We explore end-to-end learned front-ends for audio representation learning, ModNet and SincModNet, that incorporate a temporal modulation processing block. The structure is effectively analogous to a modula…

The lack of data tends to limit the outcomes of deep learning research, particularly when dealing with end-to-end learning stacks processing raw data such as waveforms. In this study, 1.2M tracks annotated with musical labels are available to train our end-to-end models. This large amount of data allows us to unrestrictedly explore two different design paradigms for music auto-tagging: assumption-free models - using waveforms as input with very small convolutional filters; and models that rely on domain knowledge - log-mel spectrograms with a convolutional neural network designed to learn timb…

Audio-based music classification and tagging is typically based on categorical supervised learning with a fixed set of labels. This intrinsically cannot handle unseen labels such as newly added music genres or semantic words that users arbitrarily choose for music retrieval. Zero-shot learning can address this problem by leveraging an additional semantic space of labels where side information about the labels is used to unveil the relationship between each other. In this work, we investigate the zero-shot learning in the music domain and organize two different setups of side information. One i…
Automatic tagging of music is an important research topic in Music Information Retrieval and audio analysis algorithms proposed for this task have achieved improvements with advances in deep learning. In particular, many state-of-the-art systems use Convolutional Neural Networks and operate on mel-spectrogram representations of the audio. In this paper, we compare commonly used mel-spectrogram representations and evaluate model performances that can be achieved by reducing the input size in terms of both lesser amount of frequency bands and larger frame rates. We use the MagnaTagaTune dataset …

We analyse and (re-)validate a large music tagging dataset to investigate the reliability of training and evaluation. Using a trained network, we compute label vector similarities which is compared to groundtruth similarity. The results highlight…
We present Mirable's submission to the 2021 Emotions and Themes in Music challenge. In this work, we intend to address the question: can we leverage semi-supervised learning techniques on music emotion recognition? With that, we experiment with noisy student training, which has improved model performance in the image classification domain. As the noisy student method requires a strong teacher model, we further delve into the factors including (i) input training length and (ii) complementary music representations to further boost the performance of the teacher model. For (i), we find that model…

In this paper, we empirically investigate the effect of audio preprocessing on music tagging with deep neural networks. We perform comprehensive experiments involving audio preprocessing using different time-frequency representations, logarithmic magnitude compression, frequency weighting, and scaling. We show that many commonly used input preprocessing techniques are redundant except magnitude compression.
Recent work has shown that the end-to-end approach using convolutional neural network (CNN) is effective in various types of machine learning tasks. For audio signals, the approach takes raw waveforms as input using an 1-D convolution layer. In this paper, we improve the 1-D CNN architecture for music auto-tagging by adopting building blocks from state-of-the-art image classification models, ResNets and SENets, and adding multi-level feature aggregation to it. We compare different combinations of the modules in building CNN architectures. The results show that they achieve significant improvem…
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been successfully used in various Music Information Retrieval (MIR) tasks, both as end-to-end models and as feature extractors for more complex systems. However, the MIR field is still dominated by the classical VGG-based CNN architecture variants, often in combination with more complex modules such as attention, and/or techniques such as pre-training on large datasets. Deeper models such as ResNet -- which surpassed VGG by a large margin in other domains -- are rarely used in MIR. One of the main reasons for this, as we will show, is the lack of gener…
One of the main limitations in the field of audio signal processing is the lack of large public datasets with audio representations and high-quality annotations due to restrictions of copyrighted commercial music. We present Melon Playlist Dataset, a public dataset of mel-spectrograms for 649,091tracks and 148,826 associated playlists annotated by 30,652 different tags. All the data is gathered from Melon, a popular Korean streaming service. The dataset is suitable for music information retrieval tasks, in particular, auto-tagging and automatic playlist continuation. Even though the latter can…

Music auto-tagging is often handled in a similar manner to image classification by regarding the 2D audio spectrogram as image data. However, music auto-tagging is distinguished from image classification in that the tags are highly diverse and have different levels of abstractions. Considering this issue, we propose a convolutional neural networks (CNN)-based architecture that embraces multi-level and multi-scaled features. The architecture is trained in three steps. First, we conduct supervised feature learning to capture local audio features using a set of CNNs with different input sizes. Se…

Recently, the end-to-end approach that learns hierarchical representations from raw data using deep convolutional neural networks has been successfully explored in the image, text and speech domains. This approach was applied to musical signals as well but has been not fully explored yet. To this end, we propose sample-level deep convolutional neural networks which learn representations from very small grains of waveforms (e.g. 2 or 3 samples) beyond typical frame-level input representations. Our experiments show how deep architectures with sample-level filters improve the accuracy in music au…

Music tagging and content-based retrieval systems have traditionally been constructed using pre-defined ontologies covering a rigid set of music attributes or text queries. This paper presents MuLan: a first attempt at a new generation of acoustic models that link music audio directly to unconstrained natural language music descriptions. MuLan takes the form of a two-tower, joint audio-text embedding model trained using 44 million music recordings (370K hours) and weakly-associated, free-form text annotations. Through its compatibility with a wide range of music genres and text styles (includi…
We present CP-JKU submission to MediaEval 2019; a Receptive Field-(RF)-regularized and Frequency-Aware CNN approach for tagging music with emotion/mood labels. We perform an investigation regarding the impact of the RF of the CNNs on their performance on this dataset. We observe that ResNets with smaller receptive fields -- originally adapted for acoustic scene classification -- also perform well in the emotion tagging task. We improve the performance of such architectures using techniques such as Frequency Awareness and Shake-Shake regularization, which were used in previous work on general a…

Current approaches for explaining deep learning systems applied to musical data provide results in a low-level feature space, e.g., by highlighting potentially relevant time-frequency bins in a spectrogram or time-pitch bins in a piano roll. This can be difficult to understand, particularly for musicologists without technical knowledge. To address this issue, we focus on more human-friendly explanations based on high-level musical concepts. Our research targets trained systems (post-hoc explanations) and explores two approaches: a supervised one, where the user can define a musical concept and…

We introduce a convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN) for music tagging. CRNNs take advantage of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for local feature extraction and recurrent neural networks for temporal summarisation of the extracted features. We compare CRNN with three CNN structures that have been used for music tagging while controlling the number of parameters with respect to their performance and training time per sample. Overall, we found that CRNNs show a strong performance with respect to the number of parameter and training time, indicating the effectiveness of its hybrid st…

Deep representation learning offers a powerful paradigm for mapping input data onto an organized embedding space and is useful for many music information retrieval tasks. Two central methods for representation learning include deep metric learning and classification, both having the same goal of learning a representation that can generalize well across tasks. Along with generalization, the emerging concept of disentangled representations is also of great interest, where multiple semantic concepts (e.g., genre, mood, instrumentation) are learned jointly but remain separable in the learned repre…

Music genre classification is one of the trending topics in regards to the current Music Information Retrieval (MIR) Research. Since, the dependency of genre is not only limited to the audio profile, we also make use of textual content provided as lyrics of the corresponding song. We implemented a CNN based feature extractor for spectrograms in order to incorporate the acoustic features and a Hierarchical Attention Network based feature extractor for lyrics. We then go on to classify the music track based upon the resulting fused feature vector.
In this paper, we proposed a robust music genre classification method based on a sparse FFT based feature extraction method which extracted with discriminating power of spectral analysis of non-stationary audio signals, and the capability of sparse representation based classifiers. Feature extraction method combines two sets of features namely short-term features (extracted from windowed signals) and long-term features (extracted from combination of extracted short-time features). Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed feature extraction method leads to a sparse representation of a…
Categorizing music files according to their genre is a challenging task in the area of music information retrieval (MIR). In this study, we compare the performance of two classes of models. The first is a deep learning approach wherein a CNN model is trained end-to-end, to predict the genre label of an audio signal, solely using its spectrogram. The second approach utilizes hand-crafted features, both from the time domain and the frequency domain. We train four traditional machine learning classifiers with these features and compare their performance. The features that contribute the most towa…
Music information is often conveyed or recorded across multiple data modalities including but not limited to audio, images, text and scores. However, music information retrieval research has almost exclusively focused on single modality recognition, requiring development of separate models for each modality. Some multi-modal works require multiple coexisting modalities given to the model as inputs, constraining the use of these models to the few cases where data from all modalities are available. To the best of our knowledge, no existing model has the ability to take inputs from varying modali…

Attempts to use generative models for music generation have been common in recent years, and some of them have achieved good results. Pieces generated by some of these models are almost indistinguishable from those being composed by human composers. However, the research on the evaluation system for machine-generated music is still at a relatively early stage, and there is no uniform standard for such tasks. This paper proposes a stacked-LSTM binary classifier based on a language model, which can be used to distinguish the human composer's work from the machine-generated melody by learning the…

Multi-label audio tagging consists of assigning sets of tags to audio recordings. At inference time, thresholds are applied on the confidence scores outputted by a probabilistic classifier, in order to decide which classes are detected active. In this work, we consider having at disposal a trained classifier and we seek to automatically optimize the decision thresholds according to a performance metric of interest, in our case F-measure (micro-F1). We propose a new method, called SGL-Thresh for Surrogate Gradient Learning of Thresholds, that makes use of gradient descent. Since F1 is not diffe…
Music genre classification is a widely researched topic in music information retrieval (MIR).
