This paper presents a novel approach for the automatic generation of Cued Speech (ACSG), a visual communication system used by people with hearing impairment to better elicit the spoken language. We explore transfer learning strategies by leveraging a pre-trained audiovisual autoregressive text-to-speech model (AVTacotron2). This model is reprogrammed to infer Cued Speech (CS) hand and lip movements from text input. Experiments are conducted on two publicly available datasets, including one recorded specifically for this study. Performance is assessed using an automatic CS recognition system. With a decoding accuracy at the phonetic level reaching approximately 77%, the results demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach.
In this paper, we describe our approach for the Podcast Summarisation challenge in TREC 2020. Given a podcast episode with its transcription, the goal is to generate a summary that captures the most important information in the content. Our approach consists of two steps: (1) Filtering redundant or less informative sentences in the transcription using the attention of a hierarchical model; (2) Applying a state-of-the-art text summarisation system (BART) fine-tuned on the Podcast data using a sequence-level reward function. Furthermore, we perform ensembles of three and nine models for our subm…
This paper proposes a simple and effective approach for automatic recognition of Cued Speech (CS), a visual communication tool that helps people with hearing impairment to understand spoken language with the help of hand gestures that can uniquely identify the uttered phonemes in complement to lipreading. The proposed approach is based on a pre-trained hand and lips tracker used for visual feature extraction and a phonetic decoder based on a multistream recurrent neural network trained with connectionist temporal classification loss and combined with a pronunciation lexicon. The proposed syste…

Automatic Cued Speech Recognition (ACSR) provides an intelligent human-machine interface for visual communications, where the Cued Speech (CS) system utilizes lip movements and hand gestures to code spoken language for hearing-impaired people. Previous ACSR approaches often utilize direct feature concatenation as the main fusion paradigm. However, the asynchronous modalities i.e., lip, hand shape and hand position) in CS may cause interference for feature concatenation. To address this challenge, we propose a transformer based cross-modal mutual learning framework to prompt multi-modal interac…
We present an introspection of an audiovisual speech enhancement model. In particular, we focus on interpreting how a neural audiovisual speech enhancement model uses visual cues to improve the quality of the target speech signal. We show that visual cues provide not only high-level information about speech activity, i.e., speech/silence, but also fine-grained visual information about the place of articulation. One byproduct of this finding is that the learned visual embeddings can be used as features for other visual speech applications. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the learned visual …
Audiovisual speech synthesis is the problem of synthesizing a talking face while maximizing the coherency of the acoustic and visual speech. In this paper, we propose and compare two audiovisual speech synthesis systems for 3D face models. The first system is the AVTacotron2, which is an end-to-end text-to-audiovisual speech synthesizer based on the Tacotron2 architecture. AVTacotron2 converts a sequence of phonemes representing the sentence to synthesize into a sequence of acoustic features and the corresponding controllers of a face model. The output acoustic features are used to condition a…

The intuitive interaction between the audio and visual modalities is valuable for cross-modal self-supervised learning. This concept has been demonstrated for generic audiovisual tasks like video action recognition and acoustic scene classification. However, self-supervision remains under-explored for audiovisual speech. We propose a method to learn self-supervised speech representations from the raw audio waveform. We train a raw audio encoder by combining audio-only self-supervision (by predicting informative audio attributes) with visual self-supervision (by generating talking faces from au…

Subtitling is becoming increasingly important for disseminating information, given the enormous amounts of audiovisual content becoming available daily. Although Neural Machine Translation (NMT) can speed up the process of translating audiovisual content, large manual effort is still required for transcribing the source language, and for spotting and segmenting the text into proper subtitles. Creating proper subtitles in terms of timing and segmentation highly depends on information present in the audio (utterance duration, natural pauses). In this work, we explore two methods for applying Spe…
In this paper we explore audiovisual emotion recognition under noisy acoustic conditions with a focus on speech features. We attempt to answer the following research questions: (i) How does speech emotion recognition perform on noisy data? and (ii) To what extend does a multimodal approach improve the accuracy and compensate for potential performance degradation at different noise levels? We present an analytical investigation on two emotion datasets with superimposed noise at different signal-to-noise ratios, comparing three types of acoustic features. Visual features are incorporated with a …

We aim at improving spoken language modeling (LM) using very large amount of automatically transcribed speech. We leverage the INA (French National Audiovisual Institute) collection and obtain 19GB of text after applying ASR on 350,000 hours of diverse TV shows. From this, spoken language models are trained either by fine-tuning an existing LM (FlauBERT) or through training a LM from scratch. New models (FlauBERT-Oral) are shared with the community and evaluated for 3 downstream tasks: spoken language understanding, classification of TV shows and speech syntactic parsing. Results show that Fla…
We introduce the task of isochrony-aware machine translation which aims at generating translations suitable for dubbing. Dubbing of a spoken sentence requires transferring the content as well as the speech-pause structure of the source into the target language to achieve audiovisual coherence. Practically, this implies correctly projecting pauses from the source to the target and ensuring that target speech segments have roughly the same duration of the corresponding source speech segments. In this work, we propose implicit and explicit modeling approaches to integrate isochrony information in…

Estimating the positions of multiple speakers can be helpful for tasks like automatic speech recognition or speaker diarization. Both applications benefit from a known speaker position when, for instance, applying beamforming or assigning unique speaker identities. Recently, several approaches utilizing acoustic signals augmented with visual data have been proposed for this task. However, both the acoustic and the visual modality may be corrupted in specific spatial regions, for instance due to poor lighting conditions or to the presence of background noise. This paper proposes a novel audiovi…

Ultrasound tongue imaging is used to visualise the intra-oral articulators during speech production. It is utilised in a range of applications, including speech and language therapy and phonetics research. Ultrasound and speech audio are recorded simultaneously, and in order to correctly use this data, the two modalities should be correctly synchronised. Synchronisation is achieved using specialised hardware at recording time, but this approach can fail in practice resulting in data of limited usability. In this paper, we address the problem of automatically synchronising ultrasound and audio …
The goal of automatic dubbing is to perform speech-to-speech translation while achieving audiovisual coherence. This entails isochrony, i.e., translating the original speech by also matching its prosodic structure into phrases and pauses, especially when the speaker's mouth is visible. In previous work, we introduced a prosodic alignment model to address isochrone or on-screen dubbing. In this work, we extend the prosodic alignment model to also address off-screen dubbing that requires less stringent synchronization constraints. We conduct experiments on four dubbing directions - English to Fr…
