The Galactic bulge hosts the Milky Way's oldest stars, possibly coming from disrupted globular clusters (GCs) or the bulge's primordial building blocks, making these stars witnesses to the Galaxy's early chemical enrichment. The Galactic bar currently dominates the bulge's region, altering the orbits of objects formed before its formation and complicating the trace of the field stars' original clusters. Here, we present the discovery of a fossil record of this evolution, SOS1 -- a star trapped in the bar, exhibiting significant enhancements in nitrogen, sodium, and aluminum, typical of second-generation GC stars. SOS1 also shows an s-process Ce enhancement, suggesting an old age and early enrichment by fast-rotating massive stars in the Galaxy's earliest phases. With the purpose of finding the SOS1's parent GC, we derive its precise chemodynamical properties by combining high-precision proper motions from Gaia with APOGEE detailed chemical abundances. Our analysis suggests that SOS1 was possibly stripped from the GC Terzan 5 by the Galactic bar's gravitational influence approximately 350 Myr ago. We also found chemical similarities suggesting that SOS1 belonged to the most metal-poor, ancient, and peripheral stellar population of Terzan 5. These results not only support the hypothesis that Terzan 5 is a remnant of a primordial building block of the Galactic bulge, but also suggest this cluster continues losing stars to the bar. Our method highlights how powerful the use of chemodynamical properties in the Gaia era is for tracing the Galaxy's evolutionary history.
During pilot observations of the Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Galaxy Evolution (VESTIGE), a blind narrow-band Halpha+[NII] imaging survey of the Virgo cluster carried out with MegaCam at the CFHT, we have observed the spiral galaxy NGC 4254 (M99). Deep Halpha+[NII] narrow-band and GALEX UV images revealed the presence of 60 compact (70-500 pc radius) star forming regions up to ~ 20 kpc outside the optical disc of the galaxy. These regions are located along a tail of HI gas stripped from the disc of the galaxy after a rapid gravitational encounter with another Virgo cluster member that si…
The Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission (VESTIGE) is a blind narrow-band H$α$+[NII] imaging survey carried out with MegaCam at the CFHT. During pilot observations we have observed NGC 4330, an intermediate mass, edge-on star forming spiral currently falling into the core of the Virgo cluster. New deep observations revealed a low surface brightness 10 kpc tail exhibiting a peculiar filamentary structure. The filaments are remarkably parallel one another and clearly indicate the direction of motion of the galaxy in the Virgo potential. Motivated by the detection of these feat…
Using the VESTIGE survey, a deep narrow-band H$α$ imaging survey of the Virgo cluster carried on at the CFHT with MegaCam, we discovered a long diffuse tail of ionised gas in the edge-on late-type galaxy NGC 4330. This peculiar feature witnesses an ongoing ram pressure stripping (RPS) event able to remove the gas in the outer disc region. Tuned hydrodynamic simulations suggest that the RPS event is occurring almost face-on, making NGC 4330 the ideal candidate to study the effects of the perturbation in the direction perpendicular to the disc plane. We present here two new independent sets of F…

We measure FIR emission from tails of stripped dust following the ionised and atomic gas components in galaxies undergoing ram pressure stripping. We study the dust-to-gas relative distribution and mass ratio in the stripped interstellar medium and relate them to those of the intra-cluster medium, thus linking the cluster-ICM-galaxy evolution at small-scales. The galaxy sample consists of three Scd Virgo galaxies with stellar masses in the range $10^9\lesssim \mathrm{M_{*}} \lesssim 10^{10}\, \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, and within 1 Mpc from the cluster centre, namely NGC 4330, NGC 4522, and NGC 4654…
The recent discovery of super-massive black holes (SMBHs) in the centers of high-mass ultra compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) suggests that at least some UCDs are the stripped nuclear star clusters of lower mass galaxies. Tracing these former nuclei of stripped galaxies provides a unique way to track the assembly history of a galaxy or galaxy cluster. In this paper we present a new method to estimate how many UCDs host an SMBH in their center and thus are stripped galaxy nuclei. We revisit the dynamical mass measurements that suggest many UCDs have more mass than expected from stellar population e…
We exploit the first data release from the Gaia mission to identify candidate Mira variables in the outskirts of the Magellanic Clouds. The repeated observations of sources during the initial phase of the Gaia mission is used to identify stars that show signs of variability. This variability information, combined with infrared photometry from 2MASS and WISE, allows us to select a clean sample of giants in the periphery of the LMC. We find evidence for Miras surrounding the LMC out to ~20 deg in all directions, apart from the North-West quadrant. Our sample does not generally follow the gas dis…
The Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission (VESTIGE) is a blind narrow-band Halpha+[NII] imaging survey of the Virgo cluster carried out with MegaCam at the Canada-French-Hawaii telescope (CFHT). We use a new set of data extracted from VESTIGE to study the impact of the hostile cluster environment on the star formation process down to the scale of HII regions (~ 50 pc). HII regions are identified and their parameters measured using the HIIphot code on a sample of 114 late-type galaxies spanning a wide range in morphological type (Sa-Sd, Im, BCD), stellar mass (10^6.5 <= M_star…
Numerical models of the tidal disruption of the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf galaxy have recently been developed that for the first time simultaneously satisfy most observational constraints on the angular position, distance, and radial velocity trends of both leading and trailing tidal streams emanating from the dwarf. We use these dynamical models in combination with extant 3-D position and velocity data for Galactic globular clusters and dSph galaxies to identify those Milky Way satellites that are likely to have originally formed in Sgr and been stripped from it during its extended interaction …
We show that there is a new class of gas tails - slingshot tails - which form as a subhalo (i.e. a subcluster or early-type cluster galaxy) moves away from the cluster center towards the apocenter of its orbit. These tails can point perpendicular or even opposite to the subhalo direction of motion, not tracing the recent orbital path. Thus, the observed tail direction can be misleading, and we caution against naive conclusions regarding the subhalo's direction of motion based on the tail direction. A head-tail morphology of a galaxy's or subcluster's gaseous atmosphere is usually attributed to…

We introduce a new methodology for the direct extraction of galaxy physical parameters from multi-wavelength photometry and spectroscopy. We use semi-analytic models that describe galaxy evolution in the context of large scale cosmological simulation to provide a catalog of galaxies, star formation histories, and physical parameters. We then apply stellar population synthesis models and a simple extinction model to calculate the observable broad-band fluxes and spectral indices for these galaxies. We use a linear regression analysis to relate physical parameters to observed colors and spectral…

NGC 4330 is one of the Virgo galaxies whose UV distribution shows a tail structure. An associated tail structure is also observed in the HI and H$α$ emission distributions. Previous dynamical modeling showed that the galaxy is approaching the cluster center and is therefore undergoing increasing ram pressure stripping. Recent stellar population fitting of deep optical spectra together with multiband photometry lead to the determination of the time when star formation was quenched in the galactic disk. We introduce a new version of the dynamical model that includes the diffuse ionized gas and a…
The diffuse extended outer regions of galaxies are hard to study because they are faint, with typical surface brightness of 1% of the dark night sky. We can tackle this problem by using resolved star tracers which remain visible at large distances from the galaxy centres. This article describes the use of Planetary Nebulae as tracers and the calibration of their properties as indicators of the star formation history, mean age and metallicity of the parent stars in the Milky Way and Local Group galaxies . We then report on the results from a deep, extended, planetary nebulae survey in a 0.5 sqd…
Intrinsic iron abundance spreads in globular clusters, although usually small, are very common, and are signatures of self enrichment: some stars within the cluster have been enriched by supernova ejecta from other stars within the same cluster. We use the Bailin (2018) self enrichment model to predict the relationship between properties of the protocluster -- its mass and the metallicity of the protocluster gas cloud -- and the final observable properties today -- its current metallicity and the internal iron abundance spread. We apply this model to an updated catalog of Milky Way globular cl…
The evolution of galaxies depends on their interaction with the surrounding environment. Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) have been found in large numbers in clusters. We detected a few star-forming blobs in the VESTIGE survey, located at $\sim$5 kpc from a UDG, namely NGVS 3543, in association with an HI gas cloud AGC 226178, suggesting a recent interaction between this low-surface-brightness system and the surrounding cluster environment. We use a complete set of multi-frequency data including deep optical, UV, and narrow-band H$α$ imaging and HI data to understand the formation process that ga…
A Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission (VESTIGE). XIX. The discovery of a spectacular 230 kpc Halpha tail following NGC 4569 in the Virgo cluster
Using a compilation of Halpha fluxes for 384 star forming galaxies detected during the VESTIGE survey, we study several important scaling relations for a complete sample of galaxies in a rich environment. The extraordinary sensitivity of the data allows us to sample the whole dynamic range of the Halpha luminosity function, from massive (M*~10^11 Mo) to dwarf systems (M*~10^6 Mo). This extends previous works to a dynamic range in stellar mass and star formation rate (10^-4<SFR<10 Mo yr^-1) never explored so far. The main sequence (MS) relation derived for all star forming galaxies within one v…
The Virgo Environmental Survey Tracing Ionised Gas Emission (VESTIGE) is a blind narrow-band Halpha+[NII] imaging survey carried out with MegaCam at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. The survey covers the whole Virgo cluster region from its core to one virial radius (104 deg^2). The sensitivity of the survey is of f(Halpha) ~ 4 x 10^-17 erg sec-1 cm^-2 (5 sigma detection limit) for point sources and Sigma (Halpha) ~ 2 x 10^-18 erg sec^-1 cm^-2 arcsec^-2 (1 sigma detection limit at 3 arcsec resolution) for extended sources, making VESTIGE the deepest and largest blind narrow-band survey of a …
We present an ultraviolet quasar absorption line analysis of metal lines associated with three strong intervening H I absorbers (with $N$(H I) $>$ 10$^{16.5}$ cm$^{-2}$) detected in the outskirts of Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect-selected galaxy clusters ($z_{\rm cl} \sim 0.4 - 0.5$), within clustocentric impact parameters of $ρ_{cl}$ $\sim$ $(1.6 - 4.7)r_{500}$. Discovered in a recent set of targeted far-UV $HST$/COS spectroscopic observations, these absorbers have the highest H I column densities ever observed in the outskirts of galaxy clusters, and are also rich in metal absorption lines. …
